Character.AI Waiting Room? 180 Reviews Explain It (2026)

You open Character.AI and, instead of your chats, you get a screen saying the servers are under high load. There is an estimated wait, usually a few minutes, and a button to skip the line with c.ai+. You wait. The number goes up.

On 28 October 2026 that screen produced the biggest single day of complaints in our Character.AI sample. We read every Google Play review about it in eight languages to find out what the waiting room does, who gets stuck in it and what helps.

Quick Answer: Why Is Character.AI Making Me Wait?

180 Google Play reviews from 28 to 30 October 2026 say Character.AI put them in a waiting room or told them the servers were under high load before they could open a chat, 174 of them on 28 October alone and 139 with one star. Free users are offered a way to skip the line by paying for c.ai+. 23 reviewers say the estimated wait went up or started over instead of counting down, and 4 say they already pay for a subscription and were queued anyway. Character.AI replied to 16 of them with the same message: the issue has been resolved and things are back to normal.

How We Counted

We pulled the 10,000 most recent US English-language Google Play reviews of Character.AI, going back to 24 August 2026, plus the 3,000 most recent from each of the Spanish, Brazilian, Indonesian, German, French, Saudi and Turkish stores, 31,002 different reviews in all. The UK store returned almost exactly the same reviews as the US one. Character.AI holds 2.25 stars from 2,455,001 ratings on Google Play and 4.27 from 560,789 on the App Store. Every review below is from the Android app.

We searched them for waiting room, waiting line, queue, high load, servers full and the local words for queue, waiting list and waiting time, then read every match from 28 October onward and every other review from those days that mentions waiting or the servers. We kept only reviews about being made to wait before getting into the app. Reviews about the daily message limit, the voice timer or slow replies inside a chat are about something else, and we left them out. So are 19 reviews that only say the servers were down, without mentioning a wait.

87 of the 180 came from the US store, 41 from Spain, 17 from Brazil, 10 each from Indonesia and Turkey, 8 from France, 4 from Germany and 3 from Saudi Arabia. Where a version is given, 115 were on 1.17.4.

For scale: the US store got a median of 103 reviews of one to three stars a day from 1 September to 27 October. On 28 October it got 642.

What the Screen Says

Reviewers describe two messages, sometimes on the same day. One says Character.AI is "currently experiencing issues due to high load" and is "working to fully restore service as soon as possible". The other is the waiting room itself: an estimated wait, and an offer to skip it with c.ai+.

it was alright for awhile, but I just tried to open it and its telling me their service are under a heavy load and its an estimated 10 minute wait before I'm let into the app unless I pay for cai+?? then instead of going from 10 to 9 minutes, it went from 10 to 11 minutes.

The Timer Goes Up

The most specific complaint is about the estimate. 23 reviewers say it went up, jumped around or went back to the start instead of counting down, and 14 more say they waited hours on an estimate of a few minutes.

what the hell is with this app! it's been showing the server has huge workload you have to wait for 9 minutes. I have been waiting for 45 minutes and yet it is showing 14 minutes, 9 minutes, and again 14 minutes.

The app used to be enjoyable, but the constant waiting times have made it frustrating. The estimated wait kept increasing from 7 to 10 minutes, while paid users can skip the queue.

i have been using this app for years now and it used to be the best app ever .. today i tried to use it , and they put me on a wait list . I was pissed but I thought oh well whatever . I was told to wait 2 minutes . I waited for 10 minutes. and then the number change from 2 minutes ln the waiting list to 8.

One reviewer kept a running log through the day: no access from 10 am to 5 pm, an update notice around 7 pm, the waiting room from 8 pm, still in it close to midnight.

now ,on 28 October, from 10 am to 5pm i cant use the app ,I was busy half the time ,anyway the ads are a lot and unbearable and annoying, most on the time I dont use the app from the ads ,what is a chating app sponsoring ,and around 7pm they showed that it was under an update ,around 8 pm I was in a waiting room and now it is. 10:46pm ,so I been waiting for hours in a waiting room for 7 to 11 minutes waiting room according to the app,and now is 11:46 pm in real time ,I keep updating the feedback

Leaving the Screen Can Start It Over

Several reviewers say the countdown restarted when they left the app or came back to it later, so switching to another app while you wait can cost you your place.

everytime I try to enter the app it says servers are currently under higher load and everytime I have to wait for like 10 minutes minimum like if I wanted to use the app for few minutes bc I'm free at x time I can't use it bc of the server overload that's annoying and if I left the app while leaving it open and enter it again after a while the wait screen time restart

You have to pay or wait to load into the app. And leaving a review literally just doubled the wait time.

Reinstalling did not help the reviewers who tried it, and reopening the app did not either.

the app just doesn't work even if you wait out the waiting line. reopening the app also doesn't work.

The website is not a way around it. A Spanish reviewer found a "virtual queue" there as well, and another says neither the app nor the site would load.

Paying Didn't Always Skip It

The waiting room is sold as something c.ai+ lets you skip, but four reviewers say they already pay for a subscription and were put in it anyway.

what is going on with c.ai? it's not letting me skip the waiting line even though i have the premium.

For reviewers who don't pay, the complaint is less about the outage than about the offer. 76 mention c.ai+, a subscription or paying to skip, and many put the waiting room on a list with the ads, the slow mode and the swipe and message limits.

It Wasn't the First Time

The waiting room is not new. In the same sample, smaller groups of reviews complain about it on 20 September, 3 October and 17 October, six or seven reviews each, and German reviewers mention it as early as April.

Bro why do I need to wait in line? it took HOURS.

I've been using this for years...i just updated it yesterday and now i have to wait in line because i didn't upgrade to c.ai+?

Before 28 October the US sample had 13 reviews about the queue in two months. What changed on 28 October is how many people hit it at once.

What Character.AI Says

Character.AI replied to 16 of the 180, all with the same text: sorry for the trouble, the issue has been resolved and things are back to normal, and to contact support.character.ai for other issues. The replies do not say what caused the high load, how long the waiting room lasts or why free users are queued and subscribers are not.

Only 6 of the 180 reviews are dated after 28 October, and none of them says the waiting room is gone for good.

What You Can Try

Stay on the waiting screen. Reviewers who left the app or reopened it say the countdown started over. If you are going to wait, leave the app open on that screen.

Don't reinstall. The reviewers who reinstalled the app or restarted their phone were back in the same queue.

Don't buy c.ai+ just to get past one outage. Four paying reviewers were queued anyway, and Character.AI's own replies call the 28 October problem an issue that was resolved, not a permanent feature. If you are thinking about paying, decide on what c.ai+ gives you on a normal day.

Check support.character.ai before you write a review. It is the address Character.AI gives in every reply. A review, as one reviewer found out, does not get you through the queue.
