Disney+ Downloads Not Working Offline? 307 Reviews (2026)
Disney+ downloads ask for internet exactly when you have none. We read 307 US reviews plus 640 in 13 other languages to find when it broke.
You downloaded three episodes before the flight. You tested them. At 30,000 feet the app says it needs an internet connection.
That is not a misconfiguration on your phone, and it is not storage. It is the single most reported functional failure in Disney+ reviews right now, and the reviews written in German pin down the mechanism more precisely than the English ones do: the app appears to require a recent successful login, so downloads stop playing once you have been offline too long.
This article shows how many people report it, what triggers it, and what to do before you fly.
How We Counted
On 7 August 2026 we pulled the 500 newest US Google Play reviews and the newest US App Store reviews for Disney+, then ran the same query across thirteen more language storefronts.
On Google Play, 404 of the 500 US reviews were rated 1-3 stars and 263 were long enough to categorise, spanning 27 July to 7 August 2026: 194 one star, 47 two star, 22 three star. The App Store returned 44 categorised negatives. That is 307 categorised US complaints. The international sweep returned 640 more after removing duplicates, across Spanish, Portuguese, French, German, Italian, Dutch, Japanese, Korean, Arabic, Turkish, Polish, Indonesian and Thai.
| Google Play | App Store | |
|---|---|---|
| Rating | 4.32 | 4.59 |
| Ratings | 5,113,875 | 1,974,558 |
| Installs | 500,000,000+ | not published |
| Version scanned | 26.13.0 | 5.14.0 |
We ran the multi-language sweep because Disney+ sells in every one of those markets. It changed the finding, and we will show where.
The Largest Functional Cluster: Downloads That Need the Internet
40 of the 263 US Play reviews, 15.2%, are about downloads or offline playback. Within that group, 15 say explicitly that the app demanded a connection to play already-downloaded content, 9 say the app signed them out while offline, and 13 describe it happening during travel: flights, commutes, a hospital stay.
The clearest account in the whole set comes from someone who did everything right:
Offline downloads are completely unreliable. I downloaded and tested everything before a 12-hour flight, watched for two hours, then the app suddenly demanded an internet connection after I briefly switched to the camera. The same thing has happened after timezone changes on previous trips.
Note the trigger: leaving the app for a moment. Another reviewer describes the same thing as a state the app drops into and will not come out of:
I cannot watch any downloads as the Disney app on my phone and my tablet will not let me access downloads when I am offline. Thus defeating the purpose of downloading. When on wifi I can download, then offline I get a black 'you are offline' screen with no access to any of the Disney app, which is frustrating.
And one reviewer identifies it as a regression, which matters because it dates the problem:
I shouldn't have updated the app :/ why do i now need Internet to watch my downloads.... That are meant for offline watching? It LITERALLY defeats the point. I can't get reliable Internet in the hospital, that's why I have the downloads :/
The failure is not limited to playback starting. Two reviewers describe pre-flight preparation that still failed:
Downloaded several times for flights and even with pre-login with WiFi before takeoff, it never works! And every time I land, I have to re-login.
App is glitchy. Downloaded episodes of a show to watch on a flight only for the app to say "something went wrong" and won't play any of the downloaded episodes.
The German Reviews Name the Mechanism
This is where the multi-language sweep earned its keep. The US reviews describe the symptom. The German-language reviews, which produced 16 of the 52 international offline complaints, describe a rule.
One reviewer states it as a condition:
Germanoffline Downloads gucken geht nur noch wenn man sich vorher mindestens einmal am Tag in die app eingeloggt hat, dann muß man meistens auch noch die zugangsdaten neu eingeben. Das war vorher nicht.
Another puts a much shorter window on it, and dates it to an update:
GermanNach einem Update kann ich mir meine Downloads nicht mehr ohne vorherige Internetverbindung anschauen, selbst nach nur 15min Pause.
A third quotes the exact error string, which is a network error rather than a licensing message:
GermanWas bringt mir die Möglichkeit, Filme zum offline ansehen herunterzuladen, wenn dann die App nicht öffnet mit der Meldung "Netzwerkfehler - überprüfen Sie Ihre Internetverbindung"?
And a fourth connects it to the sign-out frequency, which is the piece that makes the whole thing fail:
GermanOffline Mode nicht möglich, da man sich ständig neu einloggen muss... schwierig wenn man offline ist! Login bei mir teilweise 3x täglich erforderlich. Ging früher problemlos.
Put those together and the shape is clear. The app wants to revalidate the session, revalidation needs a network, and being offline is precisely when you cannot supply one. Reviewers who are signed out three times a day hit it constantly. Reviewers who stay signed in do not notice.
We are describing what four independent reviewers report, not Disney's implementation, which is not published. But it is consistent across languages and it explains why "it worked last month" and "it works on wifi" are both true.
The Same Report in Five More Languages
52 of the 640 deduplicated international reviews, 8.1%, describe offline playback failing, concentrated in German (16), Polish (15) and French (8).
The French reviewers describe being locked out of the app entirely rather than just the downloads:
The Polish reviewers supply the two most concrete data points in the set. One states the login requirement outright:
PolishNa dodatek tego wszystkiego to zdarza się że mimo że filmy pobrane to nie obejrzysz offline, ponieważ Disney wymaga by się i tak zalogować.
The other reports it failing on the exact occasion the feature exists for, twice, while every other app worked:
Polishtryb offline nie dziala kiedy trzeba - 2 razy był potrzebny dla dzieci gdy lecieliśmy samolotem i 2 razy nie działał. Pozostałe aplikacje działały bez problemu.
Portuguese and Spanish reviewers report the same thing in one line each:
Portugueseaplicativo não abre se não estiver conectado mesmo se tiver conteúdo baixado pra ver OFFLINE
SpanishEs una porqueria esta aplicación, no solo me pide la contraseña a cada rato para iniciar sesión, es lenta en descargar y para colmo las descargas para ver cuando no hay red piden conexión a red para verlas.
The App Store side is smaller but adds a variant where the downloads expire rather than refuse:
useless offline. every time i download movies to watch on a plane they are unavailable a day later, and then can’t re-download them when in a foreign country.
Step 1: Open Disney+ on wifi immediately before you leave
Do not just download in advance. Launch the app, let it reach the home screen, and start one downloaded episode for a few seconds while still connected. Several reviewers report that a download prepared days earlier fails while a session opened the same day works. If the app asks you to sign in at this point, you have just avoided the problem rather than caused it.
Step 2: Do not sign out, and do not switch profiles before travelling
The reviews that end badly almost all involve a sign-out. Switching profiles, changing wifi networks and toggling airplane mode all appear in reports immediately before the lockout. Leave the app signed in on the profile you intend to watch.
Step 3: Start playback before you go offline, not after
Multiple reviewers describe playback that survives going offline mid-episode but refuses to start once already offline. Begin the episode while you still have a connection, then switch to airplane mode. It is a workaround rather than a fix, and it is the one most consistent with the reports.
Step 4: Avoid leaving the app during offline playback
The most detailed report in the set describes the failure triggering after switching to the camera for a moment. If you are relying on downloads, avoid backgrounding the app. Turning the screen off is also reported to reset progress to the start of the episode.
Step 5: Have a fallback for anything that actually matters
Two of the Polish reviews and several US ones describe this failing on flights with children. Every other major streaming app in these reviews is named as working. If the downloads exist to keep a child occupied for nine hours, do not make Disney+ the only copy.
What Else Is in These Reviews
Offline playback is the largest functional cluster, but it is not the largest cluster overall, and it would be misleading to imply it is.
44 of the 263 US reviews, 16.7%, are about advertising, which is the biggest single theme. The specific complaint is not that ads exist but that ad volume is mixed far louder than the programme, on a service marketed to families:
I have paid for this for about 3 years, but about a year ago, I used it for my baby to sleep, and than an ad would come on, and the Ad was 5 times louder than the TV show or movie. ads woke him up every time.
20 reviews, 7.6%, are about price, usually renewals. 10, 3.8%, are about the household check rejecting a TV on the same network as the phone, which shows up in German, Italian, Spanish, Portuguese and Polish too. And 14 US reviews quote a specific error code, most often error 9, which appeared five times.
None of those are the reason we wrote this article. Ads and price are decisions rather than defects, and you can see them coming before you subscribe. A download that works in the living room and fails on the plane is the one that costs you something you cannot get back.
The Bottom Line
Disney+ rates 4.32 on Google Play and 4.59 on the App Store, and with 500 million installs the overwhelming majority of use produces no complaint at all. The offline failure is narrower than those ratings suggest and more specific than the ratings can show: 15.2% of recent US negatives, 8.1% of 640 international ones, and a mechanism that four German-language reviewers describe the same way.
If you use Disney+ downloads for flights, the practical takeaway is one line. Open the app on wifi right before you leave, start playback before you go offline, and do not sign out.
