Google Wallet Card Swipe Gone: 48 Reviews Explain (2026)
On 6 October 2026 Google Wallet replaced its card carousel with a vertical stack. We read all 48 reviews that complain about it: the extra taps, the missing card labels, why older app versions got it too, and the users who asked for it.
On the morning of 6 October 2026, Google Wallet users opened the app to pay and found that the card carousel was gone. Instead of swiping left or right to the card they wanted, they now had to pull down a vertical stack, tap a card, and close the list again. Within two days it was the biggest single complaint in Google Wallet's Google Play reviews.
We read every review that describes the change to find out what exactly moved, who got it, what people miss most, and whether there is any way back.
Quick Answer: Why Can't You Swipe Between Cards in Google Wallet?
Since 6 October 2026, Google Wallet shows payment cards as a vertical stack instead of a horizontal carousel. 48 English-language Google Play reviews complain about it, 33 of them with one star. The two biggest problems are extra taps (14 reviews say switching cards now takes two or three steps instead of one swipe) and missing card labels (16 say they can no longer see a card's nickname or last digits, so identical bank cards are impossible to tell apart). The new layout reached users on older app versions in the same hours, which points to a change switched on by Google rather than an update you can skip. No reviewer found a setting to bring the carousel back, and Google answered only 2 of the 48 reviews.
How We Counted
We pulled the 3,000 most recent English-language Google Play reviews of Google Wallet, covering 23 July to 8 October 2026 (our sample ends at 10:17 UTC on 8 October). The app holds 4.34 stars from 2,249,802 ratings on Google Play, 227,065 of them one star. Google Wallet has no separate App Store listing; iPhone users pay with Apple Wallet.
We searched for "swipe", "vertical", "horizontal", "carousel", "stack", "sideways" and phrases about switching or selecting cards, then read every negative review from 3 October onward in full. 48 reviews complain about the new card layout: 33 one star, 9 two star, 4 three star and 2 four star. We left out reviews that complain about "the new UI" or "the update" without saying what changed.
The first one is timestamped 08:39 UTC on 6 October:
The latest update has made card selection even more awkward because there are no card details shown on the front carousel. I have 3 accounts with the same bank and now can't tell one from another at a glance.
Before that morning, Google Wallet was getting about 19 negative reviews a day in our sample (205 between 25 September and 5 October). On 6 October it got 40, and 17 of them were about the card stack. On 7 October it got 49, and 23 were about the card stack. For two days, close to half of the app's negative reviews were about one design change.
What Changed
Reviewers describe the same before and after. Before: the card you were about to pay with sat on the home screen, its nickname and last digits underneath it, and a sideways swipe moved to the next card. After: the cards sit in a collapsed stack. A downward swipe or a tap opens the full list, you pick a card, and you close the list with the X in the corner.
the new update removed the ability to swipe between cards. now you have to tap, select another card, and then click X. a one gesture task has become three. no reason for this update, which degrades user experience.
14 of the 48 count the extra steps in some form: "two clicks and a swipe", "a 2-3 step process", "tap twice". One reviewer explains what it costs someone who switches between the same two cards all day:
After the latest update, the swipe-to-switch card option has disappeared. Before, I could easily switch between my two most frequently used cards with a simple swipe. Now, I have to open the card list and manually select the card I want.
The Bigger Problem: You Can't Tell Your Cards Apart
The extra taps are the most common complaint, but the one that comes up in the angriest reviews is that the card labels disappeared. 16 reviews say they can no longer tell at a glance which card is which, or which one is about to be charged, because the nickname and last digits no longer show under the card. That is a small change for someone with one Visa and one Mastercard. It is a real problem for anyone with two cards from the same bank, and several reviewers point out that their cards have identical artwork.
Update made it virtually impossible to tell my debit cards apart! Previously showed name under the card images. Now it doesn't. Image for both cards is identical and cannot be changed! Used to be able to scroll left and right to select card.
Latest update is utter garbage. Switching cards used to require swiping to find the right card, with each nickname clearly visible. Now you have to tap twice to be able to switch cards, and the nicknames are only visible if you THEN swipe left. Major usability downgrade.
The second review above also describes the only workaround anyone reports: after opening a card, the nickname shows again if you swipe left. Another reviewer describes the same thing from the other side, tapping a card at random just to read its number:
A couple of days ago the app got an update which changed the way the stored cards are displayed. Now I can't see the active card identifier. I had to click once to open the "wallet" with cards, then click a random one and only then I can see it's number.
Three Smaller Things That Moved
Beyond the stack itself, reviewers name three more changes from the same day:
| What reviewers say changed | Reviews |
|---|---|
| Recent transactions no longer shown under the card | 3 |
| Reordering cards does not change the order on the main screen | 3 |
| Leaving the card list takes a tap on the X | 3 |
On transactions, Google replied to one of the reviews with the new path: "Open the Google Wallet app, tap on the card you want to view transaction for, tap Details, then Activity." It is one of only 2 replies Google gave to the 48 reviews.
Worst update ever. Cards are now displayed vertical so we can't see card numbers. Reordering of cards doesn't work!
It Arrived on Every Version at Once
If an app update had brought the stack, the complaints would cluster on the newest build. They mostly do, but not entirely:
| App version named in the review | Reviews |
|---|---|
| 26.39.993999421 | 32 |
| 26.39.987297524 | 9 |
| 26.38.985592722 | 5 |
| 26.37.981219770 | 1 |
| 24.44.695355101 | 1 |
Two details point to a change switched on from Google's side. Version 26.39.987297524 already appears in our sample from 2 October, four days before the first complaint, and 7 of the 48 reviewers were on older builds and still got the new layout on 6 or 7 October. That is the same pattern we found when TikTok's bunny chat bubbles disappeared on every app version at once.
It was also not the first sighting. Three reviews in early September describe the same switch, which suggests some users got it a month earlier:
App was fine until they rolled out an update changing the swipe from horizontal to vertical to select the payment method. There I was at checkout unable to find the correct card. I had to dig the physical card out of my wallet.
Not Everyone Hates It
The stack is what some users had been asking for. In August and September, four reviews asked Google Wallet for a vertical, stacked or list view of cards, mostly people with many cards who were tired of swiping through all of them:
Needs a stacked card view option. The current horizontal slide layout is inefficient and slow. Swiping through every single card to find the right one takes too much time at the checkout counter.
When it arrived, three 5-star reviews praised it. One is an update to an older review that had asked Google to make the app look more like a wallet:
10/6/26- Finally! IThe new vertical debit/credit card layout is so much better. It looks more like a wallet and access to each digital card is quicker and easier than the old carousel design.
The split is easy to read from the reviews. People with many cards wanted a list. People who switch between two cards wanted the swipe. Several of the 48 ask for a setting that lets each user pick:
guys change it back or at least give us the option to swipe right for the different cards. I'm not going to use the upwards one. why are you forcing us into this?
Four reviewers say the new layout copies Apple's. One 4-star review sums up the mood:
why has changing cards gone from a horizontal swipe to a vertical swipe?! Feels like copying Apple wallet for the sake of it.
What You Can Do
Don't reinstall or roll back. The layout reached users on builds from before 6 October, so an older version is not a way back. No reviewer reports that reinstalling or clearing data restored the carousel.
Look for the nickname after you open a card. One reviewer says the card nickname appears if you swipe left once a card is open. If your cards share the same artwork, that is currently the quickest way to check which one is active before you tap.
Find transactions under Details. Google's own reply gives the path: tap the card, tap Details, then Activity.
Check which card is selected before you tap the terminal. Four reviews from 6 and 7 October describe a payment going to a card they did not pick. Google Wallet reviews have reported charges going to the default card instead of the selected one since at least July, so this is not new, but the hidden labels make it harder to notice before it happens.
Don't expect an answer on the Play Store. Five reviewers ask for an option to choose between the carousel and the stack. Google replied to 2 of the 48 reviews, and its reply to one of them points users to Google's support page rather than answering there.
Not every reviewer stayed angry. A 4-star review from 8 October reads, in full:
Ok now, once I got my head round the new layout. Thanks
