McDonald's App Won't Open? What 411 Reviews Show (2026)

By Unstar · Editorial Team

The McDonald's app opens to the golden arches and stops. We read 411 recent 1-3 star reviews to find the fix people use and what it quietly costs.

If the McDonald's app opens to a white screen with the golden arches and never gets past it, the reviews agree on two things.

The workaround that works is uninstalling and reinstalling. And that workaround is why a second group of reviewers is angrier than you are, because for some of them the reinstall took their rewards points with it.

That is the short answer. The rest of this article is the evidence, because the useful part is knowing how widespread this is, which version it lands on, and what to try before you uninstall anything.

How We Counted

On 7 August 2026 we pulled the 500 newest US Google Play reviews and the 300 newest US App Store reviews for the McDonald's app, then swept fourteen more language storefronts for reports that never surface in English.

On Google Play, 419 of the 500 were rated 1-3 stars. After dropping reviews too short to categorise, 210 remained, spanning 1 to 7 August 2026: 164 one star, 30 two star, 16 three star. On the App Store, 271 of the 300 newest were rated 1-3 stars and 201 were long enough to categorise. That is 411 categorised complaints, plus 83 more from the non-US storefronts.

Seven days for 500 Play reviews is a fast clip. What is unusual is how few of them are about the food.

The Rating Gap Is Not What It Looks Like

A 4.05 on Play against a 4.84 on the App Store is a 0.79 gap, one of the widest we have measured on an app this size. The tempting read is that the iOS build is healthier.

The recent reviews do not support that read. All 201 categorised App Store complaints were filed against version 26.54.1, the same build Play users are on, and 271 of the 300 newest iOS reviews were negative. Both store ratings are lifetime averages accumulated over a decade, so they tell you about the app's history, not about this week. When you look only at what people are writing now, the two platforms describe the same app with the same problem.

One in Five Reviews Says the App Never Opens

42 of the 210 Play reviews, 20.0%, say the app does not open, hangs on the logo, or stops responding entirely. They appear on every single day of the seven-day window, which rules out a one-off outage.

The descriptions are unusually consistent, down to the screen people are staring at:

App doesn't even open anymore. Opens to a white screen with the golden arches, and that's as far as it ever goes. uninstalled and reinstalled multiple times same issue

The app has become completely unusable. Every time I try to open the app it just sits there on a white screen with the golden arches. It never launches.

App no longer works. Just shows the McDonald's logo but never opens. I have uninstalled and reinstalled and turned my phone off and back on with no luck.

One reviewer puts a duration on it, which matters because it tells you this is not a bad afternoon:

I love the app but it's been down going on 2 weeks and that's frustrating a large company can't fix this quicker

The Fix Everyone Found Is Also the Problem

51 of the 210 reviews, 24.3%, mention uninstalling and reinstalling. That is the single largest cluster in the entire set, larger than the crash cluster it exists to solve. Eighteen reviews mention both, describing the reinstall specifically as the thing that gets the app open again.

The catch is that it does not stay fixed:

The app isn't working Edit: I first cleared the cache, then uninstalled, then reinstalled. Afterward, I was able to place an order. 2nd edit: Now the app isn't working again...

The app does not register that I picked up my order, which means that it doesn't clear out the last order and won't let me place a new order. So every time I want to use it I have to uninstall the app and reinstall it.

For some people the full ritual does not work at all:

Previous issue mainly resolved but now... Update Aug 2026 The app completely stops responding, I even uninstalled, restarted the phone, forced cleared cache, reinstalled, and still gets hung loading the app eventually times out.

The Part Worth Knowing Before You Uninstall

Here is where the workaround turns expensive. Rewards points live on your account, not on the handset, so a reinstall should be harmless. Seven reviewers report losing points anyway, in most cases because the reinstall dropped them into a state where they could not log back into the same account.

this is the 2nd time I have had to reinstall my app. the 1st time I lost 11,000 points and a week later I had to reinstall it again because it would not work.

This is nuts this is the 5th time I got a decent amount of points in the app to get something and as soon as I do it kicks me out of the app and deletes my account and ALLLL of my points

One reviewer on the Mexican storefront had clearly worked out the risk before taking it, and stopped:

Spanish

tengo mas de 13,000 puntos que no he usado y de la nada la app dejo de funcionar no me deja entrar y se que si la desintalo ya no estaran mis puntos...

That is the trade the reviews describe. The reinstall usually restores the app, and occasionally costs you the balance you were opening the app to spend. Which is why the order below matters.

Step 1: Force stop the app before anything else

Long-press the McDonald's icon, open App info, and tap Force stop, then reopen. Several reviewers describe an app that only fails on the second launch of the day, which is the signature of a stuck process rather than a corrupted install. This costs you nothing and is reversible, unlike everything after it.

Step 2: Clear the cache, not the storage

In App info, open Storage and choose Clear cache. Do not choose Clear storage or Clear data. Cache holds temporary files and clearing it is safe. Clearing storage signs you out and puts you in exactly the position the reviewers above ended up in, with an account you may not get back into cleanly.

Step 3: Check whether an update is waiting

Open the Play Store or App Store listing and look for an Update button rather than an Open button. Reviewers on both stores describe being pushed into an update prompt at the worst possible moment, one iOS user noting the app worked at home and demanded an update in the car park:

It’s funny to me how every time I open the app before I get to the location it works and lets me look through the deals, but the second I pull into a McDonalds parking lot it needs an “update”.

Step 4: Confirm your login method first, then reinstall

If steps 1 to 3 fail, write down which method you sign in with, whether that is email, Google, Facebook or Apple, and which address is on the account. Reviewers who lost points overwhelmingly describe signing back in with a different method than they originally used and landing on an empty account. Only then uninstall and reinstall.

Step 5: If your points are gone, do not open a second account

Several reviewers describe creating new accounts after losing access, which permanently splits the balance across accounts nobody can merge:

Every other month I get logged out and can’t use my email no matter what I create a new one I have thousands of thousands of points wasted I have made 4 different accounts how can I get thousands of points back

Contact support from the original email address instead, and expect it to be slow.

The Other Third of the Complaints Is the Rewards Programme

70 of the 210 reviews, 33.3%, are about deals, points or rewards rather than the app failing to launch, making this the largest theme in the set once the crash and reinstall clusters are separated out.

Two sub-patterns come up repeatedly. Codes that time out before you reach the counter:

How you going to lock me out from using deals for 10 minutes when I haven't placed an order in over 2 days.

And the kiosk handoff, which several reviewers describe as the point where the whole thing collapses:

Today it wouldn't even let me log into my account at the kiosk regardless of what I tried and never refreshed the number, so I just left.

Orders That Take the Money Anyway

A smaller but sharper group describes the app charging for an order the restaurant never received. These are worth separating from the crash cluster because the failure happens after payment:

I placed a mobile order, and the app crashed, causing the order to not go through even though the payment for the order was taken.

Ordered on the app and went to pickup my order, only to find out the location had no power and couldn't make my order. The app didn't say anything about the location being closed, and just took my money.

The App Store set has its own version, where payment itself refuses:

Irritating how the app suddenly gives an error message when trying to pay. Literally can’t even take money after trying 2 payment methods.

Doesn’t work, stays stuck in loop and cannot hit arrived. Store sees is keeps auto cancelling order.

Outside the US, the Same Two Sentences

The non-US storefronts returned 83 categorised negatives across fourteen languages. What stands out is not new failure modes but how precisely they repeat the US ones.

A reviewer on the Saudi storefront describes the login screen that will not move:

Arabic

لا يريد الدخول يقول فى مشكله الان حاول فى وقت لاحق وانا بحاول بعد يوم نفس الرساله

A Korean reviewer rules out their own handset before blaming the app, which is the same test the tablet owners ran:

Korean

너무 잘 안되요. 이 앱을 설치해서 쓰려고 할때마다 전화기도 다시시작해서 설치도 해보고 별짓을 다 해봤지만 애러가 너무 많이 납니다.

And a Spanish-language reviewer independently reports the same two-week duration the US reviewers gave:

Spanish

Hola ya tengo dos semana que esta aplicacion no esta funcionando en mi telefono, llamo y no me resuelven nada.

What These Reviews Are Not About

We check this on every restaurant and retail app, because store reviews are usually a dumping ground for complaints about the company rather than the software. Amazon's app reviews, when we read them last week, were 36.6% about late deliveries and wrong orders.

This set is different. Only 15 of the 210 Play reviews, 7.1%, contain no app-related signal at all, and only 8 are purely about food or service. Cold fries, a missing Happy Meal and a rude manager are all in there, and they are a rounding error next to the launch failures.

That is the strongest single argument that this is a real software problem rather than brand noise. When 92.9% of the negative reviews for a fast food app are about the app, the app is the story.

The Bottom Line

The McDonald's app currently rates 4.05 on Google Play against a lifetime 4.84 on the App Store, and both figures describe the past rather than this week. In the last seven days, one in five negative reviewers could not get the app to open at all, and a quarter of them are reinstalling it, some of them repeatedly, some of them on a schedule.

If that is you, work down the five steps above in order. The reinstall almost certainly fixes it. Just make sure you know how you log in before you reach for it, because the reviews are full of people who found out afterwards.

Read the current 1-3 star reviews yourself on the McDonald's review page, check the code-computed trust summary at is the McDonald's app legit, or compare the iOS listing, where the same version is drawing the same complaints behind a much higher lifetime score.
