Starbucks App Browser Not Supported: 41 Reviews (2026)

By Unstar · Editorial Team

Since September 2026 the Starbucks Android app says your browser is not supported and asks for Google Chrome to sign in. We read all 41 reviews about it: who is locked out, why reinstalling does not help, and what still works.

You are in line, you open the Starbucks app to pay, and instead of your barcode you get a message about a web browser. You are not in a browser. You are in the app.

Since September 2026, Starbucks Android users who do not use Google Chrome have been getting that message, and many of them can no longer sign in at all. We read the reviews to find out who is affected, what the app is asking for, and what still works.

Starbucks holds 4.84 stars from 1,576,047 Google Play ratings. A rating that high barely moves when a few dozen people are locked out, which is why the reviews are the only place this shows up.

Quick Answer: Why Does the Starbucks App Say My Browser Is Not Supported?

Since 7 September 2026, 41 Google Play reviews of the Starbucks app say it now requires Google Chrome to sign in, 35 of them with one star. The app opens its sign-in page in a browser, and on phones where Chrome is disabled or not the browser in use, it shows "Looks like your browser isn't supported" and asks the user to install or enable Chrome. The complaints come from eight different app versions, old and new, so updating or reinstalling does not change it: 3 reviewers say a reinstall or clearing the app's data did not help. Starbucks replied to none of the 41.

How We Counted

We pulled the 4,050 most recent Google Play reviews of the Starbucks app on 4 October 2026, covering 26 December 2025 to 3 October 2026. Since 7 September there are 408 reviews, 169 of them with 1 to 3 stars.

We searched every review for Chrome, browser, "not supported", Firefox, Brave, Edge, DuckDuckGo, Samsung Internet and similar words, which returned 54 reviews, and read all of them. 41 describe the new Chrome requirement. The other 13 are about older sign-in problems, the age check, receipts or a crash.

Those 41 are 23% of all negative reviews since 7 September (39 of 169). Over the same weeks, only 3 negative reviews mention the age verification problem that dominated the summer, which we covered in the Starbucks age verification lockout.

What the App Says

Reviewers quote the message in slightly different words. The most complete version:

As of 09/15/2026, Starbucks App on Android is garbage. Using Galaxy A15 5G. App auto redirects to Google Chrome to sign in, preventing my biometric sign in. Unable to sign in due to error message "Looks like your browser isn't supported. Install Google Chrome". Tried clearing cache and data, and an app re-install. Didn't fix it. Whatever update you (Starbucks) people did, 👏🏼 👏🏼. Congrats. You soft locked mine and EVERY Android users ability to sign in.

Another reviewer gets a variant that tells them to launch Chrome:

I have the updated app and did before this new issue started: when I launch the app on my phone, it tells me "This browser is not supported. Launch in Google Chrome." I am in the app, not in any browser. Ridiculous. McCafé it is, then.

And a third, who saw it as it happened, gets a second screen after the first:

this is happening right now. suddenly I can't log in , says 'does not support this browser '. what browser? it's an app. then it says 'enable Google Chrome to use the app'. what? so this is a Google problem?

Who Is Locked Out

The reviews point to two groups. The larger one has Chrome on the phone but switched off: 9 reviewers say the app tells them to enable Chrome, which is what Android calls turning a disabled preinstalled app back on. A smaller group does not have Chrome at all: 3 say the app tells them to install it.

Many of them chose not to use Chrome on purpose. 3 name Firefox, one Brave and one Edge, and 2 say they are trying to remove Google services from their phone. Their objection is less the bug than the requirement:

You have to use Google Chrome to sign in. Any other app on my phone will bring up Firefox or display its own login form. Starbucks is engineered to only open the login form in Google Chrome. There's no reason for this. It's not more secure. It's not even easier for them to develop. They had to go out of their way to build a stupid anti-feature.

The timing makes it worse. 3 reviewers say the app signed them out first, so they only found the requirement when they tried to get back in. 2 hit it in line at the counter, and 5 mention a balance, gift card or rewards they could no longer reach through the app:

after being logged in & using app for months. just stopped working & now says need to use google chrome for the app. I thought that's what i've been using the whole time on my phone. its so frustrating. in line to pay with my phone & wouldn't work.

The sign-in move also broke conveniences. One reviewer says it ended their biometric sign-in, and another that the passwords saved in their password manager no longer filled in, so they could not get into either of their two accounts.

Why Reinstalling Does Not Help

The reviews show this is not a bad app build. The first complaints, on 7 and 9 September, came from version 6.130, days before version 6.131 first appears in our sample on 16 September. Since then the same message has been reported on 6.131 (17 reviews), 6.130 (7), 6.132 (7) and four older versions, including 6.101 and 6.121.1. When the same change reaches old and new versions at once, it is coming from the sign-in page, not from the app installed on the phone.

That matches what the 3 reviewers who tried the usual fixes report. Clearing the cache and data, or uninstalling and reinstalling, changed nothing for any of them.

What Starbucks Tells Reviewers

Nothing, in this sample. Starbucks replied to none of the 41 reviews, and none of them says Starbucks gave a reason for the change. 8 say they have uninstalled the app or will stop using it:

Just had to uninstall because the app, which I've used for years, now won't function unless I enable Chrome on my phone. What a bizarre update. I'm not using Chrome and I'm not using this app any more either. Lost a customer 👋

What You Can Do

There is no setting inside the app that turns the requirement off. Based on what reviewers report, these are the options.

If you have Chrome but disabled it, turning it back on is what the app asks for. On most Android phones that is under Settings, then Apps, then Chrome, with an Enable button. None of the 41 reviewers says what happened after they did it, so we cannot confirm that the app signs in afterwards, or whether Chrome can be disabled again once you are in.

If you do not want Chrome on your phone, the Starbucks website still works in other browsers. One reviewer confirms it:

User it just to pay and reload my card, but it seems it is no longer available at Microsoft store. 2026-09 Edit: While website works on Android with Edge browser, the app itself complains that it needs Chrome and nothing else. Why?

They say the website works on Android in Edge while the app insists on Chrome. You lose the app's barcode, but you can still order ahead and check your balance on the website.

If you are already in line, a physical Starbucks card or a gift card still pays at the register, whatever the app is doing. Reloading it and checking the balance can be done on the website.

And if the message started after the app signed you out, do not reset your password because of it. One reviewer did, and the "forgot password" link did not get them past the sign-in screen either. The problem is the browser the sign-in page opens in, not the password.
