Chase App Dark Mode Stuck On? 215 Reviews (2026)

By Unstar · Editorial Team

Chase pushed dark mode onto Android with no in-app toggle, then dropped support for older phones. We read 215 recent 1-3 star reviews to see what that update cost users.

If you opened the Chase app in the first week of August and found it locked into a dark blue theme with no way to switch back, you are not looking at a setting you missed. There is no in-app theme toggle. The app follows your phone's system theme, and the only lever reviewers have found is changing the phone itself.

That is the short answer. The rest of this article is what 215 recent negative reviews show about the update that caused it, and about a second change that landed in the same fortnight and is costing some people the app entirely.

On 5 August 2026 we pulled the 500 newest US reviews from both stores. On Google Play, 205 of 500 were rated 1-3 stars, 152 of them one star, and 110 were long enough to categorise, spanning 19 July to 4 August 2026. On the App Store, 154 of 500 were 1-3 stars, 111 of them one star, and 105 were long enough to categorise, covering app versions 4.740 through 4.772. That is 215 categorised complaints across the two platforms.

Read those averages before reading anything below. Chase Mobile is one of the highest rated banking apps in either store, built on 11.5 million ratings between them. Nothing here says the app is bad. It says a specific set of changes shipped at the end of July, and the people affected by those changes are the ones writing this week.

The Theme Lock (20.9% of Android complaints)

23 of the 110 Android reviews are about the forced theme, which makes it the single largest cluster in the Android set. The complaint is not that dark mode exists. It is that it arrived tied to the system setting with no way to opt out inside the app.

They recently added a dark theme support, but force it to follow your system settings. I don't want dark mode in this app and there's no way to turn it off. Very hard to see things, making things inaccessible.

Stop forcing system-wide dark mode on a banking app. Reviewing account details and numbers on a dark screen is terrible for contrast. Add an in-app light mode toggle, it’s basic UX.

how to disable dark mode? can't find the setting anywhere. I prefer the light mode.

Please add an independent theme toggle in the settings of the new Chase app (version 4.770). Forcing dark mode makes the app difficult to read for many users.

One reviewer went looking for the usual culprit first, and ruled it out:

The app itself is working fine but now the app forces itself into dark mode with no option to revert it back. Just because my system settings are in dark mode does not mean that I want my banking app to be in dark mode. Please give us an option to toggle it on and off. I've already checked all app settings and ensure that my "force dark mode" setting under developer options was off.

That matters because Android's developer-options force-dark switch is the first thing anyone suggests. It is not the cause here.

It Is an Accessibility Problem, Not a Taste Problem

The reviews that stand out are not from people who prefer light mode. They are from people who cannot read the screen.

Please change the blue background inside the app back to white background because I cannot see very well.

im color blind an the new update on the app the background is blue ?? very bad update with Samsung mix

The new color scheme is fine until you try to view the spending summary, then the transaction is barely readable with the dark blue on blue color.

And the rollout looks incomplete rather than deliberate. One reviewer describes the theme applying to the home screen but not to the screens with the numbers on them:

Latest August 3 update implements Android OS Galaxy UI 8.5 dark theme on main page but on balances and other sub pages it stills show light them and numbers are not viewable. shutdown restart, cleared cache, reinstall nothing works.

When It Started

Every Google Play review carries a date, so the onset is visible rather than guessed.

Date (2026)Reviews about the theme
30 July3
31 July4
1 August2
2 August6
3 August5
4 August3

First appearance 30 July, still arriving on 4 August. Six days, no gap, and no reviewer in the set reports finding a setting that fixes it.

The iOS Mirror Image

Here is the part that makes this more than a complaint about one release. On the App Store, dark mode appears in exactly 2 of 105 reviews, and both are asking for the opposite thing.

This app does not support dark mode on IOS, making it difficult to read for people with bad eyes. The Android version does support dark mode.

As a low-vision user, having scalable fonts and dark mode would make the app much more friendly.

Same app, same bank, same month. Android users cannot turn dark mode off and iOS users cannot turn it on, and both groups are asking for the same missing control: a theme setting inside the app. A toggle would resolve every review quoted in this section, on both platforms.

The Android 13 Cutoff (15.5%)

The second big Android cluster has nothing to do with colours. 17 reviews describe being cut off from the app entirely because their phone runs an older version of Android, with an end-of-July deadline named repeatedly.

Chase app says it will only support Android 13 & up after 7/31. I don't have anything that supports Android 13.

I use this app 50 times a day but after the 31st July, it is telling me I won't be able to unless I update my phone to android os 13

Galaxy S10 users gone! End of July they are dumping a huge group of people in the name of "security". They know we can't update to a new Android version and forcing us to buy new phones.

Phone is only 5 years old and still runs all the other banking apps. I shouldn't have to buy a new phone just to use your app.

Raising a minimum OS version is normal and every bank does it eventually. Two things about the handling show up in the reviews. The first is that the web fallback is not equivalent:

No longer supports my only-2-year-old phone's OS, for no real reason. Equivalent functionality such as cashing checks is not available through web site.

Mobile check deposit is the feature people name, and it is the one thing a browser cannot replace. The second is the consequence, which several reviewers state plainly:

The app no longer works, so I'm cancelling my credit card.

Whether they follow through is unknowable from a review. What is knowable is that the cutoff moved a group of customers from mild annoyance to closing accounts inside two weeks.

What Got Quietly Removed (8.2% Android, 11.4% iOS)

Across both stores, a recurring complaint is not that something broke but that something was taken out. These are the tools people used to reconcile their own money.

They removed the rolling total from your transaction list, now you must manually track your transactions to verify they add/subtract funds properly.

Before last update there was a filter to see posted transactions only so pending did not display. You could reconcile posted to current balance. Now that filter is not available. Regression in utility of app.

No longer is the statement balance visible anywhere on the app. The PDFs of the statements are deep-sixed so good luck finding them

It's hard to believe that I can't search for specific transactions in the app - this is such a basic and essential feature.

When I add a note to a transaction I can’t see the note I added in my list of transactions.

new version very buggy. memos don't save anymore. charges are showing as duplicates

The pattern is consistent enough to name: the app is getting better at showing you a balance and worse at letting you audit one. A reviewer with a travel card puts the cost in one sentence:

I'm endlessly frustrated with the lack of running totals for transactions and the unreliability of the main balance amount shown. It's impossible to compare against your own records or even the monthly Chase statements.

One iOS review describes a layout problem precise enough to be a bug report:

The temporary "Action required" banner unpredictably injects at the top of the screen, pushing the button grid down. Because it doesn't load instantly, muscle memory causes users to tap where a button like "Transfer" normally sits

The False Rooted-Phone Warning (2.7% Android)

A small cluster, but worth flagging because the advice people are given does not work. Three Android reviewers report the app refusing access on the grounds that the device is rooted or infected, on phones that are neither.

falsely claims my new Pixel 10 os rooted or contains malware when it isn't rooted, doesn't contain malware, and passes every security check for every other app including tap to pay using Google wallet

Unable to review my credit score after the update on the latest Android OS. Reinstalled the app and clear the cache. No go. Still not fixed. Keeps saying my phone is rooted or malware which is not true.

07/22/2026:STILL Giving me a "rooted phone warning or malware" when accessing my mortgage information? My phone is NOT rooted and I do Not have malware.

Note the third one: the warning fires on the mortgage section while every other account in the same app opens normally. That points at one hardened module rather than a device-wide verdict, which is why reinstalling does not help.

Ads Inside the Bank (5.5% Android, 5.7% iOS)

How many times do I need to answer no, I do not want what you are offering? When I logged in the app asksed me if I want to split the payment on a credit card purchase. I said no thanks. Then I paid a bill. While doing that, at every step the app kept asking me the same question again and again!

It seems that every time I use this app, my flow is disturbed by a pop-up solicitation for a credit card I do not want.

Chase’s self-promotion has made reading my list of credit card charges difficult and tedious. Stop trying to sell me more stuff. I’m already a customer.

ui buggy since last update. offers showing in transactions area, seeing repeated transactions no longer sorted correctly by date.

The last one is the interesting one, because it puts promotions inside the transaction list itself. Combined with the removal of the running total and the transaction filter, the trend a reviewer is describing is a ledger with more marketing in it and fewer accounting tools around it.

Sign-In Friction (10.0% Android, 14.3% iOS)

The largest iOS cluster is authentication, and the shape is the same on both platforms: biometrics that stop sticking, and lockouts that require a phone call.

fingerprint sign-in stopped working for me this morning. when I tried to reset the settings by turning it off then back on, it doesn't stay turned back on.

I have Touch ID enabled. And when I use it, I still have to enter my phone passcode for Chase to open the app. Used to work.

Huge pain just to log in, log in with the same password and username 4 times and it'll only work the last time

How can I be locked out if I just used the app yesterday?

The Same Two Failures in Other Languages

Non-English reviews for the same app, scanned separately, land on the same two changes: the OS cutoff and the post-update breakage.

The last Russian review is the rooted-device warning again, described from the other side: the app scanning the phone for modified apps and then withholding the credit score. Note also that both check-deposit complaints come from outside the English set, on older Galaxy hardware, which is the same population the Android 13 cutoff removes.

What We Did Not Count

30 of the 110 Android reviews and most of the 58 remaining iOS reviews are complaints about the bank, not the app: interest rates, credit-limit decisions, overdraft and wire fees, branch service, and phone support. Some are furious and several are specific, but an engineer working on Chase Mobile cannot fix any of them, so counting them as app defects would inflate every number above.

We also did not treat the Android 13 decision itself as a defect. Dropping old OS versions is a legitimate security call. What the reviews establish is narrower: the cutoff landed with no advance warning inside the app, the browser fallback cannot do mobile check deposit, and it arrived in the same fortnight as a theme change that made the app harder to read for the people who kept it.

What To Do Right Now

  • To get light mode back on Android, change your phone's system theme, not the app. There is no in-app toggle in version 4.770. On most Android phones it is Settings, then Display, then Light. Reviewers who tried everything else confirm this is the only lever that works today.
  • Do not turn off force-dark in developer options and expect a fix. A reviewer already tested that. It is unrelated.
  • Before you buy a phone over the cutoff, check your actual Android version under Settings, then About phone. If you are on 13 or above and still blocked, that is a different problem and worth a support call.
  • If you are cut off and need to deposit a check, plan for a branch or ATM. The website covers balances, transfers and payments, but reviewers specifically name check deposit as the gap.
  • If you get a rooted-phone or malware warning, note which section triggers it. One reviewer reports it only on the mortgage account while everything else opens, which is far more useful to support than saying the app will not load.
  • If you relied on the running total or transaction search, export your statements. Those tools are the ones reviewers report missing, and no in-app workaround appears anywhere in these 215 reviews.

The Bottom Line

Chase Mobile is a 4.80 and 4.84 star app that most people use without ever writing a word about it. What the last three weeks of reviews describe is narrower and more fixable than a bad app: one release that removed a choice, and one deadline that removed a group of customers.

The theme complaint and the accessibility complaint are the same complaint, and the fix for it already exists on the other platform's wish list. A theme setting inside the app would empty out the biggest Android cluster in this set and the only iOS request in it at the same time.

Read the current 1-3 star reviews yourself on the Chase review page, check the code-computed trust summary at is Chase legit, or compare the iOS listing, where the same customers rate the app slightly higher and ask for the feature Android users are trying to escape.
