Expedia Refund Problems: 238 Reviews Examined (2026)
We read 238 recent Expedia 1-3 star reviews: 28% are refunds refused or stalled, 21% support that loops, and 11% are not about the app at all.
We read 238 recent 1-3 star reviews for the Expedia app on 4 August 2026, 189 from the US App Store and 49 from US Google Play. The first thing the data showed was a measurement problem worth stating up front: 11% of them are not about the app at all. They are hotel reviews, about smells, peeling paint, a cold pool, a maintenance worker walking in unannounced. Expedia prompts for property reviews and some of them land on the app listing.
Stripping those out leaves 177 genuine app and service complaints. Within those, refunds are 28.2%, support that cannot help is 20.9%, the app failing at the booking step is 9.0%, and being charged twice or more than quoted is 8.5%. This article is built on those 177.
Quick Answer: What Do People Complain About Most?
Not price, and not the interface. The dominant complaint is what happens after something goes wrong: a refund that is owed, refused, or stalled, and a support system reviewers cannot get a human answer out of. Those two themes together are roughly half of all complaints.
That is a specific and useful finding. Expedia's app works well enough to take the booking. The reviews cluster on what happens when the booking needs to change.
The Rating Does Not Show This
| Store | Rating | Ratings count |
|---|---|---|
| Google Play | 4.81 | 1,640,037 |
| App Store (iOS) | 4.79 | 5,849,496 |
Both scores are high and they agree with each other, which is different from apps where one platform is clearly worse. With 7.4 million ratings between them, a bad month is statistically invisible. The rating tells you most bookings go fine. It cannot tell you what happens to the ones that do not, which is the only thing you actually want to know before handing over money for a trip.
Top Complaints in Expedia 1-3 Star Reviews
Shares are of the 177 app and service complaints, assigned to the complaint each review leads with.
1. Refunds Refused, Partial, or Never Arriving (28.2%)
The biggest cluster by some distance. The recurring shape is not "they said no" but "nobody will take responsibility for saying yes."
Despite providing clear documentation and evidence, Expedia refuses to process my refund without confirmation from the property owner. They claim the owner is unreachable by phone and that no further action can be taken at this time.
Was unable to refund a hotel i was unable to stay at! Took forever to conclude that I still had to pay as well, just do not use this app.
Was ready to book my vacation then they decided to change my price by 600 dollars after I pressed book. My package was cancelled and now I have to wait to get a refund for my money.
Horrible experience! Had to sleep on the floor because they did not have the room I order, they said it was Expedia fault.
The first quote is the pattern in miniature: the refund is conditional on a third party Expedia itself says it cannot reach, and the customer is left holding a booking they cannot use.
2. Support That Loops and Cannot Escalate (20.9%)
This may be the worst app for customer service I have used in over 40 years of traveling. The Virtual Assistant and Chat are completely useless.
The customer service/virtual assistant is not able to understand simple responses and will just repeat itself putting the conversation into a loop.
Virtual agents do not understand the context and long wait to talk to any human and if you do not respond within, they disconnect the chat.
Agents do not help they disconnect without helping, i had one agent have be on hold for more than 30 minutes saying they called the rental, i reached out to rental they never called
The disconnect-on-idle behaviour in the third quote turns up repeatedly. Reviewers describe losing a queue position because they stepped away, then starting over.
3. The App Fails at the Moment You Book (9.0%)
The app is unusable as it locks up when trying to make a reservation or even look at a hotel.
Tried 3 times to book charged me each time but no book trip can not get support except text waste tons if time
This app is garbage all it does is crash. I have even deleted it and re-downloaded it and it still does it on any device.
Whenever I select a hotel to look at the app always freezes up and I can never move forward.
The second quote is the worst version of this: three attempts, three charges, no booking. That is where a technical bug turns into a billing dispute.
4. Charged Twice, or More Than the Quoted Price (8.5%)
I was charged twice time for the same booking and it is not first time, it's second times with me now.
When checking out of my hotel purchase, an offer popped up for trip insurance for $4.50. So, I opted for it. When I printed my receipt the charge was $9.00 for the insurance.
Advertised a 100$ statement credit then charged full price will not connect a supervisor and places you on hold and will not return to the call.
We were there 3 hours early and charged an extra $200. For 3 hours! Expedia is an agent for car rental and should not have passed the buck
5. Caught Between Expedia, the Airline, and the Hotel (4.5%)
The structural complaint. Booking through an intermediary adds a party, and reviewers report that each party points at the other.
Expedia stole my airline credits worth $150. The hung up on me several times when I was trying to use my credit.
Awful customer service. Book directly through the airline and resort. Had a trip totally derailed 2 years ago, and have received zero credit, apologies or compensation.
Tried to change time for pick up. Was told to contact car rental. Did that and was told to contact Expedia.
That last one is the loop stated plainly, and it is the single most repeated piece of advice in the whole review set: for anything that might need changing, book direct.
6. Bookings That Change, Vanish, or Were Never Made (5.6%)
Expedia have lost the second leg of my booking and their help system is completly useless. I am going to have wait until the day of travel and see what happens at the airport
It seemed to have dropped a reservation yesterday. I was fortunate to have found a room. It was the accessible room, the last room.
Low share, highest stakes. These are the reviews where someone finds out at a check-in desk.
What This Means Before You Book
- Screenshot everything at the moment of booking. Price, dates, cancellation policy, confirmation number. Several refund disputes in this set turn on what the screen said before a refresh.
- For anything you might need to change, book direct. This is the reviewers' own most repeated advice, and the third-party limbo cluster is why.
- Watch the insurance and add-on prices between the offer and the receipt. One reviewer reports $4.50 becoming $9.00.
- Do not walk away mid-chat. Reviewers report being disconnected for not replying fast enough, then losing their place.
- If a booking attempt errors, check your card before retrying. The three-charges-no-booking pattern starts with a retry.
Is Expedia Legit?
Yes, in the sense that matters: Expedia is a very large, real, publicly traded travel company, and the overwhelming majority of its bookings complete without incident. That is what the 4.79 and 4.81 reflect. The complaints here are not about whether the company exists or takes your money and disappears. They are about what recourse you have when a trip goes sideways, and the reviews say the honest answer is: less than if you had booked direct. For the trust-check framing specifically, see is Expedia legit.
The Bottom Line
Expedia's app is good at the part that makes money and weak at the part that costs money. Refunds and support are half of all complaints; the interface barely registers. The 11% of reviews that turn out to be hotel reviews rather than app reviews is worth remembering too, because it inflates the negative pile with things Expedia's engineers cannot fix.
