Hulu Not Working? What 191 Reviews Show (2026)
We read the 300 most recent US Google Play reviews for the Hulu app. 191 were 1-3 stars, and 83% of them landed on the two builds shipped this month. The reports are specific: an age restriction that locks adults out of accounts they pay for, playback that fails mid-episode, casting that stopped working, and an ad load that paying subscribers measured themselves. Here is what is broken and what actually helps.
On July 27, 2026 we pulled the 300 most recent Hulu reviews from the US Google Play store. 191 of them, or 64%, were 1-3 stars.
One number in that data set matters more than the rest. Of those 191 negative reviews, 159 were filed against version 6.30.0 or 6.31.0, the two builds Hulu shipped this month. That is 83% of the complaints concentrated in a few weeks of releases, which is what a regression looks like rather than a slow decline.
The lifetime averages tell a calmer story. Hulu holds 4.46 from 1,588,459 Google Play ratings, with 137,936 one-star ratings sitting inside that average, and 4.57 from 1,429,368 App Store ratings across 100M+ installs. Both numbers are real. They describe years of use, not the app you downloaded this week.
One structural note before the clusters. The Play listing shows no in-app purchases, because Hulu bills subscriptions outside the Play Store. That detail becomes important at the end, when we get to why people who cancel keep getting charged.
Quick Answer: Is Hulu Down, or Is It Your Account?
In almost none of these reports is Hulu down. The failure that fully locks people out is an age restriction message that appeared with this month's builds, and it hits adults who have no children on the account and no parental controls set. If you are staring at "your access is restricted" right now, that is the bug, not your settings.
The single most common complaint, though, is not a bug at all. It is the ad load on paid plans, and no troubleshooting step fixes it. Both are below, ranked by how often they came up.
The Failure Clusters, Ranked by Frequency
Percentages are shares of the 191 negative reviews we read, matched by keyword and then checked by hand. They overlap, because one review often reports two problems.
1. Ads on Plans People Already Pay For (20%)
The largest cluster by a wide margin, and the most quantified. One reviewer did the arithmetic rather than just complaining:
- "The Ads continue to get progressively worse and longer and with shorter gaps in between... The Bear S5 E2 run time is 25m 20s (25.33 minutes of show) 30s start ad, 105s ads, at 3 different points = 345s of add 345s = 6.75 minutes of ads ads to show ratio 6.75 / 25.33 = 26.7% of an episode is ads Over 25% of my viewing is ads for a $30+ Subscription"
- "Watching the ad-having tier, and in a 23min episode, there's consistently 4-5 1.5min ad breaks. 7min of ads for 20min of show?"
- "there was genuinely an ad every 10 minutes or less. a show that was an hour Twenty minutes took me two hours exactly due to ads"
- "lengthy unskippable ads shown on a premium plan is unacceptable, hulu and Paramount are the only two services that do this, and it's disgusting every time."
- "Always Ads. I pay for the service without ads. There are still ads for Hulu shows before the show I picked. So, why are there ads when I pay extra?"
Two separate reports there. The first is ad volume on the cheaper tier, which is a pricing question. The second is more specific and worth knowing before you upgrade: reviewers on the ad-free tier still describe promotional spots for Hulu's own content before playback, plus unskippable pre-roll on some titles. Ad-free removes advertiser breaks, not every interruption.
The volume complaints come with a second one attached. Multiple reviewers report that ad breaks are mixed louder than the programming:
- "For as expensive as Hulu is getting, you would think they could do something about the commercials playing 2x as loud as the shows."
- "volume between movies or shows and ads are wildly different and more ads more frequently than any other app."
Nothing on your phone fixes any of this. If ad load is your problem, the only lever is the tier you are on, and reviewers on the top tier say the lever is partial.
2. Playback That Fails Mid-Episode (9%)
The most common actual bug after the lockout, and the one that generates the shortest tempers because it interrupts something you already started.
- "keeps freezing up and saying 'error playing this video'. not worth $19 a month. I'm unsubscribing. if the app can't get through a 22 minute episode of a show without failing four or five times, it's trash."
- "the only app that puts up error codes out of nowhere with zero reasons why and no help to fix the error code. one day the app is working fine on my phone. next day. It won't play a large bulk of movie selections."
- "only works for a few minutes before it just stops playing... constantly having to restart the app."
- "the UI is abysmal, it barely works, will consistently crash when not doing anything, refuses to load shows, when it does finally load the show it messed up the aspect ratio and the visuals are lagging behind 3 seconds so it's just audio."
- "doesnt load anything for like 2 weeks now we get 3 rows of 4 shows on each row and thats it. the rest stay blank and then disappear, and were connected ti wifi so thats not the problem."
That last one describes a different failure than the others: the catalogue rows load empty rather than playback breaking. It shows up several times and it is worth separating, because it usually points at the app failing to fetch your personalized shelves rather than at a streaming problem.
A smaller but consistent sub-report is the video window collapsing on its own: "the video keeps minimizing while watching in full screen. It minimizes to a small screen, and then I have to make it big again, and then a few seconds later it minimizes again."
3. The Age Restriction Lockout (8%)
Only the third largest cluster by count, but the most severe by consequence, because it takes the app away completely from people who are being billed. Every one of these reviews is from this month, and all of them are on the 6.30.0 and 6.31.0 builds.
- "I keep getting an age restriction error, tried all settings and nothing seems to fix it. it seems there are many people dealing with this bug since the last update!! I'm not paying for the plan to not be able to use my account!"
- "It won't let me even try to select a profile after logging in. Just tells me that my access is restricted and a parent needs to verify with their google account... It's only my google account on the phone."
- "The app keeps asking for a parent to verify my age through my Google account which is IMPOSSIBLE because I am an adult."
- "I just updated the app on my tablet. can't even open it now. get an age restricted message and the only option is to retry or logout. logged into my account via browser and my birthday is right."
- "Hulu logged me out and is now giving me an age restriction when I don't have any children on my account and have never watched any Kids shows on Hulu."
- "BUG BUG BUG BUG remove the BUG restricting access for parental controls when they weren't set up to begin with"
- "not sure what the update was supposed to do, but now I can't log on to Hulu or disney+ due some age restrictions?"
Read them together and the shape is clear. The message points at the Google account rather than at Hulu's own parental controls, the account holders affected are adults, and the reviewer who checked their birthdate on the Hulu website found it correct. The last quote is the most diagnostic one in the set, because the same person reports it on Disney+ as well. That points at a shared age-signal check on the device rather than at anything inside your Hulu profile.
The practical problem is that the error screen offers two buttons, retry and log out, and log out is a trap: several reviewers could not get back in afterward.
4. Price Increases and Billing You Did Not Agree To (7%)
- "I was charged a rate I didn't agree to and no longer want a subscription from a company that doesn't honor the original account agreement"
- "All the price increases over the years and you can't make a better app?? The interface is absolutely horrendous."
- "I'm really lucky I used a programmatic credit card to subscribe to hulu. Their cancellation workflow broke for me."
- "No longer letting be share an account with my family. This is just cable again. also changing your email breaks your account"
The cancellation report is the one to act on rather than read past, and we come back to it at the end.
5. An Interface People Cannot Navigate (7%)
- "Hulu is the worst user interface ive ever experienced in a streaming service. not only is it confusing and difficult to find what you want to watch, trying to set a recording is like flipping a coin. sometimes it works, usually it has to be done several times. scheduled recordings of weekly shows sometimes wont record."
- "I'm watching a show, want a different episode, and have a list of other shows. why!!!!"
- "app is not capable of displaying account information. it tells me to go to a website to see the information, but is incapable of opening a web browser to access the link."
- "God forbid I ever hit 'series details' on the app it automatically closes and loses progress on the episode I was watching"
That last one is a crash with a UI trigger, and it is reproducible enough that two reviewers describe the same path.
6. Logged Out at Random (5%)
- "it does randomly sign me out like clockwork for no reason."
- "it won't let me sign in devices keeps telling me my account is inactive and I'm watching shows on my phone app wth"
- "It keeps telling me to go to my email to finish my setup and pick a plan despite already having a plan and it keeps sending me back to that screen that says to go to my email"
A forced logout is worse than usual on this app right now, because logging back in is where people meet the restriction screen in cluster 3.
7. Casting and Screen Mirroring (4%)
- "app is always buggy with casting. I have to 'force stop' the app every time I want to use the controls, then reopen it, just to get casting controls back."
- "app works on phone, but not to stream to TV. I don't have wifi, so I cast to my TV with all other apps. They put the new restrictions on due to piracy where you can no longer screen mirror... If you are in an area without wifi, do not purchase this subscription."
- "That I can watch Hulu on my phone while traveling, but not my TV in my RV one Chromecast is just wrong!"
The mirroring block is not a bug and will not be fixed. Hulu's content protection blocks screen mirroring, so the black screen you get when you mirror is the intended behaviour. Casting through the Cast button is the supported path, and it is the one people report as flaky rather than blocked.
8. Resume, Rewind, and Continue Watching (4%)
- "God help you if you fall asleep while watching, because when you go back it'll keep starting at the end of your shows."
- "it never remembers what episode im on and keeps removing stuff from my continue watching."
- "On any device (mostly firestick) if I hit the back button to rewind if I missed something, it will immediately put me back to where I was. cannot rewind in Hulu."
- "if I need to rewind a little after a commercial break...if I go one second past where the commercial break, it makes me watch 2 minutes of commercials AGAIN!"
Rewinding into a completed ad break replaying that break is the one to remember. It is not a bug, it is how ad insertion works on this app, and knowing it saves you two minutes every time you miss a line of dialogue.
What Actually Helps
Ordered by how many of the reports above each step addresses.
Step 1: If You See "Access Is Restricted"
Do not press log out. Several reviewers who did could not get back in.
Check your birthdate in two places, because the message implicates both. In your Hulu account on the web, confirm the date of birth on the profile you are trying to open. Then check the Google account signed in on that device, since the error text asks for verification there. If the device is shared with a child's Google profile, switch to your own before opening Hulu.
If both dates are right and the screen persists, that matches every report we read, and no setting fixed it for them. What did move the needle for some was clearing the app's storage and signing in again, which is a heavier step than clearing cache: Android Settings, Apps, Hulu, Storage, Clear storage. You will need your login afterward.
Step 2: For Playback Errors and Empty Rows
Clear cache first, then force stop, then reopen. Android Settings, Apps, Hulu, Storage, Clear cache. This is the step that most reliably restores the catalogue rows when they load blank, because those shelves are cached locally.
If playback still fails on one specific title, try another title before blaming your connection. Several reviewers describe a large bulk of titles failing while others play, which is a rights or delivery problem on Hulu's side rather than a network fault.
Step 3: For Casting
Use the Cast icon inside the Hulu app rather than mirroring your screen. Mirroring is blocked by design and returns a black screen with audio. If cast controls disappear, force stop Hulu and reopen it, which is the workaround reviewers converged on.
Step 4: For Ads
There is no in-app fix. Moving to the ad-free tier removes advertiser breaks, and reviewers on that tier still report promotional spots for Hulu content and unskippable pre-roll on some titles. Decide with that expectation rather than the marketing one.
Step 5: If You Are Cancelling
This is where the billing detail from the top matters. Hulu does not bill through Google Play, so cancelling is not the same as removing the app, and for many people it is not in the Play Store subscription list either. Where your subscription lives depends on how you signed up: through Hulu directly, through the App Store, or bundled with Disney+. Deleting the app stops nothing in any of those cases.
We wrote out the store-side steps and how to check whether a subscription you believe you ended is still active in how to cancel Hulu.
What This Is Not
Two things people blame that these reviews do not support.
It is not your internet. The empty-row and playback reports repeatedly come from people who confirm other apps stream fine on the same connection, and one notes downloads stuck on "waiting for wifi" while wifi is connected and working.
It is not your device being too old. That failure belongs to a different app: the compatibility lockout we documented in the Xfinity app. Hulu's lockout is an age check, and it is hitting current phones and tablets running the newest build.
The Verdict
Hulu is not down and Hulu is not a scam. What the recent reviews describe is a service where the biggest complaint has no fix and the biggest bug has no answer: the ad load on paid tiers is a pricing decision people cannot troubleshoot, and the age restriction lockout is a regression in this month's builds that is taking access away from adults who are being billed for it.
If you are locked out, the steps above are worth twenty minutes before you cancel, because the restriction screen has cleared for some people after a full storage reset. If your complaint is the ad volume, no amount of troubleshooting will change it, and the only honest advice is to price the ad-free tier against how much of each episode you are currently watching in commercials.
For current sentiment rather than our snapshot, read the newest 1-star reviews on the Hulu review page, check the code-computed trust summary at is Hulu legit, and compare the iOS complaints, where the restriction reports are lighter but the ad and playback clusters look the same.
