Amazon App Not Compatible on Tablets? 276 Reviews (2026)

By Unstar · Editorial Team

The Amazon app vanished from the Play Store for working tablets, and search now runs through Alexa with no off switch. We read 276 negative reviews.

If the Amazon Shopping app disappeared from your tablet and the Play Store now says your device is not compatible, the reviews point at an explanation you can check for yourself: the app almost certainly still runs on that device. Two reviewers installed it outside the Play Store and reported it working normally. What changed is the listing, not the hardware.

That is one of two changes that landed in the same fortnight. The other is that the search bar now answers through Alexa before it shows you products, and there is no setting to turn that off.

Both of those are app problems. Most of what people write in Amazon's app reviews is not.

On 6 August 2026 we pulled the 500 newest US reviews from each store, then swept nine more language storefronts for reports that do not surface in English. On Google Play, 316 of 500 were rated 1-3 stars, 259 of them one star, and 244 were long enough to categorise, spanning 1 to 6 August 2026. On the App Store, 32 substantive negatives came back for version 27.11.8, 29 of them dated 28 and 29 July. That is 276 categorised complaints in the US samples, plus a nine-language sweep on top.

What 36% of These Reviews Are Not About

Before any of the app findings, the honest part. 101 of the 276 reviews, 36.6%, describe Amazon the retailer and never touch the app: a package that arrived four days late, a seller who shipped the wrong thing, a refund that took a month, a support agent who could not help.

Overnight delivery and same day are a scam. 80% of the time nothing shows up. Don't use either, you won't get it overnight, it will still take 2 days... and I have a warehouse literally 10 minutes from my house

Those complaints are real and they are the single largest group in the set. They are also not defects in a piece of software, so we did not count them as any of the clusters below. Late delivery alone accounts for 58 reviews. Human support accounts for 23.

Strip those out and 175 reviews remain that describe the app itself. Two clusters dominate them.

The App Did Not Break on Your Tablet. It Was Delisted

17 of the 276 categorised reviews, 6.2%, say the app is no longer compatible with a device it worked on, and they appear on every single day of the sample window. The pattern inside them is consistent and it rules out the obvious explanation.

The most complete account belongs to a Galaxy Tab S11 Ultra owner who tested the thing everyone else assumed:

This isn't a compatibility issue, the app runs fine when installed by other means. It appears Amazon has simply chosen to block installation through the Google Play Store.

A second reviewer, independently, describes the same test and the route they used:

Doesn't work on tablets when previously it worked fine. A work-around is downloading the "APK Bundle" from apkmirror and installing it with apkmirror's app from here on the Play Store. Working as of now

The trap that makes this worse than a normal deprecation is that the app keeps working until you remove it. Uninstall to fix something else and you cannot put it back:

Very disappointed. I'm a regular Amazon customer and was using the Amazon Shopping app on this same phone until today. The app started crashing, so I uninstalled it to reinstall it. Now the Play Store says "Your device is not compatible." If it worked on this phone until today, what suddenly changed? All other shopping apps still work.

I reset my device, and now it says this app is no longer supported on this device. my tablet is 2 years old.I've had the app the whole time, until I reset it.

Two reviewers point out the part that is hard to explain away: it also hits Amazon's own hardware.

Are Fire tablets that poor? Stopping support on Android tablets except for Fire tablets is just a sad way to say you can't make them competitive.

I'm using my Amazon Kindle tablet. Its new. Are you saying you do not support your own brand? What the whut? Should I sell it back to you and buy an ipad?

And one reviewer gives the cleanest side by side, two Samsung tablets, one generation apart:

No longer available on the Play store for Samsung Galaxy Tab S11. It was installed and working on Tab S8+. Why? Many of us use tables to shop. Web browsing on a tablet is not optimal.

The Cutoff Is Hitting New Devices, in Six Languages

The single most useful thing our nine-storefront sweep produced is the evidence against the "your device is too old" reading. Across the full corpus, 42 reviews report the app as incompatible or no longer installable, and 21 of them come from six non-English storefronts. Several name hardware that is new.

An Italian reviewer supplies the detail that narrows it to this one app rather than the device:

A German reviewer puts the hardware question directly:

The non-US reviews also date the change earlier than the US ones do. The first of them lands on 21 July, a week and a half before the US wave.

What You Can Actually Do About the Device Cutoff

Nothing in these reviews suggests a settings fix, because there is nothing on the device to fix. What the corpus does contain is three responses that people report working, in descending order of how comfortable they are:

  • Do not uninstall it. If the app is still on the device, it keeps working. The failure happens at install time, not at run time. Every account of a permanent loss in this set begins with an uninstall, a factory reset, or a new device.
  • Use the mobile site. Several reviewers land here and none of them are happy about it, which is fair: "Shopping in a web browser is not a replacement for a native app". It does work.
  • Sideload. One reviewer reports installing the APK outside the Play Store and having it run normally. That is a real workaround and it is also the one with real risk attached, since you are trusting whoever hosts the file. We are reporting that it was done, not recommending it.

The one thing that reliably does not work is contacting support about it. The German reviewer quoted above made repeated enquiries to Amazon and got neither a fix nor a concrete answer, and no review in the corpus reports support resolving a compatibility block.

Search Now Runs Through Alexa, and There Is No Off Switch

41 of the 276 reviews, 14.9%, are about AI in the search bar. It is the largest app cluster in the set, it appears on every day of both sample windows, and the earliest reports are dated 28 July, which lines up with an iOS reviewer writing that it started that morning.

The complaint is remarkably uniform, and it is not "AI is bad". It is that a synchronous step was inserted in front of a search that used to be instant, and it cannot be skipped:

A recent change added "alexa for shopping" - when I enter a search term, it uses an LLM to drive the search results rather than what I want and expect, which is a simple text search of product listings. This is much slower, gives worse results, and does not allow me to opt out - I have to click "show search results" every time.

The newest update forces you to use their "Alexa" AI every time you want to use the search bar. this makes searches go from nearly instantaneous to upwards of 3-5 minutes and you MUST wait for "alexa" to finish "thinking" before you can press the "see search results" button and skip the AI "features".

Forced Alexa Ai searches. Its extremely annoying to be forced to an Ai search assistant that completely lags up the shopping I'm doing on the app. Amazon does not provide a way to turn this off so my searches take 4x longer with sometimes completely irrelevant results.

Eleven reviewers ask specifically for a toggle rather than removal, which is a milder request than the star ratings suggest:

The app used to be great. The introduction of 'Rufus' for "AI assistance" made it horrible. I want to be able to put in a product description and see results. I don't need a chat pop up constantly interrupting what should be a simple activity. It's true that many may find the bot useful... so give us a choice.

The sharpest version of the argument comes from a reviewer who reframes it as a physical shop:

Imagine a store where the employees refuse to leave you alone, stand in your way every time you try to look at a shelf, give incorrect information about every product, and completely ignore you when you ask them to give you space. That's Amazon now.

And one review makes the accessibility cost explicit, which is the part that is hardest to file under taste:

They have forced Alexa for shopping to open every time you search taking up fully 1/3 of the real estate on screen and for someone who's visually impaired this removes the ability to easily use Amazon.

Neither of these is documented by Amazon. Both come from reviewers who went looking.

The first is a search operator. One iOS reviewer reports that appending a token to the query suppresses the assistant:

I did find a workaround by adding -ai after each of my searches, but what a hassle.

The second is simply knowing the escape hatch exists, because it is not labelled as one:

Alexa "AI" search is now the default, and you can't bypass it. Searches start with Alexa, and while you wait (because it is SLOW) then you can click a 2nd link to just jump to the regular search.

That second one is worth internalising even if you never use the first. Most of the "searches take five minutes" complaints describe waiting for the assistant to finish. The link to plain results is available before it does.

Amazon Also Limited How Many Reviews You Can Read

A smaller cluster, 5 reviews, but it is the one we have the least sympathy for, and it is showing up alongside the AI change rather than separately.

On the most recent update, they've limited the amount of reviews you can see. I can't sort by rating or date anymore. I have to submit a request & wait "up to" 5 business days for an email for thorough research.

This app decided to not let me see all the reviews anymore. I'm not allowed to see bad reviews. Only 5 star reviews. Fine I'll just buy it on Walmart plus then. So predatory.

Making me, the customer, request to see reviews and I have to wait 5 days when I want to buy the product now. How about nevermind.

I hate the new Alexa A.I. thing and "limited reviews" option! I read reviews before I purchase items, and now I can't even click on the different stars to read bad reviews, or scroll through all of them to see what people really think.

We should declare the obvious interest here: reading negative reviews is what this site is for. Setting that aside, a five business day wait to read what other buyers said about a product you want today is a purchase you will make somewhere else, and two of these five reviewers say exactly that.

One reviewer reports the restriction behaving differently by country, which suggests it is being rolled out rather than shipped everywhere at once:

American version has had AI horribly integrated which interferes with searching. Canadian version has had many results restricted.

Filters Can Freeze the Results You Just Filtered

Small cluster, precise bug, and it has a workaround. 3 reviews, but they are on both platforms and they describe the same sequence: apply a filter, then nothing in the result list responds to taps.

filter doesn't work. I am trying to find a size and it's a pain in the butt! every time I click on something I like it's ALL SOLD OUT OF THE SIZE! I filter it to the size I need & there's a bug that happens where I can't click on a damn thing! so I can't browse ANYTHING with the filter on!

if I use any filters to a search, then app won't let me click on anything..... can't add to cart and buy if can't click on anything

The iOS version of this review is the one that tells you how to get out of it:

It seems to freeze intermittently and only unfreezes if I click in the search term bar and press enter again then re-filter.

Sign-In, Passkeys, and the Under-13 Lockout

19 reviews, 6.9%, cover account access. Most are ordinary password reset loops, but three are unusual enough to record.

The app spontaneously opted me into passkeys without my consent. And then took lots of searching and multiple tries, including a dozen passkey pop-ups, to turn them back off.

I AM OVER THE AGE OF 13! I'M 25! I have to uninstall and reinstall the app to see anything, but as soon as I close it, when I get back on it says "Age Restricted Users under 13 cannot use this app" what the hell am I supposed to do

doesn't let me log into the app. I can log into the website just fine but not the app so I deleted the app

That last shape, the website accepting credentials the app refuses, shows up in this set and in a lot of others. It is the fastest thing to test when an app tells you your password is wrong.

Payment: the App Picks the Card Before You Do

11 reviews, 4.0%. The recurring shape is that the checkout commits faster than the interface lets you correct it.

It doesnt let you chose which card you want to use to pay with at checkout, nor does it allow you to review what or who it will charge at the checkout. So when you proceed with the order and expect to be able to enter your details, it just defaults to whichever card it wants to use thats saved on your account.

get rid of that tap the physical card to verify payment! i don't have my card in hand digital wallets are on the phones for a reason! cancelled so many orders because of this!

Portuguese

Fui no reclame aqui e não me responderam ainda.

Ads and Notifications That Ignore Their Own Settings

8 reviews, 2.9%. The complaint that stands out is not the volume of sponsored placement but where it now appears.

Placing ads on the My Orders screen while we are paying for Prime. That's just wrong.

That Italian one is the version worth fixing first. A notification toggle that does not stop notifications is not a preference, it is a bug.

What Amazon Would Have to Change

Four things, and none of them require a new feature.

  • An opt-out for AI search. Eleven reviewers asked for the toggle by name. The escape link already exists, so the plumbing for a plain search is there.
  • A stated reason for the device cutoff. Reviewers who cannot install are not being told why, and the sideload reports make "your device cannot run it" hard to sustain. A version floor published in the listing would end most of these reviews.
  • Review access restored, or at least explained. A five business day queue to read reviews is not a rate limit anyone will wait out.
  • A card confirmation step before the order commits. The one place the app is fast is the place people want it slow.

What Is Not the App's Fault

Worth repeating, because it is the majority of what you will read in the store. Late deliveries, marketplace product quality, refund timelines, and the difficulty of reaching a human are business and logistics decisions, and they dominate Amazon's negative reviews on both stores. They are not evidence that the software is broken, and treating them as such is how you end up with a review average that tells you nothing about whether the app works.

The two changes at the top of this article are different in kind. They are things the app started doing in the last three weeks that it did not do before, and both are reversible with a setting.

How We Read These Reviews

We pull the newest reviews rather than the most helpful, because helpfulness sorting favours old complaints that may already be fixed. We keep 1-3 star reviews with at least 80 characters, since one-line ratings carry no diagnosis. We categorise by what actually failed, not by the star rating, and we separate complaints about the company from complaints about the software. Every quote in this article was verified as an exact substring of the source review before publication. Where a review is not in English, we assign the language by reading the text rather than trusting the store's language bucket, which is frequently wrong.

The multi-locale sweep is the part that changed our conclusions here. Nine additional language storefronts turned a US tablet story into a global one, and the newest hardware in the whole corpus, a 2026 Honor tablet running the current MagicOS, came from the Italian store.

Check Any App Yourself

You can run this same breakdown on any app on the App Store or Google Play. Unstar.app shows negative review clusters, word clouds, and rating trends, free for basic analysis.

Start with the two Amazon listings side by side, since the ratings differ by nearly half a star: Amazon Shopping on Google Play and Amazon Shopping on the App Store. If you are weighing whether to keep paying for Prime while the app is off your tablet, the Amazon cancellation and refund guide covers how store billing actually works. There is also a trust check for Amazon Shopping and a list of apps like Amazon Shopping if the tablet cutoff has you looking.

For the wider category, our e-commerce app review analysis covers what shoppers complain about across Amazon, Shein, Temu, eBay and Walmart.

Methodology: All apps and review counts referenced are pulled live from App Store and Google Play APIs. Rankings update weekly. Specific reviews are direct user quotes (1-3 stars) with names masked. If you spot an error, email us.
