CapCut Locked It Behind Pro: 900 Reviews (2026)
CapCut holds 3.57 stars from 13,018,036 Google Play ratings, and 38.4% of every rating it has ever collected is 1 to 3 stars. We read 2,881 substantial negative reviews from a continuous 56 day window and 900 of them name Pro, premium, a paywall or a subscription. 70 describe an export that was refused at the last step, and the share has not moved in three months.
CapCut holds 3.57 stars from 13,018,036 Google Play ratings and sits on more than a billion installs. That average is unusual for an app this large, and the histogram explains why: 3,477,128 of those ratings are a single star, and 5,004,710 of them, 38.4% of everything the store has collected, are 1 to 3 stars.
We pulled the 14,000 most recent US Google Play reviews, a continuous run from 21 July to 14 September 2026: 56 days, no gap in the daily counts, between 177 and 322 reviews a day. 6,018 of them were 1 to 3 stars. 2,881 of the negatives were substantial (80 characters or more), and 71.6% of those were 1-star.
900 of the 2,881 mention Pro, premium, a paywall or a subscription. That is 31.2% of every substantial complaint in the window, and 652 of the 900, 72.4%, are 1-star. We read a random sample of 20 of the 900 to check for false matches and found none.
they now charge 20 for pro and 10 for an acclaimed "standard version" pretty greedy for a not so good editing software. almost giving me the itch to go to DaVinci or Adobe 🤡 standard should be free as it was, you increased the price for the sake of this app being convenient. greedy.
Used to be amazing. You can barely use anything. Practically everything is pro. You use a effect or transition a few times and then next you know it's pro.
What the 900 Are Actually About
The 900 are not one complaint. They are several, and they overlap. Here is how they break down, counted with narrow phrase rules rather than by eye:
| What the review says | Count | Share of the 900 |
|---|---|---|
| A feature is locked behind Pro | 234 | 26.0% |
| Something that used to be free now costs money | 68 | 7.6% |
| The export was blocked | 70 | 7.8% |
| Ads are part of the problem too | 97 | 10.8% |
| The watermark | 54 | 6.0% |
| A charge, refund or auto-renewal | 40 | 4.4% |
| Templates | 37 | 4.1% |
| Being a student, or not affording it | 39 | 4.3% |
| Names a different editor they moved to | 22 | 2.4% |
The counts add up to more than 900 because most reviews carry two or three of these at once. The rules are deliberately narrow, so each number is a floor rather than an estimate. A reviewer who writes "everything costs now" without using the word free is not in the 68.
Which Features People Name
The complaint is not abstract. Reviewers name the specific thing that stopped working for free, and the same items come back.
I can't edit peacefully because everything is pro and it pissed me off so bad. First, "swing bottom" and "swing right" animations are pro. Then the slowmo went from capcut standard to capcut pro suddenly. Same goes to "oblique blur" video effect.
Used to love this app, but nowadays corporate greed took over and 95% of animations are locked behind a paywall, including basic ones like fade out, like wdym buy standard just to have the most common animation out there?
I have some experience with CapCut for over 5 years. Since the subscription came in, the app went down. I understand that the developers need money from something, but putting the most basic features such as sound extracting behind a paywall is straight up rude.
Slow motion, animations such as fade and swing, audio extraction, filters and effects, 1080p export, and the removal of the watermark. Those are the items that appear by name most often. 54 of the 900 raise the watermark on its own terms, and the framing is consistent: it is not that a watermark exists, it is that removing it is now a paid feature rather than a default.
There's been a trend recently where fundamental things like adding music to a video or removing a watermark are part of a "standard" package that you have to pay for. If you want to charge someone for something, please make sure it is actually a perk, not a basic function that essentially forces people into a corner.
The app has crashed, everything is paid, even the regular effect or transition. You have to pay for everything. It would be fine if it were cheap, but it is expensive. There's also a bold "capcut" sign on the entire screen that can only be removed with a subscription.
The Export Wall
70 of the 900 describe the same specific failure, and it is the one worth understanding before you start an edit. The app lets you place a Pro element in the timeline, lets you keep editing for as long as you like, and only refuses at export.
this app used to use very little ai, and it definitely was less greedy. to do something as simple as put a decent filter over your video requires paying. I open the app and I'm BOMBARDED with ads begging me to use their ai system. Not only that, but if I apply a premium feature and get rid of it after, it won't let me export the video because it still thinks I have the premium feature on.
That review carries 4,603 helpful votes, the most of any negative review in our window, and it contains two separate claims. One is the paywall. The other is a bug: that removing the premium element afterwards does not always clear the block. We cannot verify the second, and neither can the reviewer. What we can say is that it is not a lone report.
this app was really great for editing but suddenly they decided to give us editors a tough time. I mean i have been editing a video for 5 hours and the moment I was finished and tried exporting, it wasn't exporting due to use of premium
A scam wrapped in technicalities! You can pay for "standard" tier but while editing you can't tell if the effects are standard OR pro (hint: most are in pro) because they are intertwined
The second reviewer is describing the part that makes this expensive in time rather than money. Reviewers describe two paid tiers whose elements sit mixed together in the same menus, which means a Standard subscriber can build an entire project out of what looks like their tier and still be stopped at the end.
The Number That Is Not Moving
We expected a spike. There is not one. Here is the Pro share of substantial negatives, month by month:
| Month | Pro complaints | All substantial negatives | Share |
|---|---|---|---|
| July 21 to 31 | 163 | 548 | 29.7% |
| August 2026 | 522 | 1,621 | 32.2% |
| September 1 to 14 | 215 | 712 | 30.2% |
Three points, all within two and a half points of each other. This is not a regression that landed in one release. It is the steady state of the app in the second half of 2026: roughly three in every ten written complaints are about what costs money, every month, at a volume of 14,000 US Play Store reviews every eight weeks.
The version tags say the same thing. The 900 carry 65 different build numbers, with 18.9.0 the largest single group at 98 reports (10.9%) and 271 (30.1%) carrying no version at all. No build owns this. A Google Play version tag is the build the reviewer had installed when they wrote, not the build that changed anything, so it can only ever understate how many releases are involved. Here it does not even hint at one.
What the Reviews Say It Costs
27 of the 2,881 quote a price in dollars. That is a small number and we are reporting it as reviewer testimony, not as CapCut's price list, which varies by country, tier and billing period. The two figures that come up most often are 20 dollars (8 reviews) and 10 dollars (3), which match what the most-voted review in our corpus describes as two tiers. Larger annual-sounding numbers appear as well: 180, 100 and 30 dollars each show up twice. Reviewers writing in other currencies quote figures in euros, reais, zloty and koruna that are not comparable to each other or to the dollar tiers.
Check the price in your own store listing before you subscribe. Nothing in this article is a quote for what you will be charged.
How to Find the Pro Element That Is Blocking Your Export
Nothing below is an official fix, and we cannot verify that any of it works for you. These are the steps this corpus reports, ordered from cheapest to most disruptive, and they exist because 70 people wrote to say they finished an edit they could not save.
Step 1: Check before you build, not after
Open a throwaway project and apply the one effect your edit depends on, then try to export a two second clip. If it exports, the effect is in your tier. This costs a minute and it is the only step in this list that happens before you lose work.
Step 2: Read the export dialog, not the timeline
Reviewers repeatedly say they could not tell which element triggered the block. The export prompt is where the app names what it wants payment for. If it names a feature, that is the one to remove, and it is more reliable than scanning your own timeline for a badge.
Step 3: Remove the element, then close and reopen the project
Several reviewers report that deleting the Pro element did not lift the block on the first try. One of them, the most-voted negative review in our window, says the app "still thinks I have the premium feature on". Closing the project and reopening it before exporting again is the cheapest thing to try next.
Step 4: Rebuild the effect out of free parts
One reviewer in this corpus says outright that the paid element they used does the exact same thing as a free one, and could not find it again afterwards. Slow motion, fades and basic transitions usually have a free equivalent in the same menu, one or two rows away. Swapping it is faster than paying and faster than starting over.
Step 5: Export at a lower resolution
28 of the 2,881 tie 1080p or 4K export directly to a payment prompt, and several say the resolution itself is what they are being asked to buy. If your export is refused with no element named, drop the resolution one step and try again. This is a workaround, not a fix, and it costs you the quality.
Step 6: If you already paid and it still blocks you
40 of the 900 describe a charge, an auto-renewal or a refund attempt. If you subscribed and the export is still refused, the reviewers who got anywhere say they went through the store rather than the app.
This had has been getting scummier since I last used it. Including today, I have experienced 2 unauthorized charges to renew my subscription even though this time I have already ensured I turned on second verification for me to either confirm or cancel any sudden charges, yet this APP bypassed that.
You can request a refund for a Google Play subscription from the Play Store itself, and cancel from the same place, which is a separate control from anything inside CapCut. We walk through the exact sequence on our cancellation guide for CapCut.
Not Only in English
We swept 30 country and language buckets on Google Play and collected 9,605 unique reviews, of which 2,180 were substantial negatives. Five buckets returned nothing at all: Portugal duplicated Brazil, Egypt duplicated Saudi Arabia, Mexico and Argentina duplicated Spain, and the Philippines duplicated the US. A sixth, the UK, returned 5 reviews we had not seen and not one substantial negative among them. That is the rule we keep confirming: a language, not a country, is what makes a review new.
2,108 of the substantial negatives were outside the English buckets. 720 of them use a paid-tier word in their own language, 485 of those posted since 1 June 2026. We did not classify all 720. We read a sample across the largest language buckets and they describe the same two things: features that moved, and an export that stopped.
GermanNee also jetzt mal wirklich.
Read the Japanese one against the English export reviews. It describes ten hours of editing, a Standard subscription, an auto-generated caption feature that turned out to need the higher tier, no warning at the point the feature was applied, and an upgrade prompt at export. The Czech and Spanish reviewers describe the same sequence in one sentence each. The Dutch reviewer was editing a school group project.
The Polish reviewer adds something the English corpus cannot: their review is two reviews. The original said the one remaining upside was that there was no watermark. The edit, appended two years later, says the watermark arrived.
Two Claims We Are Not Making
That CapCut moved a specific feature on a specific date. The 900 carry 65 build numbers and show no month-to-month movement. Reviews can tell you what people hit. They cannot tell you when a flag was flipped, and in this corpus they do not even cluster enough to guess.
That the export block is a bug. The most-voted review says removing a premium element does not always clear it. Others describe the same thing. We have no way to separate a real defect from a project that still contains an element the reviewer forgot, and neither group can see the app's internal state.
What This Does Not Show
Negative reviews are self-selected. Of the 14,000 reviews we pulled, 7,982 were 4 or 5 stars. The 31.2% figure is a share of complaints, not a share of users. Plenty of people pay for this app and are happy.
We cannot verify a single outcome. We cannot confirm that any reviewer was charged, that any export was refused, or that any feature was free last year and is not now.
This is Android only. The iOS listing holds 4.61 stars from 1,120,820 ratings on version 19.4.0, a full star above the Play Store average, and this article says nothing about how the app behaves or prices there.
The window ends on 14 September 2026. September is 14 days, not a month, and its 30.2% is built on 712 substantial negatives.
Prices change. Every figure in the pricing section came out of a review, and reviews go stale faster than price pages do.
