Pinterest AI Filter Not Working: 63 Reviews (2026)

By Unstar · Editorial Team

Pinterest gives you a setting for AI content. We read 2,076 substantial negative Google Play reviews from a continuous 82 day window, found 465 about AI in the feed, and hand-read the 85 that mention the setting. 63 survived: 47 say the control is on and the content still arrives, 11 say there is no control, 5 say the new AI tips feature has no opt-out.

Pinterest has a setting for this. That is what makes the complaint worth counting rather than dismissing as taste.

Pinterest holds 4.27 stars from 11,631,678 Google Play ratings and sits on more than a billion installs. We pulled the 14,000 most recent US Google Play reviews, a continuous run from 25 June to 14 September 2026: 82 days, no gap in the daily counts, between 118 and 220 reviews a day. 3,374 were 1 to 3 stars. 2,076 of the negatives were substantial (80 characters or more), and 60.5% of those were 1-star.

465 of those 2,076 are about AI content in the feed, 22.4% of every substantial complaint. That number is the background. The number this article is about is 63: reviewers who are not complaining that AI exists, but that the control Pinterest gives them for it does not do what they expected.

Too many adds recently and the worst is that there's too much Ai content, they don't know how to manage it. There's options to turn off AI posts but it doesn't work they always appear on my feed even if I have them all turned off.

it's good for references for drawing but it's so littered with ads and AI that's its horrible. I hate it. the settings to turn off AI does nothing, and the ads are horrendous and won't go away no matter what I do.

How We Got to 63

We matched the 465 on the capitalised token AI with word boundaries, on A.I., and on the phrases ai generated, ai slop, artificial intelligence and genai. Case sensitivity matters here: a lowercase two-letter search on this corpus picks up "said", "again" and "paid" and would have inflated the cluster by hundreds of reviews.

Inside the 465 we then matched a second, looser rule for settings language: turned off, toggle, opt out, unchecked, filter out, see less, hide, and the same words alongside still, anyway, even though and does nothing. That produced 85 candidates. We read all 85 by hand and kept 63.

The 22 we threw out are worth listing, because they are what a regex cannot see. Three of them say the setting works ("you can turn off the AI for the most part, so I don't have a complaint there"). Six are about hiding ads, not AI. Four are about AI moderation taking pins down. The rest matched on a stray phrase and are about something else entirely.

40 of the 63, 63.5%, are 1-star.

What the Control Is Called

Three different names for it turn up across these reviews, and we cannot tell from the outside whether they are three settings or one setting renamed: a "See less AI" option, a GenAI checkbox in preferences, and per-topic AI interest toggles.

The amount of ads and AI and ads FOR AI is disgusting. I got used to having 4-6 ads in between posts, but today I got 26 consecutive ads before getting any actual feed again. I'm disappointed in not only the reality of barely being able to use the app anymore for what I need, but I'm disappointed in the way they pretend to provide solutions. They have settings to "turn on and off AI" according to topic/ interest, but it doesn't do anything. I still get AI slop all over my feed.

Most of the posts are now either ads or AI slop. Despite unchecking the "GenAI" options, there's still way too much AI stuff recommended.

There's been a lot of changes, some like the ability to change if you see the oldest or newest saved pins, are real great. But the "See less AI" (something like that) option still doesn't do much.

I hate the new update that slaps AI-Generated images everywhere. Even if you toggle the option to hide them, they still show up everywhere.

One reviewer is more precise than the rest, and their claim is the one we would most like to be able to test:

Ads are out of control. Way too many and there is now video ads that override your preference to not auto play videos. Also the update for the pin notes is great but just put a little icon for it, I don't need the whole text bar over every image. It makes the page jump a bit, just not a smooth experience. Last issue is the AI content. at one point we could filter out a lot of it by adjusting our settings and now we still have to see that too regardless of what our preferences are.

That is a claim that the filter used to do more than it does now. Nobody else in the corpus dates it, and we cannot verify it.

The Reviewers Who Followed the Instructions

The pattern inside the 47 is consistent enough to be worth stating plainly: these are not people who never opened settings. They say they opened them, turned everything off, and describe the result.

I'm leaving this review to let Pinterest know... if someone is turning off all AI suggestions in the settings, that means they don't want any AI. all of my settings for the AI content were turned off and I still got AI modified content. I am not happy with that.

more ads than posts and every time I show interest in anything it's my whole Pinterest for months; despite having options to turn off ai MOST OF MY PINS ARE AI WITH ALL OF IT OFF

Pinterest fell off. It's 85% ads now, and the overflow of AI is making it so exhausting to look at. It's become more about profit and less about finding inspiration. On top of that, I explicitely selected, "see less AI," and it went ahead and FLOODED my feed w/ AI 🫩 are the devs studpid or what...and I've since also gotten an increase in random posts in other languages even though I've never i teracted with any pins that match their aesthetic / content.

This app is completely unusable now. It barely loads a few pictures on the main page, and the photo search is extremely glitchy. Even though I disabled AI-generated posts in settings, they still show up in my feed.

works worse and worse everyday. 90% of posts shown to the user are ads. posts that are shown to the user that aren't ads are a 50/50 tossup on being AI generated or not, even if you have the setting to show less/no AI content turned on.

One adds a detail nobody else reports, about the label rather than the filter:

not only are we supposed to tolerate ads and a lot of them and even the one that doesn't interest us, but now I have to click twice on the picture to see the "modified by AI" tag! why not show it from the first time!! please fix this problem because I've turn all AI content off and I still get them and now they are hidden too

And one reports the opposite failure, a label that is applied and then not acted on:

I've had Pinterest for years and I love the app and it helps to much for finding inspiration. but recently the app has become FLOODED with AI and it's one of the most frustrating things ever to try find something and all that shows up is a bunch of AI slop. I have turned off all the AI stuff in my settings but it is completely useless.

The 11 Who Say There Is No Control

This group matters because it is evidence about discoverability rather than about the filter. These reviewers are asking for a feature that other reviewers in the same corpus describe using.

the amount of AI has gotten to be to much and there's no way to turn that option off

an absolutely terrible app. shoves ai slop into your face and even uses the real artists' pieces as a reference for their ai generated images. there's no option or button to use to keep ai away from the pins recommended to you.

We cannot tell whether these people had an older build, a different region, or simply never found the setting. What we can say is that in a corpus of 2,076 complaints, 11 people asked for a control that 47 other people say they have already used.

The 5 About AI Tips

The smallest group is the newest complaint, and the only one in this article that is about a specific feature rather than the feed.

We have the ability to hide AI when it comes to actual posted content, but now there's a freaking "AI tip" on half the non-AI posts. I. Don't. Want. AI. At. All. If I can opt out of seeing posts that contain AI, I should also be able to opt out of see AI tips on posts that don't have any AI originally.

There is a concerning issue with this new feature, the lack of an on/off toggle for AI tips feels overlooked and should be considered. I do not want to see AI, that is why I turned off AI modified images and AI training, if this issue is not addressed I will be deactivating my account on this platform.

Five reviews is not a trend. We are including it because both reviewers make the same structural point, which is the point of this whole article: an opt-out that covers one surface and not the next one is experienced as no opt-out.

It Is Not a Spike

We went in expecting a launch to blame. There is not one. Here is the wider AI share of substantial negatives, month by month:

MonthAI complaintsAll substantial negativesShare
June 25 to 302510224.5%
July 202614370720.2%
August 202620887423.8%
September 1 to 148939322.6%

Four points inside a four-point band. The 63 spread the same way: 4 in the six days of June we cover, 17 in July, 27 in August, 15 in the first two weeks of September.

The version tags agree. The 465 carry 48 different build numbers, the largest single group is 14.32.0 with 50 reports (10.8%), and 79 (17.0%) carry no version at all. No release owns this. A Play Store version tag records the build the reviewer had installed when they wrote, not the build that changed anything, so it can only understate how many releases are involved. Here it does not point at one at all.

Why This Sits Inside a Bigger Complaint

The single largest theme in the corpus is not AI. It is advertising: 955 of the 2,076 substantial negatives, 46.0%, mention ads. And the two are not independent. 298 of the 465 AI reviews mention ads as well, so roughly two thirds of the people complaining about generated content are complaining about it inside an ad load they also object to. Only 167 of the 465 raise AI without mentioning ads at all.

I've used this app for many years now and all of a sudden there is a slew of absolutely disgusting AI ads.

Deleted the app because of the ads. Some of the ads I saw were sexual, and the report button never works. The ratio of ads to pins is also terrible, and the app glitches all the time. A lot of pins are also AI generated and not marked correctly.

That matters for reading the 63 fairly. A filter that worked perfectly would not fix the thing most of these reviewers are describing. It would fix the half of it they were told they could control.

What People Say They Lost

The 465 are not an abstract argument about technology. Reviewers name the use case that stopped working for them.

Recipes. 24 reviews say they no longer trust a recipe pin. It is a small count and the most concrete one in the corpus, because a fabricated recipe fails in a kitchen rather than on a screen.

No one asked for the download button to be moved. Also, too many ads and AI. Hard to trust any recipes now which is my main use for pinterest.

Art and reference. 39 mention art or artists, several of them describing the app as a reference library they now have to sort by hand.

Knowing what is real. 23 say outright that they can no longer tell. That is the cost the "just scroll past it" answer does not cover: the work moved onto the viewer.

Only 5 of the 465 use the words labeled, marked, tagged or declared. We expected that to be higher and it is not, so we are reporting it as it came out rather than building an argument on it. In the English corpus the complaint is about filters and volume, not about disclosure.

The Other Side of the Same Machine

28 of the 465 are the mirror image: not AI arriving, but AI removing. These reviewers describe pins taken down, boards deleted, or accounts deactivated by what they believe is an automated system, with no human to appeal to.

Nothing but ads and AI slop. You can't filter out either, even if they say you can. Also their AI moderation flags everything as a violation of their community guidelines, even though it isn't.

After 14 years with this same account Pinterest deactivated my account due to "spamming." I never create pins or leave comments. I only save pins to my boards. I probably had thousands of pins. I don't have a clue how I could have had spam on my account. I guess their little AI bots do all their work for them now.

We cannot verify any of it, and a platform this size will always have people who were correctly moderated and disagree. What is notable is only that the same reviewers who say the feed is machine-generated say the enforcement is too.

Not Only in English

We swept 30 country and language buckets on Google Play and collected 9,600 unique reviews, 1,258 of them substantial negatives. Six buckets returned nothing we had not already seen: the UK and the Philippines duplicated the US, Portugal duplicated Brazil, Egypt duplicated Saudi Arabia, and Mexico and Argentina duplicated Spain. A language, not a country, is what makes a review new.

1,187 of the substantial negatives sat outside the English buckets. 168 of them use an AI word in their own language, spread across 20 buckets, 133 of those posted since 1 June 2026. This sweep reaches further back than the US window, to December 2023, so treat it as evidence of spread rather than of timing.

The two most useful ones are about the control, not the content:

The Russian reviewer says the "see less AI posts" button was removed, and wrote it on 30 July. English reviewers in August and September are still describing a control that is there and does not work. Both can be true if the control moved or was renamed, and neither reviewer can see which. The Portuguese reviewer states the same failure as the 47, in six words in brackets.

Czech

tahle aplikace uz neni to, co to byvalo. Bohužel v poslední době se tam vyskytovalo více AI a ještě více reklam, což bych BYLA ochotna i tolerovat, pokud by tahle zatracená aplikace fungovala pořádně.

The French reviewer describes something none of the English reviews do: turning every AI setting off and finding the feed broken afterwards, then creating a second account and getting the same recommendations. The German and Italian reviewers both add the disclosure point the English corpus mostly leaves out, and both put it in a subordinate clause as though it were obvious: advertising and AI, and the AI not marked as such.

Not every bucket carried this. The Turkish bucket returned only 7 matching reviews in the whole sweep and none was a clean fit, so we left Turkish out rather than stretch for a quote.

Three Claims We Are Not Making

That the filter does not work. 63 people report that it did not do what they expected. That is testimony, not a test. We did not sit with the app and count pins before and after a toggle, and nobody in this corpus did either. A setting can also work exactly as designed and still disappoint someone who read it as "none" when it meant "less".

That a specific share of Pinterest's feed is AI-generated. We counted reviews, not pins. 465 people saying the feed is full of generated images tells you what users perceive, and perception is what makes them leave, but it is not a measurement of the index.

That this is new. The monthly shares are flat across our whole window and the international sweep carries the same complaint back further. If something changed, it changed before 25 June 2026.

What This Does Not Show

Negative reviews are self-selected. Of the 14,000 reviews we pulled, 10,626 were 4 or 5 stars. 63 is a count of complaints, not a rate among users, and against a billion installs it is a rounding error in absolute terms. What makes it worth reading is what those 63 have in common, not how many there are.

We cannot verify a single outcome. We cannot confirm that any pin was generated, that any toggle was on, or that any account was deactivated by an automated system.

This is Android only. The iOS listing holds 4.78 stars from 5,768,103 ratings on version 14.35, half a star above the Play Store average, and this article says nothing about the feed there.

The window ends on 14 September 2026. September is 14 days, not a month.
