Grubhub Won't Refund? The $5 Credit: 292 Reviews (2026)

By Unstar ยท Editorial Team

Grubhub scores 4.54 on Google Play and 4.75 on iOS. 292 recent 1-3 star reviews explain the $5 credit, the refund that is not a refund, and one Android regression.

We pulled the most recent US Google Play reviews for Grubhub on 3 August 2026, plus the current US App Store feed. In the cleanest single pass, 344 of the 500 newest Play reviews were rated 1-3 stars: 267 one-star, 45 two-star, 32 three-star. After deduplication, 271 Android reviews carried enough text to categorise, spanning 6 June to 2 August 2026. On iOS, 31 of the most recent reviews were negative and 21 had enough substance to use. Total categorised set: 292 reviews.

At that moment the Android app held 4.54 stars from 984,983 ratings with 10,000,000+ installs on build 2026.30, and the iOS app held 4.75 stars from 4,636,078 ratings.

Hold those two facts next to each other, because the tension between them is the point of this article. The lifetime store rating is fine. The most recent written reviews are not. Roughly seven in ten of the newest Play reviews are negative, and the complaints are not scattered. They converge on one number.

Quick Answer

The largest cluster is late, cold, or never-delivered orders: 83 of 292 reviews, 28%. That is unremarkable for a delivery app. What is remarkable is the second cluster, and it is the reason this article exists: 36 reviews describe the compensation, and the number that keeps appearing is $5. Not $5 as a proportion of the order. $5 on a $35 order, $5 on a $50 order, $7 on a $46 order, $5 on a $150 order missing half its items.

Then: 38 reviews about dark mode disappearing from the Android app, 30 about menu markups and fees, 19 about accessibility, 19 about food stolen or delivered to the wrong address, 19 about payment errors at checkout, 18 about refunds refused outright, and 16 about the AI support agent.

The finding, stated plainly: Grubhub's failure rate is ordinary for the category. Its remedy is not. The complaint that separates it from DoorDash and Uber Eats in these reviews is not that things go wrong. It is what you get back when they do.

How the Numbers Were Counted

Two methodology notes, because the headline percentages are easy to misread.

First, a store average and a review feed are different populations. Google Play's 4.54 includes a million star-only ratings from people who tapped four stars and moved on. The feed we read contains only reviews someone sat down and typed. Seven in ten recent written reviews being negative does not mean seven in ten Grubhub orders fail. It means the people who write are the people something happened to.

Second, counts are mentions, not exclusive buckets. Most of these reviews contain three complaints at once, usually late plus cold plus the credit. We excluded reviews written by delivery drivers about pay and zones, since that is a different product, and we excluded complaints about a specific restaurant's cooking.

The $5 Credit

This is the through-line of the entire set, and the reviews document it with a consistency that is genuinely unusual. Reviewers report the same remedy at wildly different order values.

horrible app. if you place an order even if you wait over an hour and no one will get your order they will not refund you at all and they wont escalate past a typical representative. They will only offer a 5 dollar credit on a 35+ order.

everything is way overpriced. then when you get your food, the delivery people have made 3 or 4 stops before they give your food to you, making it cold. when you ask for a refund on your 50 dollar order they offer you a $5 discount coupon so they can make more money delivering cold food to you.

they will only give you $5 'credit' even if you $150 order is missing over half the food.

I wasted $46 on cold pizza from a shop 5 minutes away. Grub Hub refused to replace it! They offered me a $7 credit towards future orders but no refund! I told them keep the $7.

worst take out delivery of all companies in circulation right now. if you spend money on a order more than 10 dollars, and it arrives cold, they will only give you a max refund of 10 dollars. I lost 20 dollars because they refused to give me a full refund and instead give me 10 dollar credit.

I had ordered $100 dollars in sushi both times, that's not an easy mix up. These recurring errors are unacceptable. A refund is not enough. A $7 credit is not enough to make up for multiple issues.

Several reviewers describe the credit arriving reflexively, before anyone has established what went wrong:

Usually a good experience and they're good with giving $5 credit even if food is a minute late. However during dead times you can wait hours for food or not even get it.

They have repeatedly provided a $5 credit, but I'd rather get my order timely.

1.5 hrs later I get cold food and 5 dollars on my next order that I will NOT be using.

There is a genuine business logic here and it is worth saying out loud: a flat goodwill credit is cheap to administer, it avoids case-by-case adjudication, and for a $12 order it is generous. The problem is that it does not scale with the order, and delivery failures are not distributed evenly across order sizes. The bigger the order, the more people it was feeding, the worse the ratio gets.

A Credit Is Not a Refund

The second half of the cluster is the part reviewers seem least prepared for. When Grubhub does agree the order failed, the money frequently comes back as in-app credit rather than to the card that paid.

Absolutely the worst. Food was not delivered. Grubhub gave me a credit that I have to use within 90 days instead of a refund. Unbelievable.

customer service sucks, they wont cancel an order even if its been sitting for hours. If you can finally get them to cancel they wont refund you instead they give you it back in a credit. that credit is only good for 90 days.

reached out to customer service who offered credits. I accepted it and then she went ahead and canceled the order without checking with me. to add insult to injury, they refused to refund to my original payment method and give me credits that expire.

They missed a delivery and then refunded the order back to GrubHub, to which we ordered another day using the credits that were refunded for previous order, and then they didn't deliver that order also to the correct address, so we went for refund to which they say we can't help you with that.

That last one is the trap in its complete form. The credit forces a second order at a platform that already failed once, and a failure on the second order can leave the money in a state where nobody will convert it back to cash.

The Spanish-language reviews describe the identical mechanism:

Two practical consequences follow, and both are actionable. A credit that expires in 90 days is worth less than its face value, and for an occasional user it may be worth nothing at all. And a credit is not a chargeback-eligible refund. If the money left your card and came back as store currency, your card issuer still shows a completed charge for goods you never received.

"Too Many Refunds"

18 reviews describe a refund refused outright, and inside that group is a smaller pattern that deserves its own section because almost nobody knows about it until it happens: reviewers report being cut off from the refund process entirely after they complain too often.

As other reviews mention, if they deem you have reported 'too many' delivery issues (missing/wrong items, etc.) they block you from submitting more refund requests for errant orders. Upshot, you'll be paying for food you never get.

They told me I didn't qualify for the 'late order' guarantee. It took an hour an a half to get an order from Burger King and they complained and said maybe I been getting too many refunds. I wouldn't need a refund if my orders were on time and correct. How are they going to punish me for their mistakes??

In the first month of my new premium account, there were three verifiable mess-ups on the service side. So when I forgot to change my location after coming home from an out-of-town work trip, the company automatically declined my request for a credit, insinuating fraud due to too many issues, although that was the first issue that was on my end. And I couldn't appeal to a real person. Just an automated system that had an automatic calculation.

they refuse to refund me because they see that I have too many complaints but the drivers and stores are messing up. I wouldn't need to get a refund if they did their job right.

just got the app. I've had orders be fine, slightly wrong or delivered next door. where I drew the line is when I dont even get an item I paid for and when I try and report it, it says already requested refunds. as I said, just got the app, so thats clearly false.

An anti-abuse threshold on refund requests is a completely legitimate thing for a delivery platform to run. Refund fraud is real and it is expensive. What these reviews describe is not the existence of the threshold. It is that it appears to count incidents without weighing who caused them, and that the appeal path lands in the same automated system that made the call. A customer in an area with chronic driver shortages accumulates legitimate failures faster than anyone else, and by these accounts that is exactly the customer who gets locked out of the remedy.

Dark Mode: An Android Regression That Is Still Live

Now the cleanest defect in the set, and the one nobody outside the Play Store review feed seems to have noticed.

38 reviews complain that dark mode disappeared from the Android app. Zero iOS reviews mention it. The complaints begin on 26 June 2026, cluster on builds 2026.25 and 2026.26, and were still arriving on build 2026.30 on 29 July. That is five weeks of the same report across five consecutive releases.

7/1 - What did you guys do with the recent update?! Dark mode is gone, glaring white is no bueno. 7/15 Update, it's still GLARING WHITE. I won't be ordering until this is fixed.

The new update seems to have removed dark mode, and that really sucks.

I've been using this app for years and for some reason it automatically set my app to light mode and removed the app settings tab so I can't change it back.

They took away dark mode, and support didn't even know about it. I'm more than a little annoyed about that, not least because the app is now blindingly white unlike everything else on my phone.

This is not a cosmetic preference for a meaningful share of the people reporting it. 19 reviews in the wider set raise accessibility, and the dark mode reports are where most of them sit.

Dark mode has suddenly disappeared. I suffer from migraines that are triggered by light and I will not be using this app again until it's fixed. This is a serious accessibility issue.

They took away dark mode and as someone who gets migraines staring at bright white pages, especially in a dark area, it makes the app unusable. I refuse to use it until there is an option to revert back.

I don't wanna appreciate that. They changed the app completely where I can no longer use it. Because i'm blind and they took away dark mode.

the app switched randomly to light mode and I cannot get it to switch back to dark mode, please let this be an option I can have again, light mode is physically painful for me to look at.

a recent UPDATE forces the removal of dark mode on my phone in this app. FORCES my settings to disable for this app. therefore its bright as hell now, hard to read, and drains my battery at insane speeds.

The workarounds reviewers tried, and what happened, are documented in the reviews themselves. System-wide dark mode does not fix it. Several reviewers had it already enabled. Force-dark in Android developer options does not hold:

I even contacted support about this and they told me to turn on system wide dark mode (already on) or 'force dark mode in phone developer settings'. as I was checking my settings on my phone for such a thing, they ended the chat.

Dark mode is gone on my device, and it's not switchable from light mode or dark mode. The only way to get it back is to delete and uninstall to bring it back each time until it just doesn't work. even tried Force dark mode, it just reverts back.

One reviewer reports reinstalling restored it temporarily until it stopped working. That is the signature of a server-side flag rather than a build change, which would also explain why the complaint spans five consecutive versions instead of arriving with one and leaving with the next.

A separate accessibility report is worth carrying alongside it, because it points at the same neglected surface:

As a legally blind individual, I depend on screen readers, specifically TalkBack. When attempting to scroll through restaurant menus, the GrubHub application fails to properly interface with the screen reader, consequently preventing me from accessing menu items in certain sections. In its current state, the application is unusable, often leading me to opt for Uber Eats.

It's very sad to me that in the year 2026 there are still some applications that care so little about Blind and Visually Impaired people. I was able to sign up and login and everything but for some reason I cannot add a payment method.

The Markup Above the Menu Price

30 reviews are about cost, and the specific complaint is more precise than "delivery is expensive." It is that the item prices inside Grubhub are higher than the same restaurant's own menu, and that this survives the free-delivery benefit people signed up for.

Very convenient, but I wish the prices were more transparent. The delivery fee always seems surprisingly low, but that's because all of the menu items have hidden upcharges above what the restaurant actually charges.

they upcharge everything. go directly to restaurant menus and see for yourself. grubhub charges 15$ for the same 10$ meal even before delivery fees. then after its $25.

Their upcharging on items is insane. Issue last night, food $40 before tip on app, went to store myself and it was $23.

my order this morning was $41.32 with a cheap 15% tip added. I was able to place the same order with 23% tip for $33.22 through Uber eats. $8 less for the exact same thing and more money to the driver.

I get free delivery with prime so they mark up the prices so I still pay it either way. compared exact same order from Taco Bell with door dash and it was still more even with free delivery.

Spanish

se han vuelto carisimoos, es mucho mas costoso que otras aplicaciones, he comparado un pedido con uber que grubhub me cobra 32.7 mientras que en Uber me estan cobrando 24.11.

Two of those are direct price comparisons a reader can repeat in five minutes, and they point the same way. Menu markup is invisible at checkout in a way that fees are not, because a fee has a line and a marked-up burrito does not.

21 reviews mention Amazon Prime, and the pattern there is worth flagging on its own: a large share of the angriest reviewers in this set are not paying customers who chose Grubhub. They are Prime members who got it bundled, tried it, and are comparing it to the app they used to pay for.

Regardless of it saying no fees for Prime members, there's always a Prime service fee.

Unless you order 50.00 worth of food you don't get free delivery. There are still service fees etc.

the recent partnership with Amazon Prime is a major money grab for them, only specific Grubhub+ restaurants apply to the grubhub+ discounted delivery and fees, unlike both door dash and Uber eats who apply the discounts across the board.

The Delivery Code

A smaller cluster, nine reviews, but it is recent, it is specific, and it is the kind of thing that gets shipped to solve one problem and creates another.

the implementation of the drivers code has caused nothing but headache and hunger for me. no, i dont wanna sit there and negotiate with drivers for the food i paid for, and it'd be fine if they dropped food off first but half of them don't, they wait until they have the code then consider dropping food off.

I have had to submit a two digit number every time I've ordered for over the last month or else the driver will sit in my driveway and not deliver the food. It says this should only happen every 'now and then' on the app but I've had to do it every time.

The app didn't even ask if I wanted contactless delivery, so I had to show my delivery driver a 2 digit code against my will.

the app doesnt even respect the pin, ive been delivered so many no contact deliveries without even getting a call or text.

The code exists to stop the theft that 19 other reviews in this set describe, so it is solving a real problem. But two things in these reports look like defects rather than policy: it is firing on every order for users who say it should be occasional, and it removes contactless delivery for people who chose contactless.

What Is Not Grubhub's Fault

Fairness requires pulling several things out of the pile.

A driver who steals food is committing a crime, not exposing a software bug, and Grubhub refunded most of the reviewers this happened to. A restaurant that closes early, runs out of an item, or cooks badly is not the app. A rainstorm that empties the driver pool at 8pm on a Friday is not a product decision. And a real share of these reviews are about food arriving cold from a restaurant fifteen minutes away, which is thermodynamics as much as logistics.

The driver-quality complaints also need care. Several reviews in this set attribute problems to drivers being foreign or not speaking English. We did not count those as a finding, because the underlying failures they describe, wrong address and no contact before drop-off, are already counted on their own and have nothing to do with who is driving.

There is one honest counterweight to the whole article, and it appears in the reviews repeatedly: complaining publicly works.

They will only offer a 5 dollar credit on a 35+ order. horrible app horrible customer service. edit: AFTER my review they refunded me. Just so everyone knows how they operate.

added one star bc customer service did reach out by email to listen.

That is a real recovery path and readers should know about it. It is also, structurally, an admission that the first-line remedy was set too low, since a public review is the only lever that reliably moves it.

Finally, an iOS average of 4.75 across 4.6 million ratings is not the profile of a broken service. Most Grubhub orders arrive. Everything above is the tail, and the tail is loud because the compensation is fixed while the losses are not.

What to Do When a Grubhub Order Fails

1. Report the problem while the order is still open, not after. Multiple reviewers say the late-order remedy was denied because they waited until the food arrived to complain. One puts it directly: "Submit a request for help the moment your food is delayed or you will not get a refund."

2. Ask explicitly for the refund to go to the original payment method. The default in these reviews is app credit. Reviewers who specified got cash back more often than reviewers who accepted what was offered.

3. Do not accept a credit on a large order without doing the arithmetic first. $5 on a $40 order is 12.5% of an order you did not receive. Accepting it may close the case.

4. Screenshot the order total, the promised delivery window, and the tracker. The single most common dispute in this set is over what the app originally promised, and the ETA gets rewritten in place.

5. If they refuse and the food never arrived, go to your card issuer. A charge for undelivered goods is a straightforward dispute. This is also why point 2 matters: once you accept store credit, the card charge looks settled.

6. Compare the item prices against the restaurant's own menu once. Do it a single time for a restaurant you order from often. Two reviewers found $8 and $17 gaps on identical orders.

7. If you are on Grubhub+ through Amazon Prime and never use it, check what it is doing to your billing. See the Grubhub cancellation guide for how store-billed subscriptions behave when you stop them.

The Bottom Line

Grubhub's app is not the disaster its recent review mix suggests, and a 4.75 iOS average across 4.6 million ratings is the proof. Ordering works. The interface works, dark mode aside. Most food arrives.

What 292 reviews describe is a service whose failure rate sits roughly where its competitors' does, paired with a remedy that does not scale with the loss. A flat $5, often as expiring store credit, occasionally converted into a permanent block on requesting anything at all. That combination is what turns a late burrito into a one-star review and a customer who names DoorDash in the last sentence, which reviewers in this set do over and over.

And running underneath it, a five-week-old Android regression that removed dark mode from an app used by people who get migraines from bright screens, which support reportedly did not know about. That one costs nothing to fix and it is still there.
