X Login Blocked: 94 Reviews, One Error Message (2026)
X holds 4.80 stars on Google Play from 24.3 million ratings and 4.58 on the App Store. We read 1,788 substantial negative US reviews from a continuous 45 day run, and 94 of them hit the same wall: an app installed from Google Play telling them to use the official X app. 16 mention a reinstall, and 8 of those reinstalled to fix a different bug. Plus 42 more reviews across 15 storefronts in their own languages.
X holds 4.80 stars on Google Play from 24,290,631 ratings. 620,698 of those are a single star, and 987,369 of them, 4.1% of everything the store has counted, are 1 to 3 stars. On the App Store the same product holds 4.58 from 11,044,909 ratings, which means the store gap runs the other way here: the Android build is rated higher than the iOS one, and nothing below changes that.
We pulled the 20,100 most recent US Google Play reviews, a continuous run from 7 August to 20 September 2026: 45 days, a review on every one of them, no gap in the daily counts. 4,930 of them were 1 to 3 stars, and 1,788 of those negatives were substantial, meaning at least 120 characters of actual writing rather than a bare "fix it". 81.2% of the substantial negatives were one star.
94 of those 1,788, or 5.3%, describe the same login screen. They downloaded X from the Google Play Store, they tapped sign in, and the app told them to use the official X app.
87.2% of them are one star, against 81.2% for the corpus as a whole. That gap is not about outrage. It is what a complaint looks like when the person writing it cannot get in at all.
The Error Message, Word for Word
Reviewers quote it with small variations, which is what you would expect from people retyping a toast from memory, but the string is stable: "Please use official X apps to proceed or try again later."
Hello. I cannot log in to my X account using the X app I installed from the Google Play Store; the app displays an error message that reads: "Please use official X apps to proceed or try again later." My phone is a Galaxy S8+ running its stock Android 9; I haven't rooted the device or unlocked the bootloader, so I don't know what the app is taking issue with.
That review is the whole story in one paragraph. Play Store install, stock Android, no root, no unlocked bootloader, and a message telling the user that the app they are holding is not the app they are holding.
Can't sign in due to an error that states I'm not using the official X app, even though I downloaded it from the Play Store on an unmodified device.
Fully rebuilt apparently means you can no longer login. "Please use official X apps" is a pretty unhelpful error message on the official X app but it is very much on brand.
For many weeks now, I've been trying to log in into my X account but I keep getting the error message that I should 'use the official X app to proceed or trying again later'. But I understand that the official X app is this same one I've been using since. I've tried and tried and it's not working.
29 of the 94 go out of their way to say where they got the app. They name the Play Store, unprompted, in a review box, because the message accuses them of something and they are defending themselves against it. That is an unusual thing to find in a review corpus, and it tells you the error text is not just unhelpful, it is read as an accusation.
One Measurement Correction, Reported Because It Matters
Our first pass matched 95 reviews. One of them was about an account suspension and an automated appeal, and it matched only because the phrase "official appeal" contains the literal string "official app". A word boundary on the end of that word would have thrown it out, and our first pattern did not have one.
So the number is 94, not 95. We are showing the miss because the same class of error is why review counts drift: a regex returns 95, a reader who trusts the regex reports 95, and the honest answer is 94.
It Is Not One Bad Build, and It Is Getting Worse
Google Play attaches the reviewer's installed build to most reviews, which lets us ask whether a single release broke this.
It did not. The 94 reviews are spread across 30 distinct build numbers, from 12.14 through 12.27. Among builds with at least 30 substantial negatives in our window, the share runs from 0% to 10.2%, with no single release carrying the cluster the way a regression would.
What does move is the trend. Here is the share of each week's substantial negatives that describe this login block:
| Week beginning | Share |
|---|---|
| 10 August | 12 of 343 = 3.5% |
| 17 August | 12 of 280 = 4.3% |
| 24 August | 12 of 235 = 5.1% |
| 31 August | 18 of 278 = 6.5% |
| 7 September | 21 of 304 = 6.9% |
| 14 September | 14 of 264 = 5.3% |
August ran at 4.5% of substantial negatives, September at 6.2%. That is a complaint widening, not a bug shipping.
6 of the 94 say it has been going on for weeks or months, and one says a couple of months. This is not a transient outage that clears if you wait, whatever the "or try again later" half of the message implies. The longest run anyone reports is in the Turkish store, further down: four months.
The Reinstall Trap
This is the part worth knowing before you touch anything.
16 of the 94 mention uninstalling, reinstalling, or resetting the device. 8 of those 16 say the reinstall was not the problem they were trying to solve. They reinstalled because something else in the app was broken, and the reinstall is what locked them out.
I've been having a hard time replying to posts for a long time now, it always says "failed to send post" eventhough I'm not banned and just replying to my mutuals. Then when I uninstalled and reinstalled today and I tried to log in, I got an error message saying "Please use official X apps to proceed." So you mean this app that I downloaded on Google Play is not an official X app? What is wrong with your app?
Good day, I don't understand what is going on with X app. I have been unable to comment on tweets but I can like and retweet, and I can also send new tweets myself. So I tried uninstalling this morning so i can reinstall it and login to check if i can comment on tweets but ever since i reinstalled it i have been unable to login back, i keep getting message that i should use official X app to login.
I can't access this app after reinstalling multiple attemps, saying i have to use official X app while i tried reinstalling due to post/reply bug.
i uninstall this app because it keeps putting my comments in draft, so when i install it again and try to log in my account it says "log in to official app of X", like wdym isn't this is the official app of x? so why?? why can't i log in back??
Unable to login...I',m being told to use the X official app which I am already using. I also couldn't reply to posts on the app which was the main reason I re-installed it. Fix up
The pattern in all of these is the same. Replies fail to send, or comments will not post, or drafts eat what you typed. The standard advice for any Android app in that state is to clear data or reinstall. On X, doing that ends an authenticated session you cannot start again.
We want to be precise about what this is and is not. 8 reviews is a small group, and we cannot say what share of everyone who reinstalls gets locked out, because people who reinstall successfully do not write reviews about it. What we can say is that of the people who ended up locked out and explained how they got there, the most common route was a reinstall they did for an unrelated reason.
App worked perfectly for 12 years than one update killed it had to uninstall and reinstall now I cant log in it tells me I need an official x app. isn't Play Store official.
Which Devices, and What That Suggests
11 of the 94 name a device or an Android version. Between them, in the order they appear, they name a Galaxy S8 Plus on stock Android 9, a Samsung Tab S7, a Samsung Tab A7 Lite, an Amazon Fire tablet, a Huawei phone, a Xiaomi 14T Pro, an Infinix Smart 9, a Pixel 4 XL, a Motorola on Android 13, a phone running LineageOS, and a handheld Android gaming device.
That list has a shape. Older Android versions, tablets, Huawei hardware without Google services, a Fire tablet running Amazon's fork, and a custom ROM are all devices that fail or return a weak result from Google's Play Integrity attestation, the check an app uses to ask Android whether it is running on a genuine, uncompromised device with a genuine copy of the app. One reviewer names the failure outright.
this application will not work on any Android Amazon fire tablet it says login error attestation denied and it will not work at any point in time no matter if I update uninstall it and then reinstall it it still does not work
Doesn't work on Lineage OS! Login via official app denies by asking to login via official app or Website!
I have downloaded, reinstalled, updated, downloaded and tried apks nothing works I'm using a Motorola on android 13 and all I get even using the play store no matter what options I choose to login is just "please use official x apps or try again later" ive had this problem for over a month.
We are not going to claim that every one of the 94 is an attestation failure, because only one review contains the word and the rest describe a symptom, not a cause. But "the official app is not recognised as official" is exactly what a failed device or app integrity check looks like from the user's side, and the device list is consistent with it rather than with an account problem.
The flip side is that a Pixel 4 XL and a Motorola on Android 13 are not exotic devices, and neither is a stock Galaxy. Whatever the check is, it is not only rejecting the edge cases.
Does the Browser Still Work? Sometimes
13 of the 94 mention a browser, a laptop or a desktop. Nine of them say whether it worked, and those nine split.
4 say the web still lets them in, which makes it the one workaround anybody in this corpus reports succeeding with.
unable to login, shows error Please use official X apps to proceed or try again later. useless app! Now it shows sorry you are not allowed to login at this time! such a joke. I can login without any issues on a browser.
I am currently experiencing Login Issue via X app. It says "Please use official X apps to proceed or try again later" I really do not understand as I only use the web version now, which i don't like.
5 say the web pushed them back to the app, which is the same wall from a different direction.
I get blocked (again) on X web (desktop) after just clicking a post "confirm you're a human" ok "scan this QR with your phone" ok "download the official X app to continue" ok "enter your email address" ok "please use official X apps to proceed" ???
It doesn't work. Tried using the app for the first time and it does not let me login (it says "Please use official X apps to proceed or try again later"). Waited a couple weeks and it hasn't changed. In fact, I can't even login on the computer like I used to, either. Now I can only really get in on the browser on my phone.
That second group is the reason we are not presenting the browser as a fix. It is a workaround that works for some people and dead ends for others, and which one you get appears to depend on whether the site decides to hand you a verification step.
4 of the 94 were not logging back in at all. They were trying to create a new account and never got one.
What to Actually Do
Nothing below is a guaranteed fix, because nothing in 94 reviews reads like a guaranteed fix. This is the order that costs you the least and preserves the most.
Step 1: Do not uninstall the app if you are still signed in
If X is misbehaving but you are still logged in, treat your session as the valuable thing. Reinstalling is the single most common route into this lockout in our corpus. Force stop the app and reopen it, or clear the cache only. Clearing storage or removing the app can end a session you may not be able to restart.
Step 2: Confirm the install actually came from Google Play
Open the Play Store, search for X, and check that it shows Open or Update rather than Install. A sideloaded APK, a copy from a third party store, or a build carried over by a phone transfer tool will fail an app integrity check even though the icon looks right. One reviewer in our set says outright that they tried APKs, and that is the one route that definitely will not clear this.
Step 3: Update Google Play Services and the Play Store itself
The attestation an app receives is issued by Google Play Services, not by X. If Play Services is out of date, or if the Play Store app on the device is stale, the answer it returns can be weaker than the app demands. Update both from Settings, then Apps, then Google Play Services, and from the Play Store's own settings page, and reboot before trying again.
Step 4: Try the login from a mobile browser first
Open x.com in Chrome on the same phone and sign in there. If that works, your account and password are fine and the problem is device side, which narrows what is worth trying next. If the browser also hands you a verification step and points you back to the app, you are in the second group above, and the next step matters more.
Step 5: Treat a second device as a test, not a cure
Signing in on another phone tells you whether the block follows your account or your hardware, and that is worth knowing. It is not a fix, and our corpus is a warning here rather than an encouragement: the only two reviewers who describe switching phones say the block started on the new device, not the old one. Getting a new phone is one of the ways people arrive at this screen.
Step 6: If you are on a Fire tablet, a custom ROM, or a Huawei device, stop here
Amazon's Fire OS, LineageOS and other custom ROMs, and Huawei hardware shipped without Google Mobile Services cannot produce the attestation the app is asking for. No amount of reinstalling changes that. On those devices the browser is the only route, and if the browser pushes you back to the app you are out of options until X changes the check.
It Is Not a US Problem
We ran the same search across 28 more Google Play storefronts in their own languages. Three of them, Mexico, Portugal and Egypt, returned reviews we had already seen, a documented pattern where the store serves one locale's reviews to another. The remaining 25 added 10,643 reviews the US pull had not seen and 1,164 more substantial negatives.
48 of those matched. We read all 48 and eliminated 6 that were about account suspensions or a support thread rather than this login block, leaving 42 across 15 storefronts. Indonesia leads with 9, then Turkey with 6, Brazil and France with 4 each.
The string is localised, and the reaction is identical everywhere: the reviewer quotes the message back and then asks what other X app there could possibly be.

Germankein einloggen mehr möglich nach Handy Verlust. sobald ich mich mit Google anmelden möchte, zeigt es an "bitte nutze dafür die offizielle x-app"... Fehler anscheinend bekannt aber nicht behoben
That German review adds a detail the US corpus only hints at. The lockout started after the reviewer lost their phone, which is the moment you most need to sign in on a new device and the moment this check is least likely to let you.

That last one is the reinstall trap in Indonesian: could not reply to a tweet, uninstalled, downloaded again, and now cannot log in.
The Korean reviewer is describing a second-order consequence nobody else in the corpus names. Multiple accounts on a spare device were logged out at once, each one now needs a fresh login, each fresh login hits the wall, and the reviewer is refusing to update X on their main phone in case the same thing happens there.
The Bottom Line
X's 4.80 on Google Play is not in danger from this. 94 reviews out of 1,788 substantial negatives in a 45 day window is a rounding error against 24 million ratings, and the Android build is still rated higher than the iOS one.
What the number does tell you is that this is real, it is not your device being weird, and it is not one bad release. It has been present on 30 different builds, it rose from 3.5% to 6.9% of substantial negatives over six weeks, it has been going for months for some people, and it shows up in the same words in 15 more countries.
If you are reading this because you are locked out right now: do not reinstall anything else, update Google Play Services, and try x.com in a browser on the same phone. If the browser lets you in, you have an account that is fine and a device the app has decided not to trust.
