PNC App Not Responding? What 124 Reviews Say (2026)
PNC Mobile holds 4.43 stars from 314,639 Google Play ratings. In 6,000 US reviews from January to September 2026, negative reviews jumped from 19.1% to 45.6% after the 5.0 update in May and to 59.3% after the late August redesign. We read 124 reports of the "wait or close" pop-up and 275 reviews about fixes to see what actually works.
You open the PNC app to check a balance or send a Zelle payment, and before you get anywhere Android puts a box over it: PNC isn't responding. Wait, or close app. You tap Wait. A few seconds later the same box is back.
That pop-up is the most specific complaint in PNC's Google Play reviews this year, and it arrived on a date you can see in the data. So did the second wave of complaints, a redesign in late August that changed how the app looks and how many taps it takes to do anything.
PNC Mobile holds 4.43 stars from 314,639 Google Play ratings. On the App Store it holds 4.84 from 2,046,092. That gap is part of the story: the complaints below are almost entirely from Android, and many reviewers say so.
Quick Answer: Why Does the PNC App Keep Saying It Is Not Responding?
The pop-up started with the PNC app's 5.0 update in mid May 2026. In 6,000 US Google Play reviews, 124 negative reviews describe the "wait or close" message, 115 of them from 16 May onward. 24 say the app was actually still working behind it and that tapping Wait let them carry on; 3 say Wait did nothing. It peaked in June, when 10% of all negative reviews mentioned it, and has faded since: 7 reports since the 27 August update. For getting in at all, the fix reviewers report using most is the blunt one. 48 say reinstalling works, but only for a while, and 54 say reinstalling did not help. 14 force stop and reopen the app every time. The complication is Zelle: 29 reviewers say PNC only offers it in the app, not on the website.
How We Read These Reviews
We pulled the 6,000 most recent US Google Play reviews for PNC Mobile on 25 September 2026. They run from 18 January to 25 September 2026, 251 days with reviews on every single one. 2,297 are 1 to 3 stars.
For the pop-up, we searched every review at any rating for "wait or close", "not responding", "keeps stopping" and similar wording. That returned 126 reviews. We read all of them, and every one describes the Android pop-up; none were about a person not responding. 124 are 1 to 3 stars.
For fixes, we read every review since 1 May that mentions the pop-up or a fix (reinstalling, clearing the cache, force stopping, restarting): 275 reviews. The counts in the fixes section come from that reading, not from a keyword match.
What Changed: Two Updates, Two Waves
The clearest way to see what happened is the share of all reviews that are negative, month by month:
| Month (2026) | 1-3 star reviews | All reviews | Negative share |
|---|---|---|---|
| February | 99 | 626 | 15.8% |
| March | 115 | 580 | 19.8% |
| April | 109 | 623 | 17.5% |
| May | 346 | 770 | 44.9% |
| June | 389 | 896 | 43.4% |
| July | 339 | 744 | 45.6% |
| August | 321 | 739 | 43.4% |
| September (to the 25th) | 539 | 872 | 61.8% |
Version 5.0.0 first appears in the reviews on 16 May, and 5.0.1 on 17 May. Before 16 May, 19.1% of reviews were negative. From 16 May to 26 August, 45.6% were. Then version 5.4.2 arrives on 27 August, with a new design, and from 27 August to 25 September the negative share is 59.3%, 600 of 1,012 reviews.
There is a third thing happening at the same time. PNC bought FirstBank, and 49 reviews name FirstBank, the first on 19 June. Those customers were moved to the PNC app in the middle of all this, and most of them are unhappy about it. But the jump in May comes a month before the first FirstBank review, so the merger does not explain the first wave. And five FirstBank reviewers give the switch five stars:
PNC took over 1STBank. I thought it would be more heartburn. Much to my delight, PNC has been very easy to work with.
The Pop-Up: "PNC Isn't Responding. Wait or Close App"
Before 16 May the pop-up was rare: 9 negative reviews in four months, 2.2% of the negatives. After 5.0 it became a steady complaint, 29 negative reviews in May and 40 in June, 10% of all negative reviews that month, then 19 in July, 14 in August and 5 in September.
with the 5/18/26 update, I continually get an App Not Responding pop up even though it is responding normally. This makes navigation and app usage very difficult
Hard to use when a not responding notification pops up every 5 seconds. Yes, I counted. I wish I were exaggerating
27 reviewers put a number on how often it appears, from every two or three seconds to every thirty. Five and ten seconds are the most common answers.
It is often a false alarm
The most useful detail in these reviews is that, for many people, the app has not actually frozen. 24 reviewers say the app was still working behind the pop-up, and that tapping Wait let them finish what they were doing. The pop-up is Android's own warning that an app has not responded for a few seconds, and in these reports it fires while the app is still going.
Constantly getting an error message stating the app has stopped responding, prompting me to either close the app or wait. If I press wait, the app resumes functioning properly, but the error message pops up again after a few seconds. Very annoying.
Not brilliant or boring. Every 3 seconds Android sends a pop-up that the app keeps stopping, when it appears to be working fine.
Three say Wait did nothing, and two of those were in the middle of something that matters. One was trying to send a Zelle payment:
After the update, I cannot use Zelle. As soon as I press the Send button, the app stops responding. I am forced to close the app as the "wait" feature doesn't do anything at all. I have uninstalled and reinstalled the app a few times, but to no avail.
It usually comes with a login problem
The pop-up rarely appears on its own. Reviewers describe it alongside an app that will not get past the splash screen, biometric login that keeps switching itself off, and sign-ins that time out. Biometric complaints are older than both updates: they were between 15% and 21% of negative reviews every month from January to April.
5/18/2026 Update completely broke the app and changed the icon, can't even get past the splash screen now. Cleared the cache, data, and restarted, no dice.
The Redesign: 27 August
The second wave is a different kind of complaint. Version 5.4.2 changed the look of the app, and the reviews since then are less about crashes and more about the design itself.
We found 150 negative reviews about the redesign since 27 August, 25.0% of all 600 negative reviews in that period, 92 of them one star. We read all of them. The most common specific complaints are that it is slower (23), that the text is smaller or harder to read (18), and that simple tasks now take more taps or screens (17).
The update is a massive step backwards. In the old app doing things like pay your CC was CLICK > fill out form > submit... now that is NEXT > NEXT... 4+ times for what was 1 STEP FORM.
I hate the new update. The PNC app used to be very readable and now the typeface is smaller and not nearly as easy on the eyes. As someone with poor vision, I wish I could revert back to the previous version.
One reviewer makes a point worth separating out, that their problem is not the look but that the new version does not work:
I fear this negative review will be taken as simply complaining of the newest update to GUI changes (which most complaints after a major UI change are about) but my complaints are NOT because of this. The newest version simply does NOT function.
The redesign also has fans, and in numbers that are not trivial. 32 reviews of four or five stars since 27 August praise the new app or its look. Six four and five star reviews in the same period say they preferred the old one.
The new app design is beautiful! Well thought out and simple, which is the best combination. Kudos
Just got the new app and absolutely love it, more information with less steps to see what you need when checking your account!
Why the App Matters More at PNC: Zelle
For most banks, a broken app means you log in on the website instead. Several PNC reviewers say that does not work for the thing they use the app for most. 29 reviewers say Zelle is only available in the PNC app, not on the website, 25 of them since the May update.
The app sucks!! I have had to uninstall and reinstall it a dozen times. It's the only fix when the App won't load. it is a constant problem, and PNC only allows Zelle on the App, you can't Zelle from the website. the transition from 1stBank to PNC has totally sucked!
That review also sums up the whole fixes section in one line: reinstalling is "the only fix when the App won't load."
What Reviewers Tried, and What Worked
We read 275 reviews since 1 May about the pop-up and about getting the app to open. Here is what they report.
Reinstalling. This is the most common thing people do, and the reports split almost evenly. 54 say uninstalling and reinstalling did not fix the problem. 48 describe reinstalling as their routine workaround: it works, once or for a few days, and then they do it again.
This is buggy. PNC bought out my bank; I never had a problem w my previous bank's app. This one stalls and won't open every time I try to open it. I have to uninstall and reload all the time. I would say it doesn't open 80% of the time.
Force stopping. 14 reviewers say they force stop the app and reopen it before they can get to the login screen, some of them every single time:
Every time I want to use this app, I have to open it, force close it, and re-open. It's been like this for several months. Please fix it.
Clearing the cache. 6 say it helped, 15 say it did not. One reviewer describes needing to force stop and clear the cache every time to get past the splash screen a second time:
Update prevents launching app twice in a row. Must either force stop and clear cache or, full less technically proficient users, reboot fully to get past splash screen a second time Update Still broken Should I get a new bank?
Restarting the phone. 17 reviewers say they restart their phone to get into the app. Nobody says it fixed the problem for good.
Customer service. Four reviewers describe what support told them: three were told to uninstall, reinstall or restart their phone, and one was told to use the website instead:
app stalls and is unreliable even the customer service person on the phone advised using the web site instead this supposed upgrade should be dumped yesterday
Updating Android. One reviewer says the app started working after their phone updated to Android 17. That is a single report, so treat it as a possibility, not a fix.
Step 1: If You See "Wait or Close", Tap Wait First
24 reviewers say the app was still working behind the pop-up and that Wait let them finish. Only 3 say Wait did nothing. Closing the app is what Android offers as the alternative, and one reviewer says choosing it also turned off their biometric login.
Step 2: If the App Will Not Open, Force Stop It and Reopen
14 reviewers describe this as their routine, and it is the least destructive thing to try: force stop the PNC app from its app info screen in your phone's settings, then open it again.
Step 3: Clear the Cache Before You Reinstall
Clearing the cache is a smaller step than reinstalling. It helped 6 reviewers and did not help 15, so it is worth one try before the bigger step. Clearing the app's data or storage is closer to a reinstall.
Step 4: Reinstall as a Last Resort, and Expect to Set Up Login Again
48 reviewers use reinstalling as a workaround and 54 say it did not help. If you do it, expect to sign in with your password again and to re-enroll fingerprint or face login. One reviewer had to reset their password after reinstalling to get Zelle working, and another says biometrics only came back after turning them off and on again once logged in.
Step 5: Restart the Phone If Nothing Else Works
17 reviewers restart their phone to get into the app. It is slow, but it is the step that nobody reports as making things worse.
Step 6: Plan Around Zelle
29 reviewers say Zelle is app only at PNC. If you rely on it, do not wait until you need to send money to find out the app will not open. For balances, transfers and bill pay, the website is the fallback several reviewers use, and one says a PNC phone representative told them to use it.
