Spotify Free Won't Let You Pick a Song: 180 Reviews (2026)
Spotify holds 4.35 stars on Google Play from 36.3 million ratings and 4.77 on the App Store. We read 3,486 substantial negative US reviews from a continuous 43 day run, and 180 of them say they cannot choose which song plays. 22 name a skip limit and 21 of them say six. 11 name the limit on picking songs, and they give nine different answers. Plus 49 more reviews across 15 storefronts in their own languages.
Spotify holds 4.35 stars on Google Play from 36,341,860 ratings. 3,705,755 of those are a single star, and 6,087,023 of them, 16.7% of everything the store has counted, are 1 to 3 stars. The same app holds 4.77 on the App Store from 42,188,120 ratings. That is a 0.42 star gap between two builds of the same service, and the restriction this article is about applies to both of them.
We pulled the 30,000 most recent US Google Play reviews, a continuous run from 9 August to 20 September 2026: 43 days, a review on every one of them, no gap in the daily counts. 8,314 of them were 1 to 3 stars, and 3,486 of those negatives were substantial, meaning at least 120 characters of actual writing rather than a bare "too many ads". 63.8% of the substantial negatives were one star.
180 of those 3,486, or 5.2%, are about the same thing: you cannot choose which song plays. You open your own playlist, tap a track, and Spotify plays something else.
Our first pass matched 190. We read all 190 and eliminated 10 that were about something adjacent but different: shuffle replaying the same handful of tracks out of hundreds, recommendations being bad, a playlist failing to load, one review about a song being unavailable in another country. That left 180, of which 71.1% are one star.
This is not a bug, and we are not going to pretend it is. It is how Spotify's free tier works on a phone. What the reviews show is something narrower and more useful: nobody can tell you where the line is, because the line is not written down anywhere, and the reviewers who try to describe it give nine different answers.
The Number Everyone Agrees On
22 of the 180 name a number for how many songs you can skip. 21 of them say six.
Unusable free tier. You can’t even skip songs properly without hitting a 6-skip limit per hour, and it forces you into shuffle mode where you can't even pick the exact song you want. On top of that, ads play every two or three tracks. Terrible user experience just to force people to buy Premium.
Spotify Free isn't a music player it's an ad platform that plays music occasionally. You can’t even pick the song you want on mobile you’re forced into permanent shuffle with a ridiculous 6-skip limit per hour. Back-to-back ads interrupt every single session.
One, only 6 skips per hour is a joke. Two, I can't listen to the songs I want at night? Yeah that's a horrid decision.
The single dissenter says three to five an hour, and is the only review in the set that does. That is what a known, fixed limit looks like from inside a review corpus: one number, repeated, with a stray.
The Number Nobody Agrees On
11 of the 180 name a number for the other limit, the one on how many songs you get to pick before the app stops letting you. Here is every answer they give.

Nine different answers from eleven people describing the same product in the same six weeks.
Some of that spread is real variation. Spotify's free tier behaves differently depending on the market, the playlist, whether a track is in one of the playlists that are unlocked for on demand play, and what the app has decided about you. But most of it is simpler than that: there is no counter on the screen. You do not get a number when you start and you do not see it tick down. You find out you have run out when the app stops obeying you.
The skip limit gets one answer because it is a fixed, long published number that anyone can look up. The pick limit gets nine because it is not.

Come Back Tomorrow
17 of the 180 describe a reset. Not an hour, not a cooldown you can wait out in a session: the next day.
Atp Im using other apps cuz Spotify is literally giving soooo many adds, irritating is what I would call it not to mention it's practically being fully p2w. like wdym after picking a few songs i have to wait another day to listen to the songs I want and in mobile they won't let you pick the song where you want from nor there is the option for songs one by one. its only "smart shuffle".
Spotify Free has recently become much more restrictive. I can no longer choose songs freely from my Liked Songs/playlist. After playing only a few selected songs, I’m forced into Shuffle and told to wait until tomorrow or get Premium.
it was great on free until they made the 6 skips per hour and I can't pick a specific song until 12am the next day. I may just leave this.
The free trail sucks on this app, you can only skip 6 songs per hour and can only chose certain songs to play before it tells you to come back tommorow to get more free skips, spotify would be so much better if you gave the free trail infinite skips and being able to play any song you want.
Money hungry AF I literally get 4 ads every 2 songs. Edit: This app still sucks by the way. Now whenever I put songs they'll give the same rotation. Not only that but if you don't pay for premium you basically get a slap in the face. Horrible app for anyone who doesn't pay premium, you can't pick the songs you like for more then 5 times an hour. If you break that you can't play songs for the whole day! Just a horrible app and if it wasn't so mainstream I would never be using it.
That last one contains the harshest version of the rule anyone reports: exceed the hourly allowance and the reviewer says picking is gone for the rest of the day, not the rest of the hour.
We cannot verify any of these numbers against Spotify's own documentation, because Spotify does not publish them. We can verify that people who have never met, in different countries, are describing the same shape: a small allowance, an invisible counter, and a reset at midnight.
The Moment It Actually Bites
The complaint is rarely "I wanted a random song and got a different random song". It is almost always the specific act of searching for a track, finding it, tapping it, and being charged for the privilege.
Changing my rating back to 1 star. Spotify is becoming increasingly idiotic and counterproductive. I search for a song, find the exact song, tap it, and then get told I need Premium just to play it. Basic on-demand playback shouldn't be a Premium feature.
Value extraction has peaked. Cannot even choose your own music after a handful of songs without a paid subscription. Tell me: how is this better than listening to the radio?
Finally moved to apple music and yt music. I hate Spotify free version as they give me a daily limit in the number of songs I can choose . I don't have the freedom to choose the songs I want to play. This is absurd and it absolutely irritated me.
The phrase that keeps appearing is "my own playlist". These are people who built a list, saved it, opened it, and were told they may not play the third item in it. Whatever the commercial logic, that is the exact interaction the reviews are written about.
Was my favourite app to listen music before all the updates came and made it all about 'premium' experience and nothing for us ordinary listeners. Very disappointing as I cannot even choose the songs that i want to for more than 6 times in a day, i cannot shuffle or unshuffle my playlist as it is
What Does Not Work: Blaming the Update
43 of the 180, or 23.9%, say this is new. They use words like "recent update", "used to be able to", "not like this before", "since the last version".
We looked, and inside our 43 day window we cannot confirm it. The cluster is flat.

Build numbers say the same thing. 9.1.72 runs at 4.9%, 9.1.76 at 5.7%, 9.1.78 at 4.5%, 9.1.80 at 3.5%. No release carries the cluster.
So either the change reviewers are describing happened before 9 August, which our window cannot see, or a lot of people are meeting a long standing restriction for the first time and reasonably assuming it just arrived. Both are plausible and our data cannot separate them. What we can say is that nothing changed in the six weeks we measured, so if you are waiting for a rollback, there is nothing here that suggests one is coming.
The One Group That Should Not Be Here
We ran a check for reviewers who identify themselves as paying subscribers, because a paying subscriber hitting this would mean something different. The pattern matched 8 reviews.
We read all 8. Seven of them are the opposite of what the match implies: people writing "I am not a premium member", "I was a premium user for years", "unless I pay for premium". One is a current subscriber, and what they describe is not the free tier limit at all.
i have Spotify premium, I've had it for around 2 weeks with no issues. currently, i cant play the songs i want. it starts playing a different song or the first song in my liked playlist, and no the song im actually trying to listen to.
A second one turned up in the international pull, in German, with the same shape and the same self identification.

Two reviews is not a finding, and we are not presenting it as one. It is worth flagging only because it is the one version of this complaint that would be a bug rather than a business rule, and because it shows why a regex match count has to be read rather than reported. Eight became one.
The Thing That Actually Helps
5 of the 180 compare devices, and all five say the same thing: the restriction is a phone restriction.
Can't even pick what songs to play without paying? Can't repeat songs either? Can't even control where I'm at in a song? I don't understand why the mobile app lacks so many of the features the desktop version has for free. The desktop version is solid at the free level; the mobile app is borderline unusable at the free level.
way too limited especially in phone. it works well in PC and I don't rlly mind the ads even tho theyre annoying but in mobile..?? u can't even choose songs u wanna listen to, u can't even play a specific part in the song, u can't go back, u can't loop, u can't view the lyrics, u can't do anything
they need to remove some restriction like they shuffle our favourite playlist and in pc edition there is no restriction. we can play in order
honestly, this is so stupid! Whenever I use my iPad, I can pick my own songs without it making me pay to listen tomorrow, it doesnt force on shuffle, but it crashes when i have in earbuds and the worst part ITS THE EXACT OPPOSITE FOR MY ANDROID!
That last one is the most interesting comparison in the corpus, because it is not phone against computer. It is an iPad against an Android phone, same account, and only one of them makes the reviewer wait until tomorrow.
If you are on the free tier and you want to hear a specific song right now, the desktop app and the web player are the answer, and they cost nothing. It is a bad answer if you are on a bus. It is the only one the corpus supports.
The other thing worth knowing is what is absent from all 180 reviews: nobody reports a way to reset the counter early. If the allowance runs on a calendar day, as the reset language in six languages suggests, then closing the app, clearing its cache or reinstalling it will not buy you another song, and no reviewer in this corpus claims otherwise.
It Is Not a US Problem
We ran the same search across 28 more Google Play storefronts in their own languages. Three of them, Mexico, Portugal and Egypt, returned reviews we had already seen, a documented pattern where the store serves one locale's reviews to another. The remaining 25 added 10,800 reviews the US pull had not seen and 899 more substantial negatives.
63 of those matched. We read all 63 and eliminated 14 that were about shuffle quality, ads or recommendations rather than the on demand block, leaving 49 across 15 storefronts. Italy leads with 9, then Brazil with 6, then Germany, South Korea and Poland with 4 each.
The Korean reviews are the most precise in any language we read.

Ten taps, then a prompt telling them to choose the song they want to hear tomorrow. That is the clearest description of the reset in the entire corpus, in any language, and it comes from a market nobody writing about Spotify's free tier in English would have looked at.

That second Korean review is the most useful one in the whole international pull. The reviewer calls the selection by name, pick and play, says it sometimes stops working on a free account, that tapping a song then produces a Premium prompt and forced random play, and that it worked again the next day. Someone reverse engineered the daily reset by accident.

The Greek reviewer caught the countdown changing under them: first the app said they could choose again in an hour, then it said tomorrow. They finish by saying they will use YouTube Music instead.

The German review has the best name for it. Clicksbegrenzung, a click limit, on choosing music. That is exactly what it is, and it is a better description than anything in the English reviews.

The Polish, Spanish, Greek and Korean reviews all independently describe the same midnight reset, in four languages and three alphabets, without any of them having read the others. That is the strongest evidence in this article that the daily allowance is real and not a misreading by a handful of annoyed people.
The Bottom Line
Spotify's 4.35 on Google Play has a lot of causes, and 180 reviews out of 3,486 substantial negatives in a 43 day window is not the biggest one. Ads are bigger. This one is worth writing about anyway, because it is the only complaint in the corpus where the user is not confused about what broke. Nothing broke. They are hitting a limit, and the limit will not tell them its own size.
The practical summary is short. On a phone, free Spotify gives you a small, uncounted number of deliberate song choices per day, six skips per hour, and a reset at midnight. On a desktop or the web player, free Spotify plays what you click. Nobody in 180 reviews reports a way to get the daily allowance back early, so if you have run out, the desktop is the only door left today.
