Reddit Blocked Mobile Web in April: 963 Reviews (2026)

Reddit holds 4.57 stars from 4,818,995 Google Play ratings. That average hides something specific: 267,251 of those ratings are a single star, and a large, datable share of the recent ones come from people who did not want the app at all.

We pulled the 22,000 most recent US Google Play reviews, a continuous run from 24 February to 13 September 2026 with no gap in the daily counts. 11,093 were 1 to 3 stars. 6,629 of the negatives were substantial (80 characters or more), and 86.8% of those were 1-star.

963 of the 6,629 are about one thing: Reddit's mobile website blocking them until they install the app. That is 14.5% of every substantial complaint in the window, and 98.2% of the 963 are 1-star, a higher share than the corpus as a whole.

The mobile website was intentionally broken with a non-dismissable popup trying to force users to download the app.

After 10 seconds of using the browser based Reddit on my phone a popup comes up blocking all usage and telling me to download this app.

The Date

The interesting number is not 963. It is when those 963 start.

Split at a single day instead of by month and it gets sharper. Before 24 April 2026 the corpus contains 1 complaint of this kind in 1,494 substantial negatives, or 0.1%. From 24 April onward it contains 962 in 5,135, or 18.7%.

The first two land on 24 April. Two days later a reviewer describes it as a test rather than a launch:

The Reddit mobile site is now a/b testing blocking access to pages with a full screen pop up banner that you cannot dismiss saying "download the app to continue using Reddit". I do not want an account, I do not want the app.

I can no longer use reddit in browser because of an unremoveable ad for the reddit app. This ad stops me from using reddit in my browser in an attempt to force me to install the app and use it instead.

By 28 April the daily count is 33. The complaints then run continuously for the rest of the window, with June the heaviest month.

What People Say It Does

The 963 describe a consistent mechanic. 71 of them say the popup cannot be dismissed. 102 say it freezes the page or stops scrolling rather than simply appearing. 20 say it fires after a set delay, usually 10 to 30 seconds of reading.

This app impedes my ability to use reddit. since third party clients were disabled I used the browser on my phone. as of a few days ago there is an uncloseable popup over the browser version of reddit and reddit is now unuseable on mobile except on desktop mode where the formatting is poor.

Giving 1 star just for the absolutely DISGUSTING browser popup that forces you to install the app or make an account while trying to view posts on the website on mobile and desktop respectively.

54 reviewers arrived from a search engine, which is the part Reddit's own growth depends on. They describe clicking a Google result, starting to read, and losing the page.

pointless app. I search for something on Google, follow a link to reddit web page. web page won't let you read it, says use the reddit app which is already installed and updated. won't open page in reddit app.

When I see a reddit post when searching Google, I want to read it in my browser. However now Reddit is blocking content in browser and forcing me to open the app - which loses the post I was originally reading in process. I end up avoiding reddit altogether now.

The People Who Already Have It

32 of the 963 say they already had the app installed and still got the wall. This is the group whose reviews are hardest to read as a preference argument: they are not refusing the app, they are describing a prompt that fires anyway and then fails to deliver them to the thread they were reading.

Get the app to keep using reddit... such a dumb prompt when you have the reddit app but are trying to read something from the web page.

I have the app installed. So why when I'm using my phone browser and I get the full screen popup telling me to use the app doesn't actually switch me to the app?

Keep getting 'get the app' popups in mobile browser even though I have the app. The quick check that happens if I use reddit via mobile to answer a Googled question doesn't need a transfer to app.

Installed It Only to Leave the Review

This is the detail that makes the cluster unusual. 31 reviewers state that the install was the review. They hit the wall, installed the app to reach the Play Store listing, wrote a 1-star review, and in several cases say they uninstalled immediately after.

reddit now locks you out of using the mobile web page to try and force you to use the app. well congrats, I've downloaded the app to give this slimy company the review it deserves.

I only installed this to make this review. I use my browser to read Reddit but now their website will cover the bottom half of the screen to install thier app.

31 out of 963 is 3.2%, and we are not claiming it explains the rating. We are pointing out that a mobile-web wall converts some share of blocked readers into installs that exist only to produce a 1-star review, which is a strange thing for an install funnel to do.

114 of the 963 say they will stop using Reddit, delete the account, uninstall, or go elsewhere. We cannot verify that any of them did.

Workarounds Reviewers Name

14 reviewers name something that got them past it. Eight say switching the browser to desktop mode, three say blocking the banner with uBlock Origin or an ad blocker, two say a private or incognito window, one says a different browser entirely.

Stops forcing the app on mobile web viewers. ANDROID USERS: Touch the 3 dots in your browser and select the "desktop site" option, and the pop-ups will stop.

To browse without an account, use an internet browser with uBlock and use its Element Zapper/Viewer tool to delete the app upsell pop up.

We have not tested any of these and none is a fix. Two reviewers in the same corpus say desktop mode stopped working for them, so treat the eight reports as a pattern with a shelf life rather than a setting.

Not Only in English

We swept 29 country and language buckets and collected 13,334 unique reviews. The UK bucket returned 600 reviews and all 600 were already in the US set, which is the rule we keep confirming: a different language makes a review new, a different English-speaking country does not.

The 25 non-English buckets returned 12,734 reviews we had not seen, 2,206 of them substantial negatives. 304 mention the browser, the site or a forcing word in their own language. Narrowing to the ones posted since 20 April that use an explicit verb for compelling someone leaves 80 across 20 languages. Our per-language patterns are not exhaustive, so read 80 as a floor, not a total.

The Italian reviewer had the app, uninstalled it because of the popup, and says so in the same sentence. The Russian reviewer describes the whole loop in two lines: the banner made him install it, so he installed it and gave it a one.

What We Are Not Claiming

That Reddit shipped this on 24 April. A review tells you when someone wrote, not when a change reached them. One reviewer on 26 April calls it A/B testing, which would mean the rollout reached different accounts on different days, and the shape of the data is consistent with that: 1 on 24 April, 33 on 28 April.

That this is why the app's rating is what it is. The app still averages 4.57 across 4.8 million lifetime ratings. 963 reviews across 201 days do not move an average that size, and we did not try to model it.

That the popup is the only complaint. It is 14.5% of substantial negatives. The other 85.5% are about ads, moderation, bots, video playback, search, account bans and the app's own bugs. This article is about one cluster, not about the app as a whole.

What This Does Not Show

Negative reviews are self-selected. Of the 22,000 reviews we pulled, 10,907 were 4 or 5 stars. Every percentage here is a share of complaints, not a share of users.

We cannot verify any individual experience. We cannot confirm that a popup appeared, that it could not be closed, or that anyone uninstalled the app afterwards.
