Discord's New UI: 115 Complaints in 3 Weeks (2026)
Discord holds 4.30 stars from 6,968,196 Google Play ratings. We read the 730 substantial negative reviews written between 3 and 23 August 2026: 115 are about the new mobile design, and 52 of those are about one button that moved into the message bar.
If you opened Discord on your phone in the first week of August 2026 and thought someone had swapped your app for a different one, the review data agrees with you. In the three weeks we read, 115 substantial negative reviews are about the new mobile design, and the single most repeated complaint is not the colours or the corners. It is one button that moved into the message bar.
Discord holds 4.30 stars from 6,968,196 Google Play ratings, with 799,515 of those ratings at one star. On iOS the same app holds 4.70 from 3,521,336 ratings. This article reads the Android store, where the redesign complaints are concentrated.
Quick Answer: What Changed in Discord's Mobile App?
Two things, and only one of them costs you anything. The visible change is shape: server icons, buttons and panels went from round to square, the theme lightened, and the font changed. The expensive change is placement: the gift Nitro button now sits in the message bar, at the spot right-handed users tap to bring up the keyboard.
Fifty-two reviews in three weeks describe that button. Thirty-one of them say they press it when they meant to start typing.
We cannot see Discord's rollout system, so treat any mechanism as inference. What is measurable is how many people reported each thing, when, and on which app version.
What We Read
We pulled the 3,000 most recent Google Play reviews from the US storefront and kept the 1,467 rated 1 to 3 stars, of which 730 have enough text to read as a report. They run from 3 to 23 August 2026, which is a very tight window on a very busy app: Discord generates enough reviews that 3,000 of them cover three weeks.
We then repeated the pull across 19 other storefronts. After removing duplicates the combined corpus is 7,500 unique reviews, 3,506 of them negative, and 1,475 long enough to categorise.
One honesty note that applies to every review corpus: stores return reviews newest first, so a raw count per day measures the collection window as much as the anger. Where a day-by-day count matters below, we say so explicitly and show the whole window.
115 of 730
We searched the 730 for two things: any mention of the gift or Nitro button and accidental taps, and any mention of the app becoming square or boxy. That returned 118 distinct candidates, and we read every one.
| What the review actually described | Reviews |
|---|---|
| The gift button's new position in the message bar | 52 |
| The new square shape language | 68 |
| Counted in both rows above, so counted once in the total | 5 |
| Off topic, eliminated (a layout bug, an idiom, an unrelated ad complaint) | 3 |
So 115 distinct reviews, or 15.8 percent of every substantial negative review in the window, are about this redesign. Of the 115, 75 are one star, 25 are two stars and 15 are three stars.
The three misses are worth naming, because they show what a keyword net does wrong: one reviewer complained the app renders in "a very small square of my screen", which is a display bug and not the shape language; one used the phrase "back to square one"; one mentioned accidental taps on emoji reactions rather than the gift button.
The Button That Moved
Of the 52, 38 name the location precisely: the message bar, the text field, the typing space, or the icon next to the send or emoji button. Thirty-one describe pressing it when they meant to do something else. The description is close to identical from reviewer to reviewer, which is what a placement problem looks like as opposed to a taste problem.
I freaking HATE HATE HATE where the gift button is on the new layout!! They placed it right where you used to tap to start typing a message, so now every time I go to type something it brings up the gift menu instead.
They've moved the nitro button deliberately into a place where you click it all the time by accident. This won't make me but nitro. Half the time when I click the text box I click the little present instead. Move it back
Updating my previous response: All issues before were resolved but now they put the nitro gift button exactly where I press to type in the chat box. Me accidentally pressing the button isn't going to want to make me send money to give someone Nitro.
The gift nitro button is exactly where my thumb goes to start typing in the text box. Very annoying. I want to type, not gift nitro.
After the recent UI update the "gift nitro" button covers so much of the text box that I accidentally click it multiple times a day.
this update has some fixes but the GIFT BUTTON IS HORRIBLE and hides half of the chat bar, evertime i want to write a message i end up clicking on it instead.
The reason it lands in that exact spot comes up again and again: it is where a thumb rests.
Please move/remove the gift nitro button, I click it every single time I switch to the app and try press the message field. What terrible placement, every right handed person will automatically click there as that's the natural position for your thumb on the screen. absolutely terrible change to the app.
The typing bar is too crowded with icons. Please remove the send gift icon. It's useless and I always hit it by accident because it's the farthest my thumb can comfortably reach to tap the typing bar. please remove it. pleaseeee
The new layout for the text bar specifically is incredibly inconvenient, the gift icon has been moved in the exact space I, and likely many other right handed users, typically click to open the typing bar.
new mobile ui is super cluttered, you can't open the chat box to type with a right thumb anymore because of the nitro gift box
PLEASE REMOVE THE GIFT ICON ON THE TEXT LINE!!! I am SHORT. I have SHORT FINGERS. I KEEP PRESSING IT AND IT IS DRIVING ME INSANE.
Update: Despite bug fixes, UI continues to suffer new issues that only exist because of unnecessary changes. Nearly impossible to type with one hand without accidentally hitting the gift button now, I've nearly sent a gift on accident about 30 times.
That last one is the number that makes the point: nearly thirty near misses, from one person, on one button, in a few weeks.
Five of the 52 say they already pay for Nitro. That is a small number, but it undercuts the obvious commercial reading of the placement, because these are people the button cannot convert.
I enjoy discord as a messaging app but the navigation can be frustrating at times. mainly, why is the nitro gift button in the text hotbar? people are not regularly gifting nitro so there is genuinely ZERO reason for the nitro gift button to share the same space as the image and gif buttons.
Remove the gift button on the damn chat bar. I will literally never gift anyone and if I wanted to I'd find out. I keep hitting it. This is pretty much hostile UX
The Shapes
The other 68 are about the visual language: round icons became square, the dark theme got lighter, and the type changed weight.
They updated the app and now everything is an ugly and off putting square style UI. They changed the fonts as well and thinned the text size. It genuinely makes me sick.
DISCORDDD PLEASE CHANGE THE ICON UI BACK TO CIRCLE WHEN YOU'RE NOT CLICKING ON IT ON MOBILE PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE I LOVE THE CIRCLE TURNING INTO SQUARE ANIMATION WHENEVER I CLICKED ON A SERVER BUT NOW IT'S ALL SQUAREEEE NO MATTER WHAT
The new UI update is god awful, the colour of themes changed so dark isn't the same dark as before. everything is so boxy and buttons are moved slightly so that your previous muscle memory makes you click the wrong thing. worst of all you can't revert it whatsoever there's no option
changing my previous review to say this new ui is ABYSMAL. its like someone took the concepts of corporations and capitalism, everything is boxy and bold and physically uncomfortable to look at.
I have put up with a lot of stupid ui updates, but they recently made everything square and noe it feels so hostile and unpleasant and i just cant stand it anymore.
Taste complaints are the easiest thing in the world to dismiss, and mostly they should be. Two details in this set are not taste. The first is that 16 of the 115 ask for a setting rather than a reversal, which is a different request from "I hate it".
Please pick how the app is going to look or at least make it customizable. Why is everything suddenly square? It looks genuinely awful. Please make it so people can choose to keep everything rounded if they want to.
why is everything a square now this is genuinely just so unnecessary of a change change it back or allow us to change it via a setting at least this is horrible
The second is muscle memory, which is where shape and placement meet.
I truly like using Discord to message friends and connect with others in my community, but I'm frustrated by frequent UI changes. It feels like every couple of months, a menu is moved around, the UI is shuffled, and things get harder to find buried in many swipe gestures. More recently, an update came out that overhauled the UI and changed the nice round icons and buttons into square. They also moved the Nitro gift button to be exactly where the mobile text box used to be. pls stop omg.
The new UI is.. okay. The text bar. I click on it, the text box doesn't go up so I can't even see what I'm typing. I tap on a message by accident, and it acts as if I held it!
The Version Test
Google Play records the app version the reviewer had installed when they wrote. Because the rollout was staggered, our three weeks contain people on the old build and people on the new build writing on the same days. That is a natural control group, and it is the strongest evidence in this article.
| Installed version | Substantial negative reviews | About the redesign |
|---|---|---|
| 339.11 | 66 | 6 (9.1%) |
| 340.13 | 308 | 86 (27.9%) |
| 341.13 | 203 | 8 (3.9%) |
| No version recorded | 106 | 11 (10.4%) |
On 340.13, more than one in four negative reviews is about the redesign. On the build before it, and on the build after it, it is under one in ten.
The daily counts line up. Complaints about the square shape do not exist in our window before 5 August, spike on 7 August, and stop after 18 August. The overall volume of substantial negative reviews follows the same curve: 12 on 3 August, 29 on the 4th, then 68, 92 and 105 on the 5th, 6th and 7th, then back down.
There is one caveat we will not paper over. Six reviewers on build 339.11 also describe the new look, and one asks how to leave "whatever design test group I've been put in". That suggests at least part of the change arrived server side rather than with the app binary, which means the version column is a good signal and not a perfect one.
how do I get out of whatever design test group I've been put in. 😭 the new UI with the square boxes, the icons on the opposite side, and the navy blue text box is absolutely hideous. who approved that design?
What Did Not Move
A spike is only interesting next to a baseline. We ran the same window against four chronic Discord complaints, as a share of each period's substantial negative reviews.
| Complaint cluster | 3 to 4 Aug | 5 to 7 Aug | 8 to 15 Aug | 16 to 23 Aug |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Cannot send a photo or video | 5% | 4% | 5% | 6% |
| Crashes, freezes, black screen | 2% | 2% | 4% | 3% |
| Account banned or disabled | 5% | 3% | 6% | 6% |
| Substantial negative reviews in period | 41 | 265 | 236 | 188 |
Flat, flat, flat. Whatever happened in the first week of August did not break photo uploads and did not start banning people. It changed the interface, and the interface is what people wrote about.
That is also the honest limit of the finding: the redesign is not Discord's biggest problem, it is the loudest one of that fortnight. The photo sending complaint has been there the whole time at a steady one in twenty.
That Week, the Update Was the Whole Conversation
Here is the cleanest number in the piece. We took every substantial negative review that is not in our redesign set, and asked how many of them still use update or interface language.
- On 3 and 4 August, before the change, that was 1 of 41 reviews, or 2 percent.
- On 5, 6 and 7 August, excluding the 68 redesign reviews already counted, it was 72 of 197, or 37 percent.
- From 16 to 23 August, same exclusion, it was back to 15 of 180, or 8 percent.
Adding those back in, roughly 53 percent of the substantial negative reviews written on 5, 6 and 7 August are about the update in some form. Two days earlier it was one review in forty.
It Is Not Just the US
We ran the same two searches across the other storefronts and found 52 candidates outside the US, of which 48 describe the same two changes, across 13 storefronts. Four were eliminated on reading: two about purchases and regional restrictions, one about a hacked account, one about voice reliability.
The gift button complaint travels intact, in the same words, in whatever language the reviewer writes in.

Several reviewers in non-English storefronts wrote in English, and they are the bluntest of the set about what they think the placement is for.
you know exactly what you did when you put the "gift nitro" button exactly under where a right thumb would touch the screen to click onto the chat bar.
new interface and UI are terrible, putting "gift nitro" button right where people supposed to press to enter text is the most greedy scum behavior that only leads to frustration and more hat towards app.
After the update I cannot get used to the new layout. Putting the gift icon almost in the middle of the text field is a cheap way to get people to click it.
This latest update placed the Nitro button right above the chat bar, which is really inconvenient for users. It’s really annoying to accidentally tap it while typing.
The gift button is very conveniently placed where I'd tap to use the keyboard. Conveniently for you, i accidentally gifted Nitro to 67 people. 😎👍
The shape complaint travels too, including into scripts where "square" is the whole review.

Discord Did Not Move the Button Back
This is where a version chart can mislead, so we checked it directly. The redesign complaint share collapses on build 341.13, but the gift button is still in the message bar there: seven reviews in our set were written by people running 341.13, the most recent on 21 August.
I agree with another rating I saw, I really dislike the gift option being in the text bar now, I keep accidentally clicking it. very frustrating
the UI. the gift nitro button is far too close to the centre of the message box. it is too easy to hit the button now when I just want to use the chat function.
Developers changed the UI and placed the GIFT NITRO button right where people used to tap to open the chat, for people to accidentally spend money on it. Disgusting move.
So what fell is the share of reviews mentioning it, not the thing itself. Two explanations fit the data equally well: people got used to it, or the population still writing reviews by mid August had already said their piece. We cannot separate those two from review text alone, and we are not going to pretend otherwise. What we can say is that nothing in the 341.13 reviews describes the button going away.
The new update is terrible. No one asked for it, millions of people hate it, and they're just ignoring them saying reverting isn't possible which is... stupid. Of course it's possible.
What You Can Actually Do
There is no toggle. That is the short version, and it is why 25 of the 115 reviews are asking for a revert rather than reporting a bug. What is left is damage control.
- Slow down the first tap. The reports are dominated by muscle memory, not by misreading the screen, so the mis-taps stop when you stop aiming at the old target and start aiming at the empty space in the bar.
- If you type one handed on a large phone, the gift button sits in the natural right thumb arc. Reviewers who switched to two hands or to tapping further left report the problem going away by itself.
- If you do open the gift sheet by accident, nothing is bought until you confirm and pay. Across the whole corpus exactly one reviewer claims a charge went through, and they are plainly joking. Every other report stops at the sheet opening, so the cost here is interruption rather than money.
- Version numbers matter if you report it. Discord replies to reviews, and the useful report names your build, the phone, and what you were trying to tap. "The new UI is bad" is not actionable; "on 341.13, the gift icon is under my thumb at the left edge of the bar" is.
- If the light theme is the part that hurts, check the theme setting rather than uninstalling. Several reviewers here describe the app following the phone's theme after the update, which is a setting and not a bug.
What We Are Not Saying
We are not saying most Discord users dislike the redesign. This corpus contains only negative reviews by construction. An app with nearly seven million ratings can generate 115 angry reviews in three weeks and still be fine with almost everybody.
We are also not claiming the placement is deliberate. Many reviewers assert that it is; assertions are not evidence, and we counted them as complaints rather than as findings.
What the data does support is narrower: in the week of 5 August 2026, Discord's mobile redesign became the single largest topic in the app's negative reviews, the gift button was the most specific complaint inside it, and the chronic problems around it did not move at all.
