Steam Guard Lockout: 45 Reviews, 12 Languages (2026)

By Unstar · Editorial Team

Steam's mobile app holds 3.11 stars on Google Play and 2.64 on the App Store. We read 887 substantial negative reviews spanning six months and hand-verified the 45 describing the same circle: the app asks for a code that only the app you cannot open can produce.

The Steam mobile app has one job that nothing else can do for you: it is the Steam Guard authenticator. Its reviews are dominated by people who cannot get into it, and the reason they give is circular. The app asks for a code, and the only place that code exists is inside the app.

Steam holds 3.11 stars from 1,078,731 Google Play ratings. 413,951 of those, or 38.4 percent, are one star, which is an extraordinarily heavy bottom for an app with more than 100 million installs. The iOS version, listed as Steam Mobile, is rated 2.64 from 11,876 ratings. Both stores agree, which is rare.

What We Read

We pulled the 3,000 most recent US English Google Play reviews. 2,107 were one to three stars, and 887 of those ran at least 120 characters, our bar for a review that describes something. Those 887 cover 9 February to 21 August 2026, a little over six months, which makes this a longer window than most app review sets we build.

407 of the 887, or 45.9 percent, mention signing in. That share barely moves month to month: 43.8 percent in February, 46.8 in March, 44.1 in April, 45.5 in May, 50.3 in June, 44.4 in July, 43.9 in August. It is not a bad week or a bad build. It is the steady state.

45 Reviews Describe the Same Locked Door

Inside those 407, one specific failure keeps recurring. A keyword net combining authenticator language, inability language, and sign-in language returned 73 candidates. We read all 73 and confirmed 45 where the reviewer is locked out of their account and the thing standing in the way is a code that only the app they cannot open can produce.

The 28 we dropped break down like this:

  • six were server or connection errors on the sign-in screen
  • six were other login failures with a different cause, including the email code path, QR scanning, camera permissions, and a game redirect loop
  • five were Steam Guard setup failing with an error, so the authenticator was never working in the first place
  • four described being signed in but told to sign in, or being unable to sign out
  • four were objections to Steam Guard existing, or reviewers who removed it and moved on
  • three were the app crashing on launch or on the approve screen

45 out of 887 is 5.1 percent of substantial negatives and 11.1 percent of the sign-in cluster. It appears in every month of the window, from two in February to eleven in June.

What the Loop Actually Sounds Like

We are not paraphrasing. This is how reviewers describe it themselves.

To log into the Steam android app, the app is telling me I need a steam guard code from the steam Android app. But to get the code I first need to log into the steam Android app. Can anyone see the problem here?

Need the Code to Access the Code?! I can't log in without the app code, and I can't access the code without a code from the app I need a code to log into.

Asked me to download the app to sign in on my pc. The app then tells me to use the app to sign into the app using a code sent to the app that I have to be logged into the app to see but can't login to the app without a code? Is this some random programmer's version of a joke?

how on earth are you supposed to sign in to this app if it asks for a code you can't give because you can't get in to the stupid app.

One reviewer states the structural problem in a single sentence, and it is the most accurate description in the set:

This App Is Steam Guard. God help you if you get logged out and forget your password. If this happens, since the app itself IS how you authenticate, then authentication is essentially impossible without a support ticket. This needs to be rectified.

The Four Doors People Fall Through

Nobody gets into the loop by choosing to. Something first removes their session, and only then does the circle close. Across the 45, four entry points account for almost all of it, and they overlap.

Entry pointReviews
New, lost, reset, or reinstalled device15
Logged out on its own9
Forgot the password, tried to reset it8
Recovery code by SMS or email never arrived4

The largest is a new phone. Fifteen of the 45, a third of the set, describe changing, losing, resetting, or reinstalling on a device, then discovering that the authenticator lives on the device they no longer have.

UPDATE 15/8/26 App got better but now they have broken things again. Got new phone so have to log in again however as I have 2FA enabled using Steam guard enabled , I CANNOT LOG IN AS IT WANTS ME TO USE THE AUTHENTICATOR WHICH I CANNOT DO UNTIL I LOG IN WHICH I CANNOT DO AS IT NEEDS STEAMGUARD Whoever decided this was a good idea needs taking outside and putting out of our misery.

Downloaded the app for steam guard authenticator. After some time, I was auto signed out due to inactivity I suppose (I use Steam on my PC not my phone lol). Tried signing back in, but was required to go through steam guard on my phone, which had signed me out. Tried to remove the guard so I could sign in and re-enable, but I need the "old device". There is no old device.

after i downloaded steam on mobile and logged in, the one on my pc was logged out and i need a "steam mobile app authenticator" it was fine until i lost the phone that i put the mobile steam account in, after that i can't log into my account anymore, i tried removing but the code for the mobile authenticator did not work and i tried many ways but i still can't log in. I'm in utter dissapointment of the steam mobile app.

Nine describe being signed out without doing anything. This is the version that catches people who never intended to touch their setup at all.

While the app is good but when I did set 2fa through this app i got logged out automatically and now I can't log in, can't change my password, can't add phone number because everything is asking for authentication code which I don't have as I am logged out and I am stuck.

Got logged out of my steam app randomly with steam authenticator active and despite entering the password that should work I'm not able to sign back in.

Eight tried to reset a forgotten password and found the reset gated behind the same app. Password recovery is the standard escape hatch from any account lockout, and in these reviews it leads back to the locked door.

What is wrong with steam? I have tried resetting my password 3 times and all it let's me do is remove my authenticator, and to reset my password it wants to send an authenticator to my mobile app.... I can't log into to the mobile app so how am I supposed to reset my password?? I dont understand why this is so hard.

Steam is excellent on my PC, but for some reason it keeps signing me out on my phone and tablet, and since I can't remember my password, it is literally impossible to sign back in due to how ridiculous their authenticator is.

Four say the fallback code never arrived. SMS and email are supposed to be the way out when the authenticator is unreachable, and in these four they are not.

I am locked out after deleting the Steam app. I need to remove my Mobile Authenticator, but SMS recovery codes are never delivered to my phone. When I try to use the "Contact Support" link to prove ownership, the page fails with "Error loading this form." I'm stuck in a loop where I can't log in and the recovery tools are broken. I have purchase receipts and my account name to prove ownership, but the system won't let me submit a ticket. Please fix this support portal loop.

The Support Door Is Inside the House Too

Ten of the 45 mention Steam Support or a ticket. Two of them point out something specific: on mobile, the route to help runs through the app you are trying to get into.

you can't login because steam has a built in authenticator app for 2 step verification and it doesn't work you can't login and there's no way to contact steam support if your not logged in in the app.

Getting out is not free either. One reviewer describes escaping the loop by deleting the authenticator, which cost them a fifteen day hold and the trading cards they were trying to sell:

logs me out at random, and God forbid I forget my password. I jumped through every stupid hoop, had to delete my authenticator to make a new password, and now that I have access to the app, I cant log in on my pc because of the password attempt limit being reached. the whole point of this was to sell some of my trading cards, but because Im locked out on my pc, I cant sell through the app, AND because I had to delete and reinstall the authenticator, I have to wait 15 days!!!!

Twelve Languages, One Loop

We scanned 13 more storefronts, which brought the merged corpus to 9,500 unique reviews. We did not build a matched keyword list per language, so these are not comparable percentages. They are evidence that this is not a US quirk or a translation problem. In six of these languages the reviewer spells out the circle exactly as the English reviewers do.

The Play Listing Has Not Changed Since 5 March

This is the fact that reframes everything above. The Google Play listing for Steam was last updated on 5 March 2026. The App Store listing for Steam Mobile was last updated on 6 March 2026, both at version 3.10.9. Of the 407 sign-in reviews, 268 are tagged 3.10.9 and 39 are tagged 3.10.7, with the rest carrying no version at all.

So the complaints in this article are not a report on a bad update that has since been fixed. They describe the version that is shipping today, and they have been arriving continuously for the five and a half months since it shipped.

What We Are Not Claiming

Two step authentication is genuinely good, and an authenticator that is hard to move between devices is hard to steal, which is the entire point. Several reviewers in this set say so themselves before complaining. We are not arguing that Steam Guard should be weaker.

Three things are outside what review text can establish:

  • how many people set up the authenticator, never think about it again, and never write a review, which is certainly the large majority
  • whether any individual reviewer had a recovery code available and missed it
  • how long Steam Support actually takes, since reviews only capture people still waiting

What review text does establish is that the escape hatches people reach for first, password reset, SMS fallback, and support, are described as leading back into the same room, in twelve languages, across seven months, on one unchanged version.

Step 1: Do It in a Desktop Browser, Not the App

Several reviewers report that the Steam website works while the mobile app does not, including one who says the browser signs in perfectly while the app rejects the same correct password. Account recovery runs at help.steampowered.com and does not need the mobile app to load. Start there, on a machine you are already signed in on if you have one.

Step 2: Find the Recovery Code Before You Touch Anything

When the mobile authenticator is set up, Steam issues a recovery code to be saved separately. Reviewers who still had theirs got out; reviewers who did not are the ones writing these reviews. Check your email archive, your password manager, and any screenshot folder from the day you enabled it, before you start clicking through recovery flows.

Step 3: Use the Remove Authenticator Path, Not the Login Path

The login screen is the closed side of the circle. The path that is open is the one that removes the authenticator from the account, which is available from account help without a working code. Reviewers who reached it describe it working. Reviewers who kept retrying the login screen describe hours lost.

Step 4: Expect a Waiting Period, and Plan Around It

Removing or re-adding the authenticator carries a hold. The reviewer above names fifteen days, and during it their Steam Market and trading activity was blocked. If you have an item sale, a gift, or a family purchase depending on the account, assume it is not happening this week.

Step 5: If You Are Still Stuck, File From a Signed-Out Browser

Two reviewers describe a support portal that will not accept a ticket from someone who cannot sign in. The support site is reachable signed out. Include your account name, the email on the account, and a purchase receipt with a transaction number, which is what the reviewers who describe proving ownership say they were asked for.

The Short Version

The Steam mobile app is not failing at being a store. It is failing at the one function that has no substitute, and it fails in a way that gets worse the more securely you set it up. 45 reviewers in six months describe the same shape: something ends the session, the code is on the other side, and the doors marked exit lead back to the same corridor.
