Netflix Cast Button Gone: 103 Reviews, 10 Days (2026)

By Unstar · Editorial Team

Netflix holds 4.41 stars from 16,109,794 Google Play ratings. We read 2,186 substantial negative reviews from a continuous 103 day run and hand-verified 103 about casting. In the week of 7 September they were 25.0% of every complaint Netflix received, and one build carries 41.4% of its own complaints on this subject alone. Four reviewers report the button came back, and Dutch, Swedish and Czech reviewers date an earlier device cutoff to the first days of December 2025.

On 9 September 2026, seventeen people opened Netflix on a phone to put something on a television, and the cast icon was not there. The next day, sixteen more. Some restarted the phone. Some rebooted the Chromecast. Some cleared the cache and reinstalled. Several checked whether YouTube still cast to the same device, and it did.

Netflix holds 4.41 stars from 16,109,794 Google Play ratings. 1,631,174 of those are one star, and 2,389,958 of them, 14.8% of everything the store has counted, are 1 to 3 stars. On the App Store the same service holds 4.75 from 7,306,579 ratings, a gap of 0.34 stars between the two versions of the same product.

Quick Answer: Why Did the Netflix Cast Button Disappear?

Because of a build. We pulled the 24,000 most recent US Google Play reviews on 21 September 2026, a continuous run from 11 June covering 103 days with no gap, filtered to 2,186 substantial 1-3 star complaints, and hand-verified 103 about casting. In the week beginning 7 September those 103 reviews make up 25.0% of every substantial complaint Netflix received, against 0.9% to 3.9% in each of the thirteen weeks before it. Version 9.82.0 carries 41.4% of its own complaints on this one subject; no other build with at least 30 substantial negatives goes above 6.8%. Four reviewers on the next build, 9.83.0, report the button came back, and the newest build in our window carries none of these complaints at all. Underneath that spike sit two older and slower complaints that use exactly the same words: a device cutoff reviewers date to 1 December 2025, and a plan rule that ties casting to what you pay.

How We Read These Reviews

We pulled the 24,000 most recent US Google Play reviews for Netflix on 21 September 2026, along with the live store metadata. Those reviews run from 11 June to 21 September 2026, 103 days, with at least one review on every single day and no gap anywhere in the range. 6,819 of them were 1 to 3 stars, and 2,186 of those were substantial, meaning 120 characters or more of actual writing rather than a bare "fix it". 70.9% of the substantial negatives were one star.

The obvious search is wrong, and it is worth showing why. Searching the substantial negatives for the letters c-a-s-t returns 118 reviews. Seven of those are not about casting at all: a hotel in Lancaster, three podcasts, two mentions of Castlevania, and one reviewer discussing broadcasters. A word boundary on the term drops those and leaves 111.

Then we read all 111. Eight more came out. Five describe casting that works but misbehaves: four lose the connection mid episode and one cannot reach the playback controls because they sit off the edge of the screen. Those are different complaints with different causes. One says casting is "generally buggy" without claiming it is gone. One is a truck driver unhappy with the picture quality when he mirrors. One writes "pod casts" as two words, which slips past a word boundary. That leaves 103 verified reviews, 4.7% of every substantial complaint in the window.

85 of the 103, 82.5%, are one star, against 70.9% for the corpus as a whole. That gap is not anger about a missing feature. It is what a review looks like when the app still charges you and no longer does the one thing you used it for.

The Week the Button Vanished

Here is the whole shape of it, by week, as a share of all substantial complaints Netflix received in that week.

24 August31292.3%
31 August51593.1%
7 September5622425.0%
14 September51673.0%

The thirteen weeks from 8 June to 31 August never go above 3.9% and never below 0.9%. Then one week takes a quarter of everything. Day by day it is sharper still: 8 on 8 September, 17 on 9 September, 16 on 10 September, 8 on 11 September, 3 on 12 September, and one or two a day after that.

Versions tell the same story without any interpretation from us. Every Netflix build in the corpus with at least 30 substantial negative reviews, ordered by volume:

One build out of eleven carries four out of every ten of its own complaints on a single subject. Reviewers name the date themselves: several point at an update they received on 2 September 2026.

Casting, even to "approved" devices no longer works, as of the latest version 9.82.0. Previous version worked fine, but now I can no longer cast to Gen 3 Chromecasts

Great app for years... until Netflix decided to remove the cast button for old-gen hardware. Two days ago it worked, then it didn't. No notice (as usual); I have to spend time searching for the explanation.

They Checked. It Was Not Their Network.

The most useful thing about this cluster is that the people writing it did the diagnosis for us.

Fifteen of the 103 name another app that still cast fine on the same hardware, on the same evening. The apps they name are Prime Video, Hulu, Disney, HBO, Peacock, Tubi, YouTube and YouTube Music. Not one of them reports a Chromecast that stopped working for everything.

Whatever they did with the most recent update, broke the Chromecast ability from the app. The cast icon is gone no matter what I tried (uninstall and reinstall, clear data and cache, reboot phone, reboot Chromecast) To be clear, the same phone and same Chromecast on the same home WiFi was working just fine prior to this update so no, it is not a "network discovery" problem or firewall or any network related issue.

As others have reported, the latest version broke Casting. Other apps still cast fine, seems to be Netflix specifically.

Four reviewers went further and tested the app version itself. Our first pattern for this returned seven, but three were false positives: two people using "downgrade" as a figure of speech about the service, and one describing an older model of Chromecast rather than an older app. The real number is four, and what they found is the cleanest evidence in the corpus.

Netflix 9.82.0 on my Pixel 10a running Android 17 has lost the Cast button completely. Chromecast works perfectly with YouTube, YouTube Music and Tubi, and Netflix casts normally from another phone on the same network. I downgraded Netflix to 9.69.0 and the Cast button immediately returned and works perfectly.

That review names the broken build, the working build it rolled back to, three other apps that were casting normally at the time, and a second phone on the same network where Netflix cast without trouble. It is a better bug report than most bug reports.

Netflix Support Gave Four Different Answers

Five of the 103 reviewers describe what happened when they asked Netflix. They did not get one answer.

The cast button disappeared from my Netflix app in the past 48hours and I have been advised by the support team that this function is no longer supported.

No longer able to cast from phone. Customer service tells me it's due to bug on android update and will pass the problem to the tech people. That's the last I heard. Still can't cast.

newest (9/2/26) update removed the ability to cast to my older generation Chromecast, even though I am currently paying for the premium no-ad service. needs to be addressed, customer service claims to be aware of the "bug"

They have removed support for my Chromecast (the older version without a remote), even though their support says it should be there. No cast icon. This has happened after the latest update (Sept. 2nd, 2026). I did restart both the phone and Chromecast, and nothing.

One was told the function is no longer supported. One was told it is a bug in an Android update, and was never contacted again. One was told the company is aware of the bug, in quotation marks, which is the reviewer's punctuation and not ours. Two were reading help pages that said their device was supported while the app disagreed. That is five people and three different explanations inside one week. Abroad it gets a fourth: a French reviewer was told to wait for the next update without a date, and a Japanese reviewer was told the same thing in the form of a version mismatch.

Our count here needs a caveat we will give plainly: a broad search for the word "support" returns thirteen of the 103, but eight of those are using it in the sense of "Chromecast support disappeared". Five actually contacted Netflix and reported back.

Before September, "I Can't Cast" Meant Something Else

Strip out the September spike and the remaining 42 reviews are not about a bug at all.

Nine of the 103 tie casting to which plan you are paying for, and all nine are dated before 7 September. They say the cast button does not exist on the ad-supported or basic tier, that Netflix quoted them a higher price to get it back, and in one case that a carrier bundle came without it.

I recently discovered that I can no longer cast Netflix from my phone to my Chromecast on the ad-supported plan. I understand there may be plan differences, but removing a core playback feature significantly changes how I use the service.

The only app out of MANY that makes you get a $20 plan just for casting. Casting automatically comes with EVERY other app. I'm only keeping them for 1 month.

This matters for anyone searching the problem right now, because these two complaints produce the same sentence and have opposite fixes. If the button vanished from an app that used to have it, that is a build. If it was never there on a plan you recently changed, no update will bring it back.

The Wave Nobody Outside the US Talks About

We then swept 32 more storefront and language buckets. Seven of them returned only reviews we already had, which is the store duplication effect you get in English speaking markets. The other 25 produced 32,459 reviews we had not seen and 4,376 substantial negatives, in which 126 casting complaints appear across 13 storefronts.

The monthly series in those buckets has two peaks, not one, and the earlier one is bigger.

Comparing months across buckets is only fair if the buckets cover the months, so we restricted this to the 13 buckets whose reviews reach back before October 2025. In those 13, casting complaints run at 0% to 3.5% of substantial negatives through the summer of 2025, then hit 8.9% in November 2025 and 18.0% in December 2025, 22 reviews out of 122. Dutch and Swedish reviewers put a date on it themselves.

The exact date appears twice. One reviewer in the Dutch store writes, in English, "They removed the cast button per december 1, 2025." And on 9 September 2026, a US reviewer who had just lost his own button worked out the connection without any help from Netflix:

Chromecast button disappeared yesterday. I just found out that netflix removed support for modern chromecasts with remote control 9 months or so ago. They didn't say they would stop support for the old ones without remote. Hope this is a bug.

Two independent groups of reviewers, nine months and several languages apart, describing a device cutoff in the first week of December 2025 that Netflix's newer Chromecast owners felt then and its older Chromecast owners felt in September.

Four Reviews Say It Came Back

Our filter only reads 1 to 3 star reviews, which means the end of this story lives in reviews we would normally never open. We went and looked.

Four reviewers raised their rating to four or five stars to report that casting returned, and every one of them is on build 9.83.0, dated between 12 and 16 September.

Can't cast from my phone after the latest update even though we have a compatible Chromecast and Netflix plan. 9/14: raising the rating. they fixed the casting issue and it's back in the app.

UPDATE: I just went to the app to cancel my subscription & noticed the casting icon is back on.

That second one had opened the app to cancel. The complaint curve agrees with them: the daily count falls from 17 to single figures after 11 September, 9.83.0 carries 5.6%, and 9.84.0 carries none out of 33. We will not call that a confirmed fix, because review data cannot see a changelog. We will say that every signal we can measure points the same way, and that if your cast button is still missing today the first thing to check is your app version.

Who This Actually Hit

The people who wrote these 103 reviews are not casual casters. Eight of them say their television cannot run the Netflix app at all, which is the entire reason the Chromecast is plugged into it. One had to fall back to an HDMI cable. One travels for work and carries a Chromecast to hotels and rentals. One casts because the screen on their phone is cracked.

Cannot cast to my 1st gen chrome cast anymore as of this week, screen mirroring is not allowed and my tv is too old to add an app. Have to use hdmi to be able to use it. This app is worthless to me.

it stopped allowing casting to my Chromecast. my TV is too old to install the netflix app. what is the point? absolutely fuming. I will have to cancel my subscription. wth.

22 of the 103 say they have cancelled, are cancelling, or will if it is not restored. One of them lists casting as one of three reasons, so treat that number as a ceiling rather than an attribution. And one review captures the rollout better than any version table:

Took the ability to cast away, now I can't watch it on my tv. My husband still has the button on his phone, but once his goes I guess we have to cancel which sucks :(

Her husband's phone still had the button. That is what a staged release looks like from a sofa.

The Same Complaint in Eight Languages

The September wave was not a US event. These are from the same week, in the stores where Chromecast is common.

The German reviewer lists the diagnosis in order: cast symbol gone after the last update, several Chromecast devices affected, Prime Video and YouTube still working on the same hardware, cache cleared. The Japanese reviewer was told by the help centre that the versions did not match and to wait for an update. The Portuguese reviewer is describing the plan rule rather than the bug, which is the same split we found in the US corpus, in a market where it is easier to see because no other service does it.

If Your Cast Button Is Still Missing

Four things, in the order the corpus supports them.

Update the Netflix app first, because the four recovery reports in this corpus are all on a build later than the one that broke it, and nothing else in these 103 reviews produced a fix. Then check whether another app can still cast to the same device, which is the test fifteen reviewers ran and the fastest way to tell an app problem from a network one. If other apps cast and Netflix does not, reinstalling and clearing the cache will not help, because four people here did exactly that and reported back. And if the button was never there rather than newly gone, look at your plan before you look at your app, because nine reviewers found the answer there.
