Is Etsy Still Handmade? 73 of 264 Complaints Say No (2026)

By Unstar · Editorial Team

Etsy holds 4.85 stars from 2,175,701 Google Play ratings. We read 264 substantial negative reviews from a ten week window and confirmed 73 that say the catalog is AI images, drop shipping and resale rather than handmade work. The share rose from 19.3% in June to 32.0% in August.

Etsy's own Play Store listing calls it "Shop from Real People." That line is doing a lot of work in the negative reviews.

Etsy holds 4.85 stars from 2,175,701 Google Play ratings on more than 50 million installs, and 1,959,100 of those ratings, 90.0% of them, are five stars. On the App Store the same app holds 4.93 from 7,251,243 ratings. By the numbers this is one of the best rated shopping apps in either store. The negative reviews are not really about the app at all.

Quick Answer: Do Buyers Still Think Etsy Is Handmade?

A large and growing share of them do not. We pulled the 3,000 most recent US Google Play reviews on 28 August 2026, filtered to 264 substantial 1-3 star complaints, and confirmed 73 that say the catalog is no longer what the brand promises: AI-generated listing images, drop shipping and resale instead of handmade work. That is 27.7% of every real complaint in the window, and it is the single largest theme by a wide margin. Sixty-one of the 73 name AI directly. The share is rising: 19.3% of substantial complaints in June, 27.9% in July, 32.0% in August.

How We Read These Reviews

We pulled the 3,000 most recent US Google Play reviews for Etsy on 28 August 2026, along with the live store metadata. The developer is Etsy, Inc, the build was 7.92.0, updated 24 August 2026, and the listing declares no ads and no in-app purchases.

Because Etsy collects reviews quickly, those 3,000 reviews cover a short window: 17 June to 28 August 2026, roughly ten weeks. Of them, 441 were 1-3 stars. We kept the ones long enough to describe something, 120 characters or more, which left 264 substantial negative reviews.

From that pool we pulled every review mentioning AI, drop shipping, resale, mass production, handmade, artisans, or the marketplaces buyers compare Etsy to. That produced 84 candidates. Reading them one at a time, 11 were about something else: app storage, a suspended seller account, the review window, ad placement, a single late refund. That is a 13.1% false-positive rate on the keyword search, which is exactly why the search is not the finding. What is left is 73 confirmed reviews.

Forty-eight of the 73 are one-star, 17 are two-star and eight are three-star. The three-star ones are worth noticing, because they are not written by people who hate Etsy. They are written by people who still shop there and are describing a change.

What the 73 Reviews Actually Say

Signal inside the 73Reviews
Names AI listings, AI images or AI-written text61
Names drop shipping, resellers, mass production or print on demand23
Asks for a filter, a label, a block button, or says reporting does nothing19
Compares Etsy to Temu, AliExpress, Amazon, Walmart or "China"17
About craft patterns specifically (crochet, knitting, sewing, downloads)13

Those categories overlap on purpose. A single review often names AI images, then names Temu, then asks for a filter. The point of the table is not to partition the reviews, it is to show which words keep coming back.

One number in that table needs a footnote, because it is the kind of thing that quietly turns into a wrong sentence. The craft-pattern regex returns 15 matches, not 13. Two of them matched the letters "sew" inside the word "elsewhere." The real count is 13.

1. The AI Complaint (61 Reviews)

This is the core of it. Reviewers are not describing a bug, a crash or a fee. They are describing a catalog they no longer trust to be made by a person.

can't find what need I because it's all AI copies the "real human" stuff they claim to love. I can't trust Etsy anymore. they're allowing all the AI slop because it's profitable and I think that's gross.

what was once a place to find art and support artists has turned into an AI slop fest. you can no longer find human artists among the duplicate AI slop accounts.

it's heartbreaking. I used to love Etsy, it was one of my favorite places to shop, but it's just dead now. They do nothing to police AI or scammers, so the whole platform has become a minefield of fake content.

Filled with fake Ai products. I love etsy. I've gotten some amazing products from very talented creators. but Etsy is not doing enough to combat the ai product listings.

The most concrete version of the complaint is not philosophical. It is about the photo not matching the object that arrives.

This app is garbage. Shops should NOT be allowed to use AI to represent the items they're selling. There's nothing more irritating than seeing a product you like, swiping left on the product photos, and seeing the actual item looks NOTHING like it's advertised.

Used to be great for handmade items but has been ruined by AI. Sellers use AI generated images & then create items that are somewhere between "almost close" to "you gotta be kidding me".

they're allowing AI generated images for items being sold. it makes it impossible to see what is real and what is not.

Several reviewers report doing the platform's moderation work themselves, at volume, and watching nothing happen.

dying platform - used to love this app. nowadays it's impossible to find genuine products because the search results are polluted with fake AI listings. I've reported over a hundred fake listings and Etsy very very rarely takes action.

If you like wasting money, Etsy's for you! They don't review listing reports so AI scammers are free to take as they please.

And a recurring, specific grievance: reviewers say Etsy's own marketing is the thing that makes this feel like a broken promise rather than a market shift.

you advertise that humans create everything but then let ai invade it and ruin it all, this app is no longer people creating things, it's ai stealing real people's creations and selling them to make more fake stuff and push real people out...

I love Etsy for all the artists and entrepreneurs that put in effort to sell great products, but it should be mandatory if a seller is using AI for art, it is unacceptable that 80% of pages are filled with it now

2. The Craft-Pattern Trap (13 Reviews)

Of all the complaints in this corpus, this is the one with a clean mechanism, real money attached, and no obvious way out for the buyer.

Craft patterns are digital downloads. A crochet or knitting pattern is a PDF, delivered instantly, and a listing for one is a photograph of a finished object. If that photograph is generated, there is nothing behind it. The pattern cannot produce the pictured item because the pictured item was never made.

They ironically claim to want to keep shopping human, yet they allow all forms of AI. Which doesn't matter if it's labeled AI. You can search for crochet patterns and go through pages and pages before finding a real pattern.

I'm an experienced crocheter. Etsy is one of my go-to's for patterns. But lately, It's turning into AI patterns and its getting ridiculous.

have bought several crochet patterns recently that have turned out to be AI scams. Very difficult to get money back and ETSY won't remove those scam patterns from sale, so others get sucked in as well

Etsy's stance on AI allows sellers to advertise using AI-generated images. As such, sellers can advertise patterns and recipes that will never produce the advertised result for the buyer.

Then comes the part that makes it expensive rather than annoying.

The amount of AI on this app is so disappointing. If you're trying to buy patterns, 95% are AI slop and there's no refunds because it's a download, not a physical product.

Experienced crafters in this group say they can now spot generated patterns on sight, which tells you how visible the problem is to the people it targets.

can't trust any of the patterns or seller pics anymore. They're all AI and it's turned etsy to trash. I'm sure they must be seen the sales drop because nearly every fibre artist and creative I know refuses to use etsy now.

I'm a seller and shopper on Etsy but now Etsy is flooded with fake, AI-gen listings that drown out and give a bad image to real crafters and creators. AI scams that cheat your money with fake patterns.

3. Drop Shipping and Resale (23 Reviews)

The second half of the complaint has nothing to do with AI. It is older, and it is about who is on the other end of the listing.

Needs a HEAVY crackdown on dropshippers. The majority of sellers are scammers selling the same products you could find on aliexpress and temu for insane profit margins and it drowns out the actual artisans you're meant to come to Etsy for.

HATE that drop shippers can use it for mass produced items. that alone means I'm looking for alternative source for artisan created items, the true artists deserve five stars but the app/site doesn't deserve any... averaged to three.

I like to buy from your app, BUT- you have some sellers with the word Design in their name, yet they don't design anything.

lots of drop shippers, most stuff on here you could get the exact same thing but cheaper elsewhere like amazon.

Two describe how they worked it out: one from the pricing and the made-to-order claim, one from the box it arrived in.

Lost Its Value Proposition. Platform has been overtaken by people using AI to dress up WalMart goods, claim they are made to order, and win you over through spot discounting that's still 2X over WalMart.

on both items I ordered.. what was pictured was not shipped. first experience with Etsy and it will be my last. what a joke. one item showed up in an Amazon box missing a part and a lot lower quality than what was pictured.

And 17 of the 73 make the comparison explicitly, which is the part Etsy should probably care about most. A marketplace that charges a premium for authenticity is being priced against the marketplaces that never claimed it.

Overpriced Temu with a few gems. Check Temu before buying unless it's genuinely something made by hand.

Pathetic and disheartening experiences OVER AND OVER again. There are two decent sellers in a TRILLION.

4. There Is No Filter, and Reporting Goes Nowhere (19 Reviews)

Nineteen of the 73 reviews are not complaints about the existence of these listings. They are complaints about not being given a tool.

While there are legitimate sellers with quality goods you have to sift through a lot of cheap dropship and ai listing's with no way to filter them out.

Full of AI slop. I wanted to buy some handmade stickers or a phone case, but AI slop has overtaken it. Please force sellers to disclose if they use AI and let me filter them out.

How can it be that ai does not have to be tagged? I think it's unfair that it does not have to be tagged! Having a block button would also be useful.

so full of AI slop and drop shippers it's impossible to find real sellers who actually make what they sell. in addition Etsy highlights these AI products that are not even real and patterns that would be impossible to complete.

This app used to be great, but now it's full of AI generated products. You can't even report them because Etsy doesn't have any policies that restrict them.

Too much ai. A very large number of posts are ai and it's very obvious. The app doesn't give any way to report these posts.

Read together, these 19 describe a product decision rather than a moderation backlog. Buyers are asking for one of three things: a mandatory AI label, a filter to exclude generated listings, or a block button for a shop. None of the three exists in the app they are reviewing.

5. The Share Is Rising, and the Share Is the Only Fair Measure

Raw complaint counts per month are close to meaningless in app stores, because the store returns the newest reviews and caps how many you can pull. What you are measuring is the collection window, not the mood.

The honest measure is what fraction of substantial complaints belong to a theme. Here is that fraction, month by month, in this corpus:

MonthSubstantial negativesNot-handmade complaintsShare
June 2026 (from the 17th)571119.3%
July 20261042927.9%
August 2026 (to the 28th)1033332.0%

June is a partial month, but partial months do not distort a ratio the way they distort a count. Across ten weeks, roughly one in five substantial complaints became roughly one in three.

6. The Other Thing That Happened This Summer

There is a second, smaller cluster in this corpus worth separating out, because it is a specific product change rather than a market complaint. Seven reviewers describe losing the feed that showed new items from shops they follow, with several dating it to a late-June update.

App lost the "new from shops you follow" section which is 90% why I use the app. For some reason, I still get notifications for it but have no way to view them!

Newest app update moved the updates tab to under your profile instead of in the hearts tab. Kind of a goofy change when it was fine before and took me forever to find it.

last time I lowered my review was because you removed shop updates from the favorites page. you brought it back. now is gone again. and this time it has a notification bubble I can't dismiss because there's nothing to view.

Etsy recently removed the ability to see new items from shops you follow, making it virtually useless to follow shops in the first place. The main feed is flooded with AI images and drop shipped Temu garbage.

That last one connects the two stories. If a buyer's defense against an unreliable catalog is following the shops they already trust, then removing the follow feed removes the defense. Four of these seven reviews name AI or drop shipping in the same breath.

7. It Is Not a US-Only Complaint

We swept 32 additional storefronts. The eight other English-language stores returned nothing the US pull had not already produced, which is normal: Google serves the same English review pool. The remaining 18 stores produced 2,985 unique reviews the US pull had never seen, of which 390 were substantial negatives.

A keyword sweep in 15 languages returned 52 candidates. Reading them, 28 are the same complaint, spread across ten storefronts: Germany 7, Netherlands 7, France 4, Italy 3, Greece 2, and one each in Spain, Poland, Sweden, Finland and Japan.

One caveat, stated plainly: these international windows are not comparable to the US one. The German store's substantial negatives run from May 2026, the Finnish store's go back to 2019. You can use them to show the complaint exists in a language, not to compare rates between countries.

Finnish

surkea, täynnä varastettuja virkkausohjeita jotka on ilmaisena muualla, ai-generoituja kuvia, dropshipattuja "käsintehtyjä" koruja, mukeja jne.

The German and Dutch reviews land on the same sub-theme as the American ones, and it is the pattern trap again: generated crochet patterns, sold as instructions, that cannot be worked. The Japanese review makes a second point worth flagging, because it is structural rather than editorial. It says the buyer protection window runs out while a handmade item is being remade, and then adds that listing photos are increasingly AI, with the delivered item far below what was pictured.

What Etsy's Rating Does and Does Not Tell You

A 4.85 on Play and a 4.93 on the App Store are not fake, and this article is not arguing that Etsy is a bad app. It is a fast, well-built shopping app, and the overwhelming majority of ratings are five stars.

But a star rating measures transactions, and this complaint is not about a transaction. It is about what the marketplace is. A buyer who receives a drop-shipped item on time, undamaged, at the price shown has no reason to leave one star, and many of them do not. That is why 27.7% of the substantial complaints saying the same thing matters more here than the average.

The number Etsy would want to watch is not 73. It is that 61 of those 73 use the word AI unprompted, in a ten-week window, on a platform whose store listing is the phrase "Shop from Real People."

If You Still Buy on Etsy, These Habits Come Straight From the Reviews

Nothing here is clever. Each item is what the reviewers who got burned say they now do.

Swipe through every photo before buying, not just the first. Reviewers repeatedly describe a generated hero image followed by real photos further down the carousel, or no real photos at all.

Read the reviews with photos, and sort for them where the shop has them. Buyer photos are the one part of a listing a seller cannot generate.

Treat digital downloads as final. Reviewers in this corpus consistently report that a pattern or a printable is much harder to get refunded than an object, because there is nothing to return.

For patterns specifically, check that the listing shows a photograph of the finished item made by the seller, ideally in more than one shot and with the yarn or fabric named. Experienced crafters in this corpus say generated pattern photos have impossible stitch geometry.

If a shop's whole catalog is stylistically identical and priced well above the same item elsewhere, that is the drop shipping tell 23 reviewers describe.
