Strava Not Recording: 78 Runs Lost or Cut Short (2026)

By Unstar · Editorial Team

Strava holds 4.59 stars from 1,170,105 Google Play ratings. We read the 152 negative reviews that mention recording: 40 describe an activity that would not save, 38 a recording that stopped mid run, and the save failures cluster on app versions 459 to 462.

If you finished a run and Strava had nothing to show for it, the first useful thing to know is that "Strava is not recording" describes at least five different failures. They have different causes, different fixes, and in the reviews we read they did not even happen in the same months.

Strava holds 4.59 stars from 1,170,105 Google Play ratings on 100 million plus installs, with 67,298 of those ratings at one star, and 4.81 from 369,325 ratings on iOS. This article is only about the negative reviews, and specifically about the one thing the app has to get right before anything else works.

Quick Answer: Why Did Strava Not Save My Run?

Because the save step failed, not the tracking. The most common story in our data is an activity that ran fine and then would not finish: the app hangs on an endless spinner at save, or greets you at the end with a message saying it recovered from a problem and resumed, with nothing recorded.

That failure clustered hard. It peaked in late April and May 2026 on app versions 459 to 462, then dropped by two thirds in June. A second failure, recording that cuts out mid activity, is steadier. A third, an activity that saves with the wrong distance, is completely flat and has been there the whole time.

We cannot see Strava's servers, so treat any mechanism as inference. What is measurable is how many people report each failure, when they reported it, and which version they were on.

What We Read

We pulled the 3,000 most recent Google Play reviews from the US storefront and kept the 596 rated 1 to 3 stars with enough text to categorise. They run from 4 April to 22 August 2026, so this is a four and a half month window on a very busy app. We then repeated the pull across 18 other storefronts in 14 languages. After removing duplicates the combined corpus is 5,600 unique reviews, 2,936 of them negative, and 1,020 long enough to read as reports.

Then we searched the 596 for any mention of GPS, recording, tracking, distance or a lost activity, which returned 152 candidates, and read every one.

Five Failures, Counted

What the review actually describedReviews
Activity finished but would not save, or vanished40
Recording stopped or dropped out mid activity38
Saved fine, but the distance or route is wrong27
Would not start, or never got a GPS lock11
Wrong data synced in from a watch or another app8
Off topic (used the words while complaining about the paywall)28

The keyword net was wrong 28 times out of 152, or about 18 percent, which is why every count here comes from reading rather than from a search.

Two clusters, 40 plus 38, are the ones that cost you the workout: 78 reviews describe an activity that was lost or cut short. That is what the rest of this article is about.

The Save Failure Has a Shape

The 40 lost activities are not spread evenly. Here is what share of each month's substantial negative reviews they represent, which is the honest way to compare across a window that a store fills newest first.

MonthSubstantial negative reviewsLost or unsaved activity
April 2026 (from the 4th)12615 (11.9%)
May 202616113 (8.1%)
June 20261082 (1.9%)
July 2026996 (6.1%)
August 2026 (to the 22nd)1024 (3.9%)

Google Play records the app version the reviewer had installed. Of the 40, 32 carry a version tag, and 22 of those sit on versions 459.10, 460.9, 461.13, 462.9 and 462.11, which is late April through mid May. For contrast, only 6 of the 38 mid activity dropouts and 3 of the 27 wrong distance reviews land in the same band.

That is the difference between an incident and a background condition, and it matters when you are deciding whether to wait for an update or change your setup.

Currently the app is not working properly. I cannot save any new recorded activity. On opening the app it is stuck on a blank screen. Worst app to track workouts if it is not reliable for long term.

In the 2 years since I first installed Strava it's been easy to use and lots of helpful data on the free user version. It's very inspiring for a novice runner. Since Saturday though there seems to be a bug. I cannot save runs, it's hanging.

garbage app. Been using it for a year to track exercise. Now after updating 4/2026,it will not save my last activity. The app freezes with spinning circle and I have to force close then restart. This error always comes back as it "recovers last activity" but won't stop/save it.

I've been using strava awhile and something is up lately because it will not save my activity. It just gets stuck thinking about it. I have to uninstall and reinstall just to start another workout so I think it's over. It's been great but now infuriating

sometimes strava is always loading, i mean its not letting me save the recorded activities and all things dont work, the server is okay idk whats the problem, please fix itm

The Worst Version of It Is the Race You Just Finished

The reviews that stop you cold are the ones where the lost activity was the point of the day.

I’m just disappointed that my activity didn’t save. I ran half a marathon, and all of a sudden the activity was gone. It feels like all my hard work and effort meant nothing because of an error. Because of this experience, I wouldn’t recommend this app. I'm so pissed off

i have just ran a half marathon but the apps decided to loading forever after that, making saving impossible. I'm furious as it was my first half marathon and I want it to be recorded! but this app fails to do its main function!

I so wanted to give this app 5 stars because I loved using it for some of my training runs for a half marathon. I just finished the half marathon and used the app to track my run. It wouldn't save and now it's just gone! :( Why?!? 😭

Good app when it works, but it keeps failing at the worst possible moment. I did a long distance cycling session for hours, and Strava suddenly failed to save my progress. All that distance, effort, and data just gone. This has happened more than once.

I started using it again yesterday on my walk of 5.3 miles. It worked fine. Today I started a new recording, hit the lap button after lap 1, then after lap 2, then paused it for 2 min. Then hit resume. When I finished lap 3 I go to hit stop and the entire session is gone.

this app has not recorded the last 4 of my runs, ive continued to pay the subscription fee and also asked for a reason? knowing how to use this app its not a fault my end . them long 10ks I worked so hard to do absolutely gained no recordings

A specific message shows up again and again, and it is worth learning to recognise, because it is the app telling you the recording already failed.

useless. its only job is to record my activities but it only works half the time. im tired of "an unexpected error occured, your recording has now resumed" greeting me at the END of my workout, meaning NOTHING was actually recorded at all.

38 More Where It Stops Halfway

The second cluster is different in kind. The app records, then quietly stops, and you find out at the end that half the route is a straight line or missing entirely.

GPS drop-out constantly. The GPS tracking only works about 50% of the time. In the middle on a walk it forgets where I am until I get my phone out my pocket to conclude my activity, then it remembers. Strava is ridden with bugs which makes it act like a dementia patient. Awful. Needs fixing.

Strava used to be perfect. Never a problem. In the last few months though, it's barely worked at all. Just stops recording, and misses half of my run. Makes it look like I've run a direct line from point to point, through houses and rivers.

Great apart from crashes, randomly cuts out mid way through long rides, even in places with good reception. have to constantly check if its still recording.

zero stars👎 very frustrating experience first time i tried the app it only recorded 34 minutes of a 45 minute ride and didn't track the route. assumed it was a glitch until i went on my next ride which was about 30 minutes and it only recorded 18 seconds and once again did not track the route.

great for tracking your activities. also not great at tracking your activities. It Has issues with auto resuming from auto pause, sometimes just draws a straight line and doesnt even count the distance. most of the time it just stops the whole recording on your first stop.

For a long time now i am having trouble with the app not tracking my routes entirely. Half of my routes are missing and so often it says at the end of recording it that Strava is recovering from an error.

decided to try the app because my old health watch only tracks steps for distance and doesn't suit well for walking and jogging. in the middle of my route (not even a half mile in)gps cuts out and doesn't reconnect at all.

One of these is not a bug at all, and it is the cheapest thing on this page to fix: the pause and resume control looks the same in both states.

The button to toggle between "pause" and "resume" is the same color. So when you're running, it's extremely difficult to see if you've stopped or restarted your activity, resulting in chunks of the workout not being recorded.

The Flat Line: 27 Reviews Where the Distance Is Just Wrong

Now the control group. These activities save. The number on them is simply not true, and unlike the save failure this complaint does not move: it is 4.0 percent of April complaints, 3.1 in May, 6.5 in June, 5.1 in July and 4.9 in August. No spike, no version cluster, no incident.

Very inaccurate. I ran 5 miles today and it said I ran 7. It was saying some of my splits were 40 seconds. I did another run the other day where I was in the city, where GPs would be really accurate. It said I ran 16 miles when I ran 8.

The app does not track distance properly!!! I switched to Strava from Adidas Running this spring when a known software glitch in Running caused it to stop syncing activities from my watch. Strava worked great for a while. Now it's counting 30 mile bike rides as 16 miles and 16 mile bike rides as 9. The loop I ride is 8 miles. 2 laps can't be 9 miles!!!!

very bad gps functionality. showing any random route and for my reguler 3.2 km run it shows 23km.. made a mistake to pay for premium version.. waste of money

The app doesn't calculate right my distance. Even when I am running inside a stadium, at random points it puts me outside in the street. Tragic!! P.S. why doesn't it show the calories?

The tracking consistently adds about 2-3% extra distance which doesn't sound like a lot but for a 20 mile run is about half a mile. The app also puts all this AI garbage in your face.

If this is your complaint, waiting for an update is the wrong plan. It is worth testing against a second source on the same route before blaming any single app.

Watches Are Their Own Category

Eleven reviews describe recording that never starts, and eight describe wrong data arriving from another device. A recurring specific in both groups is the watch companion app demanding an update that the watch says does not exist, sometimes in the middle of an activity.

I have a galaxy watch 8 classic and between my run the app wanted an update and literally stopped recording my run i am frustrated it was supposed to be my new personal best and it stopped working because it wanted an update out of the blue

App is great for tracking many types of activities and provides in depth information... However, it keeps getting stuck in a loop stating it needs to be updated on my Galaxy Watch and there is no update available.

I use my Google Pixel watch to track the distance and Strava often cuts off a large chunk and makes it actually impossible to correct.

Fix Your Distance Issues!!! I'm uninstalling this because the distance never syncs up with my Galaxy Watch 7/Samsung Health and it always says I ran a shorter distance. Maybe if this synced properly I would be willing to pay for it...

synchronised activities give the wrong distance and the ONLY way to correct it is to open the website, find the activity, then 3 horizontal dots for re calculate distance - to correct things. this is not available in the app and is inconvenient.

That last one contains the most useful workaround in the entire corpus, and it is in Step 5 below.

It Is Not Only the English Store

We ran the same read across the other storefronts. Forty-six reviews from 2026 describe the same recording or save failure in nine languages: German, French, Spanish, Italian, Dutch, Portuguese, Turkish, Polish and Russian. The Polish and Dutch sets are especially concentrated in late April and May, which is exactly when the US cluster peaked.

Spanish

French

What Reviewers Tried

Inside the 78 lost or cut short reviews, people report their own attempts. These are mentions, not success rates.

AttemptReviews that mention it
Uninstall and reinstall13
Restart the phone or force close4
Permissions or battery settings3
Contacted support3

Exactly one reviewer reports the problem ending, and credits a reinstall after a watch app update.

update 01/05/26: android issue finally fixed and no longer goes back to home screen mid-workout. had to uninstall and reinstall the app to make it work at 1.51. Still not good enough that it took them this long to fix, alot of races ruined by this.

That is a thin result, and we are reporting it as thin. Review corpora are structurally biased here: people write when something breaks and rarely come back to say it started working.

not sure Strava is calculating distance properly. i uninstalled it, then installed a fresh up to date copy WITH location toggled 'on'. What else can i try for accuracy?

I tried everything to make this app work. I locked it so it doesn't auto-close, gave it every needed permission, even made sure I had enough battery so my phone doesn't go in battery saver mode (because the app won't work properly in battery saver mode as per the in-app message).

Step 1: Check Your Version Before You Change Anything

Open Google Play, find Strava, and look at the installed version. The save failure in our data concentrates on 459 to 462, which shipped in late April and early May 2026. If you are behind, updating is the cheapest move available and it costs you nothing. If you are current and it still happens, skip to Step 3, because the version fingerprint is not your problem.

Step 2: Do Not Close the App Until the Activity Appears in Your Feed

The single most common shape in these 40 reviews is a spinner at save that never resolves, and people force closing it. Finish the activity, wait for it to land in your own feed, and only then leave the app. If you see a message saying Strava recovered from a problem and resumed, treat that as a failed recording, not a recovered one: reviewers who saw it consistently found nothing was saved.

Step 3: Give It Background Location and Turn Off Battery Optimisation

On Android, set location permission to allow all the time, then remove Strava from battery optimisation and any "put unused apps to sleep" list. Several reviewers describe recording that only continues while the app is on screen, and one describes an update resetting the always-allow permission and losing the kilometres that followed. This is also the fix that reviewers most often say they had already tried, which is why it is here at Step 3 and not Step 1.

Step 4: Record on One Device, and Update the Watch Before You Leave

If you use a watch, decide before you start whether the phone or the watch is recording, and check the watch app for a pending update at home rather than at the trailhead. The update loop in these reviews interrupts activities that were already running, and the only fix reviewers report is uninstalling and reinstalling the watch app.

Step 5: If Only the Distance Is Wrong, Recalculate It on the Web

For synced or slightly off activities, the correction lives on the website and not in the app: open the activity in a browser, use the three dot menu, and choose to recalculate the distance. One reviewer walks through exactly that after Strava support went quiet. If the number is wrong on every activity rather than one, compare the same route against another source before you rebuild your setup around one app's opinion.

What We Are Not Saying

We are not saying Strava is broken for most people. It has 4.59 stars from more than 1.1 million ratings, and this corpus contains only complaints by construction.

We are also not claiming that the save failure has been fixed. Its share fell from 11.9 percent of April complaints to 1.9 percent in June, then rose again to 6.1 percent in July. That is a decline, not a disappearance, and the July uptick has no single version behind it.

And we are not pretending the recording complaints are the biggest theme in these reviews. 171 of the 596, or 28.7 percent, are about the subscription: the paywall, the trial, the price, the prompts. That is a different article. This one is about the reviews from people who were happy to pay and just wanted the run back.

See the live data: Strava negative reviews tracks the current rating and what athletes are complaining about this week, Is Strava legit? covers the trust question, and how to cancel Strava is for the other 28.7 percent.
