Chipotle Order at the Wrong Location? 150 Reviews (2026)
Chipotle holds 4.72 stars from 557,026 Google Play ratings. We read 249 reviews about wrong stores and cancelling across 551 days and hand-verified 150 about orders sent to the wrong location. The app has no cancel button, 25 reviewers say it reused their last store, and 16 describe being told to place and pay for a second order before the first one is refunded.
You build a bowl in the Chipotle app, pay, and only on the confirmation screen notice the address. It is the Chipotle near your office, or the one from a road trip three months ago, or a store two states away. You look for a cancel button. There isn't one.
That moment is one of the most specific, repeated complaints in eighteen months of Chipotle app reviews, and it has a follow up that surprises almost everyone who hits it: according to dozens of reviewers, the way to get your money back is to place and pay for a second order first.
Chipotle holds 4.72 stars from 557,026 Google Play ratings, and only 33,677 of them, 6.0%, are 1 to 3 stars. On the App Store it holds 4.68 from 1,862,398. This is a well liked app. That is part of why this particular complaint stands out: when it happens, it turns fans into one star reviews.
Quick Answer: What Do I Do If I Ordered at the Wrong Chipotle?
Act fast, and do not look for a cancel button, because the app does not have one. We read 249 Chipotle reviews that mention a wrong store, a default location or cancelling, out of 8,100 US Google Play reviews covering 551 days, and hand-verified 150 about the app sending orders to the wrong location. 112 describe an order that actually went to the wrong store. 25 say the app quietly reused the last store they ordered from. 16 describe the same instruction from support: place a new order at the correct store, then send that order number or receipt, and only then will the first order be refunded. Two say a replacement bought at the counter instead of in the app was not accepted. Across 551 days we found exactly one reviewer who got a wrong-store order cancelled by phone. Before you pay, read the store name on the checkout screen, because the far-away warning some reviewers describe only appears after the order is placed.
How We Read These Reviews
We pulled the 8,100 most recent US Google Play reviews for Chipotle on 25 September 2026. They run from 23 March 2025 to 24 September 2026, 551 days, with reviews on every day except Christmas Day 2025. 4,489 are 1 to 3 stars, and 1,903 of those are 120 characters or longer, 70.1% of them one star.
Short reviews matter here ("sent order to a chipotle 30 minutes away" is a complete account), so we did not use a length filter. We searched all 8,100 for anything mentioning a wrong, different or other store, a default location, the last or closest location, distance, or cancelling. That returned 249 reviews. We read all 249 and kept 150 where the complaint is that the app sent an order to a location the reviewer did not want, or that the way it picks a location leads to that.
What we threw out is instructive too. Delivery orders dropped at the wrong street address, payments that defaulted to Google Pay, stores that were closed or out of ingredients, and rewards lost on a cancelled order all matched the search and are real complaints, but they are not this one.
Of the 150, 112 describe a specific order that went to the wrong store. The other 38 complain about how the app chooses a location without describing a particular incident. 142 of the 150 are 1 to 3 stars and 102 are one star. Eight are four stars, and those are among the most useful, because they come from people who like the app and still got caught.
The app is great, except the pick up location is not very prominent. Would be nice if there was a follow up question to verify pick up spot. I've inadvertently ordered from the wrong store more than once. Judging by the staff's reaction, it's not an uncommon problem.
It Has Been Going On All Along, and It Is Getting More Common
This is not a new bug from a single release. It shows up in every month of the corpus. What has changed is its share.
| Period | Wrong location reviews | All 1-3 star reviews | Share |
|---|---|---|---|
| April to September 2025 | 38 | 1,687 | 2.3% |
| October 2025 to March 2026 | 49 | 1,345 | 3.6% |
| April to September 2026 | 62 | 1,367 | 4.5% |
| September 2026 alone | 14 | 203 | 6.9% |
Stores return the newest reviews first and cap how many they return, so raw counts per month mostly measure the collection window. Shares do not have that problem, and the share has roughly doubled in a year.
Why It Happens: The App Reuses Your Last Store
25 of the 112 say the app defaulted to the last Chipotle they ordered from, rather than the nearest one or a favourite. The distances people report are the reason the reviews get angry:
I love chipotle when I am there in the resteraunt but ordering from the app is a different story. I placed an order then noticed afterward the app had selected a Chipotle over 100 miles away to where I had last used the app. There was no way to immediately cancel the order. there isn't even a phone number I could have called from the app.
ordered food on the app didn't allow me to change/confirm location sent order 500 miles away to a random store in Oregon
Across the 112 we counted a store 100 miles away three times, 500 miles away twice, and orders placed two, three and six hours from where the reviewer actually was. Ten reviewers say they ended up driving to the wrong store to collect food they had already paid for.
A couple of four star reviewers explain the mechanism better than the angry ones. The location is small, shown near the top, and if two stores sit on similarly named roads, it is easy to read past:
My order was great as it usually is but I have one request, could you please make the ordering LOCATION larger or somehow more prominent? We live between 2 locations that are both on "main st.". This is the second time I have accidentally ordered from the wrong location and had to drive 7 miles to pickup my order. Because the location is small at the top of the app it does not show the city, just the address number and street name.
Not everyone accepts that it is user error. Eight reviewers say they did select the right store and the order still went somewhere else, including one who says the app switched them to the closest location without warning after they had deliberately picked a different one:
The location does not work!! It doesn't matter if I update the store location manually and then place an order, 3 times now I have been falsely assured of location and order placed....then receive a notification "seems like you are farther away than expected".
Even after selecting location for pickup, app will change location to closest location withoit warning.
We cannot tell from reviews which of these are app faults and which are misreads of a small label. But the second one runs the opposite way to every other report, which suggests the location logic is doing more than just remembering the last store.
The warning that comes too late
Six reviewers describe a "you seem to be far away" message, and all six say it arrives after the order is paid for, or when they walk into the store:
Setting your location for an order is terrible. I've ordered to the wrong store multiple times because it's just bad UX design. The app warns you that "it looks like you might be trying to pickup from the wrong store" only when you get to the store. Make it so I need to set a pickup location every time, like literally every other app.
The Part That Surprises People: No Cancel Button
46 of the 112 mention trying to cancel. In 551 days of reviews, we found one reviewer who says they got a wrong-store order cancelled, by calling. Everyone else describes the same wall: no cancel option in the app, a restaurant phone line that routes to an automated system, and a support chat called Pepper.
Accidentally ordered to wrong location. I realized right away and tried to cancel, turns out you can't, so there goes $20.
24 of the 112 mention Pepper, a chatbot or an automated system, almost always because it could not do what they needed:
I placed an order in the app at the wrong location. I've spent over an hour trying to get a remedy in the app but no success! Pepper keeps me in an endless loop because I don't have a new order number. And it took me several minutes to even location useless "Pepper". I need a real person to speak to and there is no way to access one! Stupid app and now, my opinion, stupid company that won't resolve a problem.
I placed an order at the wrong location and the pepper chat box said to look in my email for a confirmation code to be connected to a representative. I never got the email. chipotle needs to provide the confirmation at checkout in the app after payment is made .
That second review is worth reading carefully, because it points to a practical detail: the chat asked for a confirmation code from the order email, and the email never came.
"Place Another Order First"
This is the pattern that turns a mistake into a bad review. 16 reviewers describe support telling them the wrong-store order would only be refunded or cancelled once they placed a new order at the correct store and provided that new order's number or receipt. The most complete description comes from a reviewer who writes it as a warning to others:
CONFIRM THE CORRECT LOCATION. Do not assume it will default to the one that is nearest to you. They will not cancel the order or void it until you place a new order first at your correct location and give them proof with the receipt or order number.
Others describe the same instruction from the other side of the counter:
Horrible customer service. Order sent to wrong location. They refused to cancel order, even though I notified them 10 minutes before it was supposed to be ready. The customer service rep insisted I place a new order app the correct location before they would cancel the one already done. Since I was on my way to work I had no time to do that.
Pepper and live agents are not helpful. Chipotle's policies are absurd. Please don't make a mistake order at the wrong location because they will not cancel your order unless you place another one and give them a second order number. They are certainly no Chick-Fil-A. Don't use the app to order ahead! It's horrible service should you make a mistake.
We could not find this policy published anywhere in the app, and we are not claiming it is Chipotle's official rule. What we can say is that sixteen people, across eighteen months, describe the same condition in close to the same words.
It also breaks down in predictable places. Seven of the sixteen describe a situation the policy did not fit: they were already standing inside a store, the right store was closed or had stopped taking orders, they were on the way to work or physically unable to go, or the new order was placed at the counter instead of in the app.
I've been using this app for years. I eat here with my daughter At least 3 or 4 times a week. This week I accidentally ordered at the wrong store So I placed a new order inside at a different store who did not provide a receipt which has never been a problem. Chipotle is refusing to give me my money back since I don't have a receipt of a new order. So I Paid $56 for 2 bowls.
the chat bot sucks. closes the conversation without resolving the issue. ordered at the wrong location and needed to cancel but would not let me unless I ordered at the right location online even though I walked in to the store and placed my order. they would not take that order number. I guess chipotle got an extra 33.00 out of me. worst app experience ever!!!!
Those two are the most important reviews in the set if you are in this situation right now. Both placed the replacement order in person, and both say it was not accepted: one because there was no receipt, the other because support would not take the in-store order number.
Reported losses in the reviews that name a figure run from $14 to $56. Two reviewers say they disputed the charge with their bank, and one advises others to take a screenshot and do the same.
Two Reviewers Who Got Help
For balance, here are the two accounts in the corpus where support did something useful. A four star reviewer says the support team helped them work through a wrong-location order:
Great app, easy to use to order with. The only downside is that it doesn't dynamically update location, so it's very easy to accidentally order from the wrong location. To counter that, Chipotle has an amazing customer support team that does, in my experience, help work through those issues.
And a one star reviewer says support fixed it, with a condition:
App will not choose the nearest location but the previous location you order from causing me to have to call customer service and be told "we can fix this for this one time only."
"This one time only" suggests the fix is discretionary. Two helpful outcomes against well over a hundred unhelpful ones is not a reason to count on it.
Step 1: Read the Store Name on the Checkout Screen, Every Time
Reviewer after reviewer says the app does not ask you to confirm a location before you order, and 25 say it quietly reused the last store they visited. The only reliable protection is to check the address on the checkout screen before you tap pay, especially if you have ordered from a different town, from work, or on a trip since your last order.
Step 2: If You Just Ordered at the Wrong Store, Do Not Hunt for a Cancel Button
There isn't one, and 46 reviewers describe losing time looking for it. Decide straight away which of two routes you are taking: collect the order at the wrong store, or ask for a refund. Ten reviewers chose to drive to the wrong store. If it is close enough, that is the only route in the corpus that never failed.
Step 3: Place the Replacement Order in the App, Not at the Counter
If you want a refund, the pattern in 16 reviews is that support asks for a second order number or receipt from the correct store. Two reviewers who ordered the replacement at the counter say it was not accepted. Ordering the replacement through the app gives you an order number and an email receipt that support can see.
Step 4: Keep the Confirmation Email, and Screenshot the Charge
One reviewer could not reach an agent through Pepper because the chat wanted a code from a confirmation email that never arrived. Another was asked for screenshots of the payment. Before you open the chat, have the first order's confirmation, the second order's number, and a screenshot of both charges ready.
Step 5: Ask Pepper for an Agent, and Say "Wrong Location" Plainly
All three good outcomes in the corpus came from a person, not the bot: two by phone to customer service, one through the support team. Reviewers describe Pepper closing the chat when it cannot help, so ask for a human early and state plainly that the order was placed at the wrong location. Calling the restaurant itself, according to reviewers, reaches an automated line that sends you back to the app.
Step 6: If You Are Refused, Your Card Issuer Is the Last Resort
Two reviewers disputed the charge with their bank, and a third advises it. We have no reports of how those disputes ended, so treat it as a last resort after the steps above, not a shortcut around them.
