Roku App Won't Connect to TV: 64 Reviews, 3 Causes (2026)
The Roku app holds 4.73 stars from 4,690,092 Google Play ratings. We read 298 negative reviews from three months: 64 are about the app failing to reach the TV, the share has not moved across four builds, and six reviewers hit a catch worth knowing first.
The remote is gone. It is under a cushion, or the dog got it, or it simply stopped pairing. You remember there is an app, you install it, and the app says it cannot find any devices. Your phone is on the Wi-Fi. The TV is on the Wi-Fi. Nothing happens.
The Roku app holds 4.73 stars from 4,690,092 Google Play ratings, with 98,809 of them at one star, on more than 100 million installs. The iOS app is rated 4.73 from 6,035,228 ratings, so unlike most apps we read, there is no store gap here to explain. Both versions are rated well, which makes the negative reviews more interesting rather than less: they are not a general revolt, they are a narrow and repeated failure.
Quick Answer: Why Won't the Roku App Find My TV?
In 97 negative reviews we read and categorised, 64 are about the app failing to reach the TV at all. They split three ways: the app cannot see the device (24), it pairs and then drops (34), and a smaller group hits a catch worth knowing before you rely on the app (6): the phone can only reach a Roku that is already on your network, and putting a Roku on your network usually needs the physical remote you just lost.
Two other complaints show up around the remote and are counted separately: controls that moved or disappeared (18) and private listening dropping out (15).
We cannot see your router, and local network discovery depends on hardware we have no visibility into. Treat every mechanism below as what reviewers describe. What is measurable is how often each description appears, and whether it moves.
What We Read
We pulled the 3,000 most recent Google Play reviews from the US storefront and kept the 298 rated 1 to 3 stars with enough text to categorise. They run from 3 June to 24 August 2026, with 97, 122 and 79 in June, July and August, which is even enough to compare months as shares.
A keyword net for anything about the remote, connecting, pairing, the network or the device returned 126 candidates. We read all of them and dropped 29 that were about something else: TV firmware, billing, channel content, the ads on the TV home screen, a parental control PIN. That leaves 97 confirmed, each assigned to exactly one group so the numbers add up rather than double count.
We also pulled the newest reviews from 19 non-US storefronts. One methodology note: the UK storefront returned the same 200 reviews as the US one, so we excluded it from the international counts to avoid counting people twice. What is left is 971 unique non-US reviews and 49 substantial negatives.
What the 97 Reviews Are About
| Fault | Reviews | Share of 97 | One star |
|---|---|---|---|
| Connects, then drops | 34 | 35.1% | 18 |
| Cannot see the device at all | 24 | 24.7% | 16 |
| The catch: TV must already be online | 6 | 6.2% | 5 |
| Controls moved or removed | 18 | 18.6% | 10 |
| Private listening drops | 15 | 15.5% | 10 |
1. It cannot see the device
Twenty-four reviews describe an empty device list, or an error insisting the phone and the Roku are on different networks. Sixteen of the 64 connection reviews state explicitly that both devices are on the same Wi-Fi, which is worth counting because it is the first thing any troubleshooting page tells you to check.
app has been great until today. it says it can't find any devices but nothing has changed. same wifi same phone same tv.
stopped working. never works..not even in 2026 when my phone and tv are on the same wifi with full bars showing. says it's offline every time
This app, which was previously only good for being a remote, is now good for nothing. I'm on the same Wi-Fi as my Roku, but it doesn't see my Roku.
Several are long-running rather than momentary, which is the difference between a glitch and a dead feature.
used this app for about 6 years with no problem. all of a sudden it kept saying my tvs were not on the same network as my phone so it couldn't connect.
I have a 32 in Hisense Roku TV that is on the same network as my smart phone. My Roku account recognizes the TV but this app does not. Therefore this app is of no use for me.
ive done everything to connect my phone to any of the tvs. the app will not find any tvs we have i done all of the things. all on same network unplug, reset, uninstall you name it I tried it and nothing.
One reviewer went as far as entering the IP by hand.
When I first installed this app it worked good. I was able to connect the remote on the app to my TV just fine. Now it says, it can't find my TV. I put the IP address and it says it's wrong.
2. It connects, then drops
The largest group, at 34, is not about failing to pair. It is about pairing successfully and then losing the device, often within a single sitting, and having to force close the app to get it back.
this app is so annoying. I only have 3 TVs hooked to it and it's constantly disconnecting from them and when I try to reconnect to them it just spins and spins even after closing out the app and going back in.
its constantly having issues connecting to the network. it disconnects and will not allow me to reconnect to the point I have to completely uninstall and reinstall the app.
literally loses connection to tvs 24/7 ... this app is so buggy!!!! I have amazing wifi. it's simply the design of the app and whoever made it. I'll be connected one second then magically won't be the next.
The variant that costs the most patience is the one where the app connects to the wrong TV in a house with more than one.
it never wants to connect to my TV. I always have to close out of the app for it to connect. it says there is a wifi connection issue which isn't true because my phone works on the wifi.
Very buggy with the current update. volume stops working and have to close out the app and reopen. App constantly turns on a different TV when I'm trying to turn on another TV. It will try to turn on the TV that was last used with the app.
3. The catch nobody mentions until you need it
Six reviews describe the same closed loop, and they are the reason this article exists rather than being another list of connection complaints. The app talks to a Roku over your local network. A Roku that is not on your network yet cannot be reached. Getting a Roku onto a network means going through the on-screen setup, and that setup is driven with the physical remote.
So the app substitutes for a lost remote everywhere except the one situation where the remote is genuinely gone and the TV has been reset, moved, or put on a new router.
cannot connect to TV unless it is on my network. cannot connect to the network unless I have a remote. really poor design
Maybe it'll work for some, but it's worthless for me because the TV I want to control (it has no buttons) isn't connected to my network, as this app expects it to be, and I cannot connect it to my network because (1) it lacks any Ethernet jack and (2) doing that REQUIRES A REMOTE, which I do NOT have.
you need wifi for both, sweetie tell me why I need wifi for both most people use this app because they can't get another remote also how TF am I supposed to reconnect the wifi password if I can't even connect it without the tv needing it first?
i lost my remote so i downloaded this to use the remote on the app. I gotta connect to my one button roku tv to use the remote on my phone but need to add wifi to this tv. Such a lame app.
It is only six reviews out of 298, and we are not going to inflate that. But it is a structural limit rather than a bug, which means it will still be true after the next update, and it is the single most useful thing to know before you decide not to order a replacement remote.
The Share Does Not Move, Which Is the Point
If this were a regression, the connection group would spike in one month or on one build. It does neither.
| Month | Connection failures | Share of that month's negatives |
|---|---|---|
| Jun 2026 | 21 of 97 | 21.6% |
| Jul 2026 | 27 of 122 | 22.1% |
| Aug 2026 | 16 of 79 | 20.3% |
June starts on the 3rd and August ends on the 24th, so both are partial months. The share sits inside a three-point band.
The version labels tell the same story. Google Play stamps most reviews with the build the reviewer had installed, and four builds were live during the window.
| Build | Connection reviews | Substantial negatives on that build | Share |
|---|---|---|---|
| 13.8.0 | 1 | 21 | 4.8% |
| 13.9.1 | 11 | 42 | 26.2% |
| 13.9.2 | 15 | 55 | 27.3% |
| 14.0.0 | 20 | 110 | 18.2% |
The newest build carries a lower rate than the two before it, not a higher one. Read that carefully: it does not mean the app got better, because a build that has been out for six weeks collects a different mix of reviewers than one that has been out for ten. What it does rule out is the story people tell in the reviews themselves, that a specific recent update broke connectivity. Reviewers on every build in the window describe the same failure at roughly the same rate.
Terrible! Pay attention to people's comments! They're telling you the app won't connect after the most recent update just as mine will NOT connect. YES, It's on the same internet network just like everyone else.
That reviewer is describing something real. They are just wrong about the cause, and the version table is how you can tell.
The Other Two Complaints
Controls that moved or disappeared (18 reviews). This one does look like a change. Four reviewers ask for the power button back by name, and the complaint is specific enough to be checkable: they want to turn a TV off from the phone and cannot find the control.
Missing Power Button! Awful they removed the power button for Android users. just ridiculous!! why would I watch TV to get sleepy then have to walk across the room to turn the bright TV off to sleep?!?!?
I would rate zero stars if I could. Bring back the power button and you can have more stars. As of June '26, using the app to turn off the Roku device doesn't work either.
HATE the new menu interface. Too many category options. I have to scroll far down to get to my apps when it used to be on top.
The related grievance is how long it takes for the remote to appear. Several reviewers describe waiting through a loading home screen before the buttons are usable, which is a bad trade when the reason you opened the app is that something is happening on screen right now.
anytime I open up the remote app I have to spend 5 seconds plus waiting for the remote function to load up. makes for a very aggravating experience.
its good and really usefull when you lose your remote. but takes a while to open the app. I can be watching a show, a inappropriate scene will come on, I cant find the remote so I grab my phone and open this app, it takes 5 seconds to open and the scene has passes and the kids have already been traumatized.
it doesn't work. it's just ads. deliberately hides the actual remote and doesn't allow you to swipe up to find it so that you can't control your show and you have to reset the whole TV just to watch.
Private listening (15 reviews). The feature that routes TV audio to headphones on your phone is, for a chunk of these reviewers, the only reason the app is installed. The failure is consistent: it engages, then hands audio back to the TV a moment later, or it switches itself on when nobody asked.
Edit: Five years later and this is still the problem. The private listening function is the only reason I use this app, but it does not work. I click the headphones button on the app remote, the headphones icon appears on my TV, then disappears as though everything should work properly, but a moment later the normal volume icon appears in the same place to tell me private listening has disconnected.
The remote listening headphone option is not working with my Bluetooth headphones anymore. It continues to act as if I am disconnecting and reconnecting my headphones even though I am in the same wifi network and my headphones are connected to my phone with no issues.
the App absolutely needs the ability to disable private listening. the way it automatically turns on is wildly obnoxious. just because someone is changing the channel doesn't mean they are interested in what's on.
What Reviewers Tried
Counted across the 64 connection reviews:
| Attempt | Reviews naming it |
|---|---|
| Restart the router, the app, the TV or the device | 11 |
| Uninstall and reinstall | 9 |
| Buy or order a physical remote instead | 6 |
| Enter the IP or connect manually | 4 |
| Contact Roku support | 3 |
The reinstall reports are almost all reports of it not working. The one detailed success in the whole corpus is a network change rather than an app change, and even that reviewer came back later to edit their review.
I had tried this app a few times & it never worked so it had a 1 star review. I have a Hisense roku tv. Changed the WiFi to static IP & 2.4hz channel. Eureka! App works like a charm every time now. 👌 The only thing missing over the native remote control is dedicated buttons for Netflix etc. However, not really a big deal. Edit: June26- stopped working... Again! Super unreliable app. Aug26: tried again - useless app.
That single review is the most actionable line in 298 negatives, and it is also a warning about how durable these fixes are.
Not Only the United States
Of the 49 substantial negatives from non-US storefronts, 18 are about connecting or the remote, spread across the German, French, Spanish, Italian, Russian and Arabic stores. Six of those are from 2026, and the German one names the same detail as the US reviewers: same network, no connection.
The complaint also predates our window by years, which fits the flat monthly and version shares above. The German store carries it from October 2024, the Polish store from 2021 and the Russian store from 2018.
What to Check Before You Buy a Replacement Remote
None of this is Roku's official guidance. It is what the reviews point at, in the order that costs you the least time.
- Confirm the TV is genuinely on the same network and the same band, not a guest network and not the 5 GHz half of a router that publishes two names. The one reported success in our corpus was a move to 2.4 GHz with a static IP.
- Check whether your router has client isolation or AP isolation switched on. It blocks devices from seeing each other, which produces exactly the empty device list 24 reviewers describe, and it is often on by default on mesh and ISP-supplied routers.
- Allow the app's local network permission on the phone, and turn off any VPN. A phone on a VPN is not on your local network as far as discovery is concerned.
- If the app finds the TV but drops it, force stop and reopen before reinstalling. Eleven reviewers restarted something; nine reinstalled; the restart group reports better luck than the reinstall group.
- If the TV is not already connected to Wi-Fi, stop here and order the remote. Six reviewers learned this the expensive way, and no app-side setting changes it.
- If your reason for the app is private listening, test it before you rely on it for a late-night film. Fifteen reviewers describe it engaging and then handing audio back within seconds.
What We Could Not Tell
We cannot see any individual router, so we cannot say which of these failures is the app and which is a network doing what networks do. We do not know how many people opened the app, failed to connect and never wrote anything, which is certainly the large majority. And a review corpus is self-selecting: nobody writes to say the remote worked.
What the corpus supports is narrower. Of the substantial negative reviews people leave about an app rated 4.73 stars, roughly one in five is about the app failing to reach the television, that share has not moved across three months or four builds, and the app's usefulness as an emergency remote depends on a condition the store listing does not make obvious.
