Pandora Keeps Stopping and Crashing: 227 Reviews (2026)
Pandora holds 3.89 stars on Google Play against 4.80 on the App Store. We read 1,103 substantial negative reviews from nine months: 227 describe the app crashing or stopping on its own, and the rate has not moved across twelve builds. Sorted by hand, they fall into three patterns.
Two reviewers wrote these five months apart. They are complaining about opposite things.
I love it, but there's a BUG that keeps stopping the music on Pandora when I open other apps.. It's so annoying.
If I force close the app and am actively listening to another app, why do you keep turning on and taking over? You are not default for anything.
The first says Pandora dies the moment it is not the app on screen. The second says Pandora will not stay closed. Both are describing the same mechanism from different sides, and once you see that, the largest complaint cluster in this app's reviews stops looking like a random pile of crashes.
What We Read
We pulled the 4,000 most recent US Google Play reviews for Pandora on 7 September 2026, along with the live store metadata. The listing shows 3.89 stars from 3,307,480 ratings on more than 100 million installs.
Those 4,000 reviews cover 19 December 2025 to 5 September 2026, 261 days. Of them, 2,073 were 1-3 stars, and 1,103 were long enough to describe something at 120 characters or more. Every count below is drawn from those 1,103.
The store ratings hide where this lives. On the App Store, the same app holds 4.80 from 11,296,073 ratings. That is a gap of nearly a full star against the Play listing, on a rating base three times larger. Whatever is in this corpus is an Android story, and the numbers below should not be read as a verdict on Pandora everywhere.
Quick Answer: Why Does Pandora Keep Stopping?
Of the 1,103 substantial negative reviews, 227 describe the app crashing, freezing, force closing or stopping playback on its own. That is 20.6% of every real complaint in the window, and 146 of those 227, 64.3%, are one-star. Sorted by hand, they fall into three shapes: 18 say playback dies unless Pandora is the app on screen, 17 say the app will not leave the background and drains the battery, and 18 say the app claims to be offline while the phone has a working connection. The share has not moved. Across the twelve builds with enough reviews to measure, it runs between 18.2% and 29.4% with no direction, which means this is not something a pending update is about to fix.
The Rate Has Not Moved in Nine Months
This is the part worth publishing, because it is the part that changes what you should do about it.
| Month | Substantial complaints | About crashing or stopping | Share |
|---|---|---|---|
| December 2025 | 67 | 8 | 11.9% |
| January 2026 | 151 | 36 | 23.8% |
| February 2026 | 117 | 22 | 18.8% |
| March 2026 | 129 | 20 | 15.5% |
| April 2026 | 124 | 27 | 21.8% |
| May 2026 | 129 | 25 | 19.4% |
| June 2026 | 106 | 26 | 24.5% |
| July 2026 | 126 | 24 | 19.0% |
| August 2026 | 137 | 35 | 25.5% |
By build, the picture is the same. These are the twelve builds with at least 15 substantial complaints attached:

| 2602.1 | 94 | 20 | 21.3% |
| 2602.1.1 | 55 | 15 | 27.3% |
| 2603.1 | 25 | 6 | 24.0% |
| 2604.1 | 66 | 12 | 18.2% |
| 2605.1 | 78 | 17 | 21.8% |
| 2606.2 | 28 | 6 | 21.4% |
| 2606.3 | 37 | 10 | 27.0% |
| 2607.1 | 63 | 12 | 19.0% |

A bug produces a step. A flat line across twelve releases produces something else. Nothing in this data looks like a regression that shipped and will be reverted. The newest build in the window carries the highest share of the twelve, and one reviewer who upgraded onto it said so directly.
This new update is garbage. Says it is supposed to fix bugs and reduce crashes. Funny thing I have had Pandora for over 15 years and never had it crash, now since this update it crashes up to 10 times a day!
That review is one person's account, and a single review cannot establish a regression. The tables can, and they say the opposite of a regression: the problem is old, steady, and not tied to a release.
How We Sorted the 227
The three counts below are hand-checked, not regex output. For each pattern we screened all 227 with a wide keyword net, read every match, and dropped the ones that turned out to be about something else. A few reviews describe two of the three patterns, so the three counts do not sum to a clean total.
| What the reviewer describes | Reviews | Share of the 227 |
|---|---|---|
| Playback dies unless Pandora is on screen | 18 | 7.9% |
| The app will not leave the background | 17 | 7.5% |
| The app says it is offline while connected | 18 | 7.9% |
The rest of the 227 are unsorted crash reports with no stated trigger: the app closed, the song stopped, no further detail. That residue is the majority, and it is worth saying plainly rather than forcing every review into a bucket.
1. Playback Dies Unless Pandora Is On Screen (18 Reviews)
The sharpest version of this is one sentence long.
If this app isn't what's open on my screen, it crashes. I uninstalled, tried every troubleshooting suggestion online and nothing worked.
The rest of the group varies only in what the reviewer was doing when it happened. Opening another app:
I've had this app for a while, and I use it very often. I have an issue with using Pandora with other apps. When I try to use another app while having music in the background, my phone freezes and my music stops playing. This happens every single time with every app.
maybe be my phone but the app keeps crashing every time I open another app, which is unfortunate because I only got the app to play music in the background.
Letting the screen lock:
app keeps glitching in and shuts off. every time a song ends if the phone screen is not on I have to turn the screen on to play the next song.
if my phone times out and locks, pandora starts buffering or just stops playing. I've had pandora for years, this is a new issue.
With this new update the music will shut off when my phone screen shut down! It wasnt doing that before the update!
Or simply leaving the app for a moment:
Frustrating in every way. I got the basic subscription but it still makes me listen to ads. If I leave the app for even a minute the whole thing shuts off and I have to go back into the app to resume my music.
its good but when going through phone doing other things it stops playing so i would have to go back and find station again to play
One reviewer names all three symptoms in a single line, which is why this piece treats them together rather than as separate faults.
i am sick of this app. it used to be good, but now it's slow, keeps randomly closing, stops playing unless it's actively on the screen, goes into offline mode for no reason,
2. The App Will Not Leave the Background (17 Reviews)
Now the other side, and this is the group that makes the first one legible. Seventeen reviewers report the reverse problem: Pandora running when they did not ask it to, surviving a force stop, and eating battery while idle.
Pandora runs in the background and uses up my battery. It also says I'm using the app when I'm not. You shouldn't have to force close an app every time you stop using it.
Pandora always pauses itself. it's always crashing. And sometimes turns on by itself. I've re-downloaded the app, force close it and all the above.
I don't like the fact that the app ALWAYS starts to run on its own on my phone whenever I start my truck or car and doesn't shut down.
Randomly starts playing for no reason even when phone isn't connected to any Bluetooth devices so that's not triggering anything.
Five reviewers report that the phone itself flagged the app. On recent Android builds, the operating system watches for apps that misbehave in the background and offers to put them to sleep. In those five reviews, that prompt is the complaint.
I've been getting notifications from my phone that this app is constantly crashing and causing errors on my phone. It suggests putting it in deep sleep to combat these errors.
I used to love Pandora, but now recently it has been crashing so much. My phone is asking me to put it in deep-sleep.
keep getting a notification to put Pandora in deep sleep because it keeps crashing in the background.
That prompt is where the two halves of this corpus meet, and one reviewer wrote down the whole tradeoff in a single review. It is the single most useful review in the 227.
Excessive battery consumption when not in use. If you disconnect from Bluetooth, or from use in the car via android auto, the app stays active in the background and drains the battery...you can't restrict it in app settings or it won't play unless you keep it on the app screen.
Read that again, because it is the practical finding of this piece. Accepting the operating system's offer to restrict Pandora is exactly what produces the failure in section one. Declining it is what produces the battery drain in section two. Reviewers on both sides are describing the same setting from opposite ends, and neither position is a misunderstanding.
3. It Says You Are Offline While You Are Connected (18 Reviews)
The third pattern is the most specific, and the least explicable by anything on the user's side.
every single time I open this app it says it is offline. it won't check the internet connection on its own and go back online ever.
90% of the time I open it no matter where im at or what phone it says offline mode. Then I gotta fight with it to go online opening and closing the app.
I've been a pandora user for almost 2 decades. I haven't had many issues with it until the last year and a half. The app constantly crashes. half the time, when I open pandora, it starts in offline mode, even though I have full cellular service.
App switches to offline mode when I leave the house (wifi). This would make sense if I didn't have good 5G service in my neighborhood.
I have 100% stable connection on my wifi...all my other apps work excellent...except for this one...85% of the time all my stations I have selected are unavailable
Two things stand out in this group. Reviewers keep volunteering that their connection is fine, and several keep volunteering that no other app on the phone does this. Both are the kind of detail people only add when they have already been told it is their network.
I'm really beginning to question why I still pay for this. There's ALWAYS something wrong with the app that stops it from working properly. Right now, it keeps getting stuck on offline mode, requiring me to restart several times before it comes back online.
The Reviewers Already Ruled Out Their Own Phones
This section exists because the most common reply to a crash complaint is that the problem is the device. In this corpus, a group of reviewers got there first and spent real money finding out.
Four reviewers in the 227 replaced hardware, and one took a car to a dealer. In every case the reviewer says the problem survived.
too many times this app crashes while driving using maps, ive since gotten a whole new phone, although my phone wasn't the issue, the problem still persist
app is trash now. it doesn't even open..I get a message that Pandora is not responding. i thought it was my old phone but even with a new phone it crashes.
Pandora loses connection to day at a minimum three times a week. Sometimes as often as 3 times a day. It was so persistent that I thought my car hardware was to blame. I took it to the dealer, got everything checked and updated.
A fifth, writing in Spanish, ran the same test across two phone generations.
A regex for reviewers claiming other apps work fine returned 5 hits; two were about music selection rather than reliability, so the real count is 3. We say that rather than publishing the 5, because the difference is the whole point of reading the reviews instead of counting keywords.
my new BTooth heads cut out and in of BT repeatedly every time there is an ad. happens on no other apps, music, movies or other. so, this is Pandora's problem.
Two more Spanish reviewers named their handset while describing the same failure. Neither blames the phone.
Spanishla aplicación no sirve tengo un galaxy s24 y la aplicación solo me funciona unos segundos y se para la música
Spanishla peor aplicación se cancela la musica cada 30 segundos es una basura
The Standard Fixes, and How Often They Worked
Forty seven of the 227 reviewers say they already tried the usual things: clearing the cache, clearing data, uninstalling and reinstalling, force stopping, restarting the phone, or working through published troubleshooting steps. That is one in five of the whole cluster, and it is the reason the next section is short on promises.
been acting up and is now completely frozen. I've uninstalled the app, restarted my phone, cleared the cache, and nothing! I pay for subscription but will end immediately if you guys dont fix this
constantly crashing, I have done everything multiple times such as uninstalling, clearing the cache, permissions.
hey so I shouldn't have to delete and redownload this app 4 times a week just to get free skips again. it shouldn't crash twice a week minimum either. edit for devs: tried both options prior to my complaint
What did work, for some people, was not a fix so much as a routine. Two reviewers describe restarting the phone or force stopping the app as a thing they now do on a schedule.
Was my favorite go to music app. Not so much anymore. Music won't play. It is constantly freezing. I've cleared cache, forced stopped. It seems I have to restart my phone for it to work and I shouldn't have to do that.
fix your app freezing, or I'm going back to Spotify.. ridiculous how often I have to force stop the app to get it to play again
With that established, here is the order worth trying, and what the corpus actually supports at each step.
Step 1: Check Whether Your Phone Has Already Restricted Pandora
If playback stops the moment you leave the app, start here rather than with a reinstall. On stock Android, open Settings, then Apps, then Pandora, then Battery, and see whether it is set to Restricted or Optimised. On Samsung devices the same control lives under Settings, then Battery, then Background usage limits, where an app can be listed as Sleeping or Deep sleeping. An app in deep sleep is not allowed to keep playing when it is off screen. If you accepted a system prompt about this app at some point, that is where the setting went.
Step 2: Set Pandora to Unrestricted, Then Test the Failure Directly
Set the app to Unrestricted, then reproduce the thing that was breaking: start a station, switch to another app, and let the screen lock for a minute. This is the step that the review in section two describes from the other direction, and it is the only setting in this whole piece with a documented mechanism behind it. Expect the tradeoff that reviewer named. If playback survives now, the cost is that Pandora can also stay awake when you are done with it.
Step 3: If It Still Dies, Clear the Cache Before You Reinstall
Clear cache first, under Settings, then Apps, then Pandora, then Storage. Clear data second, which signs you out and drops downloads. Reinstall last. Do not start with the reinstall: 47 reviewers here report doing some of this, and the ones who describe an outcome mostly describe a temporary one. Treat it as worth ten minutes, not as the answer.
Step 4: When It Sticks in Offline Mode, Toggle It by Hand
Eighteen reviewers describe the app insisting it is offline on a working connection. Several also describe the workaround they settled on, which is to open the app, turn offline mode off manually in settings, and if that fails, close the app fully from the recents list and open it again. Two reviewers report having to toggle aeroplane mode on and off, and one reports having to pull over while driving to do it, which is worth knowing before you try it in a car.
Step 5: Test a Second Music App Before You Spend Money
This is the step that four reviewers here paid for by skipping it. Before you replace a phone, a head unit or a car stereo, install any other streaming app, run the same station in the same place with the same screen behaviour, and see whether it survives. If the second app is fine, the problem is not your hardware, and the reviews in the section above are your evidence that replacing it does not help.
Who Is Actually Complaining
Two facts about the composition of this cluster.
Forty two of the 227, 18.5%, identify themselves as paying subscribers, either by naming Pandora Plus or Premium, a family plan, or the fact that they pay monthly. This matters because it takes the free tier's usual explanation off the table.
I pay for Pandora. And it stops playing after every song. I have to login to my phone to start Pandora up again.
The cost has gotten ridiculous, especially considering there have been way more technical issues than in the past.
Twenty four of the 227 describe themselves as long-term users, in several cases going back more than fifteen years. Two of the three failure modes above have to be new to them for the review to make sense, and they say so.
I genuinely don't understand how a 21 year old company is having such a hard time with basics. Pandora consistently plays over itself so it runs 2 songs at a time and the pause button pauses only one.
Twenty seven of the 227 name a competitor, almost always as the thing they are leaving for. Reliability, not price or catalogue, is the reason given.
this app does nothing but crash non stop I'm canceling my subscription switching to spotify it's free with adds but at least reliable 😅
And one reviewer offers the single most quantified version of the whole complaint.
So worse over the years. 1. CONSTANT force closures. Last tracked, 10+ per hour.
What This Does Not Show
Three limits, stated plainly.
This is Android only. The App Store rating for the same app is 4.80 from 11.3 million ratings. Nothing here should be read as a claim about Pandora on iPhone.
Negative reviews are a self-selected sample. Of the 4,000 reviews we pulled, 1,927 were 4 or 5 stars, and the 20.6% figure is a share of complaints, not a share of users. It says what people complain about, not how often the app fails.
Every mechanism claim except one is a reviewer's description, not a diagnosis. The exception is the background restriction in step one, which is a documented Android behaviour. We cannot confirm from a review why an app closed, and we are not trying to.
