Gmail Blank Screen: 233 Reviews and One Bad Build (2026)

By Unstar · Editorial Team

Gmail holds 4.08 stars on Google Play and 4.71 on the App Store, and 24.4% of its Android ratings are 1 to 3 stars. We read 3,581 substantial negative US reviews across a continuous 160 day run. 233 describe a blank screen, and the build numbers show two different bugs wearing the same word: one that arrived in May and left, and one that never went away.

Gmail holds 4.08 stars on Google Play from 14,452,116 ratings. The same app holds 4.71 on the App Store from 2,438,796 ratings. That is a 0.63 star gap between two builds of the same product, shipped by the same company, reading the same mailbox.

The Android histogram explains where the gap lives. 2,148,504 of those ratings are a single star, and 3,529,966 of them, 24.4% of everything Google Play has counted, are 1 to 3 stars. For comparison, Facebook's Android histogram puts 11.2% in that band. Roughly one Android rating in four for Google's own mail client is a negative one.

We pulled the 20,000 most recent US Google Play reviews, a continuous run from 12 April to 18 September 2026: 160 days, a review on every one of them, no gap in the daily counts. 8,141 of them were 1 to 3 stars, and 3,581 of those negatives were substantial, meaning at least 120 characters of actual writing rather than a bare "fix it". 69.2% of the substantial negatives were one star.

233 of those 3,581, or 6.5%, describe a blank screen. The inbox opens and shows nothing. An email opens and the body is empty. The back gesture lands on white.

That is the headline number, and on its own it is not very interesting. What we found underneath it is: the word "blank" in this corpus is covering two different problems, one of which arrived in a specific build, spiked, and left, and one of which has been there the whole time.

The Build That Tripled It

Google Play attaches the reviewer's installed build number to most reviews, which lets us ask a question the monthly trend cannot answer: is this complaint evenly spread across releases, or does it pile up on one?

It piles up on one. Here is the share of each build's own substantial negatives that mention a blank screen, for every build with at least 80 substantial negatives in our window:

BuildBlank screen share
2026.05.04.91157226997 of 609 = 15.9%
2026.06.08.9332648056 of 100 = 6.0%
2026.05.11.91873169721 of 361 = 5.8%
2026.08.17.9747523925 of 86 = 5.8%
2026.06.01.92941831511 of 195 = 5.6%
2026.04.27.9107584759 of 163 = 5.5%
2026.05.19.9255118296 of 115 = 5.2%
2026.08.10.96369751411 of 215 = 5.1%
2026.06.15.9363242029 of 196 = 4.6%
2026.07.13.9497600854 of 89 = 4.5%
2026.04.06.8991713349 of 221 = 4.1%
2026.06.29.9439948567 of 208 = 3.4%
2026.07.27.9552975636 of 208 = 2.9%
2026.03.30.8924665321 of 90 = 1.1%

Every build in the window sits between 1.1% and 6.0%, except one, which sits at 15.9%. The May 4 release is not a little worse. It is roughly three times the band every other release occupies.

One caveat about build numbers, because it cuts in our favour rather than against it. The build attached to a review is the one the reviewer had installed, not necessarily the one that broke anything, so the labelling error runs one way: it blurs a real spike across neighbouring builds, it does not invent one. A pile up this concentrated is real.

The Spike Has a Shape: Tablet, Scroll, Flicker

We then read the 97 reviews on that build and the 136 on every other build, and asked what words they use.

May 4 build (97)Every other build (136)
Mentions a tablet41 = 42.3%15 = 11.0%
Mentions scrolling55 = 56.7%20 = 14.7%
Mentions flicker or flash55 = 56.7%23 = 16.9%

The May complaint is not a generic blank screen. It is a tablet, a scroll, and a flicker, and reviewers described it in almost identical language because they were describing the same thing.

same problem suddenly as many others: can no longer read my email on my tablet. The screen flickers and goes blank if I have to scroll to read the message. Gmail app is now essentially useless.

Like many have posted recently, my gmail has also stopped functioning on my galaxy tablet in the last week. It flickers, flashes, and leaves a blank page if I scroll down to try and read any mail.

After the last update, Gmail has not been usable in the portrait mode. it flashes then goes blank. works in landscape mode and on an older device without the upgrsde

That third one is the most diagnostically useful review in the whole corpus. Portrait breaks, landscape works, and an older device that had not taken the update works. That is a reviewer isolating a rendering bug by hand.

I have just the same experience as others when I open an email in my tablet and scroll up it goes blank and I cannot read it uninstalling , clearing cache or data doesn't work.

Several of these reviews begin by saying other people have reported the same thing, which is what a real, sharply timed regression looks like from inside a review list.

And Then It Left

Tablet mentions inside the blank screen cluster, by month: 2 in April, 45 in May, 4 in June, 1 in July, 3 in August, 1 in September.

The overall blank screen share follows the same curve at a lower amplitude: 3.3% in April, 11.6% in May, 4.8% in June, 3.3% in July, 5.3% in August, 2.8% in the first eighteen days of September.

So the May bug was fixed. We are not going to pretend otherwise, and if you came here from a search because your Gmail went blank last week, that specific bug is not what happened to you.

What Is Left Over Is the Interesting Part

Strip out the May spike and the complaint does not go to zero. It goes to a floor of roughly 3% to 6% of substantial negatives, on every build, for the entire 160 day window, across 34 distinct build numbers. Something is producing this complaint continuously, and it is not the tablet bug.

The leftover reviews describe something narrower and more repeatable: the app is fine until you open an email, and the trouble starts when you try to leave it.

update in case my previous update was missed.thank you, I tried those steps and doesn't work. back button after reading an email takes me to a blank screen. i have to close the app and open it again. ridiculous.

I use Android device and this app recently started to show a glitch. After I open an email, when try to go back the screen will be completely blank and I have to shut the app and restart it if I want to use it again.

When I open a new email and finish reading it, all my previous/older emails suddenly disappear from the inbox view, leaving a blank screen. The older emails do not load or show up again until I manually force close the app and restart it.

45 of the 233, or 19.3%, tie the blank screen to opening, reading or clicking into an email. 33, or 14.2%, say the only way out is to force close the app and reopen it, which is exactly what you would expect if a view is being destroyed and not rebuilt rather than data failing to arrive.

Gmail inbox goes completely blank after checking an email. I'm having to uninstall the app and reinstalled it on my phone to be able to see my emails. The app is updated. I'm not sure what's going on.

Every single time I click on the app, It takes me to a blank page, and at the bottom, it shows that I have 99+ emails, but it won't show them to me.

The One Test That Tells You Which Problem You Have

16 of the 233, or 6.9%, mention that the same mailbox is fine somewhere else. That is a small group, and it is the most useful one in the corpus, because it is the difference between a rendering bug and a mail problem.

The app suddenly stopped working on my phone a few days ago. When I open the app, it would appear that I've never received any emails - just a blank screen. Mail is available on my laptop and my tablet.

If your inbox is blank in the Android app but correct in a browser or on another device, nothing is wrong with your mail, your account or your connection. A view failed to draw. Clearing cache, re-adding the account, and checking your password are all aimed at the wrong layer, and 53 of these 233 reviews, 22.7%, describe doing exactly that without result.

48 of the 233, or 20.6%, name a Samsung phone or tablet specifically. We are not going to claim Samsung devices are disproportionately affected, because we cannot: Samsung is the largest Android manufacturer and would dominate any device list in a US corpus by default. What we can say is that the May tablet reports skewed heavily toward Galaxy tablets, and that the leftover reports are not device specific in the same way.

What Actually Gets People Out of It

We sorted the 233 by what reviewers say they tried and what they say happened next. The results are unglamorous.

The things that work, in the order worth trying them:

  • A force stop followed by reopening the app is what 33 reviewers describe as the reliable escape. It is not a fix, it is a reset, but it gets you back to your mail in ten seconds instead of twenty minutes.
  • Try rotating the screen, because one reviewer found landscape worked when portrait did not. If you are on a tablet, this costs nothing to try.
  • Use the device back gesture rather than the app's own back arrow, which a Brazilian reviewer isolated precisely, and which is the single most specific workaround anyone in this corpus reports finding.
  • Open the same mailbox in a browser, and if it renders there your mail is safe and you are waiting on a client update, not losing messages.

The things that reviewers try first and that mostly do not work: clearing cache and storage, uninstalling and reinstalling, and removing and re-adding the account. 53 reviewers describe doing at least one of these, and the reason they keep failing is that none of them touch a drawing bug.

Rolling back the update is the exception, and it is temporary rather than a fix.

It Is Not a US Problem

We ran the same search across 28 more Google Play storefronts in their own languages. Three of them, Spain, Portugal and Saudi Arabia, returned reviews we had already seen, a documented pattern where the store serves one locale's reviews to another. The remaining 25 added 14,550 reviews the US pull had not seen and 1,728 more substantial negatives.

19 of those describe a blank screen. One turned out to be about a Workspace prompt rather than a blank screen, so the real count is 18, across 10 storefronts. We mention the miss because it is the kind of thing a match count hides: the regex returns 19, a human reads 19, and the honest number is 18.

The tablet and flicker signature shows up abroad exactly as it does at home.

And so does the leftover one.

That Portuguese review is the best piece of debugging in either corpus. The blank screen happens when the reviewer uses the app's own back arrow in the top left corner. When they return to the previous screen using the device's own gesture instead, there is no error. A user narrowed a rendering bug to a single control, in a review box, for free.

В чому проблема? Зникло відображення вхідних листів та вихідних у додатку. Кількість відображається, а вміст - ваша папка порожня. Через ПК на браузері все в нормі..

Czech

Do poslední aktualizace bez problémů. Teď nenačte maily, zůstane jen prázdná obrazovka bez menu. Edit: Tento problém se vyskytuje čím dál častěji. Odinstaluji aktualizace - funguje, nainstaluji aktualizace - funguje 1-2 dny, pak se chyba objeví znovu. Takhle je to nepoužitelné, jdu do jiného emsil klienta.

The Ukrainian review is the clean version of the diagnostic test: the message count is displayed, the folder is reported empty, and everything is normal in a browser on a PC. The Czech one is the clean version of the rollback: uninstall the update and it works, reinstall it and it works for one or two days, then it breaks again.

The Bottom Line

Gmail's 4.08 on Google Play is not an accident of one bad month. 24.4% of every rating the store has counted for it is 1 to 3 stars, and the May 4 regression, real as it was, accounts for 97 reviews out of 3,581 substantial negatives in a 160 day window. It is a rounding error against the rating.

The durable finding is the smaller one. A blank screen after opening an email has been present at 3% to 6% of substantial negatives on every single build we measured, it recovers with a force stop rather than a reinstall, it survives cache clears because it is not a data problem, and at least one reviewer traced it to the app's own back control.

If your Gmail is blank right now: open the same mailbox in a browser first. If it looks right there, stop clearing things. Force stop the app, reopen it, and if you are on a tablet, try it in landscape.
