Home Depot App Slow or Not Working? 331 Reviews (2026)

By Unstar · Editorial Team

Home Depot holds 4.82 on iOS but 4.45 on Google Play. We read 331 recent 1-3 star reviews: what is broken, and the workarounds people actually use.

We read 331 recent 1-3 star reviews for The Home Depot app on 4 August 2026, 233 from the US App Store and 98 from US Google Play, and sorted every complaint into themes. Speed was not one problem among many. It was 36.9% of them, nearly three times the next theme. Checkout and cart failures came second at 12.4%, search at 11.2%, and reload loops or crashes at 10.6%.

That distribution is the whole story, and it is why this article is organised around what breaks rather than around features.

Quick Answer: Why Is the Home Depot App So Slow?

Reviewers overwhelmingly blame a recent version rather than their phones. The most common single sentence in the set is some form of "it worked before the update." People report the same behaviour on new phones, on WiFi and on cellular, on Android and on iPhone, and after reinstalling. A large share of the 1-star reviews name version 8.0.4 on Android specifically.

The app is not down. It loads, it just responds slowly enough that reviewers abandon carts and buy elsewhere. That is a different problem from an outage and it does not show up on status pages.

The Store Ratings Hide It

StoreRatingRatings count
Google Play4.45990,191
App Store (iOS)4.823,378,334

A 4.45 and a 4.82 both look healthy. The gap between them is the signal: 0.37 stars is wide for the same app from the same company in the same month, and it points at the Android build. Google Play reviewers are markedly angrier, and the Android version number appears far more often in complaints than the iOS one.

Averages this large are also slow to move. An app with 990,000 ratings can ship a badly received update and barely dent its score, which is exactly why reading the recent 1-3 star reviews tells you more than the number on the listing.

Top Complaints in Home Depot 1-3 Star Reviews

Percentages are shares of the 331 negative reviews we read, assigned to the complaint each review leads with.

1. Painfully Slow, Freezing, Sometimes Unusable (36.9%)

The dominant theme by a wide margin. Reviewers describe waiting on screens that used to be instant, typing that outruns the app, and taps landing on the wrong item because the list shifted while it loaded.

Why is this app so slow and glitchy? I have used it on and off WiFi, in and out of the store. App is completely updated. Any time I try to use it, it is trash. Takes me 20 mins to look up 3 things when it could have taken me 5 minutes on a desktop.

With recent updates when searching products the app is really sluggish each time I type a letter it tries to search an typing takes forever

Despite the new version this app is very very slow to open. They took something that worked and now it# like using my dialup modem from the 80s

For at least the past 3 days the app is running really slow and freezing. All other apps on my phone are running fine.

Note the last one. Reviewers pre-empt the obvious reply by pointing out that every other app on the same phone is fine. That pattern repeats often enough in the set to be worth taking seriously.

2. Cart and Checkout Fail at the Last Step (12.4%)

The most expensive failure, because it happens after someone has decided to buy. Items do not land in the cart, carts empty themselves, and checkout stalls.

App crashes/freezes and is actually unusable. Unable to view products add them to cart or purchase. Searched online and many others report these same issues recently.

When adding items into my cart, it takes a long time to update it. Sometimes it does not even add it to the cart. I can not run a business this way. Waste of time.

Lots of glitches ordered five things only shows one then suddenly my car is empty. It was just a mess. It took half an hour to make a simple

Unable to add anything to the cart. App forces an insurance banner even though you click No. The Insurance banner prevents the ability to add anything to the cart.

That last complaint is the most specific and the most fixable: a promotional interstitial blocking the add-to-cart action.

3. Search That Returns Nothing or the Wrong Thing (11.2%)

For a retail app with a catalogue this size, search is the product. Reviewers report blank results, results that cannot be tapped, and a keyboard that cannot keep up.

You updated your app but the search results come back inconsistently. Some results can not be clicked as the page keeps cycling through or looping through content.

This app sucks, cannot even do a simple search!! Please fix this Home Depot, if I cannot search for a product, how can I buy it???

The letters are not even keeping up as I type them which makes it really hard to see if what I am typing is correct.

There needs to be a way to turn off the AI and all the different pop ups that appear. Just let me search for what I need, I know better than your terrible bots.

The last one is a recurring frustration: reviewers say assistant prompts and promotions now sit between them and the search box.

4. Reload Loops, Crashes, and Blank Screens (10.6%)

Current update to app has broken the app for me. When looking for items to buy online app keep reloading page every 2-4 seconds making it annoying when trying to look and read item details.

Not sure what happened, but the app no longer works, just gives me a something happened, please refresh message and never refreshes. I made sure the app was updated. Same message.

Lately the Home Depto App is horrible, verrry slow and glitching, it is the only app that overheats my phone

A reload loop every two to four seconds is the clearest signal in the whole set that this is a client bug rather than a slow connection.

5. In-Store Tools That Used to Work (1.8%)

Small by share, large by consequence, because finding an item in a warehouse store is the main reason to open the app while standing in one.

Removed the functionality of showing where the item is in store. It has been absolutely terrible experience from what it used to be.

It used to be easy to switch stores, but now I can not do it at all. Now I have to go back to asking associates for help. Lowes app works great, looks like I am headed there

In-store purchases do not show up in purchase history despite all of them being made with a Pro/Military account.

6. Sign-In and Account Creation Blocked (1.5%)

Apparently you have to create an account to order something but the app would not let me create an account. Every time I try to create an account, it says there is a tech issue and to try again later.

The login does not work and it has not for months through several updates. It will not progress past the email entry, the account information works just fine on the website.

What Actually Helps

None of this is a subscription problem, so there is nothing to cancel. The workarounds reviewers report using, in rough order of how often they appear:

  • Use the mobile website instead of the app. The single most common workaround in the set. Reviewers report the site is faster than the app for search and checkout, which is unusual and tells you where the problem is.
  • Buy on desktop, pick up in store. Several reviewers describe building the order on a computer and using the app only for the pickup barcode.
  • Reinstalling mostly does not help. Reviewers who tried it say so explicitly. Do it once, then stop treating it as the fix.
  • Check whether you are on the newest version before blaming your phone. Complaints cluster on specific builds, so the version you are on matters more than the device.
  • For in-store aisle lookups, ask an associate. Reviewers report this is now faster than waiting for the app, which is a damning thing to have to write about a retail app.

Is the Home Depot App Safe?

Nothing in these reviews suggests a trust or security problem. There are no reports of unauthorised charges, mystery subscriptions, or data misuse, which is the pattern you see in genuinely shady apps. This is a performance and quality story, not a scam story. If you want the trust angle specifically, see is Home Depot legit.

The Bottom Line

The Home Depot app is not broken in the sense of not working. It is slow enough that a third of unhappy reviewers lead with speed, and slow enough that reviewers describe abandoning purchases and walking to a competitor. The 4.45 on Google Play against 4.82 on iOS is the clearest quantitative hint that the Android build is the weaker one.

If it is unusable for you right now, the mobile website is the workaround reviewers keep landing on. Read the current 1-3 star reviews yourself on the Home Depot review page, check the iOS listing to compare platforms, or see shopping apps with better complaint ratios.
