Garmin Connect Not Syncing: 131 Reviews, 6 Builds (2026)

By Unstar · Editorial Team

Garmin Connect holds 4.36 stars from 1,105,101 Google Play ratings. We read 557 substantial negative reviews across six comparable builds: five sit between 21.7% and 29.0% negative, and 5.27.3 sits at 38.0%. Plus a pairing box that lost a digit.

Your watch is on your wrist. Your phone is in your pocket. They are eighteen inches apart and they cannot find each other.

Garmin Connect holds 4.36 stars from 1,105,101 Google Play ratings on more than 50 million installs, and 822,292 of those ratings, 74.4% of them, are five stars. The iPhone version sits at 4.39 from 58,229 ratings. By app-store standards that is a healthy product attached to hardware people genuinely like. The negative reviews are almost never about the watch.

Quick Answer: Is It You, or Is It the Build You Are On?

It is very likely the build. We read 3,000 US Google Play reviews covering 23 February to 27 August 2026, filtered to 557 substantial 1-3 star complaints, and confirmed 131 that describe the app failing to do its one structural job: get data off the watch and onto the phone. That is 23.5% of every real complaint in the window. More usefully, the complaint rate is not spread evenly. Six builds in this corpus have 345 or more reviews each, which makes them fairly comparable. Five of them sit between 21.7% and 29.0% negative. The sixth, 5.27.3, the build most people were on in August 2026, sits at 38.0%.

How We Read These Reviews

We pulled the 3,000 most recent US Google Play reviews on 27 August 2026. Of those, 922 were 1-3 stars, and 557 were long enough to describe something concrete, which is our bar of 120 characters.

From that pool a keyword pass produced 147 candidates. We read them and dropped 16 as off-topic: complaints about battery drain, warranty service, third-party sync to Strava or MyFitnessPal, and one where "disconnected" turned out to mean a support chat ending. That is a 10.9% error rate on the keyword pass, and it is stated here because it is the difference between a search result and a finding. What remains is 131 confirmed reviews, each in exactly one bucket.

Two honest caveats about the version numbers below. First, a review carries the build the reviewer had installed, not necessarily the build that broke things, so the mapping is directional rather than exact. Second, a point release that ships and is superseded within a day or two collects very few reviews, and those few skew toward people who hit a bug immediately. That is why we are only comparing the six builds with 345 or more reviews and ignoring the ones with a handful.

One Build Out of Six Does Not Look Like the Others

Five builds in a nine-point band. Then a jump of nine points on its own, on a sample the same size as the others, over a full four weeks of use.

One thing this table does not say: it does not say 5.27.3 broke a new thing. We checked. The share of that build's substantial complaints that fall in our connection buckets is 26.1%, which is ordinary; 5.22.1 was 26.9% and 5.26.1 was 25.4%. The July line did not invent a failure category. There is simply more of everything.

What Happened in July

The 5.27 line arrived fast. The first review in this corpus tagged 5.27 is dated 22 July 2026, 5.27.1 appears on 23 July, 5.27.2 on 24 July and 5.27.3 on 30 July. Four builds in nine days.

The 23rd and 24th of July are also where the tightest cluster in the whole corpus sits. Eight reviews across six months use the phrase "loading error". Three of them were written on those two days.

yay as of todays update 23 July you broke most of the tiles.Yesterday and 7 day tiles no longer load. the Steps on InFocus panel fails too load as does last activity..

All my old data have gone missing since I installed the latest version of the app. Most of my data just say "loading error" I haven't been able to upload any data either. Please fix this ASAP!

information on home page is showing a loading error. Have tried refreshing, clearing cache, clearing data and nothing. About to say goodbye to Garmin and go somewhere else

The same wording turns up months earlier, so this is not unique to July. One reviewer quotes the on-screen string in full, another quotes the short form.

Loading errors on at least half of the metrics. Lifestyle logging is gone! *poof* Garmin, what did you do? Your awesome app is ruined! Everything says "Loading Error - We had a problem loading this feature"

Second day of my Garmin forerunner 55 watch and I'm struggling to sync data with the Garmin connect app. "Loading error.

And a review from the end of the month names the date directly.

The July 31 app update causes crashes, failure to load logs, and prevents the app from opening. I have reset the phone and watch multiple times, and cleared the cache, but it's still not working.

What is notable is not that a release had bugs. It is that four rapid patches later, at the end of August, 5.27.3 is still the worst-rated build in this corpus by a wide margin. Every previous patch release landed back inside the normal band. This one did not.

The Pairing Code That Lost a Digit

The clearest single defect in the corpus is also the smallest cluster, and it is worth its own section because it is unambiguous, dated, and confirmed in two languages.

Six reviewers describe the same thing: the watch displays a six-digit pairing code, and the app's input box accepts only five characters. Five of those six are on 5.27.3, all in August 2026.

Problem with pairing, the 6 digit passkey box only allows to enter 5 digits, hence can never pair successfully. Please fix!

For some reason, I can no longer connect my forerunner 245 which I've had for 7 years as my Garmin Connect app only allows input for 5 digits, not the 6 that's showing on my watch. Is this a bug or a feature??

Worked ok but now disconnected from device and trying to reconnect them the app wants a five digit code but phone produces a 6 digit code, so I can't reconnect them 🙄

Can not connect to Garmin Instinct Solar Camo. The pairing code showed 6 digits at the Garmin Watch but I only can input limited max 5 digits on this apps. Can not make pairing at all.

Then, from the German store, written on 24 August 2026 by someone who had never read those reviews:

German

App ist nutzlos geworden. Der Verbindungscode wurde von 6 auf 5 Stellen gekürzt....keine Verbindung mehr zu meiner Garmin Uhr möglich.

That translates to: the connection code was shortened from six digits to five, and no connection to my Garmin watch is possible any more. Independent reports, two languages, two storefronts, one build. There is no interpretation needed here.

The Watch Will Not Stay Connected (42 Reviews)

The largest bucket by a distance. The pattern is not a failure to connect once; it is a connection that will not hold, and a re-pairing flow that treats a watch you have owned for years as a brand new device.

Keeps losing connection to the watch so I have to repair it (Fenix 5s) I would not mind this, if it didnt ask me to set it up like a new device every. single. time.

Constantly reconnecting my devices. Forgets my paired watch connection, making me go through the pairing process over and over.

I've used garmin for years now and since the last couple of updates my watch keeps disconnecting from my phone. EVERY TIME I need to upload a workout I need to go all over again through the pairing process.

in the past four months, this app has taken a major nosedive. It disconnects from your watch every time it is opened.

Several tie it to a specific update.

latest update has broken the connectivity to my watch. I have found myself having to reconnect my watch every day or so. LIke the initial pairing sequence.

This latest update has broken pairing mode. My Forerunner 254 is now continually disconnecting itself from the app on my phone, even after pairing it manually from within the watch and the Garmin Connect app.

got an update yesterday and now it's even worse! I can't leave the room without it disconnecting my watch keeps disconnecting from my phone since a recent update.

And one describes the consequence in the only terms that matter to someone who spent several hundred dollars on hardware.

When it actually is connected to my vivo active 5 works great. However, watch lost connection to phone and will not reconnect.

The App Will Not Open (20 Reviews)

A distinct failure: the app never gets past its own splash screen. Reviewers describe the same black screen with the word Connect in the middle.

The app will not even open. I have uninstalled, and reinstalled it and still nothing. It just had a black screen that says connect in the middle.

App fails to run since last update. Gets stuck on intro screen. Only way to get in is to force quit and restart the app or power cycle the phone.

The app freezes on the launch screen. One star. The app still freezes at the launch screen, still one star.

the latest update is making it take forever to open, I'm not sure what's wrong but please fix it!

Connected, But Nothing Moves (18 Reviews)

The subtlest bucket, and the one most likely to cost you a workout. The phone shows the watch as connected. The watch shows the activity. The app shows neither.

My Fenix 5S hasn't been able to sync an activity for months? years? It connects to my phone, the app sees the watch, I hit refresh to sync and it just does nothing even though there are activities on the watch.

Don't know what happened since the last update, but now nothing syncs. I just get daily steps on main screen but nothing syncs past that.

June 2026 update causes watch to not sync. I've used this for several years and this is the first time I have issues.

App has worked so well for years and as of a few days ago I have to reconnect my watch from scratch to get it to sync. This part of the ecosystem needs to 'just work'.

It Needs the Internet to Show Data You Already Have (15 Reviews)

This bucket is not a bug at all, and that is exactly why it belongs in the article. Fifteen reviewers independently worked out that Garmin Connect is a cloud client: the data goes from the watch to the phone to Garmin's servers and back, so with no signal the app has little to show you, even for days you have already synced.

App works fine. The only gripe I have is the app evidently doesn't store any data on the phone. Why do I need a data connection to see my sleep data for the past few days?

App is useless if there is no internet and as of yesterday it taking 5+ mins to view anything.

it has a lot of useful features. but in a lot of ways, this app is useless. it doesn't store anything on your phone. maybe you like that.

without service or data connection, this app will not operate. Garmin mostly being a very outdoorsy company, youd think that this app would let me view my watch data, and other biometrics on my phone just with either Bluetooth and or NFC but ig not, it's useless in the middle of nowhere

Two describe hitting this where it hurts most, which for this brand is a pointed place to hit it.

Very disappointed. Been in mountain without GSM connection for 2 weeks. Was tracking every move, but could not sync with a smartphone, because of lack of internet.

You can't upload a gpx from phone to watch without an internet connection.

If you are buying a Garmin for the backcountry, this is the single most useful line in the corpus, and no review count will change it. It is a design decision, not a defect, and it will not be patched.

The Update Took Something Away (13 Reviews)

A smaller group, but sharply consistent: reviewers naming a specific editing function that disappeared in the July line.

Recent update has removed core functionality: I can no longer see my latest activity on the home page; I can't edit an activity to trim times; I can't add my used gear to an activity.

version 5.27.3 took away the ability to edit the logged workout that the Garmin watch entered. thats what I liked most about the app. please restore this feature.

Similar to others, the latest update removed the 3 dots and the ability to edit your workouts. I use a recumbent exercise bike and have to manually add my mileage at the completion of my ride.

Since the July update I can no longer edit activities in the app - so cannot change 'other' activity to 'walking' for example. The Website is just as restricted - very poor.

Eighteen Other Storefronts Say the Same Thing

Garmin sells everywhere, so we swept 24 more storefronts. Six of them returned the US set byte for byte and were discarded, which left 18 unique stores and 3,600 additional reviews, of which 380 are substantial negatives. Ninety-six of those 380 are about the connection, and they read like translations of the US ones.

The German store is the loudest with 22, then Russian and Dutch at 13 each, French and Turkish at 11, Italian at 8.

One detail from the Turkish store is worth stating plainly, because it cuts against the July story: the same disconnection complaint appears there in reviews from 2024 and 2025, not just 2026. Whatever 5.27.3 made worse, it did not start it.

What This Corpus Does Not Show

Three things, so nobody reads more into the table than it holds.

It does not show that Garmin's hardware is unreliable. Thirty-one reviewers name their watch and most of them are complimentary about it in the same sentence that condemns the app.

It does not show a rising trend across the year. Month by month, the confirmed group as a share of substantial complaints runs 7.5%, 28.3%, 15.7%, 20.7%, 19.4%, 32.6% and 27.3% from February to August. February covers only six days of reviews. The rest is noisy, with no clean direction. The version table is the sharper instrument, not the calendar.

And it does not show what share of all users are affected. These are 131 people out of 50 million installs who were annoyed enough to write more than two sentences. What the numbers support is a comparison between builds, not a population estimate.

What This Adds Up To

Garmin Connect is rated 4.36 by more than a million people, and three quarters of those ratings are five stars. Nothing here argues with that.

What the corpus does say is narrower and more actionable. The one job this app has that no other app can do for you is move data from a wrist to a phone, and 23.5% of its substantial complaints are about that job failing. The largest single bucket, 42 reviews, is a connection that will not stay up. The clearest single defect, six reports in two languages, is an input box that accepts five characters when the watch shows six. And the build most people were using at the end of August 2026 was rated negatively at 38.0%, against a 21.7% to 29.0% band for every comparable build before it.

The pattern in the earlier data is mildly reassuring, with the caveat that those feature releases carry small samples: 5.22 and 5.23 each drew fewer than a hundred reviews here, both at rates above 45%, and both had a patch that landed back inside the normal band within weeks. The July line is the exception, and it is the one build where the sample is large enough to be sure. Three patches in nine days, then four more weeks, and 5.27.3 is still the outlier.

If you are on 5.27.3 and your watch keeps dropping, this corpus suggests the honest answer is that it is not your phone, your Bluetooth settings or your watch. Seventeen people already tried all of that.
