eBay's Forced AI Listing: 57 Seller Reviews (2026)

By Unstar · Editorial Team

eBay holds 4.54 stars from 5,018,756 Google Play ratings. We read 4,163 substantial negative reviews from a 211 day window and hand-verified 57 that describe the app forcing AI into the seller listing flow. The share rose every month we measured, from 0.60% in February 2026 to 6.11% in the first twelve days of September, and 24 of the 57 ask for an off switch.

eBay sellers have been asking the same question in review after review since February 2026, and the wording barely changes: where is the switch that turns this off?

The new eBay listing process is a joke. There is no proper manual listing option in the app, so you are forced to use AI. It listed my cycling jacket as a poncho, chose the wrong condition, price, description and item details.

I used to use EBay in mobile for everything. Now I'm serious, it is completely useless. I tried listing an item and I am FORCED to use eBay AI to list it. I can't just make and item with a listing and type in the info myself. There is no way to change this setting.

This piece counts that complaint. Not whether AI belongs in a listing tool, but how many people who sell through the eBay Android app write a review saying the app now makes them use it, and whether that number is moving.

What We Read

We pulled the 14,000 most recent US Google Play reviews for the eBay app on 12 September 2026, along with the live store listing. The listing shows 4.54 stars from 5,018,756 ratings on more than 100 million installs. On the App Store the same app holds 4.82 from 4,969,079 ratings, version 6.273.0, released 12 September 2026. Nothing below is an iOS measurement. We read Android only.

The 14,000 reviews cover 13 February 2026 to 12 September 2026, 211 days with no gap in the middle, which is what makes the monthly counts further down comparable. Of the 14,000, 6,480 are 1-3 stars, and 4,163 of those are 100 characters or longer, which is our bar for a review that describes something rather than just rates it. 77.4% of those 4,163 are one star.

Then the screen. We took every substantial negative that mentions AI in any spelling and also uses a listing word: list, listing, sell, seller, draft, description, title, photo, camera or scan. That returned 175 reviews. We read all 175 and kept only the ones describing eBay's AI inside the seller's own listing flow. 57 survived. The other 118 are about different machines wearing the same word: the support chatbot, automated moderation that removes listings, AI written descriptions on other people's listings, and the AI content filling the home screen. Those are real complaints and several of them are worse than this one, but they are not this one.

Quick Answer: Is eBay Forcing Sellers to Use AI to List?

Reviewers say the mobile listing flow now starts with an AI step they cannot skip, and the share of complaints saying so has gone up every month we measured. In February 2026, 0.60% of substantial negative reviews described it. In August it was 2.45%, and in the first twelve days of September it was 6.11%, a tenfold rise across the window. Of the 57 verified reviews, 24 explicitly ask for an off switch or state that there is none, which is the single most repeated sentence in the set. Reviewers describe the flow opening the camera first, generating a title, category, condition and suggested price from a photo, and then requiring them to correct all of it, which several say takes longer than writing the listing themselves would have. Four say the only workaround they found is to abandon the phone and finish the listing in a desktop browser. Three name the tool: two call it the Magical Lister or the Magic AI listing tool, one calls it ebay.ai. The same complaint appears in German, French and Italian reviews from the same weeks, and the German reviewers have a word for it: Zwangs KI, forced AI.

The Count, Month by Month

Each month below is every substantial negative review in that month, and how many of them are in the verified 57. February starts on the 13th and September stops on the 12th, because that is where the corpus starts and ends, so those two rows are partial months. The percentages are still comparable, because they are shares rather than totals.

MonthSubstantial negativesForced AI listingShare
Feb 2026 (13-28)33220.60%
Mar 202671450.70%
Apr 202670250.71%
May 202651140.78%
Jun 202653961.11%
Jul 202656571.24%
Aug 2026571142.45%
Sep 2026 (1-12)229146.11%

Two things in that table matter more than the trend line. The first is that the complaint is not new. The oldest two reviews in the set are both from 14 February 2026, the first day of the corpus, which means the rollout predates everything we can see.

I've been using eBay for a decade now. After a few months off it, I went to sell something and they were trying to use AI to enhance my listing.

The second is that 28 of the 57 land in the last six weeks, and they carry app versions: 6.269.0.2 appears seven times, 6.271.0.3 six times, 6.270.0.2 five times, 6.272.0.2 three times. A complaint that had been trickling in at four or five a month from scattered builds started arriving from one narrow band of releases.

1. The Off Switch That Is Not There

Twenty five of the 57 matched a scan for opt out, turn off, disable, bypass, skip or optional. Reading them removed one that was talking about customer service menus rather than the listing flow, leaving 24 verified. What is striking is how similar they are. These are not people arguing about machine learning. They are people looking for a settings toggle and reporting that they cannot find one.

This AI listing tool is incredibly intrusive & forceful. There needs to be an option to turn it off. I prefer to manually create & fill my listings.

bloated with terrible AI, If you want to make a listing you're forced to use the AI and it does a terrible job. And there's no way I could find to turn it off. An AI does NOT need to be part of this process.

well, now the only way to post is Ai. they force the Ai tool on you and theres no way to turn it off. I deleted the app and won't be returning to the service in general as a seller.

The new listing tool is a nightmare. I hate being forced to use AI and it gets things wrong and then I have to edit things myself like I would have anyway. I hate how it now makes me edit things in order and then click a new screen for the next section.

Absolutely not. This automatic AI uploader makes listing SO much more difficult!! Please, please let us turn it off

The request is consistently modest. Almost nobody in this set asks eBay to remove the feature. They ask for it to be optional, and several of them say they would use it if it worked.

2. What the Tool Gets Wrong

The second half of the complaint is accuracy, and it is specific in a way that is easy to check against your own listing. Reviewers say the AI reads the photo and fills in the item, the category, the condition and a suggested price, and then they spend the time they saved fixing it.

get rid of ebay selling AI. It matches your item with generic img scanning, $100 item showing as $12 suggested price with generic title..

This app was a solid 4 stars until they started pushing the Ebay AI tool on sellers. Now I can't seem to create a listing without it taking over. Whereas before i could paste in my template for my listing, edit and upload, now i have to wait for it to generate this garbage, change the useless title, correct the price that it has guesstimated, update the category which it has also gotten very wrong.

The wrong condition is the one with money attached. A used item listed as new invites a return, and a suggested price far below the market is a sale at that price if the seller does not catch it.

Forced into AI listing that autofills every detail incorrectly for all but the most common items. Makes listing something take 2x longer and it's 100x more irritating

the AI assist for listing an item is horrible. I can't seem to bypass it anymore. I prefer putting everything manually so that what I list is actually accurate and not completely wrong.

3. The Workaround Is a Desktop Browser

Four of the 57 describe the same escape hatch, and one of them says customer support is where they learned it. This is the closest thing to an answer in the whole corpus, and it is worth noting that it is not an answer about the app at all.

(For sellers) They added a new feature that makes AI do the listing for you. Makes, not let's, you cannot opt out unless you use a normal web browser as told to me after I went to customer support about this I'm sure it's only a matter of time before they force it there too.

I can't list any listing from my phone, it's ridiculous I have to draft it with AI on my phone and later open it on my laptop and click "list". the app gives no error or explanation

the ai is terrible can no longer list things on my phone due to items being identified as wrong. my advice to eBay give sellers the option to list the old way.. have to now use pc to list items if I was a trader I'd have stopped using eBay already

4. The Tool Has a Name

Three reviewers name the thing. One of them also dates their own encounter with it, which is the closest the corpus comes to a rollout note.

I happily used ebay as a seller for 15 years. This week there was a button that said, try the Magic AI listing tool. Tool is garbage forces you to start you listing with an AI picture/scan, and does not identify items correctly or take clear pictures for the listing.

The new listing layout is the WORST update/change eBay has ever made and I've been a seller for over 15 years!

Not Everyone Wants It Gone

This is where a review corpus earns its keep, because the opposite complaint exists too. Six reviews in the wider 175 are angry in the other direction. Two of them, from May and July, say the photo first flow was taken away from them and they want it back. One says a card scanning feature was removed. One says an update broke the AI features they were using. One says the AI photo editor worked well until it stopped. One says the AI interface is the only part of selling on eBay they like.

change this listing tool back! you used to be able to just upload photos and AI would create a listing and fill out all the details.

The new listing mode just applied is awful to use . It takes forever to make a new listing. You have to click and edit to many details and specifics. quadrupling the time it takes to make a listing. I want the listing Ai back from just a few days ago.

Six is small against 57, and the two groups may not even be describing the same build. But it is a reminder that "sellers hate this" is a simplification. What the 57 actually say, over and over, is that they want to choose.

The Same Complaint in German, French and Italian

We then requested eBay reviews from 29 language and country combinations, 15,575 unique reviews in total. 600 of them, the entire British set, were already in the American corpus, because Google's review feed buckets by language rather than by country, and the Australian and Canadian requests returned that same set with nothing new at all. After removing them, 1,741 substantial negatives remain across 25 non-English buckets, the largest being German with 247, French with 133 and Russian with 117.

Screening those for AI plus a listing word in the local language, then reading the matches, gives 17 verified reviews in three languages: 13 German, 2 French, 2 Italian. The earliest is German, dated 27 July 2026. German reviewers coined the tidiest label for it.

German

Zwangs KI!

German

Vollkommen unübersichtlich. Update: minimal besser als letztes Jahr. Immer noch schlechter als vor 2 Jahren. Update: KI macht jetzt zwangsweise den Verkauf. Alles ist falsch eingetragen, eine NICHT-KI-OPTION fehlt.

The French and Italian reviews are shorter and say the same thing, including one that names the model it thinks is behind the tool.

What This Does Not Show

We did not install the app and try to list something. Everything above is what reviewers wrote. We cannot tell you from this corpus whether a setting exists somewhere that 24 people failed to find, and if one does, the fact that they failed to find it is still the finding.

A rising share is not a rising count of affected sellers. The share of complaints went up tenfold. That could mean more sellers hit the flow, or it could mean the same sellers got angrier and louder while other complaint types quieted down. The monthly totals of substantial negatives moved very little across the window, between 511 and 714, which argues against the denominator explaining the change, but it does not prove the mechanism.

Fifty seven is small. It is 1.37% of 4,163 substantial negatives across seven months. Most people who list something on eBay are not writing a review about it. What this measures is the shape and the trend of a specific complaint, not how many sellers the feature reaches.

We read Android only, and mostly the United States. eBay holds 4.82 stars from nearly five million App Store ratings against 4.54 on Google Play. Nothing here says whether the iOS listing flow behaves the same way.

Nobody writes a review when a listing goes up cleanly. The 57 are, by construction, the people who had a reason to complain.
