Does Upside Pay? 219 Reviews, 6 Ways It Stalls (2026)

By Unstar · Editorial Team

Upside holds 4.55 stars from 450,782 Google Play ratings, 79.7% of them five stars. We read 670 negative reviews from nearly four months: 219 are about money that did not arrive, 115 of those are a claim that never cleared, and 28 describe it paying first and stopping later.

You claimed the offer before you pumped. You used the card that is linked to the app. You kept the receipt. Three weeks later the transaction still says "Needs Review", and the chatbot wants a bank statement.

Upside holds 4.55 stars from 450,782 Google Play ratings on more than 10 million installs, and 359,340 of those ratings, 79.7% of them, are five stars. The iOS app is rated 4.79 from 678,508 ratings. By the numbers this is one of the better rated cash back apps on either store. The negative reviews are a different document, and almost all of them are about one question: does the money actually arrive?

Quick Answer: Does Upside Actually Pay?

Yes, and then for a lot of people it stops. We read 670 substantial negative reviews from the US Google Play store covering 7 May to 27 August 2026 and confirmed 219 that are about the money, which is 32.7% of every real complaint in the window. Twenty-eight of those 219 explicitly describe the app working first and failing later, usually after the first cash out. The biggest single group, 115 reviews, is a claim that never gets paid: 35 say "needs review", 19 say it is stuck processing, 14 say the app cannot find a transaction they can see on their own card statement, and 3 were denied outright. Another 35 earned the money and could not get it out.

We cannot see your account, your card feed or Upside's matching system. Everything below is what reviewers describe. What is measurable is how often each description appears, whether it moves month to month, and whether it tracks a particular build.

What We Read

We pulled the 3,300 most recent Google Play reviews from the US storefront, which reach back from 27 August 2026 to 7 May 2026. Of those, 867 were rated 1 to 3 stars and 670 had enough text to categorise. By month that is 190 in May (partial, the window opens on the 7th), 147 in June, 182 in July and 151 in August (partial, the window closes on the 27th).

A keyword net for anything about cash back, claims, receipts, transactions, payouts, cash outs, bonuses or PayPal returned 235 candidates. We read all of them and dropped 16 that were about something else: the app not loading, gas prices at partner stations being higher than the discount, station coverage, a duplicate-account mix up. That is a 6.8% false positive rate, low because in a cash back app almost every complaint really is about money. It leaves 219 confirmed, each assigned to exactly one fault so the numbers add up instead of double counting. One hundred and sixty of the 219, 73.1%, are one star.

Upside is a US and Canada service, so there is no meaningful non-US corpus to compare against, and we are not going to invent one.

Where the Money Gets Stuck

The complaints are not scattered. They line up along the path a dollar has to travel, and each stage has its own failure.

Stage 1: The Claim That Never Clears (115 reviews)

This is the fault that defines the corpus. It is 52.5% of the confirmed set and 17.2% of every substantial negative review in the window. The reviewer did the whole ritual, and the credit does not appear.

Thirty-five of the 115 name the status "needs review" or "under review". It is the single most quoted phrase in the entire corpus.

Completely useless app. Every receipt you submit will ultimately say "Needs Review", and they'll never give you cash back. Don't waste your time. This app is a scam.

Doesn't work 75% of the time. I make sure I use the correct card, and I don't get my cash back. it always says it needs a review.

I haven't gotten cash back since July. everytime it says need review. whether I use a receipt or a verified cc. I get the the response.

Nineteen describe a transaction that simply sits in processing and then ages out.

This app is a scam now. You don't get any money back. They label every transaction pending, then it says needs review, then it's too old to pay out.

Fourteen describe the sharper version, where the app tells them a purchase it should be able to see does not exist.

this is a scam app they just want your info. I up loaded a card and used that card at every location the app told me to and every time they would send an email saying they cant find the transaction.

This app isn't worth the trouble. It is very limited in the stores it works with and the cash back is miniscule when you can actually get cash back. Most of the time, it claims that it can't find the transaction even though the card used is the correct one.

The remaining 44 describe the same outcome without naming a status word. Several of them count their own hit rate, which is the most useful thing in the bucket because it turns a feeling into a fraction.

Don't expect automatic payments. Always screenshot fuel offers and photo copy receipts. I have a success rate of 5% payment without contacting customer support.

update: if you look at the response below it is exactly what they do when you use the app. They do not listen or care. If it worked I am sure that it would be good, however 8 out 10 transactions they "Can't find a record" and then when you go get help its a bot that does everything except let you submit proof for the first 10 responses.

This app is not worth it to me. I have made 7 claims and only 2 has went through. It took each one over 10 days to review.

Stage 2: Money Earned, Money Not Out (35 reviews)

Thirty-five reviewers got past the claim stage, watched a balance build, and then could not extract it. The failures split fairly evenly between a cash out that never arrives, a gift card code that never emails, and an account that gets locked at exactly the wrong moment.

They are not paying out the money you earn. I cashed out with a gift card which is supposed to take 48 hours to process. it's been a week and a half and I still haven't got my money.

I have a decent sum of money. I want to redeem $50 from the app, and the code never showed up in my email. I used the chat-bot to no avail.

I cashed put recently and haven't received the payout and its been more than 3 weeks. I've tried reaching out to customer service and still no reply.

One reviewer describes a redemption link with a 24 hour expiry that did not work, which is the worst possible combination of a deadline and a broken button.

Don't get scammed! You put it all this work to go to their places for a little extra pocket change, but then when you get enough to cash out, they make it impossible to get your money! There is no customer support. All the site and app do is send you to articles answering common questions that are not helpful.

Another warns specifically about one of the cash out options, and the detail is precise enough to act on.

DO NOT USE THE VIRTUAL VISA TO CASH OUT. Other gift card options work. The visa is useless. Absolutely nothing will accept it. Doesn't even work if you add it to a digital wallet.

And one long-running account describes both stages failing at once: pending rewards for months, then a suspension when they tried to withdraw.

At some point all my rewards got stuck in pending. by the time I noticed it had been 6 months. I reached out I was just told it was an odd situation they didn't know how to fix.

Stage 3: The Rate Collapses (25 reviews)

Twenty-five reviewers are not saying they were cheated on a transaction. They are saying the offers themselves shrank until the app stopped being worth the detour. The number they keep landing on is one cent per gallon.

started out decent but after a month or so they dropped my cash back rewards down to next to nothing. when I first started using upside I could expect to see usually around 10 cents per gallon cash back.

It's a big bait and switch to get your purchasing info for targeted marketing. The first few fillups I was getting .15-.18 cents per gallon back. Now it's .01 cent per gallon.

you guys do not pay out much anymore 1 cents I can go to chain gas station and save more please do better what happened to the 25 cents plus

This is the one bucket where a reviewer explicitly credits the app for paying, and complains only about how little.

the App is legit, it pays out as advertised...the reason only 3 stars is it used to pay out more money .. recently only getting 1 cent per gallon....not really worth using for a penny a gallon

One reviewer reports being told by Upside, in a reply to their review, that offers are personalised per user. We are relaying what the reviewer says they were told, not confirming a pricing model.

Bait and switch. Cash back is 99% $0.01/gallon. No longer worth the effort. They make way more selling your data to be this cheap.

Stage 4: PayPal Left in July (20 reviews)

Twenty reviews are about the payout method rather than the payout. Nine of them were written in the six days from 22 to 27 July 2026, which is the tightest cluster anywhere in this corpus and the closest thing to a datable event in it.

upside just announced that they will no longer support cash transfer to paypal. To cash out, you will now have to give them access to your bank account. This is a decision I do not support. reply to your response.

Upside no longer allows you to pay out using PayPal. Your options are a bank account (hopefully your bank is supported, mine isn't) or gift cards. No PayPal makes this app useless to me.

I'm not giving you my bank log in information! I've been using the app for 5 or 6 years now and they take paypal away. I don't understand why you would need to change that.

The objection is consistent and it is not really about convenience. It is about handing bank credentials to an app in exchange for gas money.

Will no longer be using this app since PayPal withdrawals have been removed. Now I have $140 that I'll have to take in usless gift cards.

they took away cashing out to PayPal. my lifetime earnings are just under $1400. I've been using this app since it was "Get Upside" bring back the PayPal option!

Stage 5: Paid Less Than the Offer (17 reviews)

The smallest measurable stage, 17 reviews, is also the most specific: the offer said one number, the deposit was another. Fifteen of the 17 are one star, the highest one-star rate of any bucket here.

Scam. Bought 10 gallons of gas. At .52 cash back. First they couldn't find it. I had to send bank statement to prove it. Then I got $1.61 cash back? Should have been $5.20 back.

Upside is a ripoff my last transaction was supposed to be for 41¢ per gallon cash back I had 13.69 gallons of gas and they only gave me 1¢ a gallon cash back by the time my receipt processed, what a ripoff.

Was once a good app, has really fallen lately. My last straw was accept an off for .16/gallon cash back, get paid .01/gallon.

One reviewer reports the run-around in full: a receipt-free offer that paid a fifth of what was claimed, then a request for the receipt they had been told they did not need.

started out great when they added a grocery option for our area but after a couple months the grocery store must not have liked them and dropped them. I claimed a receipt free offer I was supposed to get .75 for (lame) but when it came through it was .15 (even more pathetic) when confronted they said the gas station sent the info and a discount was used and then they asked for a receipt to prove it.

Stage 6: The Bonus (7 reviews)

Seven reviews are about a welcome, promo or referral bonus that was advertised and never credited. It is a small bucket, but every one of the seven is a first impression, which makes it expensive.

advertised a $10 welcome bonus i didnt get it and there support is a BOT that cant help with nothing

this app is a scam they say they offer a 10$ promo for your first purchase of cash back but then when you're supposed to get it it just disappears

this is a bad app. my wife didn't get anything for referring me. and they come up with all kinds of excuses to not approve your claim.

It Pays, Then It Stops

The most repeated shape in the corpus is not "this never worked". It is "this worked, and then it didn't". Twenty-eight of the 219 say so in their own words, and the turning point they name most often is the first successful cash out.

the first time you use it, its fine. but after you cash out the first time. itll never count anything again.

When I first downloaded the app I did not have any problems at all with any of my transactions processing. But over the past 6 months about 3 to 4 transactions out of about 10 do not process and stay hung up and I never get paid.

The first time I used it everything went smoothly. The next four transactions not so good. I haven't changed anything at all, same card on file same way i di the first transaction, but always says need further review.

App is turning out to be trash in my opinion. I was using Upside with my company fleet card for at least 2 years with no issues. Cashed out about 300, then, all of a sudden, it can't find my purchases, all charges have to go into review, nothing is getting approved. I removed my card and re-uploaded it and still the same issue.

Upside used to be great. Cashback showed up quickly and offers actually worked. The last couple months, multiple grocery offers have sat “under review” for days or weeks, then disappeared completely with no cashback.

We are not claiming the app deliberately switches off after a payout, and nothing in a review corpus could establish that. What we can say is that 28 people independently described the same sequence, and that the sequence is specific enough that anyone trying the app can check it against their own account.

For balance, the corpus also contains people who say the money arrives. They are rating the app 2 or 3 stars for other reasons, and they are worth quoting precisely because they are in the negative set.

it's pretty good a lil bit of savings is better than none at all but it could be a bit more higher.cashouts are always good no issues at all

you do earn cash back but I wish it was more cash back then what it is and as long as you have over a $1 you can cash out at any time.

app works ok. Haven't got cash back on every transaction, but if it gives it to you you can cash it out

Is It Getting Worse?

Not in a straight line, and that is the point. Reviews carry the app version the writer had installed, so we can compare builds directly.

Jun 20261475134.7%
Jul 20261825228.6%
Aug 20261515737.7%

Eight builds and four months, and the share bounces between 25.6% and 47.6% with no direction. No release in the window fixed it and no release caused it. If you are waiting for an update, the data does not support waiting.

One more number that shapes what happens after a claim fails: 19 of the 219 name a bot, an AI assistant or the absence of a human when they describe trying to get it resolved.

Step 1: Screenshot the Offer Before You Pump

Seventeen reviewers were paid less than the rate they claimed, and their problem in every case was that the offer they saw was gone by the time they argued about it. Screenshot the claimed rate with the timestamp visible. It costs two seconds and it is the only evidence the corpus shows people wishing they had.

Step 2: Keep the Paper Receipt Even When the Offer Says You Do Not Need One

One reviewer claimed a receipt-free offer, got a fifth of the amount, and was then asked for the receipt. Fourteen more were told the app could not find a transaction that appeared on their own statement. Take the printed receipt every time and photograph it before it fades.

Step 3: Submit the Claim the Same Day

Several reviewers report claims aging out into "too old to pay out" while they waited for an automatic match. If a transaction has not credited by the end of the day, upload the receipt manually rather than assuming the card feed will catch up.

Step 4: Cash Out Small and Cash Out Early

Thirty-five reviewers lost access to a balance they had already earned, and the sums they name are the painful part: $75, $140, $212. The corpus gives one clear risk-reduction move, and it is to not let a balance build. Take the money out at the minimum rather than saving toward a bigger redemption.

Step 5: Pick the Cash Out Method Other People Got Paid With

With PayPal gone, the remaining options are a bank link or gift cards, and the reviews rate them unevenly. Multiple reviewers report the virtual Visa card being declined everywhere and one reports the redemption email never arriving. Retailer gift cards draw the fewest complaints in this corpus. That is a comparison of complaint volumes, not a guarantee.

So, Does Upside Pay?

For a lot of people, yes. Four in five ratings on Google Play are five stars, and even inside the negative set there are reviewers saying the cash out works fine.

But the negative set is unusually concentrated. Nearly a third of every substantial complaint in nearly four months is about money that was promised and did not arrive, and more than half of those are a single failure: a purchase that was made, claimed correctly, and never credited. Thirty-three of the 219 reach for the word scam. Twenty-eight describe it working before it stopped.

That is the honest shape of it. Upside is not a fake app, and treating it as one gets the risk wrong. The risk is that you drive out of your way for a rate you may not be paid, argue with a bot about a receipt, and end up holding a balance you cannot move. Claim small, cash out fast, and keep the receipt.
