Is Booking.com Legit? 111 Failed Bookings (2026)

By Unstar · Editorial Team

Booking.com holds 4.79 stars on Google Play. We read 480 substantial negative reviews and hand-checked 154 of them: 111 describe a paid booking that failed, 23 of those at the front desk, and 95.5 percent of the 111 are one star.

Booking.com holds 4.79 stars on Google Play. That number is the average of 6.3 million ratings, and it is doing a lot of work hiding what the 1-star ratings say. We read the negative ones and counted a single claim: the booking was made, the money left the account, and the stay did not happen.

very worst experience in my life.we arrive at the place we booked but when we contacted the property owner she said she didn't have any unit in the place we booked.we got scammed and transfer to other hotels.

THEY STOLE MY MONEY!!! Refund was denied after I prepaid for a reservation with the hyatt and when I arrived to check in the hotel couldn't locate my reservation!

We read the 3,000 newest Google Play reviews of Booking.com from the United States store, dated 29 June 2026 to 2 September 2026, a 66 day window. Of those, 899 are 1-3 stars and 480 are substantial, meaning at least 120 characters of text, which is roughly where a review stops being a mood and starts being a report. 111 of those 480, or 23.1%, describe a paid booking that failed. 106 of the 111 are one star, a 95.5% share that is the highest we have measured on any complaint theme, in any app, including subscriptions people could not cancel.

On Google Play the app holds 4.79 stars from 6,327,465 ratings with more than 500 million installs, and 120,403 of those ratings are one star. The iOS listing holds 4.85 from 2,131,632 ratings. Both numbers are true. So is everything below.

How We Counted

We kept only 1-3 star reviews with at least 120 characters, then filtered in two stages.

The first stage kept anything mentioning a reservation, a hotel, a property, a host, a refund, a charge or a cancellation. That returned 342 reviews, 71.3% of the substantial negatives, which is useless on its own. Almost every complaint about a travel app mentions a hotel.

The second stage required language describing an actual outcome: a booking cancelled, a property with no record, a room refused, a double charge, a refund demanded, a listing that did not exist. That returned 154 candidates, 32.1%.

Then we read all 154 by hand. 43 were dropped as off topic. Those were real complaints, but not this claim: prices rising on repeat searches, the Genius discount being worse than the public rate, the app blocking screenshots, missing map features, generic "scam" reviews with no incident attached. 111 survived.

The filter is deliberately conservative and it is anchored in English, so it undercounts. While checking we found at least two more genuine cases sitting in the wider 342 that the second stage had missed, one of them written in Spanish. Treat 111 as a floor, not a total.

The 111 sort into five failure modes. A review often describes more than one, so each is filed under the thing it leads with.

Turned Away At The Door

Twenty-three reviewers describe the worst version of this: they travelled, they arrived, and the property would not let them in. This is the group where the platform's core promise, that a confirmed booking is a confirmed booking, fails at the exact moment it matters.

Very disappointing experience. I booked a Marriott in Waco through the Booking app, but when I arrived, the hotel had no record of my reservation. Thankfully, the Marriott staff were great and helped me.

this app stole my money , i booked an appartement and when i got to it i found it already occupied.. and i did pay already in the app it was 93$ . and when i demanded my refund no answer.. nothing.

The reasons given vary and several are worth separating, because they are not all the same failure. Some arrive to find the room already occupied. Some find the address empty. Some are told the property never received the money.

Systemic failure between this platform and the property host. I arrived at the property to find that my payment had not been transferred to the landlord. Because the host did not receive the money from the platform, they refused to let me check in. I was completely stranded with nowhere to stay.

I been using this app for a few years no issues until now. they charged me for 2 rooms and the hotel said they had no rooms so they canceled the reservation. I then paid the property to check in the next day and booking still charged me so now I've paid double for my rooms and trying to get booking to understand they need to refund me is so hard to do.

Four of the 111 say they were left with nowhere to stay that night. That is a small number and we are not going to inflate it. It is also the number that decides whether this theme is an inconvenience or something else.

Can You Say CLASS ACTION LAWSUIT? They took my money, didn't place the reservation, I had to sleep in my car in the heat with my 8 months pregnant wife. And when I asked for a refund I was told no.

Terrible experience, unsafe for travelers. Showed up to a confirmed booking, called the owner 25 times, and waited outside for 2 hours with no response. The app then emailed me saying it was overbooked.

The Booking That Was Never Made

Seventeen reviewers describe a cleaner and stranger failure: the payment went through and the reservation did not. In several of these the app itself said so.

When making booking the app brought up an alert saying that while the payment had succeeded the booking had failed and that a refund would be provided in 24h.

hello, money for booking was charged, but no booking was created (no pin). There are only self help articals under customer support, but there is no instruction on what to do in my case. there is no chat, no email to contact, and no phone number.

I recently had a business trip and although I paid and booked through the app they never booked the hotel. Customer service tries to lie to your face about their systems and policies or blame it all on the hotel.

This group matters out of proportion to its size, because the money and the booking are handled by the same company in the same transaction. Whatever else is disputed in the other four modes, nobody here is blaming a hotel.

Cancelled After The Money Was Taken

Sixteen reviewers had a confirmed booking cancelled after paying. The recurring detail is not the cancellation. It is the notice.

Cancelled my accommodation at 6pm with no explanation and no alternative. If we hadn't checked our emails we wouldn't have known.

i made a booking for my girlfriends birthday and last minute (2 weeks after the reservation) they cancelled my reservations with no notice. i only figured it out because i checked my bank statments and noticed the refund.

Horrible, booked a condo with them. Drove 8 hours to get there, weren't able to access our condo and they just canceled our reservation and told us "just book another one, we'll send your money back in a couple weeks." Contacted customer service,

A pattern several reviewers name independently: the host asks the guest to cancel, rather than cancelling themselves. Guests who understand what that means describe refusing, because a guest-initiated cancellation can carry the guest's own penalty.

rented an apt for a month. paid for it immediately. been looking for months finally found this. owner msg me asks me to cancel. Spent so much time on this now have to start over. call booking and get ai support.

What Was Offered Instead Of A Refund

This is the part we have not seen published anywhere, and it is the reason the theme is worth counting rather than describing. Nine of the 111 name both what they paid and what they were offered. Reviewers who write a number are self selecting and this is a small sample, so read it as a set of reported cases, not an average.

What the reviewer says they paidWhat they say they were offered
About 440 euros for four nights50 euros in travel credit
Roughly 800 dollarsA 60 dollar refund
Close to 300 dollars26 dollars back
2,000 euros82 euros
Full booking price10% of it
A cancelled room, 45 pounds promised8 pounds in credit
A stay with photos that did not matchA 16 dollar credit
Three nights, wrong room categoryA fraction, parking not refunded
A partial refund agreed in AprilStill unpaid in July

Booking listed an accommodation for which I paid around €110 per night for four nights. I arrived to dirty, blood-stained bedding, a dirty toilet and no usable advertised WiFi. I sent photos and other evidence. The support agent was polite, but the final outcome was only €50 in Booking travel credit, not a refund. A platform that earns guests’ trust should vet listings better and provide a real solution when basic standards are not met.

you can find good deals but good luck on getting a refund from these people. booking got us a place with cockroaches and the place put us in a smoker side without telling us and knowing we had a 10 month old. I went through all the bs and I got a whole $26 back out of close to $300.

Booking.NO! Customer Service is shockingly bad. The accommodation I booked had lied in their description and I rejected it without staying a night. Property owner stopped replying to messages when I asked for a refund. Booking say reach out 24/7 to Customer Service but when you reach out asking for a full refund, they offer only 10% of the booking price! When I rejected this they stopped replying as well! Terrible company, take your money but won't give it back! AI reply.. App uninstalled!

good for what it does but terrible customer service. had our room cancel and was told we could get 45 pounds off a stay if we booked for the same night and provided invoice. now i get 8 pound in credit after staying somewhere i wouldnt have paid that for and was hoping for the inconvenience money back.

The consistent shape here is not that the amount is small. It is that the remedy arrives as credit on the platform rather than money back to the card. A guest who has just decided never to use the platform again has been compensated in a currency that only works on the platform.

How Long People Say They Waited

Nineteen of the 111 put a number on the wait. Booking's own quoted window appears repeatedly in the reviews as 7 to 12 days.

BEWARE (their reply below, tried & failed, same bot responses) refunds do not arrive in the promised 14 days, which is also the legal window in EU. Promises are made and broken, emails are replied by bots.

After 4 months still didn't get refund for my canceled reservation. I'm truly disappointed. I was promised from customer support, and after 4 months they still did nothing.

Worst customer service ever. Still waiting for my refund after more than 5 months and getting kicked out of queues and chats regularly.

I paid the money to book the property that wasn't available. I was left stranded in a foreign country without accommodation with no help at all. Abysmal customer service ,also , it took me 6 months to get my money back .

Nine People Stopped Asking And Went To Their Bank

Nine of the 111 say they went around the platform entirely, to a chargeback, a card dispute, a PayPal claim or their bank. That is 8.1%, and it is the single most useful signal in the set, because a chargeback is a thing people do only after they have concluded that asking will not work.

Got a rental listed as having AC with no AC during a heatwave. Booking resisted a full refund because the property offered me a dusty electric fan that doesn't actually cool the air. I got my refund via CC chargeback; no thanks to Booking.

my booking was cancelled due to a technical error, 3 days later and I'm still fighting to be allowed a refund, and so far the customer support for booking has been absolutely abysmal.

They kept my money AND my booking info from me. I lost my phone along with booking info. Something like that should have a confirmation email/other ways to access your booking info. When there wasn't, I contacted customer service on numerous accounts in which they did not respond to at all in 2 weeks! So I had to cancel & tell the bank to get my money back.

One reviewer describes the dispute being defeated with the booking confirmation itself.

I had a terrible experience with their flight booking service. My flight was cancelled, but my refund was delayed for over 90 days. When I escalated the issue through a PayPal dispute to get my money back, the company submitted my original booking confirmation as

Separately, 26 of the 111, or 23.4%, describe the support channel as a bot, an AI, or something with no human behind it. That is roughly one in four, and it is what connects the five failure modes: the thing people are angriest about is usually not the failure, it is that the failure had nowhere to go.

Their support is pathetic. I was booking a hotel room. Amount got deducted i don't have proof of that except the transaction id. I lost the amount and the hotel room was also not booked and there is no option to reach out to support even.

this app has become a scamming app. no efficient support, they will just reply to each bad review saying we should reach them but there's no way for us to reach them. Only AI which cant solve our problems.

This Is Not A Bad Release

It would be tidier if this were a regression. It is not.

The 111 reviews carry 27 distinct app version labels across 92 labelled reviews, with 19 unlabelled. No single build accounts for more than nine of them. Spread across the window by month, the share is flat: 20.0% of substantial negatives in June, 22.9% in July, 23.0% in August.

A regression shows up in one build and disappears in the next. This is level across eleven weeks and more than two dozen builds, which is what a policy looks like rather than a bug.

The Same Pattern In Twenty-Two Other Stores

We then pulled reviews from 45 Google Play storefronts outside the United States and kept only what we had not already seen: 5,487 new reviews, 795 substantial negatives, of which 706 are from 2026.

Matching those against booking-failure keywords in each language returns 192 reviews, 27.2%, close to the 23.1% we hand verified in the United States. Two caveats. This is a keyword match rather than a hand read, so 27.2% is a ceiling. And the international window reaches back further, so it is a longer and thinner record than the American one.

The striking part is the distribution. All 192 come from non-English storefronts, spread across 22 of them, led by Russian (30), Italian (22), French (19), Spanish (17), Turkish (16), German (15) and Brazilian Portuguese (12). The same five failure modes appear in every one of them.

Arrived, and the reservation was gone:

The address that did not exist, and the overbooking discovered on the road:

The remedy ladder repeats too, in euros:

And so does the wait, along with the chargeback:

One Arabic reviewer arrives at the practical conclusion the rest of this data supports, which is to stop prepaying:

A note on method, because it matters. A storefront is not a country and the language a review is written in is not the reviewer's nationality. We assigned every language label above by reading the text, not by trusting the store bucket. Several reviews in the Turkish and Russian storefronts are written in English or Polish and carry no label here.

What This Does Not Show

We are counting complaints, not outcomes, and the limits are worth stating plainly.

These 111 reviews are not a rate. We do not know how many bookings Booking.com processed in this window, and it is certainly an enormous number against which 111 is nothing. What the count measures is the share of people who were already unhappy enough to write, which is a different and narrower thing.

Every account here is one side of a dispute. We have the guest's version, never the property's and never the platform's. Where a reviewer says a refund was refused, we know only that they say so.

The dollar figures are reported, not verified. Nobody attached a receipt.

And the 43 we dropped are a reminder that most negative reviews of this app are about something else entirely: pricing, the Genius programme, search filters, the interface. The 23.1% is the share of a specific claim, not a verdict on the app.

If You Prepay Anyway

Nothing here is advice about whether to use the app. It is a list of what the 111 reviewers who got burned say they wish they had done, which is a narrower and more honest thing to offer.

Several say the failure was survivable because they still had a card dispute available. Nine used one. If you prepay, prepay with an instrument that gives you a chargeback route, and keep the confirmation, the price and the property's messages where you can export them. One reviewer above lost their evidence with their phone and could not prove the booking existed.

Several say the property asked them to cancel. If that happens, the reviewers who understood the mechanics describe refusing and asking the platform to cancel instead, because who presses the button can decide who pays the penalty.

Several, including the Arabic reviewer above, arrived at the same rule after being burned: where the property offers pay on arrival, take it, and reserve prepayment for stays where you have no other option.

And check the reservation directly with the property a few days out. In this set, the people who found out at the front desk are the ones who ended up sleeping in a car.

Where To See The Reviews

You can read the current negative reviews for yourself. We keep a running breakdown of the Booking.com Android app and the iOS listing, including the trust check on whether Booking.com is legit and a list of alternatives to Booking.com drawn from the same review data.

If a booking of yours has already failed, the two things the reviewers in this set consistently wish they had done sooner are opening a card dispute inside their bank's time limit, and putting the complaint in writing somewhere with a timestamp.

Methodology: All apps and review counts referenced are pulled live from App Store and Google Play APIs. Rankings update weekly. Specific reviews are direct user quotes (1-3 stars) with names masked. If you spot an error, email us.
