Roblox Age Check: 424 Reviews, 86 Lost Chat (2026)

A nine year old girl in her mother's account looked into a phone camera so that Roblox could work out how old she was. Roblox decided she was 21 or older. Her mother spent weeks trying to get that reversed, offered to send proof of the child's real age, and was refused.

That is one review out of 424 we verified in a single month of Roblox complaints, and it is the shape of the whole problem in one sentence. Roblox now asks for a face before it will let most people type, and the thing doing the guessing is not always right.

Roblox holds 4.21 stars from 52,406,396 Google Play ratings. 7,617,640 of those are one star, and 10,649,469 of them, 20.3% of everything the store has counted, are 1 to 3 stars. On the App Store the same platform holds 4.51 from 20,178,344 ratings, a gap of 0.30 stars between the two versions of the same product.

Quick Answer: What Are Reviewers Saying About Roblox Age Verification?

That it decides the wrong age, and that the wrong age is hard to undo. We pulled the 60,000 most recent US Google Play reviews on 21 September 2026, a continuous run from 22 August covering 31 days with no gap, filtered to 4,172 substantial 1-3 star complaints, and hand-verified 424 that discuss the age check. That is 10.2% of every real complaint in the window, roughly one substantial Roblox complaint in ten, every week, for as long as our window runs. 86 of the 424 say the check cost them the ability to talk to somebody specific. 35 describe being asked for a government ID. 25 give both their own age and the band the scan assigned them, and those two numbers disagree in every one: 19 were aged down, 6 were aged up, and the six aged up include two nine year olds put into adult bands. 11 say the check is trivially bypassed, including one who says children use a parent's face.

How We Read These Reviews

We pulled the 60,000 most recent US Google Play reviews for Roblox on 21 September 2026, along with the live store metadata. Those reviews run from 22 August to 21 September 2026, 31 days, with reviews on every single day and no gap anywhere in the range. That volume is not a flex, it is a requirement: Roblox receives so many reviews that 60,000 of them only buys you a month.

13,775 were 1 to 3 stars, and 4,172 of those were substantial, meaning 120 characters or more of actual writing. 62.6% of the substantial negatives were one star.

Searching those for the age check returns 426. We read the context of every one of them, and two came out. One is about facial animation on avatars, which has nothing to do with the check. The other says "page verification", and the letters a-g-e space v-e-r-i-f sit inside the word "page", which is the kind of thing a word boundary does not catch and a human reading the line does. That leaves 424 verified reviews, 10.2% of every substantial complaint in the window.

Here is a number that runs the other way, and we are leading with it rather than burying it: 60.4% of these 424 are one star, against 62.6% for the corpus as a whole. People complaining about the age check are slightly less likely to give one star than people complaining about everything else. That is because a large share of them open by saying they love the game. This is not a review bomb. It is a complaint from inside the user base.

This Is Not a Bad Update. It Is a Standing Condition.

Most of the complaint clusters we write about have a spike in them somewhere: a build, a week, a rollout. This one does not.

Four complete weeks, a slow drift downward, nothing that looks like an event. The partial weeks at either end of the window sit at 14.1% and 9.5%, which does not change the picture.

Builds say the same thing. Every Roblox version in the corpus with at least 100 substantial negative reviews:

From 7.1% to 13.3%, with no build standing out. There is nothing here to roll back and nothing to wait out. One in ten complaints about Roblox is about the age check every single week, and has been for as long as our window runs.

25 Reviewers Gave Us Both Numbers

The central claim in this corpus is that the scan gets the age wrong. That claim is easy to make and hard to check, so we only counted the reviews that give us enough to check it: the reviewer states their own age, or a named family member's, and states the band the check assigned. 25 reviews do both, and the two numbers disagree in all 25.

19 of the 25 were aged down. The scan decided they were younger than they said they were, which in this system means losing chat and losing access to games.

The stated ages in the aged down group are 10, 11, 12, 13, 13, 13, 14, 15, 15, 16, 16, 17, 18, 19, 22, 23, 27 and 27, plus one reviewer who gave their own band as 18 to 21. The bands the check handed back include 8, 9, 10, 13 and 16 as single numbers, and 9 to 12, 9 to 13, 10 to 15 and 13 to 15 as ranges. Two more were simply dropped into Roblox Kids and into Roblox Select alongside seven year olds.

Six were aged up, and this is the half that matters for what the feature exists to do.

Parents please listen!! My 9 year old used the facial recognition to verify her age and was placed as 21+. I contacted Roblox over the course of WEEKS to have her account reset back to a minors profile, even offering to show proof of her age. They REFUSED.

The game itself is fine. The problem is age verification. Every time my 9 year old child usses age verification he gets 16 to 17 or 18 to 21.

Two of those six are nine year olds. One was placed at 21 and over. One is reported by a parent who says the same child gets a different answer on different attempts, sometimes 16 to 17, sometimes 18 to 21, which is a detail worth pausing on: the same face, the same week, two different answers.

That is not the only reviewer to find the scan inconsistent on one face.

Two accounts, one person, two bands nine years apart.

We are not going to turn 25 reviews into a measurement of Roblox's error rate, because people who get the right answer do not write reviews about it. What 25 paired reports do establish is that the errors are large, that they go both ways, and that the direction is not what you would assume. Most of the visible damage is teenagers and adults pushed down into children's chat. Most of the danger is in the six that went the other way.

86 Reviews Are About One Specific Person They Cannot Talk To

The consequence people actually write about is not abstract. 86 of the 424, 20.3% of the cluster, describe losing contact with somebody named: a brother, a sister, a cousin, a best friend of four years, a friend in another country. We read all 86 and did not remove any of them.

The mechanism is simple once you see it. Chat is scoped to your band, so two people who were friends before the check can end up unable to type at each other, and neither of them did anything. A reviewer whose friend is in Roblox Kids cannot reach them from the standard app. 31 of the 424 mention the split into Roblox, Roblox Select and Roblox Kids by name.

The Only Documented Fix Needs An ID

If the band is wrong, reviewers describe exactly one path out, and it is the one a child cannot take. 35 of the 424 mention a government ID, a passport or a driver's licence.

Roblox is good but it keeps on saying that I am older than I am and I want to correct it so that I can play with my friends but it wants my government ID.

Read those in order and the trap assembles itself. The check decides a teenager is younger than they are. The teenager wants it corrected. The correction requires a photo ID. Teenagers frequently do not have one. The reviewer who was placed in 13 to 15 at the age of 16 to 18 says plainly that they were asked for an ID and do not have one.

For the people who do have documents, the document path has its own failure rate.

I am extremely frustrated with your age verification system. I have spent an ENTIRE WEEK trying to correct my birthdate by uploading my passport. Your system repeatedly claims it cannot read the document, even though the photo is perfectly clear and legible.

Eight reviewers describe the check failing to complete at all, as opposed to completing with a wrong answer: the camera does not open, the scan returns an error, or the app says it cannot estimate an age. We want to be careful with this number, because a broad search for failure words returns 17 and nine of those are using "it doesn't work" to mean "it does not achieve its purpose", which is a different complaint. Eight describe a mechanical failure.

11 Reviewers Say It Is Trivial to Beat

A safety check is judged by both of its error directions, and reviewers are blunt about the second one. 11 of the 424 describe the check being bypassed, and they are specific about how.

We cannot verify any of these claims, and we are not presenting them as verified. What we can say is that eleven separate people, unprompted, in the same month, describe the same three workarounds, and that one reviewer's summary of the physics is hard to improve on: it is like putting a piece of cardboard in front of a tsunami.

One reviewer connects the two error directions into the argument that actually matters:

Roblox is getting worse and is putting children in risk. It uses AI face scan to guess your age and put you into an age group that YOU cannot change if there is an misunderstanding. The ai isn't as accurate as you think, like the simplest thing such as lighting can change your age group.

Lighting changing the band is a claim from one reviewer, not a finding of ours. The rest of that paragraph is the same structural point the paired numbers make: a check that is wrong in both directions gives adults false confidence about who they are talking to.

What the Privacy Objection Actually Is

12 reviewers object to the face scan itself rather than to its result. Our first pattern returned 21, and five of those losses came from a single word: Roblox reviewers use "creepy" constantly, but they use it about the new realistic avatars, not about the camera. That is a trap worth naming, because on most apps "creepy" near a face scan would be a safe signal and here it is not.

We swept 32 more storefront and language buckets. They returned 33,600 reviews we had not seen and 2,227 substantial negatives, in which a conservative per language search finds 162 age check complaints across 19 storefronts. Korea leads at 24, then Romania at 17, Italy and Greece at 16, Poland at 15.

The Japanese reviewer reports being set both above and below a true age of 20 on different attempts, which is the same instability two US reviewers describe. The Indonesian reviewer says they tried ten times and were read as nine years old against a 2003 birth year.

The German review is the shortest and the sharpest: a child under ten, on an account a parent already administers, is asked to prove their age with a photo. The Russian reviewer describes the bypass from the other side, children asking a parent to pass the check so they can get into an adult game.

Step 1: Find Out Which Band You Are Actually In Before Assuming a Bug

A large share of this corpus is people who discovered the band only when something stopped working: a game would not open, a friend could not be messaged, the chat box went quiet. Check the band on the account first. The difference matters, because being in the wrong band and being in a band you did not expect have completely different fixes, and 31 reviewers here found out they were in Roblox Kids or Roblox Select only after they lost something.

Step 2: Treat the Scan as One Attempt, Not a Draft

Reviewers repeatedly describe the result sticking. One says it never offers a second chance. One spent an hour trying to get the right answer and was refused a retry. One asks Roblox to "add a again option if they made a mistake", which tells you there was not one. Whatever the official policy is, the people in this corpus did not experience the scan as something they could casually redo, so treat the attempt as the one that counts: good light, plain background, nothing on your face, and do it when you are not in a hurry.

Step 3: If the Band Is Wrong, Expect the ID Path and Check You Can Use It

35 reviewers here were routed to a document upload. Before starting that, work out whether the person in question actually has an acceptable document, because a teenager often does not, and one reviewer in this corpus was pushed toward a driver's licence at an age where you would not have one. If you do have a document, budget for it not working first time: one reviewer spent a week on a passport that the system kept saying it could not read, and another was told "Sorry couldn't verify your age" on a clear image.

Step 4: For a Child, the Direction of the Error Decides the Urgency

This is the one place where we would tell a parent to act immediately rather than wait. An error that puts a child in a younger band is an inconvenience. An error that puts a child in an older band puts them in adult chat, and in this corpus two nine year olds landed in the 18 and over and 21 and over bands. If you administer a child's account, check which band the scan assigned, and treat an older-than-real band as something to fix now rather than at the weekend. One parent in this corpus reports being refused a reset even after offering proof of the child's age, so start that conversation early.

Step 5: If You Cannot Reach One Specific Friend, the Problem May Not Be Yours

86 reviews here are about a person, not a feature, and in a good number of them the account that has the problem belongs to the other person. If one friend is unreachable while everyone else is fine, the likely cause is that their band does not overlap yours, or that they have not done the check at all. Several reviewers describe friends who simply refused to scan their face and lost chat as a result. Nothing you do on your own account will fix that case.

Step 6: Decide Whether You Are Willing to Do It At All, In Advance

12 reviewers here object to the scan itself, and one describes what happens next: they declined the check, and the account was later locked and the check demanded anyway. That may or may not generalise, but it is worth knowing the shape of the decision before you make it. Declining is not always a stable state, and the features you lose by declining are the ones most people use Roblox for.
