Toyota App Remote Start Not Working? 105 Reviews (2026)

By Unstar · Editorial Team

The Toyota app rates 4.73 on Google Play. We read 903 substantial negative reviews: 105 describe a remote command that failed, and Digital Key complaints grew roughly tenfold from January to August 2026.

The Toyota app holds 4.73 stars on Google Play. That number is doing a lot of work, because the people who write the negative reviews are not complaining about the app in general. They are complaining about the two or three things they bought it for.

I use this app solely for the remote start. that feature is unreliable. Even when I follow the rules of closed and locked doors, enough gas, empty seats, good signal. IT DOES NOT WORK !!! THE APP IS USELESS..

I have never been able to use the remote start feature. I always get a failure message, even though the truck is locked and I have the keys with me.

We read the 3,000 newest Google Play reviews of the Toyota app from the United States store, dated 14 January to 1 September 2026. Of those, 1,737 are 1-3 stars and 903 are substantial (at least 120 characters). 105 of the 903, or 11.6%, describe a remote command that did not work. 77 of those 105 are one star.

On Google Play the app holds 4.73 stars from 175,873 ratings with more than 5 million installs, running version 3.5.0 released 4 August 2026. On the App Store the same app holds 4.83 from 838,276 ratings. The listing declares no in-app purchases and no ads, which is worth noting up front, because the money in this story is billed by Toyota rather than by the store.

Quick Answer: What Actually Fails

Not the whole app. A specific set of commands.

The categories overlap, because one review often reports two. What is consistent across all of them is the word "sometimes". Very few of these reviewers say the feature never worked. Most say it works often enough that they keep trying it and rely on it, and then fails on the morning they need it.

Fails to work 90% of the time. I live in the suburbs of a major US city with excellent cell coverage.

it takes 20 tries to remote start the car with this app if it will ever work.

App doesn't work well, for a paid app this should work everytime. It is highly unreliable for remote start.

The One Thing That Is Clearly Getting Worse

Most of what we measured is chronic rather than new. Remote start failures appear in every build in the window. One cluster does not behave that way.

Digital Key complaints are rising sharply. We counted every substantial negative review that mentions the Digital Key, then took that as a share of all substantial negatives for the same app version. The shape is not subtle.

App versionDigital Key reviewsAll substantial negativesShare

3.2.031212.5%
3.3.06837.2%
3.4.0161858.6%
3.5.094918.4%

The monthly view says the same thing without depending on version tags at all: 1.5% in January, 1.6% in February, 4.3% in March, 1.7% in April, 9.2% in May, 5.9% in June, 7.5% in July, and 15.5% in August. From January to August the Digital Key share of complaints grew roughly tenfold.

Two honest caveats. The 3.5.0 sample is 49 substantial negatives, which is small, so the 18.4% has real uncertainty around it. And a rising share can mean the feature is getting worse or that more owners are switching it on. What the share cannot be is flat, and it is not.

The whole Digital Key cluster is 45 reviews, 34 of them one star. Inside it, the failure descriptions repeat with unusual precision.

Eleven say the key deletes itself or has to be downloaded again, often after a phone restart or an app update.

Every time i restart my phone the digital key is gone but the phone still work to start the car update did something funny

Digital key no longer working. Dropped off and will not download. When this is corrected it will be back up to five stars.

Version 3.5.0 digital key deletes itself randomly. Setting up a vehicle digital key requires disabling Developer Options, and renames the phone Bluetooth connection to "Passive" when the phone connects to the vehicle.

Ten say the re-download itself fails, hanging partway through, which turns the fix into the problem.

Digital key doesn't work since last update. Every time I open the app I have to re-download the digital key and it freezes a third of the way.

After the last update, the digital key wanted to update and it got stuck. After deleting all data, it updated, and you needed to connect to the digital key again.

When it works its great, but every once in a while. The digital key will be deactivated for no reason. Then you go click to download and it just loads and wont download it. Then there is very long process to delete all the keys, the app, reset the car etc.

Eight describe being locked out of, or stuck in, the car, which is the reason this cluster matters more than its size suggests.

Toyota software is terrible. Their digital key will leave you stranded.

The digital key has proven unreliable, repeatedly preventing vehicle locking despite the key being out of range, and requiring constant re-downloads.

Digital key is worst from other cars. It doesn't work where I am stuck in my car without key being recognized. I have to carry key fob.

Five describe a shared key failing, where a second driver in the household cannot accept the invitation.

Like others say, app immediately crashes when trying to accept digital key from my wife. I've cleared the cache, deleted and reinstalled the all, resent the digital key request, but every time I click the link to accept it, the app opens, briefly shows the accept or decline button, then immediately crashes. Can't accept the key.

Digital key invitations do not work properly. Invitation link opens Toyota app but no prompts to add key or anything. Did all the troubleshooting, cleared cache, uninstalled and reinstalled app, restarted phone but no difference.

How is a family supposed to use this? If my wife is driving in the morning to take the kids to school, and then I have to drive it in the afternoon for sports, is she supposed to share it with me every time?

And a small but very specific pair of side effects, reported independently by four and two reviewers respectively: the Digital Key renames the phone's Bluetooth identity, and it refuses to set up while Android Developer Options are enabled.

horrible. the digital key only works like 90 percent of the time, which means you're stuck in a car that won't start the other 10 percent of the time unless you bring your key, which defeats the point of the digital key.

Can't use digital key with developer options turned on. How dumb.

You Are Paying For The Part That Fails

This is a policy complaint rather than a bug, and we are labelling it as one, but it changes how the bug reads.

158 of the 903 substantial negatives mention a subscription, a trial that ended, or a price. Among the 105 verified failures, 23 explicitly say they pay for the feature that failed. The prices reviewers name most often are $15 a month (20 reviews), $8 a month (6) and $25 a month (4), and several describe an $8 remote-start option being folded into a larger bundle. We did not verify these against Toyota's published pricing, so read them as what owners believe they are paying.

When remote starting works, it is great. All too frequently, it does not work. It is not cool that we're paying $15/month for an app that frequently does not do what it is supposed to do.

I pay the subscription for remote start and yet sometimes it won't work. I have an Internet connection.

App freezes up and won't load. Come on, Toyota, fix your app so the remote function that I pay for work!!

The app works 20% of the time and the fact they expect you to pay for this with other services no one uses because of CarPlay and Android Auto is ridiculous.

One consequence shows up repeatedly and is easy to miss: because the feature is a paid service with a trial, some share of "it stopped working" is not a fault at all. It is an expired trial. That is the first thing worth checking, and it is why it is step one below.

Step 1: Confirm The Feature Is Still Paid For

Several reviews in the set describe a feature that "stopped working" on a date that turns out to be the end of a trial period. Open the app's subscription or services screen and check whether Remote Connect (remote start, lock and unlock) and the Digital Key are still active on your vehicle. If the trial has lapsed, no amount of troubleshooting will bring the buttons back.

My trial recently ended. I just want the remote start for the climate but that function stopped working back in February when it was the coldest.

Step 2: Rule Out The Vehicle's Own Preconditions

Remote start is refused by the car, not the app, when its conditions are not met. Reviewers who eventually understood their failure name the same list: doors closed and locked, hood closed, no keys left inside, and enough charge or fuel. One reviewer reports that a plug-in hybrid refuses to remote start below 20% battery. Another reports the vehicle shutting off as soon as a door is opened, which is designed behaviour rather than a fault. Work through that list before you assume the app is broken, and note that the app frequently does not tell you which condition failed.

Worthless. if the battery on a Prius prime is less than 20%, it won't let you remote start the car. Why it can't just start the gas engine at that point I have no idea.

Step 3: Delete The Digital Key And Set It Up Again From Scratch

This is the workaround the Digital Key reviewers converge on, and the one several say works, at least until the next time. Remove the key from the app, clear the app's cache and data, then download the key again. Reviewers describe the download failing partway on the first attempt and succeeding after the cache is cleared. Expect to repeat it: multiple reviewers say the cycle returns after a phone restart or an app update, which is a workaround rather than a fix.

Step 4: Turn Off Developer Options Before Setting Up A Key

Two reviewers report the same specific blocker: the Digital Key will not complete setup on Android while Developer Options is enabled. If you have ever turned that on, for USB debugging or anything else, turn it off before you try the setup again. Separately, expect the setup to rename your phone's Bluetooth device name, which surprises people and is worth knowing before it happens rather than after.

Annoying "ready to connect" or "Digital key is open" notifications - impossible to stop without blocking all notifications l. The digital key renames your phone to "PASSIVE" without reason, so not using.

Step 5: Keep The Fob, And Check Whether It Already Does This

The single most useful thing in the whole review set comes from a reviewer who discovered that the physical key fob had remote start all along, using the lock button, and that the app subscription had never been necessary for it. This will not be true of every trim, but it costs nothing to check.

I was told to download the app if I wanted remote start because my car's fob didn't have remote start. Well I just learned it actually does!

More broadly: six reviewers in this set report being stranded, all of them people who had stopped carrying the fob because they trusted the Digital Key. Until the re-download loop stops, the fob is the fix.

The French Store Remembers An Update The American Data Cannot See

We then swept 40 more Google Play store listings and kept only reviews we had not already seen. That returned 530 additional reviews and 103 substantial negatives, and they are not evenly spread: 63 of the 103 come from the French-language listing, where the reviewers are largely writing about Canadian winters.

That slice covers 6 December 2025 to 3 August 2026, and it starts about five weeks earlier than our American window. That gap turns out to matter, because 44 of those 63 were written in December 2025 and January 2026, and 13 of them blame a specific recent update.

What they describe is concrete and mostly absent from the American set. Nine name a defrost or defogger control that the update removed from the remote start screen. Five say the app no longer confirms whether the car actually started. Eight name the temperature they were standing in.

The American corpus is not blind to this. Sixteen American reviews mention defrost or defogging, and three blame a December update by name. But the cluster is far denser in the French listing, for a reason that has nothing to do with the app: our American sample simply begins in mid-January, after the peak of it.

Two things to be careful about. A store listing is not a country, so we describe these as French-language reviews rather than assigning them to a nation, and six of the 63 are written in English and carry no language label here. And the French window is longer and thinner than the American one, so it is better evidence about what happened in December than about what is happening now.

Two more from the same sweep, outside French, showing the core failure is not language-specific.

What We Could Not Verify

We are reading reviews, not telemetry, so some things are out of reach and worth stating plainly.

We cannot tell how often remote start actually fails, only how often people write about it failing. We cannot separate app faults from cellular coverage, and several reviewers volunteer that they live where signal is weak. We cannot confirm any price, trial length or feature bundle against Toyota's own terms, so every dollar figure here is what an owner reported. And we cannot tell whether the rising Digital Key share reflects a worsening feature or a growing number of people using it. What we can say is that 105 owners in eight months described a paid remote command that did not run, and that one cluster inside that set is growing while the others hold steady.
