Spark Driver Scanner Goes Black: 131 Reviews (2026)
Spark Driver holds 4.07 stars from 179,612 Google Play ratings. We read 4,615 substantial negative reviews from a continuous 553 day run and hand-verified 131 about the item scanner failing on shopping orders. After seven months under 1.1%, it took 14.7% of all complaints in May 2026, builds 4.40.0 and 4.40.1 carry about a fifth of their own complaints on it, and a July fix was followed by a new freeze with a technical issue prompt.
A Spark driver walks into Walmart with a 40 item order on the clock, taps the barcode button on the first product, and the camera opens. Second product, the camera opens. Third product, the screen goes black. The only way to get it back is to restart the phone, which takes several minutes, or to type every UPC by hand from the shelf label.
That sequence, written down by dozens of different drivers in May and June 2026, is the single most specific failure in a year and a half of Spark Driver complaints. It also has a shape we can measure: a start date, a peak, a fall, and a different problem that took its place.
Spark Driver holds 4.07 stars from 179,612 Google Play ratings. 45,839 of those, 25.5% of everything the store has counted, are 1 to 3 stars. On the App Store the same app holds 4.69 from 301,932 ratings, a gap of 0.62 stars between the two versions of the same product. The corpus below is Android only, and that gap is worth keeping in mind for reasons we will come to.
Quick Answer: Why Does the Spark Driver Scanner Go Black?
Because of a spring build, on Android. We pulled the 12,000 most recent US Google Play reviews on 23 September 2026, a continuous run from 20 March 2025 covering 553 days with no gap, filtered to 4,615 substantial 1-3 star complaints, and hand-verified 131 about the item scanner failing during shopping orders. In the seven months before May 2026 the scanner never took more than 1.1% of complaints in any month. In May it took 14.7%, and in the week of 4 May, 20.8%. Builds 4.40.0 and 4.40.1 carry 19.3% and 20.7% of their own complaints on this one subject. 36 of the 38 black screen reports fall in May and June, and a four star review from 14 July says it was fixed. What arrived after that is a different failure: the app freezes after a scan and shows a "technical issue" prompt, and all eight reports of that prompt are dated July or later.
How We Read These Reviews
We pulled the 12,000 most recent US Google Play reviews for Spark Driver on 23 September 2026, along with the live store metadata. Those reviews run from 20 March 2025 to 23 September 2026, 553 days, with at least one review on every single day and no gap anywhere in the range. 8,170 of them were 1 to 3 stars, and 4,615 of those were substantial, meaning 120 characters or more of actual writing. 63.1% of the substantial negatives were one star.
The obvious search overcounts badly, and it is worth showing why. Searching the substantial negatives for the word "scan" from April 2026 onward returns 207 reviews. A large share of them are about scanning something other than a grocery item: the back of the driver's own licence during onboarding, a customer's ID on an alcohol or pharmacy order, package labels at pickup, the exit pass at the door, and in several cases the facial scan Spark uses for identity checks. Others use "scan" while complaining about something else entirely, such as a shopping list that reshuffles itself after every scan.
We read all 207, plus every scanner, camera or barcode mention from October 2025 to March 2026, and kept only reviews describing the in-store item scanner failing: a black, blank or white camera screen, a camera that will not open, a scanner that freezes or errors on a product barcode. That leaves 131 verified reviews, 2.8% of every substantial complaint in 553 days, and almost all of them in a window of a few weeks.
Here is the number that runs the other way, and it is the one that tells you who wrote these: only 52 of the 131, 39.7%, are one star, against 63.1% for the corpus as a whole. 52 are three stars. These are not people rage quitting. They are people who work in this app for hours a day and are describing a broken tool to the company that issues it.
some of the updates are good, some, not so much! My biggest complaint about this app right now is that I could be scanning products fine and when Im going to another product to scan, the scan screen turns black. Now you have to close out the app and re-enter. NOT impossible to get around, just a bite in the rear. thats all! Thanks
Seven Quiet Months, Then One Bad Spring
Here is the whole shape of it, by month, as a share of all substantial complaints Spark received in that month.
| Month | Scanner complaints | All substantial complaints | Share |
|---|---|---|---|
| October 2025 | 2 | 186 | 1.1% |
| November 2025 to March 2026 | 1 | 894 | 0.1% |
| April 2026 | 2 | 472 | 0.4% |
| May 2026 | 69 | 469 | 14.7% |
| June 2026 | 28 | 326 | 8.6% |
| July 2026 | 6 | 412 | 1.5% |
| August 2026 | 11 | 382 | 2.9% |
| September 2026 | 12 | 292 | 4.1% |
Week by week it is sharper. The week of 4 May is 20.8% (11 of 53). The week of 11 May dips to 6.4%. The week of 18 May, the busiest review week of the month, is 15.5% (34 of 220). The weeks of 25 May and 1 June are 20.7% and 20.0%. Then 12.5% in the week of 8 June, and 3.5% the week after. Across the five weeks from 4 May to 7 June, 79 of 493 substantial complaints, 16.0%, were about the camera refusing to read a barcode.
Reviewers date the start themselves:
Scanning product issues since last update 5/6. Have to restart my phone with every order and sometimes in the middle of an order.
Versions tell the same story without any interpretation from us. Every Spark build from spring 2026 onward with at least 100 substantial negative reviews:
| Build | Scanner complaints | Substantial negatives | Share |
|---|---|---|---|
| 4.37.1 | 0 | 207 | 0.0% |
| 4.38.00 | 3 | 217 | 1.4% |
| 4.39.1 | 25 | 215 | 11.6% |
| 4.40.0 | 28 | 145 | 19.3% |
| 4.40.1 | 25 | 121 | 20.7% |
| 4.41.0 | 7 | 207 | 3.4% |
| 4.42.0 | 4 | 279 | 1.4% |
| 4.43.0 | 1 | 113 | 0.9% |
| 4.44.00 | 8 | 156 | 5.1% |
| 4.45.0 | 2 | 176 | 1.1% |
| 4.46.0 | 9 | 201 | 4.5% |
Three consecutive builds carry the whole spring. Before them, one complaint in a hundred at most. After them, never more than about one in twenty.
What It Looks Like From the Aisle
The descriptions are unusually consistent. 38 of the 131 describe the scanner screen going black, blank, dark or white, and a pattern that recurs is that the first scan works and a later one does not.
After the latest update, the app cannot pull up my camera anymore. It loads up for the first item to scan, but when trying to scan another item on the order, it just pulls up a black screen. Reinstalling the app or restarting phone does not work. I have to manually enter each barcode which is tedious.
Spark App is a great, IF it works right. Since the last update, the camera to scan items doesn't work right. Sometimes its blank screen, sometimes it won't focus to read the UPC. It will stop working if your screen times out, you get a phone call, check incoming texts, etc. The only way to get it back is to restart your phone.
I like doing this but they app keeps getting buggier and buggier... This was never an issue until the most recent update but now about every 5 times I try to scan something the camera wont load and I have to force stop the app
That second review lists the triggers: the screen timing out, an incoming call, checking a text. Three more reviewers independently name the same kind of interruption, a locked screen or a phone call, as the moment the scanner dies. A five star reviewer puts it in one line: the scanner blacks out when you go into other apps. We cannot confirm the cause from reviews, but four people pointing at the same trigger is the most useful pattern here, because it is the one a driver can partly control.
What it costs is time, and drivers count it.
scanner stops working after 3 items. was really hoping worth the recent update this would be fixed. I don't know how people shop for large orders typing in number manually. plus you have me walking circles around the store so no wonder it takes so long to ship. I've done 4 shops and happens every time. makes it go slower. not doing shops anymore until it's fixed.
7 times in the last week in the middle of shopping orders the app would not scan the barcode and I would have to uninstall and reinstall the app on my phone. Two orders got canceled because of this costing me 70 dollars. They need to look into this malfunction
26 of the 131 say they fell back to typing UPCs by hand, and 35 describe restarting the whole phone, either as the fix they rely on or as something they tried that did not work. Five say an order was cancelled or timed out because they could not scan.
The Workarounds, and How Many Of Them Fail
This is where the corpus is most useful to a driver searching the problem, because it contains a small experiment: dozens of people trying the same fixes and reporting back.
23 uninstalled and reinstalled the app. Several say it works for one order and then the problem returns. 35 restarted the phone, and at least two say that did not help either. Clearing the cache, signing out and back in, and force stopping the app all appear repeatedly, and so do reports that none of them stuck.
Ever since the live store map update I have issues with shopping orders. I can scan an item's barcode when first starting the trip with no issues BUT any item after that my camera freezes or I get a black screen. I've cleared the app's cache, restarted my phone, uninstalled and reinstalled the app, and have still not had anything permanently fix this issue. The only way I'm able to work around this is by force closing the app after scanning EVERY SINGLE ITEM. Any feedback would be appreciated!
I'm new to Spark, and I've noticed that for the past few days, when I start scanning barcodes, the app blacks out and stops working. I've restarted my phone each time, which fixes it temporarily, but restarting takes several minutes. Also, forcing the app to stop doesn't work. I'm using a Samsung phone. Hopefully, the app can be improved for Android users.
One fix appears less often and fails less often. Resetting Spark's camera permission comes up in five reviews: four say it brings the scanner back, and one lists permissions among the troubleshooting that did not help. A one star reviewer and a four star reviewer describe it like this:
This app has been glitching out for months now and still hasn't been fixed. I'll be shopping and go to scan an item and the camera randomly decides to stop working in the app. Only way to get it to work again is to reset camera permissions in the app and wait for the app to reload. I've had to do this now probably over a hundred times. Also the new map design is horrible.
The only thing I will say, is when you do express shopping sometimes the camera blacks out and prevents your from scanning. You have to go to your spark settings and deny access to your camera and then allow access for it to work. It's a pain and inefficient when taking those types of orders.
A third reviewer describes revoking and re-enabling the camera permission from settings as the only thing that worked, after restarting the app and the phone had not. A fourth says they constantly have to play with the app's permissions mid order. That is four reports for one workaround and one against, from a cluster of 131. It is not a proof. It is the best supported fix in the corpus.
Two Reviewers Say iPhones Do Not Have It
This corpus is Google Play only, which means it cannot tell us anything about iOS on its own. But three reviewers volunteer the comparison, and it lines up with the 0.62 star gap between the two stores.
I notice problem in the app I have samsung cell phone while I am scanning items app stop the scanning and I have to enter item manually. I have done all posible troubleshooting. Permissions uninstall etc etc. I tried using an apple phone and don't have this problem.
Two say an iPhone does not have the problem, one having tried it on an Apple phone directly. A third, using a Samsung phone, hopes the app "can be improved for Android users". Three reviews are not a platform finding, and we are not presenting them as one. They are consistent with a spring build that broke the camera hand-off on some Android phones, and with an App Store rating that did not take the same damage.
It Was Fixed. Then Something Else Broke.
Our main filter only reads 1 to 3 star reviews, so we went looking in the four and five star reviews for the end of the story.
36 four and five star reviews since May describe the same scanner failure, which is itself a finding: a lot of drivers rated the app well while telling Walmart the scanner was broken. 20 of those 36 are from May. And on 14 July, on build 4.42.0, one of them reports the thing we were looking for:
Just a few small tweaks, they finally got the camera working better so it doesn't go black screen while trying to scan an item.
The negative curve agrees. 36 of the 38 black screen reports fall in May and June. After June there is exactly one, in August. Build 4.42.0 carries 1.4% and 4.43.0 carries 0.9%.
But the monthly share never goes back to the old 0.1%. It rises again to 2.9% in August and 4.1% in September, and when you read those reviews they are describing something else. Eight reviewers quote a "technical issue" prompt when scanning, and all eight are dated July or later. Thirteen reviews from July onward describe the app freezing or hanging after a scan, rather than the camera going black.
app has many issues. wont load orders & I have reported the problems for 4+months now an its still not fixed very frustrating bc after I scan 1 item it will say "technical issue" an wont let me scan another item till I close out the app an restart it.
Frequently crashes and gives "technical issue" prompts when trying to scan barcodes. This issue doesn't go away and won't let me scan a barcode until I restart my phone. Update: FIX YOUR APP. It has crashed 3 times in 20 minutes on an order with 11 items. I should've finished shopping 10 minutes ago and I still have 7 items to go!
Several of these drivers say it has been going on since May or June, which suggests some of them never saw the fix at all:
Please fix the freezing after every scan. it's very annoying and wastes so much time. I have had the problem since the June update and it isn't fixed yet.
for 3 months now, after scanning an item barcode, the camera freezes when trying to scan the next item. I have to pull my camera up in between each scan to "fix" it.
That last reviewer has found their own workaround: opening the camera between every single scan. Another, quoted above, force closes the app after every item. Those are not fixes. They are what people do on a timer when the tool keeps breaking and the job still has to be done.
Several Drivers Blame the New Store Map
Five of the 131 connect the scanner trouble to the in-store navigation map that arrived in the same period, the one several reviewers say now takes up half the screen.
New update nothing but problems!!! ever since they added the cart path navigation the app has been terrible it uses an insane amount of resources constantly freezes makes the camera sometimes not work to scan you PC I am regularly having to restart my phone to get it to work.
We cannot test that from review data, and we are reporting it as a claim rather than a cause. It is worth noting only because it is the most common explanation drivers reach for on their own, and because the map complaints and the scanner complaints rise in the same weeks.
Step 1: Check Your Spark Version Before Anything Else
The black screen cluster sits almost entirely on builds 4.39.1, 4.40.0 and 4.40.1, and reports fall away from 4.41.0 onward. If you are still on one of those three, updating is the first thing to do, because it is the only change in this corpus that lines up with the complaints stopping.
Step 2: Avoid the Triggers Mid Order
Four reviewers name the moment the scanner dies: the screen timing out, locking the phone, taking a call, or switching to another app. If your phone is set to lock quickly, lengthen the screen timeout before a shopping order and try not to leave the app until the last item is scanned.
Step 3: Reset the Camera Permission Before You Restart the Phone
Four reviewers say that denying and then re-allowing Spark's camera permission brought the scanner back, against one who says it did not help. It is faster than a full restart, which one driver says takes several minutes. Open the phone's app settings for Spark Driver, turn camera access off, turn it back on, and return to the order.
Step 4: Do Not Rely on Reinstalling
23 drivers reinstalled the app and several report the scanner failing again within an order or two. It costs you a sign in, and in one report the app then limited further sign in attempts. Treat it as a last resort rather than a routine.
Step 5: Know the Manual Entry Path, and Its Limits
26 drivers fell back to typing UPCs by hand. It works, but at least one reviewer says the manual field also rejected valid codes, and one says a barcode with more than one zero would not go through. If manual entry fails on the correct product, contact support from inside the order before marking the item unfound, because five drivers here lost or had an order cancelled over this.
Step 6: If You Now See "Technical Issue", It Is a Different Problem
The July to September reports describe a freeze and a "technical issue" prompt, not a black camera. The workarounds reported for it are closing and reopening the app or restarting the phone, and nothing in the corpus suggests the camera permission reset helps. Report it with the build number: the reviews that name a version are the ones that make this pattern visible.
