Google Maps Won't Stay in Satellite: 48 Reviews (2026)

Google Maps holds 3.23 stars on Google Play from 19,542,147 ratings, on more than ten billion installs. The store's own histogram explains the number: 9,064,301 of the 19,542,122 ratings it counts, 46.4% of everything the store has collected, are 1 to 3 stars. The same app holds 4.67 stars from 7,370,411 ratings on the App Store. That is a gap of more than a star and a third between two listings for the same product.

We pulled the 40,000 most recent US Google Play reviews, running from 5 February to 16 September 2026. 215 of those days carried reviews, between 1 and 384 a day, with one hole: Play returned 72 reviews on 29 August, one on 30 August and nothing at all until 9 September, so every September figure below covers 9 to 16 September only. 16,021 of the 40,000 were 1 to 3 stars, and 6,825 of the negatives were substantial (120 characters or more). 68.6% of those were 1-star.

109 of the 6,825 mention satellite view. We read every one of them. 48 describe the same thing: the app is set to open in satellite view, and it opens in the default map instead.

The Satellite view is not working properly. Even though Satellite mode is selected, Google Maps switches back to the default map every time I reopen the app. I have to select another map type and then select Satellite again to make it work. I also cleared the cache, but the issue still persists.

The Number That Was Zero Until August

The 48 are not spread across the window. They are stacked at the end of it.

Across February, March, April, May and June we read 4,421 substantial negative reviews and not one of them describes this. The first two arrive on 30 and 31 July. The third arrives on 8 August, and from that day the reports are continuous to the end of the corpus.

That is why we pulled 40,000 reviews rather than the 4,000 we usually start with. A short window would have shown a cluster with no beginning. Five months of silence in front of it is what makes the July break readable.

What the 48 Actually Describe

The complaint is narrow and it repeats almost word for word. The reviewer has set the map type to satellite. The app opens in the default map. The setting still shows satellite as selected. 22 of the 48 describe the same workaround: switch the map type to default, then switch it back to satellite, and it renders correctly until the app is closed.

Some time ago, the "Start app in satellite view" setting stopped working. Now, when launching the app, it just shows the standart app, minus roads and most details. To get an actual map, I need to switch to the standard map and then switch back to the satellite map.

I have it selected to start in satellite mode but every time I close the app and reopen it, I have to unselect satellite mode and turn it back on. just started doing this about a week ago. very frustrating!

Two reviewers name the setting exactly as it appears in the app, "Start app in satellite view". Five mention clearing the cache, clearing app data, reinstalling or rebooting, and none of them report that it helped for good. That last number is a floor, not a census: it counts only reviewers who wrote the word down.

Eight Reviews Answer Google Back

8 of the 48 are replying to a developer response rather than writing a fresh complaint, and several of them say the reply told them to enable a setting they had already enabled.

The developer response completely missed the bug. “Start app in satellite view” IS ALREADY ENABLED. Maps ignores the setting on startup. Manually switching Default → Satellite fixes it until the app is restarted, then the bug returns. The setting remains enabled the entire time. Please escalate this as an Android Maps bug instead of sending instructions explaining how to enable a setting that is already enabled.

Map type keeps opening in default instead of satellite. Changing this in SETTINGS as the developer recommends does not fix the issue. Extremely frustrating.

We cannot see the replies. Play shows developer responses on the listing, not in the review payload we pull, so what we have is the reviewer's account of what they were told. Taken at face value, it describes a support loop: the user reports that a setting is being ignored, and the answer explains how to turn the setting on.

What the Version Tags Say, and What They Cannot

The 48 carry eleven different build families. 14 are on 26.32, 11 on 26.36, 5 on 26.33, 4 each on 26.31 and 26.34, 3 on 26.35, 2 each on 26.37 and 25.38, and one each on 26.30, 25.44 and 26.08.

In this corpus, 26.31 first appears in a review on 28 July, 26.32 on 6 August, 26.33 on 12 August and 26.36 on 9 September. The two July reports carry 26.30 and 26.31. The reports begin in volume two days after 26.32 shows up.

That is a coincidence in time, not a proven cause. A Google Play version tag is the build the reviewer happened to have installed when they wrote, not the build that changed anything, and Maps ships staged rollouts, so users receive the same version number on different days. The honest reading is that the reports start in the 26.31 to 26.32 window and continue through every build since.

It Is Not Only in the Negative Reviews

The 48 come out of 1 to 3 star reviews of 120 characters or more. That filter hides two other groups.

9 reviews rated 4 or 5 stars describe the same behaviour, between 7 August and 14 September, usually while saying they like the app.

In the old versions you could select satellite view and it would remain that way, now it needs to be selected every time I open the app.

9 more negative reviews are too short to make our length cut and say the same thing in a sentence. So 48 is a floor for what this corpus holds, before counting anyone who never wrote a review at all.

One 5-star review from 13 March describes the identical behaviour. We are not claiming the app never did this before August. We are claiming that in 4,421 substantial negative reviews written before July, nobody complained about it.

Three Reviewers Report the Opposite

Three reviewers describe the reverse fault, two in the US pull and one in Czech: the map opens in satellite when they have set default.

There is a bug in which the default map view is always replaced by the satellite view at app opening. There is no way to keep the satellite view at all times.

The Czech one is from 13 June, six weeks before the first report in the other direction. Three cases against 48 is not a pattern, and we include them because a preference that is ignored in both directions is a different bug from one that always loses to the default. We cannot tell which this is.

Not Only in English

We swept 34 country and language buckets on Google Play. Five English buckets (UK, Canada, Australia, India, Philippines) returned nothing the US pull had not already seen, and Mexico, Argentina, Portugal and Egypt duplicated Spain, Brazil and Saudi Arabia. That is the rule we keep confirming: a language, not a country, is what makes a review new.

The remaining 24 buckets gave 14,400 reviews the US pull never saw, 2,039 of them substantial negatives. 40 mention satellite. 16 describe the same startup behaviour, 13 of them in six languages other than English. The earliest is German, on 2 August, in the same week as the US break.

The German reviewer had been through updates and says it is still not fixed. The Portuguese reviewer is on a Samsung S25 Ultra, the Polish one on a Pixel 10, and a US reviewer on an S26 Ultra. This is not one manufacturer's problem.

What You Can Try

Nothing below is an official fix and we cannot promise any of it works for you. These are the steps this corpus reports, cheapest first, and they exist because 48 people wrote down what they tried.

Step 1: Check the setting's real name and state

Open Maps, tap your profile picture, then Settings, and look for "Start app in satellite view". Every reviewer in this cluster reports it is already on. If yours is off, turn it on, and you are done. If it is on and the map still opens in default, you have the same thing they have, and steps 2 to 5 are what is left.

Step 2: Use the two-step switch as a workaround

Open the layers button, pick Default, then pick Satellite again. 22 of the 48 say this renders the satellite layer correctly, and that it lasts until the app is closed. It is not a fix, it is a way to get a working map in the next ten seconds.

Step 3: Update, then check your build

The reports run across every build from 26.30 to 26.37, so a newer version is not a guaranteed cure, but the alternative is running an old build with the same bug. Check your version in Settings, then About, and compare it against the Play listing.

Step 4: Clear the cache before you reinstall

Five reviewers describe clearing cache, clearing data, reinstalling or rebooting. None of them report it held. Clear the cache first because it costs nothing, and be aware that clearing data signs you out and drops your offline maps.

Step 5: Report it in terms the reply cannot miss

8 reviewers describe getting an answer that explained how to enable the setting they already had enabled. If you use Send feedback in the app, or write a review, say in the first line that the setting is enabled and that the map opens in default anyway. Name your device and your build. That is the sentence that makes the difference between a canned reply and a bug report.

Step 6: If you need satellite for a job, keep a fallback

Three of the 48 say they are leaving for another map app. If satellite imagery is what you actually work with, have a second app installed before the day you need it, rather than during it.

What This Does Not Show

Negative reviews are self-selected. 21,594 of the 40,000 reviews we pulled are 5-star. 48 reports is 0.7% of substantial negatives in this window and a rounding error against ten billion installs. This is a clean, datable signal, not a measure of how many people are affected.

We cannot reproduce any of it. We do not know whether the setting is being ignored, overridden by a data saver, lost on cold start or failing to load imagery and falling back. Reviewers describe symptoms, not code.

September is eight days. The 3.6% for September rests on 466 substantial negatives from 9 to 16 September, because Play returned nothing for the nine days before that.

This is Android. The App Store listing holds 4.67 stars on version 26.37.3 and this article says nothing about how Maps behaves there.

Counts are floors. Every sub-count above comes from a narrow phrase rule over reviews we then read by hand. A reviewer who hit this and described it in different words is not in the 48.
