Groupon Refund Refused: What 79 Reviews Show (2026)

By Unstar · Editorial Team

Groupon holds 4.38 stars from 1,707,435 Google Play ratings. We read 496 substantial negative reviews from a 12 month window. 147 mention a refund and 79 describe being refused or paid in Groupon Bucks, and the reason given is rarely the merchant: it is the three day window or a voucher already marked redeemed.

A refund is the part of a deal nobody reads until it is the only part that matters. In the 4,000 most recent US Google Play reviews for Groupon, 79 people describe asking for their money back and not getting it, and the reasons they are given are strikingly consistent: the purchase is past three days, the voucher counts as redeemed, or the money comes back as Groupon Bucks rather than cash.

The refund policy states, "For local deals, customers can return any unredeemed Groupon for a refund of the amount paid within the first three days after purchase." Nowhere in the policy does it state that the refund will be in Groupon bucks.

what it doesn't tell you is that refunds are Groupon Bucks and don't refund to your original payment. that's what it doesn't tell you when it says you can get a full refund if you cancel before a certain time before the event.

The first reviewer went and read the policy, then found the gap between what it says and what happened. The second describes the same gap from the other end. That gap is what this piece measures.

What We Read

We pulled the 4,000 most recent US Google Play reviews for Groupon on 11 September 2026, along with the live store metadata. The listing shows 4.38 stars from 1,707,435 ratings on more than 100 million installs, at version 26.13.0. On the App Store the same app holds 4.80 from 590,803 ratings, so everything below describes what Android reviewers report and nothing else.

Because Groupon collects reviews slowly for an app its size, 4,000 of them reach back to December 2024. To keep the piece current we cut the corpus to the last twelve months, 11 September 2025 to 10 September 2026. That window holds 1,894 reviews, of which 763 were 1-3 stars and 496 were long enough to describe something at 100 characters or more. Every count below comes from those 496. Of them, 423, or 85.3%, are one star, one of the highest one star shares we have measured in a mainstream shopping app.

Two caveats before the numbers. First, these are shares of complaints, not shares of customers: 1,131 of the 1,894 were 4 or 5 stars and we did not read them. Second, we counted what people wrote. We did not buy a voucher, fail to redeem it or file a refund request, so nothing here is a test of the product. It is a census of the complaints.

Quick Answer: Does Groupon Refuse Refunds?

Refunds are the single biggest thing Groupon reviewers write about. A keyword screen for refund language matches 147 of the 496 substantial negative reviews, 29.6%. Narrowing to reviewers who describe asking and being refused, or being paid in credit instead of money, a screen returned 91; we read all 91 and removed 12 that were general warnings with no case of their own, leaving 79, or 15.9% of all detailed complaints. Inside that group the mechanics repeat: 25 reviewers say they were given Groupon Bucks rather than a refund to their card, 11 name the three day window as the reason they were refused, 15 describe a merchant that was closed, unreachable or would not take the voucher, and 7 say the voucher failed at the counter and they paid for the same thing twice.

Where the Refund Complaints Sit

Splitting the 496 by month shows this is not one bad week. It is the steady state.

MonthSubstantial complaintsMention a refundShare
October 2025481327%
November 2025541833%
December 2025441636%
January 202629724%
February 2026341338%
March 2026381129%
April 202629517%
May 202633824%
June 2026822328%
July 2026451738%
August 2026281036%

Eleven complete months, and the refund share never drops below 17% or rises above 38%. The two partial months at either end of the window are left out of the table but counted in the totals. Nothing here looks like a spike attached to an incident. It looks like a policy that produces a steady rate of angry people.

1. The Three Day Window Is the Whole Policy

Eleven reviewers name the refund window itself as the reason they were refused. The number they give is three days, or 72 hours, and several of them point out the same structural problem: a local deal is a booking, and bookings do not happen inside three days.

Be wary of Groupon regarding with their refund as they have a 3-day refund policy, after that they refund you in Groupon bucks. The voucher I purchased I have to wait 24 hours to use. I spoke to an AI and live that I wanted a regular refund, and both stated that it's past 3 day and can only do groupon bucks.

very poor services. scammed. they say 3 day cancelation and appointments has to be made with vendors. these vendors dont give appointments with those 3 days. and after 3 days they say we cant refund and only can give credits. happened with my miami trip. never gonna use this app.

Plans change or something go wrong with the merchant? too bad. Groupon doesn't allow any kind of refund or exchange outside of a 72 hour purchase window. Literally one of the worst return policies I've ever heard of. They didn't used to be like this.

The second of those is the sharpest version of the argument. You buy a spa or restaurant voucher, the merchant's next opening is two weeks out, and by the time you find that out the refund window has closed. The reviewer is not describing a broken feature. They are describing a policy whose clock runs on the purchase rather than on the service.

Two more say they were inside the window and were refused anyway.

I WAS SCAMMED!!!!! They sold me a membership I was not eligible for at Sam's club and would not return my money Even though it was within the 3-day window of

Its a big scam, I never received the item I paid for and they said they wouldn't refund me since it had been 3 days since I purchased the item I never received. What a joke.

The second one is worth reading twice. The item never arrived, and the answer was that three days had passed since the purchase of the thing that never arrived.

2. The Refund That Is Not Money

This is the largest mechanic in the corpus. Twenty five reviewers say the money came back as Groupon Bucks, the platform's own credit, rather than to the card they paid with. Several say they were never offered the choice.

Groupon is a scam. I went to cancel my purchase and I was supposed get the option of original form of payment or Groupon bucks. I was automatically given Groupon bucks. I wrote Groupon twice about refunding my original form of payment and they never responded. So now I'm disputing the payment on my credit card and Groupon had the nerve to object to it! Just give me back my money!

Not only was the shipping price not even hinted at before paying for an offer, when I tried to get a refund because paying 80% of the deal's value again as shipping is ridiculous, and despite me paying by card, I was refunded in their in-app currency automatically. Can't even complain to support because they don't have a support to contact. Disgusting app and company.

I purchased a certain item and was not able to use it as advertised. Rather than a refund I was given groupon bucks. Forcing me to have to continue to use Groupon if I don't want to lose the money. NOT A FAN

The first is the most complete account anyone gives: the option was supposed to exist, it was not offered, two written requests went unanswered, and the card dispute that followed was contested by Groupon. The second says the conversion happened automatically for a card payment. The third names the consequence that makes this different from a slow refund. Credit is only spendable in the place that disappointed you.

One reviewer went to the policy text itself, and that is the quote we opened with: the published rule promises a refund of the amount paid within three days and says nothing about the form it comes back in.

Three more describe being pushed toward credit while a live agent was on the other end.

I am livid. I purchased something couldn't use it because of their system failure and they want to give me BUCKS. Groupon bucks are only good on Groupon.

It asked for my zipcode and the website supposedly found a moving service for my area, but when I tried to actually use it the moving company said they don't service my area. Groupon wouldn't even refund me back to my original payment method, only in Groupon bucks..

Feels scammy. Tons of hidden fees. I tried to get a massage, the masseuse was booked months out. Not to mention there was an additional deposit fee in the fine print. I tried to get a refund within an hour of purchase, Groupon did everything it could to give me useless Groupon bucks instead of my money back. I had to contact support and deal with their AI chatbot before I got my money back. I do not recommend.

The last of those is the only account in the corpus where insisting worked. The reviewer asked within an hour of purchase, refused the credit, went through the chatbot, and got the money back. It is here because it is the one procedure in twelve months of complaints that ended with cash.

3. "Redeemed" Closes the Door

Eight reviewers describe a refund refused because the voucher was marked as redeemed, viewed or opened. What makes this group sharp is that in several cases the reviewer says the service was never delivered.

#GrouponNeverAgain Purchased 9 groupons for a vendor. Attempted to use one, vendor website would not accept. Contacted Groupon via Chat (humans not available) and they were unable to resolve.

Beware, I purchased a voucher for jet skiing in San Diego and some unknown party redeemed & used it. Groupon has refused to refund the money.

Groupon's customer service is an absolute scam, and you'll never get any issue resolved. Groupon customer service kept me in an endless loop with no resolution. I canceled an activity correctly, but my voucher showed as redeemed. The business confirmed I was never there and said Groupon must refund me.

I had a horrible experience with Groupon. I purchased 2 vouchers for flowers on their website for farm fresh flowers and get scammed. I will never use either company again! they advertise something they don't do. They took my money and will.not do a refund cause I viewed the voucher. Stayed far away!!!

terrible app. horrible ai experience. bought 6 tickets for Santa Monica pier. Asked for a refund because I never used it. Was told I couldn't because I opened it. Will never use this app again. So disappointing.

Read those in order and the flag gets looser as you go: redeemed by a vendor whose site would not accept it, redeemed by an unknown party, marked redeemed for an activity the business confirms never happened, and finally refused because the buyer viewed or opened the voucher at all. Eight reports is a small cluster and we are labelling it as one. It is here because it is the only mechanic in this corpus where the thing that blocks the refund is a status flag rather than a deadline, and a status flag can be set by somebody other than you.

One Spanish reviewer, quoted in full further down, describes the version of this that worries us most: merchants who redeem the voucher before the service is performed.

4. When the Voucher Fails at the Counter

Seven reviewers describe the specific ending where the voucher will not load or scan at the business, they pay full price on the spot, and the refund request is then refused. A keyword screen returned 10; we read them and removed 3 that turned out to be about shipping costs or a price change rather than a failed redemption.

horrible! they are crooks! i purchased a groupon to get my oil changed. But then the merchant said they couldn't use it. they scanned the barcode and nothing happened. So then I had to pay cash out of my pocket for said Oil change, and then i'm out to cash in my pocket And i'm out the money in my bank account that I use to buy the

I paid for a voucher that wouldn't load. I had to pay out of pocket. I have my receipt, and they refused to give me a refund. The app kept glitching. Kept crashing. I will never use Groupon again

I am unable to copy QR code from my Laptop to my phone! I had to pay full price at Valvoline today because my coupon would not load to my phone!

I purchased a Groupon for the Christmas in Color light show, but the redemption code didn’t work. Groupon gave me multiple replacement codes and none worked. I had to buy a full-price ticket directly and never used the Groupon.

Corrupt app & service. Unreliable & Groupon is fully aware. I had timed tickets for the aquarium but the vouchers would not load nor would "customer service". It was father's day so I screen recorded the error & bought new tickets onsite confident that groupon would refund me for the unused vouchers.

The last one is the most instructive thing anyone did. The reviewer screen recorded the error at the aquarium, bought replacement tickets on the spot, produced the recording, and was given 30 dollars of credit against a 122 dollar purchase. Evidence changed the outcome. It did not change the currency.

5. The Merchant Is Closed, Gone or Not Taking It

Fifteen reviewers describe a merchant that could not or would not honour the voucher: out of business, moved, unreachable, no availability, or simply no longer accepting Groupon. This is the group where the refusal is hardest to follow, because the buyer has done nothing wrong and the seller is not there.

Groupon refused to stand behind the service they sold. I contacted the merchant to schedule my introduction class and was told I wasn't in their system, they had no availability, and they couldn't help me because they had nothing to do with Groupon.

BUYERS BEWARE!!! SCAM!! I purchased several vouchers from Groupon for various activities while on vacation. A couple of the merchants were unreachable, the venues were closed and they did not have a phone number they could be reached.

there is no live agent to speak to with Groupon. they continue to deny my reimbursement of a voucher for a wheel alignment after I discovered the local shops that the voucher is for quit honoring the tickets.

sold me a voucher for a company that is no longer in business. I try to contact Groupon and all you get is your AI generated customer service which is no good, I've been dealing with this for over 3 weeks now and I still have no reply ..don't waste your money if they don't make sure the company is in business

BEWARE SCAM. Restaurants that have closed down are listed and they will lie and tell you it's still open. They do NOT want to give you your money back to the point of fraud. Don't trust Groupon. Check reddit, it happens often.

The wheel alignment one is the cleanest statement of the problem. The shops named on the voucher stopped honouring it, the buyer discovered this themselves, and the answer was still no. The last reviewer makes a stronger claim, that closed businesses stay listed, and we cannot verify that from review text alone. We include it because two other reviewers in this window describe buying a voucher for a business that had already shut.

6. There Is No One to Ask

Thirty nine reviewers describe support that is a chatbot and nothing else. A screen for AI, chatbot or no-human-agent language returned 45, and we removed 6 where the mention was incidental. At 7.9% of all detailed complaints this is not the biggest cluster in the corpus, but it is the one that turns every other cluster into a longer story.

Take your money and let you deal with AI Chatbots. Groupon is quick to collect your money and more than happy to help with an actual live person when you are having difficulty checking out.

abysmal support. the app functions fine, but if for any reason you can not use your voucher (business closed, wildfire, death, etc) you will not get a refund. I'm being given the run around for 2 WEEKS for a $45 voucher. do not make big purchases on groupon. there are people on reddit out of $1000 due to Groupons horrific customer support.

They switched to more of an AI system. AI thinks you should just give your Groupon away to a friend if the place you booked at has canceled 2 times on you and can't reschedule before your Groupon

Refund service -100/10. Trying to refund a groupon is too complicated for no reason. AND They use AI to process the refunds so you have to mind ur words with a robot in order to get ur money back. would not recommend.

I have been unable to communicate w a live person. I keep getting AI despite the fact I ask to speak to a live person. repeatedly. I would not recommend Groupon to anyone for anything. There is no customer support.

The first is the sharpest observation in the whole corpus, and it is not about AI being bad at its job. It is about where the human is: available while the money is going in, absent once it has gone. The third is the one that made us check the review twice, because the suggestion it reports, give the voucher to a friend, is a real answer to a real problem that the buyer did not have.

What Reviewers Say It Cost

Thirty eight of the 496 name a dollar figure. The amounts are small by the standards of a billing dispute: $25 for an item added to a cart, $40 for trampoline park passes, $45 for a voucher that produced two weeks of run-around, $100 for an airport parking voucher the lot would not honour, $112 for a hotel room that did not exist, $333 for a weather-cancelled experience, $400 for a stack of vouchers in a city the buyer then moved away from.

They automatically checked off an item which cost $25 and put it with my cart and unknowingly checked out and was charged, When I asked for a refund Groupon said not refundable. so I lost $25. ripped off. scam to make sales

I'll never do business with Groupon again. $333 experience I had paid for was cancelled due to the weather. the company reached out to groupon for a refund. after a few weeks without seeing the money in my account, I reached out to Groupon and they told me they issued me credit and it was against company policy to refund my money back.

purchased $400 on groupons in a new area we moved to and are no longer available after only using 2. customer service doesn't respond. will have to file a charge back on my credit card

We read each of these to make sure the figure was the reviewer's own charge rather than a price they were quoting, which is a real trap in review corpora. The pattern that matters is not the size of any single number. It is the ratio. A 25 dollar dispute that costs an hour with a chatbot, two emails and a card dispute is a dispute most people abandon, and a refund policy that is only enforced against people who give up is not really a refund policy.

Step 1: Decide Inside Three Days, Not Three Weeks

Whatever else you take from this, take the clock. Reviewers who were refused overwhelmingly describe finding out about a problem after the window had closed, not during it. Before you buy a local deal, check the merchant's actual availability first, by phone or on their own booking page, and buy only once you have a slot you can keep. If you have already bought and the merchant cannot see you inside three days, ask for the refund immediately rather than waiting to see whether something opens up.

Step 2: Get the Failure on Camera Before You Pay Twice

If the voucher will not load or scan at the counter, screenshot or screen record the error before you pay full price, and keep the second receipt. One reviewer in this corpus did exactly that at an aquarium and it is the only failed redemption here that produced any money back at all. A photograph of the error is the difference between your account of what happened and no account at all, and the staff member at the till cannot give it to you later.

Step 3: Ask for the Original Payment Method, in Those Words

Several reviewers say credit was applied automatically, or offered as the default, before anyone asked them. Say in your first message that you want the refund to the original form of payment, in those words, and repeat it if the reply arrives as an offer of credit. Do not accept a credit as a placeholder while you argue, because reviewers who accepted it describe the conversation ending there.

Step 4: If You Are Given Credit, Find Out When It Expires

If you end up holding platform credit, treat it as money with a deadline attached. A German reviewer in this corpus describes an 84 euro balance from a refund disappearing on an expiry date they say they were never told about. Ask support for the expiry date in writing and put it in your calendar, and if you can spend it soon on something you would have bought anyway, do that rather than saving it for a better deal.

Step 5: Take It to the Card Issuer, but Not at the Same Time

Eight reviewers describe going to a bank, card issuer or PayPal after support went nowhere, and at least one says Groupon contested the dispute. If you get there, close the support thread first and say you are disputing the charge, then file with everything you have: the listing, the failed redemption, the second receipt, and the refusal. Opening a dispute while a refund request is still live usually freezes the merchant's ability to pay you directly, and you can end up waiting longer for the same money.

The Same Complaint in Spanish, German and French

We repeated the pull across 19 Google Play storefronts and learned something about the feed on the way: Play serves these review sets by language, not by country. The six English storefronts returned the identical set we already had, Mexico, Argentina, Chile and Colombia returned the same Spanish set as Spain, and Belgium returned France's. After dropping duplicates by review ID, eight distinct language buckets left 2,400 unique reviews, 380 of them substantial negatives, 175 from 2026. German and Spanish are the largest buckets, and the complaint arrives unchanged.

The first is the clearest statement of the credit mechanic in any language: Groupon credit is the default option, and a request for the original payment method is denied. The third describes merchants who mark the voucher as redeemed before performing the service, which is the international version of section 3 and the reason a status flag is a weak basis for refusing a refund. The German pair adds a fact the English corpus barely touches: the credit you are given has an expiry date, and one reviewer says an 84 euro balance simply vanished.

What This Does Not Show

We measured Android only. Groupon holds 4.80 from 590,803 App Store ratings against 4.38 from 1,707,435 on Google Play. That gap is large, but iOS store ratings sit higher than Android ratings across almost every app we read, so we are not going to claim it proves anything about how refunds are handled on iPhone. We did not read a single iOS review.

We cannot see Groupon's side of any dispute. Every account here is one half of a conversation. Where a reviewer says a voucher was marked redeemed by somebody else, we have their word for it. What we can say is that 79 people wrote the same shape of complaint in twelve months, and that 423 of the 496 substantial complaints are one star.

Some of these clusters are small. The redeemed flag group is eight reviews and the failed redemption group is seven. We have not established that either happens to a measurable share of purchases. We have established that reviewers describe them in enough detail to rule out simple confusion about how vouchers work.

Absence of happy endings is not proof there are none. People whose refund arrived on their card in two days have no reason to write a one star review. This corpus can tell you what goes wrong and roughly how often it is complained about. It cannot tell you the denominator.

We did not audit the current policy text. One reviewer quotes it, and that quote is theirs rather than ours. Refund terms differ between local deals, goods and travel, and they change. Check the terms attached to the specific deal before you buy rather than trusting any summary, including this one.
