Crunchyroll Dub Missing? 306 Reviews, 6 Faults (2026)

You paid for Crunchyroll, you opened the show everyone is talking about, and the audio came out in Japanese. Or the English dub played for nine seasons and then stopped. Or the subtitles were there yesterday and are not there today. Or they are there, and they are wrong.

Crunchyroll holds 4.63 stars from 4,325,035 Google Play ratings on more than 100 million installs, and 3,617,673 of those ratings, 83.6% of them, are five stars. The iOS app is rated 4.76 from 1,479,596 ratings. Neither store looks like a service in trouble. The negative reviews are a different document, and the single most repeated theme in them is not price, not ads and not buffering. It is language: the dub, the subtitles, and the gap between what the app says a show has and what actually plays.

Quick Answer: Why Is There No Dub or Subtitle on Crunchyroll?

We read 2,297 substantial negative reviews from the US Google Play store covering 12 June to 27 August 2026, and 306 of them are about language. That is 13.3% of every real complaint written in the window, and it is the largest theme in the corpus. Six faults account for all 306: the language simply is not there (117), the dub is incomplete or arrives late (36), the app lists a language the player does not offer (18), subtitles stop working (21), subtitles are there but wrong or out of sync (69), and the language controls do not do what you set them to (45). Eighty-six of the 306 mention paying, a subscription or premium in the same breath.

We cannot see Crunchyroll's licensing agreements, your region, or your account. Everything below is what reviewers describe. What is measurable is how often each description appears, whether it moves month to month, and whether it tracks a particular build.

What We Read

We pulled the 9,000 most recent Google Play reviews from the US storefront, which reach back from 27 August 2026 to 12 June 2026. Of those, 4,388 were rated 1 to 3 stars, and 2,297 had enough text to categorise. By month that is 570 in June (partial, the window opens on the 12th), 1,066 in July and 661 in August (partial, the window closes on the 27th). Because two of the three months are partial, we compare shares rather than counts.

A keyword net for anything about subtitles, dubs, captions, audio tracks or language returned 387 candidates. We read all of them and dropped 81 that were about something else: buffering, downloads that play audio over a black screen, the paywall, removed comment sections, price rises, catalogue gaps with no language angle. That is a 20.9% false positive rate, and it leaves 306 confirmed, each assigned to exactly one fault so the numbers add up instead of double counting.

We also pulled 23 non-US storefronts. The four English-language ones (UK, Canada, Australia, Philippines) returned reviews we already had from the US store, which is a known behaviour of Google Play and the reason a raw international count inflates so easily. After removing every duplicate, 9,155 unique non-US reviews remain, 2,536 of them substantial negatives across 18 storefronts.

What the 306 Reviews Are About

One hundred and eighty of the 306, 58.8%, are one star.

1. The language is not there at all

The biggest group, 117 reviews, is the simplest complaint in the set: the show exists, the dub or the subtitle track in the language the reviewer needs does not. Eighty-five of the 117 name a specific language. Hindi appears in 44 of them and English in 40, which is the first surprise in the data: the loudest two languages in a US-storefront corpus are Hindi and English, not Japanese. Sixteen reviews name two languages and three name three, so those counts overlap rather than sum.

I really used to like this app but lately almost none of the animes are English dubs. I get that there are other languages but I'm in the US and would appreciate some more dubs in English.

Very Disappointed I bought a Crunchyroll subscription specifically to watch Dragon Ball Super in Hindi, but the Hindi audio is not available. I feel completely misled and disappointed.

The long tail is where it gets interesting. Telugu, Tamil, Tagalog, French, Thai and Spanish each appear too, usually as one person explaining that a competitor has what they paid Crunchyroll for.

2. Subtitles are there but wrong or out of sync

Sixty-nine reviews are not about a missing track. The track loads, and it is bad. This bucket splits into two recognisable halves: translations reviewers believe are machine generated, and audio that drifts away from the picture.

The AI accusation is specific enough to be checkable by the people making it. Two reviewers give the exact word that broke the illusion.

Subtitles are very often wrong and nonsensical, gets names wrong so often that I'm pretty sure they use AI tools or something similar and then don't proofread.

The sync half is usually pinned to named episodes, which is unusual in review corpora and makes it easy to reproduce.

3. The language controls do not stick

Forty-five reviews are about the player rather than the catalogue. You choose an audio language, and the next episode ignores you. You turn on captions, and the next episode turns them off. You want English subtitles under an English dub, and the app will not give you both.

Newest update is garbage. Preferred audio language setting does not work and keeps reverting back to system/region default, meaning every time you try to watch an episode of anything, or you play the next episode, you have to manually change the language.

The mobile has improved, downloads work now. But why can't I see subtitles for the same audio language? It's a feature of every other streaming app, but when watching in English, and enabling English subtitles, the subtitles don't appear.

I live in the UAE and I don’t speak or read Arabic. I purchased a subscription mainly to watch anime, especially One Piece, but I was disappointed to find that there are no English or Hindi subtitle/dubbing options for the content I wanted to watch.

Thirty-six reviews describe a dub that exists but does not cover the show. The pattern is consistent across languages: the first seasons are dubbed, then the track quietly stops and the series continues in Japanese, mid-story.

This is very disappointing. The first two seasons of Naruto Shippuden are available in English dub, but after that the English dub is not available.

5. Subtitles stop working

Twenty-one reviews describe subtitles that were working and are not any more. This is the smallest bucket, and it is also the only one in the corpus with a date attached to it.

Nine of the 21 were written on 5 August 2026. That day produced 38 substantial negative reviews against a window average of 29.8 per day, and roughly a quarter of them were people who could not get subtitles onto a newly released episode. One reviewer timestamps both ends of it.

Yeah, they upped the price but haven't fixed much of the small bugs and glitches. CC and subtitles don't work anymore as of August 4th, 5:45pm. 5th of August, subtitles and CC are working again.

6. Listed as available, not in the player

The smallest bucket, 18 reviews, is the one most likely to cost a subscription. The listing page says a language is available. The reviewer pays. The player has one audio track, and it is not the one they paid for.

Is This a Bad Build?

No, and this is the part that matters most if you are waiting for an update to fix it.

Reviews carry the app version the writer had installed, so we can compare builds directly. Across every build with at least 40 substantial negatives in the window, the language share barely moves.

The month axis says the same thing.

A regression looks like the My Verizon shape: one build far worse than the others, then a fall. This does not. The spread from best build to worst is seven percentage points with no direction to it, and the month share drifts up by two points. This is not something a release broke. It is the shape of the product, and no update in the window changed it.

Outside the US, It Is the Same Complaint in Twelve Languages

The non-US corpus is where the pattern stops looking like an American licensing quirk. A keyword net over the 484 non-US candidates from 2026 returned matches in 17 storefronts. We did not hand read all 484; we read a deterministic 80-review sample drawn evenly across it, and 68 were about language while 12 were not, a 15% false positive rate close to the 20.9% we measured on the US set.

Poland is the loudest. Reviewers there describe a service that sells a subscription in Polish and then offers Polish subtitles on a fraction of the catalogue, and sometimes on only the first few episodes of a season.

If you want to watch English dub, then you are out of luck. Just wantched One Punch Man season 3, first episode is with english dub, the rest are without.

Step 1: Check the Audio Track on the Episode, Not the Show

Eighteen reviewers paid because a series page listed a language, then found the player did not offer it. The listing describes the series; the audio track belongs to the episode. Open the episode you actually want, open the language menu inside the player, and confirm the track is there before you pay or before you commit to a long series.

Step 2: Find Where the Dub Stops Before You Start

Thirty-six reviewers were dropped into Japanese mid-series. Nothing in the app warns you where a partial dub ends, as one reviewer above points out directly. Jump to the last episode of the newest season and check its audio menu. If the dub is not there, you now know the series is partially dubbed before you invest twelve hours in it.

Step 3: Set the Language Per Episode, Not Once

Forty-five reviewers set a preference that the app then ignored. Until that changes, treat the audio and subtitle menus as a per-episode action rather than a setting. It is annoying, and it is also the only behaviour the corpus reports as reliable.
