ESPN App Won't Let Me Watch: What 107 Reviews Show (2026)

By Unstar · Editorial Team

ESPN holds 4.40 stars from 1,209,731 Google Play ratings. We read 1,591 substantial negative reviews from the last twelve months. 476 of them mention money, and 107 describe paying for ESPN and still not being able to watch: sign-ins that will not stick, subscriptions the app does not recognise, and blackouts nobody mentioned at checkout.

Most people install the ESPN app to look at a score. The reviews suggest a different app: in the 4,000 most recent US Google Play reviews, 476 of the 1,591 detailed complaints mention paying, subscribing or a price, and 107 of them describe the same specific failure, which is having paid and still not being able to watch.

Forced to reauthenticate every game. I can't watch games without removing my tv provider info and resigning in every game, even on same day.

horrible... you have to pay for a subscription to ESPN and then another subscription to a TV provider. Pay twice to not even get to watch the game? no thanks

Those are the two halves of the problem. The first is mechanical: a sign-in that will not stay signed in. The second is structural: reviewers who believe they bought access and are then asked to buy it again somewhere else. This piece counts both.

What We Read

We pulled the 4,000 most recent US Google Play reviews for ESPN on 11 September 2026, along with the live store metadata. The listing shows 4.40 stars from 1,209,731 ratings on more than 100 million installs, last updated 1 September 2026. On the App Store the same app holds 4.65 from 4,149,722 ratings, so everything below describes what Android reviewers report and nothing else.

ESPN collects reviews fast. Four thousand of them reach back only to 30 September 2025, so this piece covers a shade under twelve months. That window holds 2,995 reviews at 1-3 stars, of which 1,591 were long enough to describe something at 100 characters or more. Every count below comes from those 1,591. Of them, 1,215, or 76.4%, are one star.

The complaints are not spread evenly across the year. October and November 2025 hold 544 of the 1,591, more than a third of everything written in the window, and July 2026 holds 52. That is the shape of an American sports calendar rather than the shape of a bug.

Two caveats before the numbers. First, these are shares of complaints, not shares of viewers: ESPN's Play Store histogram shows 902,998 five star ratings against 109,348 one star, and we did not read a single positive review. Second, we counted what people wrote. We did not buy a subscription, link a TV provider or try to stream a blacked out game, so nothing here is a test of the service. It is a census of the complaints.

Quick Answer: What Are ESPN Complaints Actually About?

Money, more than anything else. A keyword screen for subscription, ESPN+, Unlimited, paying, a dollar figure, cable or TV provider matches 476 of the 1,591 substantial negative reviews, 29.9%. For an app whose main job for most users is free scores and news, nearly a third of detailed complaints touching the bill is the headline finding. The sharper group is the overlap between paying and being unable to watch: a screen returned 119, we read all 119 and removed 12 that turned out to be about stream quality, casting, account management or cancelling, leaving 107, or 6.7%. Inside the money complaints the mechanics split four ways: 38 reviewers describe the TV provider sign-in failing or having to be repeated, 19 say the app tells an active subscriber to get access, 26 say they were asked for a second subscription on top of one they already pay for, 32 say they get ads anyway, and 25 describe a blackout on a game they had paid to watch.

Where the Money Complaints Sit

Splitting the 1,591 by month shows the money share moving with the season, not with any single release.

MonthSubstantial complaintsMention money or a subscriptionShare
October 20252457129%
November 20252999933%
December 20251524932%
January 20262017738%
February 2026952122%
March 20261112422%
April 20261393424%
May 2026922325%
June 2026712028%
July 2026521325%
August 2026943133%

Eleven complete months, and the share never drops below 22% or rises above 38%. The peaks sit in November and January, which is when college football, the NFL and the bowl games land, and the trough sits in the spring. The two partial months at either end of the window are left out of the table but counted in the totals.

1. The TV Provider Sign-In That Will Not Stick

Thirty eight reviewers describe the pay TV authentication failing or having to be redone. A keyword screen returned 40; we read them and removed 2 where the sign-in was mentioned only as a troubleshooting step for a playback bug. This is the most mechanical cluster in the corpus and the one with the most specific detail.

this app is pretty bad compared to the standard that should be tied to the name ESPN. I get so tired of constantly verifying myself. its almost every time I try and watch something I have to verify my service provider and on some smart devices it will enter into a never ending loop of verification.

cannot even use TV provider in app, it constantly logs out and disconnects. the button to connect a provider doesn't even function. have had this happen on 3 different phone and tablet companies with this app.

Won't verify TV provider login after repeated attempts. Has been a consistent issue with this app for months. Truly garbage.

Can't connect my TV provider and ESPN. Keep getting blank screens or looping back to the Fios sign in page. Very frustrating.

Tried to log in with my TV provider and it would not let me; it just showed me a blank white page. There was nothing I could do. I tried on Chrome, and nothing worked.

Four different endings are described there: a loop, a button that does nothing, a verification that never completes, and a blank page. One reviewer went further and described the failure well enough that it reads like a reproducible bug.

The option to start watching from the scores page doesn't work. You have to select the game and go to the gamecast screen to start the stream. Also if you try to sign back into your provider since the app unlinks it constantly, when it texts you the code and you go to your messages to get it and then go back to ESPN it resets the attempt and you have to do it all over

If the provider sends the pairing code by text and leaving the app to read the text resets the attempt, then the flow cannot be completed on a single phone, which is where most of these reviewers are. We cannot confirm that from review text alone, and one report is an anecdote. We include it because it is the only account in twelve months that names a mechanism rather than a symptom.

2. "Get Access" for People Who Already Have Access

Nineteen reviewers say the app does not recognise a subscription they are paying for. The phrase that keeps coming back is the app's own: get access.

every other week it logs out on the phone or the tv. I have an active subscription but the dumb app keeps telling me to get access.... so frustrating

Trash app and company. Virtually unusable on a browser. The app is only slightly better. Sometimes I can't access content and am told I need to "get access" even though I'm signed in and am subscribed to ESPN

If I could put zero stars, I would. I've tried to use the app to connect it to my cable provider since we do not have a box in every room in the house. The app connects, but then proceeds to tell me that I don't have this subscription. WHEN I DO. The app and ESPN in general is a freaking joke.

Epic POS app. It does not work at all. Ever. Not on my phone. Not on my laptop. Not on my Google 4K. EVER. Complete garbage. I have ESPN Unlimited through Xfinity. It does not matter that I am logged into Xfinity and can confirm that ESPN Unlimited is enabled.

I love buying a pay per view and not being able to watch it, because apparently according to the app I didn't buy it in the first. Even after countless times troubleshooting and restarting my phone It still says "get access", only to go in a big circle all for it to just say I cant complete my purchase. I'm glad this trash format is being phased out. Garbage app

The last one is the version that costs money rather than patience. A pay per view is a single purchase with no second chance: the event happens once. A reviewer who bought one, was told to get access, and then could not complete a second purchase either has lost the thing they paid for and cannot fix it by waiting.

3. Which Subscription Was It Again

Twenty six reviewers describe being asked to pay a second time. A screen for another or extra subscription language returned 41 and we removed 15 where the phrase was attached to something else, such as fast forward controls or notification settings. The specific complaint is not that ESPN charges money. It is that the tier they bought turned out not to include the thing they bought it for.

Bait and switch.... BEWARE!!!...I subscribed to ESPN+ to watch the US open tennis matches live but you cannot watch the top players. It asks you to subscribe to ESPN unlimited. Will cancel after the first month.

I can't watch any of the NHL games that have a watch link next to them. I have to purchase something on top of the espn+ I have already purchased in order to watch them. I am just going to cancel espn+.

garbage i have the espn+ subscription with my bundle on my phone plan and I have to have another subscription on top of that just to watch my Monday night game just a money grab this app is garbage

been paying for espn+ for a long time, but am unable to stream the CFP. What a rip off! Now they want me to pay for another package!?

You need to get your act together. First you make a deal with WWE and the ESPN+ I pay for and the ESPN included in my YouTube TV does not include. I have to pay a 3rd time for Ultimate.

The third reviewer's phrasing is the one to note, because it explains why this cluster is bigger than a pricing complaint. They are not comparing prices. They are describing discovering, at kickoff, that the subscription they hold is the wrong one.

One reviewer put the escalation in numbers across three years of their own billing.

Cancelling this subscription. it started out at $6.99/month and I could watch everything I wanted when the app wasn't giving me login issues... now the app is $12.99/month and I cannot watch anything I want, not even replays... anything I was watching in the past for $6.99 is now on the $29.99/ month plan... đŸ€·

We are deliberately not printing ESPN's current price list next to that. Tiers, bundles and promotional rates change, and a stale price table would be worse than none. What the quote shows is the shape of the complaint: the content moved up a tier while the subscriber stayed where they were.

4. Ads on the Paid Tiers

Thirty two reviewers say they watch ads on a subscription they pay for. A screen returned 44 and we removed 12 where the complaint was really about crashes, buffering or the interface. Nobody in this group claims ESPN sold them an ad free tier, which is worth stating plainly. They are arguing that the amount of advertising is not what they expected at the price.

Changes now force us to view ads even though we pay for the service. I encourage everyone to stop buying from any brand advertising on ESPN or any other "play + ads" scheme. Corporations should not be allowed to double - dip

I have both cable authentication and a Disney/ESPN bundle subscription, yet the app forces me to watch ads before viewing video clips. I refuse to watch any content (or ads) on this app until ads are removed, at least for paying customers.

Paying for ESPN+ and it is not cheap!! Now they are forcing me to watch ads on replays. I won't be renewing the service.

Love the app and being able to watch all the games and older games BUT PLEASE STOP PLAYING THE SAME AD OVER AND OVER AND OVER AND OVER AND OVER AND OVER AND OVER.

while the app is well designed and functionally easy to use, I have a paid subscription and find it incredibly frustrating that whenever I stream a game the app forces me to watch multiple commercials. in other words, when I fast forward to find a particular part of the game that I'd like to watch it has a default setting where it makes me watch commercials ranging from 30 seconds to 160 seconds.

The last of those is the most concrete. Commercials that run when you scrub to a point in a recorded game are a different thing from commercials that run during a live broadcast, and this reviewer is describing the first. Whether it is a setting, a rights requirement or a bug, it is the one ad complaint here that a product team could reproduce in a minute.

5. Blackouts Reviewers Say Nobody Mentioned

Twenty five reviewers describe a blackout on something they had paid for. A screen returned 28 and we removed 3 that used the word in passing. Blackouts are contractual and largely outside ESPN's control, and several reviewers say as much themselves. The complaint underneath is narrower: they say the restriction was not visible at the point of sale.

I have ESPN Unlimited, AND I subscribed to MLB Extra Innings; the latter was specifically to be able to watch Cleveland Guardian games when I'm not at home. ESPN constantly blackouts the Guardians games on weekends when I am away in New York. There was NO MENTION of blackouts when I subscribed at ESPN. Their games at the Phillies on Sat/Sunday ... blacked out again!

The reason we subscribed to ESPN+ was to watch the Tampa Bay Lightning hockey games, but they are ALWAYS "blacked out." I'm sure you'll tell me it's not your fault, and that the cable or streaming service provider has restricted access enforced by 'binding contract"...

You pay 30 plus dollars a month for games that are in your area to be in blackout. Thats wild. I was too benevolent in thinking that this wasnt just a cash grab and was supposed to provide some sort of continuity in my sports media

I am very angry paying for the espn unlimited just to find out the raiders and niners game was blacked out. I want my refund.

Edit: I've now tried getting help 4 times, have yet to receive a response. Not going to pay for this anymore, I'll pirate before I give ESPN another dollar. Same account, same house, same room. my tv plays the game I want to watch, great. But on my phone? blackout. Same everything, but one won't let me watch. I've reached out for help twice on this issue, gotten nothing.

That last one is the strangest report in the corpus, and it is strange in a useful way. The same account, in the same house, at the same moment, plays the game on the television and shows a blackout on the phone. Whatever the rule is that produced that, the subscriber cannot see it, and nothing in the app told them which device was going to work.

What Reviewers Say They Pay

Fifty seven of the 1,591 name a dollar figure. We read each one to check the number was the reviewer's own bill rather than a price they were quoting at second hand, which is a real trap in review corpora. The figure that comes up most often is $30, which appears in 34 of the 57, sometimes as the monthly price of the top tier and sometimes as the price of a single pay per view. $29.99, $35 and $38.99 turn up as monthly figures too, and one reviewer names a $72 charge for a pay per view they say they ordered by accident.

ESPN prioritizes squeezing every last penny out of their viewers. It was extremely frustrating to subscribe to ESPN, only to find out I needed the top tier Unlimited to watch tennis.

Really? How is espn unlimited @ $35 monthly not ad free? It's ONLY espn, at $35 a month.. not with Disney nor Hulu.. $35..

lol not worth $30 a month they say there is a plan for $13 a month but you cant find it anywhere. I guess ill never use espn ever again.

I wanted to watch a college football game and accidentally ordered a boxing event I didn't want. My card was charged $72 and I could not find any way to correct my mistake and not be charged. I tried ESPN Fan Support but it was no help.

The third is a small complaint with a large implication, and we could not check it: the reviewer says a cheaper plan is advertised but cannot be found in the app. The fourth is the only accidental purchase in the corpus, and it is the one case here where a self service cancel or refund control would have settled the matter without anybody writing a review.

What Reviewers Report Trying

Nothing in this corpus reads like a fix, but a few reviewers describe what changed their outcome, and they are worth repeating because they are cheap to test.

Several say the provider link survives longer if it is made from a browser rather than inside the app, and several more say a full uninstall and reinstall clears a stuck authentication for a while. One reviewer with a VPN found the specific cause of years of failure.

I am finally able to make this APP work! I have had this paid app for years and it has NEVER allowed me to watch ANYTHING! Today, I was struck by momentary intelligence and decided to split tunnel Espn from my VPN. After doing so on my cell, tablet, and laptop, I was able to open the videos on each device and watch live tennis and anything else live I'd been unable to watch in the past. I am not that computer literate, but I hope this may help someone else as well.

That is one person, and we cannot tell you it generalises. What makes it worth quoting is that a VPN sitting in front of a sports app is invisible as a cause: the app does not say a location check failed, it just fails. If you are paying, cannot watch, and have a VPN or a privacy DNS running on the phone, that is the cheapest thing on the list to rule out.

The Same Complaint in Dutch

We repeated the pull across 19 Google Play storefronts. Play serves these review sets by language rather than by country, so the six English storefronts returned the identical set we already had and we dropped those by review ID. Seven distinct language buckets left 1,762 unique reviews, 206 of them substantial negatives, 78 from 2026. Dutch is by far the largest group at 90, and what Dutch reviewers describe is the same provider pairing failure as section 1, with a sharper detail: seven of them name the pairing code itself, and all seven wrote between 9 and 30 August 2026.

Dutch

Steeds weer opnieuw moeten inloggen in tv abonnement is heel vervelend.

The second reviewer makes the claim that matters: the pairing code is correct, the subscription is fine, and it still will not connect. The third names the thing the English reviewers in section 1 keep circling, which is that there is no working option to have the device remembered, so the sign-in is a daily event rather than a one time setup.

Spanish reviewers describe the tier problem instead of the sign-in problem.

What This Does Not Show

We measured Android only. ESPN holds 4.65 from 4,149,722 App Store ratings against 4.40 from 1,209,731 on Google Play. That gap is smaller than most of the ones we see, but iOS ratings sit higher than Android ratings across almost every app we read, so we are not going to claim it proves anything about the iPhone app. We did not read a single iOS review.

A count of complaints is not a rate of failure. If the provider sign-in breaks for one subscriber in a thousand, that is still a large number of reviews and a small defect. This corpus gives you the shape of what goes wrong and the relative size of each group inside the complaints. It cannot give you the denominator.

Blackouts are not ESPN's rule to make. Rights deals decide which games are available where, and no app can show you a broadcast it does not hold the rights to in your postcode. The complaint we counted is narrower than the policy: reviewers say the restriction was not visible when they subscribed.

We did not audit the tiers. Reviewers disagree about what ESPN+, Unlimited and a bundle each include, and the packages changed during the window we measured. Where reviewers contradict each other, we counted the complaint and left the entitlement question alone rather than picking the version that made the better story.

Nobody writes a review when the stream works. The people in this corpus are, by definition, the ones who had a problem. Treat every number here as a description of the complaint pile, not a verdict on the service.
