Mercari Refund Denied? 198 Reviews, 7 Outcomes (2026)

By Unstar · Editorial Team

Mercari holds 4.75 stars from 614,961 Google Play ratings, 88.97% of them five stars. We read 787 negative reviews from nine months: 198 describe what happens when a deal goes wrong, and 34 of those are about a clock and a rating that do not survive a dispute.

The item arrives and it is the wrong size, or it is broken, or it is a convincing fake. Or nothing arrives at all and the tracking says delivered. You open a case, and somewhere in the next few days the sale quietly closes itself and the seller's page still shows five stars.

Mercari holds 4.75 stars from 614,961 Google Play ratings on more than 10 million installs, and 547,114 of those ratings, 88.97% of them, are five stars. The iOS app is rated 4.85 from 1,943,225 ratings. Neither store suggests a platform in trouble. The negative reviews are a different document, and the most repeated complaint in them is not about a bad seller. It is about what the platform does with the clock and the rating once a deal has already gone wrong.

Quick Answer: What Happens When a Mercari Deal Goes Wrong?

We read 787 substantial negative reviews from nine months of the US Google Play store and categorised 198 of them into seven outcomes. The largest is money that sits somewhere while a case is open (46). The most structurally interesting is the one we call the clock (34): reviewers describe a short window after delivery, and describe losing the ability to rate a seller once a return, cancellation or refund is involved. Sixteen of the 34 say they could not leave a rating at all on a transaction that went wrong, eleven name a three day or 72 hour window, and five say a five star rating was posted on their behalf.

We cannot audit Mercari's policies, systems or case decisions. Everything below is what reviewers describe. What is measurable is how often each description appears and whether it moves over nine months.

What We Read

We pulled the 3,000 most recent Google Play reviews from the US storefront and kept the 787 rated 1 to 3 stars with enough text to categorise. They run from 18 December 2025 to 26 August 2026, spread across nine months: 32, 119, 80, 109, 100, 82, 89, 105 and 71. December and August are partial, so we compare shares rather than counts.

A keyword net for returns, refunds, disputes, protection, counterfeits, damage and undelivered packages returned 241 candidates. We read all of them and dropped 43 that were about something else: search and interface bugs, notification spam, fee levels on their own, listing moderation with no transaction attached, account verification, harassment between users. That leaves 198 confirmed, each assigned to exactly one outcome.

Two limits worth stating. First, we only see the complaint, never the case file, so a review saying a refund was denied unfairly is a claim, not a finding. Second, the corpus is one sided by construction: it is drawn from 1 to 3 star reviews, which is why the article measures the distribution of complaints rather than the odds of a bad transaction.

Note how evenly buyers and sellers are represented. Three outcomes are buyer side, two are seller side, and both sides describe the same feeling: that the platform closed the case in the other party's favour and moved on.

1. Money held, delayed, or turned into credit

The largest group, at 46, is not about who was right. It is about a balance that stops moving. Refunds that take weeks, payouts that wait, and small refunds converted into site credit that expires.

They have a refund policy on $15 or less where they auto refund you "Mercari credits", which expire, instead of giving your money back. Terrible system, and their support claimed there is no way for them to change that. Just use ebay.

This was my first purchase with Mercari. The item was not shipped to me. My payment was held for 16 days, and only then were the funds returned.

I've been waiting to hear back on a return for a month and they TOOK PAYMENT WITHOUT RESOLVING ANYTHING!!! The order page shows under review but is hiding how it TOOK MY MONEY AND RAN!!

One reviewer describes the lost package clock in more detail than most, and it is worth reading because it explains why the wait can stretch.

Mercari’s refund policy is flawed. They make you wait 30 days from the “last tracking scan,” but USPS scans bins, not always individual packages. If a package is lost, tracking can loop and Mercari keeps resetting the clock based on scans that never actually happened to your package.

2. The clock and the rating

This is the group that made us write the article. Thirty four reviews are about timing and feedback rather than about the item, and they describe two mechanisms that reinforce each other.

The first is a window. Eleven of the 34 name a three day or 72 hour limit for rating or raising a problem after delivery.

really good for sellers, really bad for buyers. you only get a 3 day window for a refund if your purchase is defective, so you better pray it breaks before the 4th day or they will just straight up rip you off.

Full of counterfeit goods and bootleg DVDs. Not only do they have no buyer protection but you only got 72hrs to rate and return anything.

Charges for buyer protection but makes it impossible to give the seller the benefit of a doubt and forcing orders to be "completed" after 3 days.

The second is what happens to the rating when a transaction fails. Sixteen of the 34 say they could not leave a rating at all once the deal was cancelled, returned or refunded, and several draw the obvious conclusion themselves.

DO NOT USE The entire rating system on this app is designed to hide bad transactions by sellers. If they screw up and you have to return something you loose the ability to rate the seller leaving only completed/positive transactions up for review.

Sellers can cancel your orders for any reason and keep your money locked up for however long you're willing to wait with no repercussions.

They don't hold sellers accountable. You can purchase something from a seller and the seller can cancel for any reason.

super shady business practices. if you want to return something under $20, they say it's not worth their time and force you to take store credit that expires in 90 days.

One reviewer went and looked at a seller's page to check.

they allow scammers with multiple claims against them to continue to sell on their app. I had the misfortune of purchasing from a counterfiet seller. upon review of his store I noticed that he somehow had a 5 star rating which seemed odd.

Five of the 34 go further and say a five star rating was posted in their name after the window closed or the case was shut.

Feedback is fake. if you haven't gotten around to rating a seller within 3 days of receiving an item, mercari automatically gives them 5 star feedback to inflate their rankings and inevitably profitability for Mercari.

Purchased a camera, it showed up and didn't work, seller offered a refund and then as soon as Mercari paid him he ghosted me and because I went straight to the seller Mercari even gave him a 5 start review on my behalf and refuses to take it down. Don't waste your time this company is just another place helping con men.

DO NOT BUY. They only protect the seller and then give FALSE 5* reviews under your name once they close the order.

And three describe the reverse trap: rating the seller first, then being told the rating ended their eligibility for a refund.

do not use this app or service. bought a book for over 100$ jackets shipper send me the book and tapped the bubble wrap to the book with some strong packaging tape. and because I left a 1 star rating im satisfied and not eligible for a refund.

Seller lied about the size of an item I bought. Return was denied despite misinformation. After trying to return, it was too late to give feedback for lying seller so now I'm out of luck with an item that doesn't fit.

Add the honest caveat here. Every sentence above is a reviewer's account of a policy, not a reading of the policy itself, and people who are angry describe rules in the shape of their own case. What is not in dispute is how consistently the same shape appears: 34 reviews across nine months, from buyers and sellers, all describing a window that closes and a rating that does not survive a dispute.

3. It arrived, and it is not the item

Thirty four reviews describe a delivered item that was misdescribed, broken or counterfeit, and a return that was refused or made impractical.

Return policy is BS. Got a wildly mislabeled garment (labeled Large was XXL). Returned it, but Mercari refuses to refund a dollar of my money.

Was sold counterfeit goods (which is against their TOS), tried to return but was denied. Reasoning for the denial you ask? They looked close enough to real ones... Yep that's what counterfeit items are Mercari.

Not a good service, the seller shipped an item and it broke on the shipping. they kept wanting me to send them pictures of the same thing for about a month till they "accepted" my return but wanted me to buy more packaging to send it in a better way it was shipped to me.

The customer service is awful. I tried to return an item and showed proof it wasn't as described and they denied it after taking forever to come to this conclusion.

4. The seller loses the return

Thirty four reviews come from the other side of the same table, and 31 of them are one star, the highest rate of any group. The recurring story is a return that comes back different from what went out.

Would rate 0/5 if possible. Sold a keyboard through here and the buyer returned it shortly after purchase saying it didn't work only to return an entirely different (broken) keyboard.

Mercari reimbursed a thief. I am a seller and the buyer wanted a return. I got the box back and found that the buyer sent me trash. I filed a claim and even recorded myself Opening the box since it was too light.

ABSOLUTLEY HORRIBLE! I got robbed by a buyer where they returned an item and stole one of its contents and instead of seller protection or something they just told me oh well we don't have enough proof. even though I submitted all photos they asked. Even the weight was off.

Buyer broke the brand new item I shipped and requested a refund and Mercari Approved his return! How, Buyer ADMITTED Item Arrived Brand New And They Still Granted Him A Refund. This App is Beyond Ridiculous!

This group also has the sharpest month to month movement: 8 in March and 9 in May against 0 to 4 in the other months. We are not going to build a theory on nine reviews in a month, but it is the only cluster in the corpus that looks bursty rather than flat.

5. Shipping charges and claims against the seller

Twenty one reviews describe money taken out of a seller's proceeds after delivery, usually a shipping adjustment, or a damage claim that was denied. Three of them name the amount.

Be warned if you are a seller! Mercari applied a massive $74.65 automated shipping surcharge to my account based on a completely incorrect transit scan.

⚠️ SELLER BEWARE: Huge Financial Risk! Mercari is a nightmare for sellers. I got hit with a $135 shipping penalty because UPS claimed my box was oversized.

Sellers Beware! UPS damaged a package that I shipped a customer. The puncture damage caused by the carrier was clear from the buyer's pic. Mecari denied the shipping protection and requested pre shipping pics, which are not part of the guidelines.

6. It never arrived, and tracking says it did

Eighteen reviews describe the hardest case for any marketplace to adjudicate, and the answer they report is the same one every time.

They don't protect the buyer. My order was stated as delivered even though I never received the package. I reached out to customer service, after an "investigation" they said the carrier said delivered and suggested the package was stolen.

The 1st and only time I don't receive a package and ask for help, even with the buyer protection fee and all, and Mercari says the post office says it was delivered, end of story. Like I would lie about this 1 package, an $8 mug.

this app charges a fee on every purchase called Buyer Protection. I did not receive my recent purchase even though tracking claims it was delivered.

7. Support could not be reached

Eleven reviews are primarily about the support channel itself rather than the outcome. Support appears in far more than eleven reviews, but for these it is the complaint.

Absolute worst customer service ever, it is impossible to get an actual human to talk to. Even if you call the number provided, you are on hold for 10 minutes and then hung up on. Happens every time.

It's a wonderful, until you have a problem or return you disagree with. Phone puts you on hold and then hangs up, Chat isn't an option and the response they requested isn't allowed.

Why the Ratings Look So Good

Here is the arithmetic that makes the clock worth understanding. Mercari's own Google Play page shows 88.97% five star ratings. Inside the app, the seller ratings that reviewers describe are close to universal five stars, and 16 reviewers in this corpus give the same explanation: the transactions that went wrong are the ones that never get rated.

We cannot verify that mechanism from the outside, and we are not claiming Mercari designed it that way. What we can say is narrower and still useful. If a rating system only records deals that completed, then the rating of a seller is not a measure of how often that seller's deals fail. It is a measure of how their completed deals went. Those are different numbers, and a buyer scanning a seller's page cannot tell them apart.

That is why the check we would run before buying is not the star count. It is the written reviews on the seller's page, and specifically whether they look like a wall of identical short praise.

Is It Getting Worse?

No. It is flat, which for a structural complaint is the more interesting answer.

The clock group sits between 1.3% and 7.0% of each month's substantial negatives with no direction. It is also spread across more than a dozen app builds, which is what you would expect from a rule rather than a bug. Nothing here looks like a regression that a future update repairs.

Twenty three of the 198 name a competing marketplace in the same review, most often eBay. Thirteen describe themselves as long term users, several with account histories going back to 2016 or 2017. This is not a corpus of first time users who misread a policy.

Outside the US

We pulled the newest reviews from 23 non-US storefronts and removed the ones that were duplicates of the US set. What is left is 533 unique non-US reviews and 58 substantial negatives, mostly Spanish. The same complaints appear in them, including the rating one, which is the strongest sign that this is structural rather than a US support problem.

One older review from a European storefront names the same window this year's US reviewers name, which puts the complaint well outside our nine month sample.

Hey scammers, want to defraud innocent buyers? Well, Mercari has your back! This is the only platform that doesn't allow returns after 3 days.

Before You Buy or Sell on Mercari

None of this makes Mercari unusable. Millions of transactions close without incident, and that is exactly what its rating shows. What the 198 reviews describe is what the platform is like on the day something breaks. Five things follow from the corpus.

Open the box on the day it lands. Eleven reviewers name a three day or 72 hour window, and several describe missing it because the package was late or because they were away.

Do not rate until you have tested the item. Three reviewers report being told their rating had already closed the case, and one names the amount they lost that way.

Read a seller's written reviews, not the star average. Sixteen reviewers describe failed transactions leaving no rating behind, which means the average is built from the deals that worked.

Photograph and weigh what you ship. In the seller side groups, the sellers who got anywhere are the ones with a drop off receipt or a video of the box being packed, and even then 34 reviewers say it was not enough.

Keep the payment trail. Eight reviewers describe escalating to a card issuer, PayPal or the Better Business Bureau after the in app case closed.
