Xbox App Won't Sign In: 367 Reviews Say Why (2026)
The Xbox app holds 4.54 stars from 2,313,199 Google Play ratings. We read 1,065 substantial negative reviews from a 174 day window and hand-verified 367 that describe being signed out and unable to sign back in, with the button doing nothing. The share went from 9.0% in May 2026 to 57.9% in July, and 10 reviewers name the same time zone workaround.
The Xbox mobile app holds 4.54 stars from 2,313,199 Google Play ratings and sits on more than 100 million installs. It is the companion app: messages, captures, remote install, Microsoft Rewards. For a large group of Android users since early July 2026, it is a green button that does nothing.
We pulled the 4,000 most recent US Google Play reviews, covering 24 March to 13 September 2026 without a gap. Of those, 2,037 were 1 to 3 stars, and 1,065 of the negatives were substantial (80 characters or more). 367 of those 1,065 say the same thing: they cannot sign in. That is 34.5% of every substantial complaint in the window, and 90.2% of the 367 are 1-star.
Randomly stopped working. I click on "Sign in or Sign up" and the app does nothing. It's broken for a lot of people.
After working fine for years, about 2 weeks ago it signed me out and I have been unable to log back in. I open the app and click the login button, and then nothing happens.
What the Failure Looks Like
The 367 are not a grab bag of login trouble. They describe one specific behaviour, and they describe it the same way. 78 of them say the button does nothing at all: no error, no prompt, no login page. 29 add the visual detail that gives the bug away, the button dimming for a moment and then going back to normal.
its impossible to sign in. you press the sign in option and it goes Grey as it is opening, then stops and goes back. LOTS of people are having this problems, fix your app xbox smh.
Sign in button darkens like it's processing, then nothing. Cleared cash, reinstalled, etc. Nothing works.
67 reviewers say the app signed them out on its own first, after months or years of staying logged in. That ordering matters: this is not people failing to remember a password. It is sessions ending and then refusing to restart.
One reviewer went further than most and pulled the device log:
Unresolved 5 weeks in & 2 failed updates. Finding (from July 3): logcat shows repeated "EventsSDK.SQLiteDB: Failed to open database file: (14) unable to open database file"
We cannot confirm what that log means. We can confirm that 367 people in one 174-day window describe the same dead button.
When It Started
Here is the share of substantial negative reviews that are sign-in complaints, month by month:
| Month | Sign-in complaints | All substantial negatives | Share |
|---|---|---|---|
| April 2026 | 15 | 106 | 14.2% |
| May 2026 | 14 | 156 | 9.0% |
| June 2026 | 21 | 137 | 15.3% |
| July 2026 | 208 | 359 | 57.9% |
| August 2026 | 86 | 210 | 41.0% |
| September 1 to 13 | 18 | 69 | 26.1% |
The baseline is real. People have always had trouble logging into this app, at roughly one complaint in seven. In July it became three complaints in five.
The daily counts place the turn in the first half of July rather than on one date. Late June runs at one to three a day. The first week of July runs at three to six. Then 12 on 12 July, 16 on 14 July, 12 on 15 July. Whatever changed, it reached people in waves rather than all at once.
Which Build
Google Play attaches the reviewer's installed version to most reviews. Among the 367:
| Version | Sign-in complaints | Share of the 367 |
|---|---|---|
| 2607.1.1 | 125 | 34.1% |
| 2606.2.1 | 58 | 15.8% |
| 2608.1.1 | 35 | 9.5% |
| 2608.1.3 | 23 | 6.3% |
| Not reported | 60 | 16.3% |
This is where we have to be careful. 2607.1.1 carries the most reports, and 35 reviewers say outright that the problem began after an update. But 58 reports come from people still on the previous build, 2606.2.1. A version tag on Google Play is the build the reviewer had installed when they wrote, not the build that broke them, so the tag can only ever understate how many builds are involved. Two of the 35 blame an Android or Google Play system update rather than the Xbox app itself.
The honest reading: the failure is concentrated on one build, it is not confined to it, and the reviews cannot tell you whether the cause shipped in the app, in Android, or on Microsoft's side.
The Detail Almost Nobody Reports
10 of the 367 mention their phone's time zone. That is a small number, 2.7% of the cluster, and we would normally leave it out. We are including it because of what those 10 say.
SOLUTION TO BROKEN APP - (UNABLE TO SIGN IN) 1) Turn off automatic time zones 2) set time zone is USA (skip if not an option on your device) 3) select your time zone using a city in the USA 4) Try and sign in again
Cant log into the app after years of no issues. Please fix! Turns out if you turn off automatic time and change the time to US (im in Canada) and select my time zone it for some reason makes it so the app brings up the browser so I can sign in.
App was good, now I have to change my phone's date and time to a different time zone. Being im in BC Can, I had to change it to LA, US in order to bypass the "login" screen.
Eight of the ten say changing the phone to a US time zone let them sign in. One says it worked and then stopped:
app signed me out a month or so ago and won't let me sign back in. looked online and there was a thread explaining to change the timezone and that it would work that way. I tried this, it worked briefly. but once I changed my timezone back to normal, I was signed out again. lame.
One says it did nothing:
App randomly stopped signing in. Clearing cache, resetting timezone, and reinstalling the app all did nothing.
A separate reviewer, writing from British Columbia, connects it to an Android time zone change rather than to the app. We are not endorsing that theory. We are reporting that eight people in this corpus say a time zone change was what got them back in, and that one of them says Microsoft support never acknowledged the issue at all.
What Did Not Work
89 of the 367 list the standard fixes they already tried. Clearing cache, clearing data, force stopping, uninstalling, reinstalling, restarting the phone, switching networks, trying a second device, trying the Xbox beta app.
after the last update it wont let me sign in. clearing the cache doesnt work, time settings dont work, uninstalling and reinstalling doesnt work. anyone have any other advice or something to try
Cannot sign in and have not been able to for months, deleted cache, reinstalled, still nothing. Apparently this is a known issue outside US.
46 reviewers say explicitly that other people have the same problem, pointing at Reddit threads, at the review list itself, or at social media. One update reads:
Update 09-Aug-2026: Latest Update did NOT fix log in issues. Thanks for not listening to the THOUSAND reviews and bug reports from your user base. Totally unacceptable from a software giant.
How to Try to Get Back In
Nothing below is an official fix, and we have no way to verify any of it. These are the steps this corpus reports, ordered from least to most disruptive.
Step 1: Check whether you are actually signed out
Open the app. If it shows "Sign in or sign up" plus "Set up a console", you are signed out, and that is the state 67 reviewers describe arriving in without touching anything. If the button responds and takes you to a Microsoft login page, you have a different problem than the one in this article.
Step 2: Run the standard fixes once, not five times
Clear the app's cache and data, force stop it, restart the phone, reinstall. 89 reviewers report doing exactly this with no result, so do it once to rule it out and then stop. Repeating it is the single most common wasted effort in this corpus.
Step 3: Try the time zone change
Turn off automatic date and time on your phone, set the time zone manually to a US city in your own time zone if one exists, and try signing in again. Eight of the ten reviewers who tried this say it worked. One says it worked only while the setting stayed changed. Set it back afterwards and expect to be signed out again if the reports are right.
Step 4: Sign in somewhere else first
Several reviewers report that the Microsoft account itself is fine, because the same credentials work on the console, on a PC and on the web. If you can sign in on account.microsoft.com in your phone's browser, the account is not the problem and you can stop testing passwords.
Step 5: Report it with your build number
The review list is currently the loudest signal Microsoft has. If you file a report, include the app version from Google Play, your phone model, your country, and whether the time zone change did anything. Those four facts are what is missing from most of the 367 reviews we read.
Not Only in English
We swept 29 country and language buckets on Google Play and collected 13,282 unique reviews. The English buckets confirmed a rule we keep re-testing: all 600 reviews returned for the UK were already in the US set, so a language bucket, not a country, is what makes a review new.
The 25 non-English buckets returned 12,682 reviews we had not seen, 2,405 of them substantial negatives. 409 of those use a sign-in word in their own language. We did not classify all 409. We read the 71 posted since 15 June and they describe the same button.

Germandie Handy App spinnt bei mir nur noch rum. sie lässt sich nicht mehr öffnen oder ich kann mich nicht mehr anmelden. Somit habe ich probleme mich auf der PS bei Minecraft anzumelden.
The Turkish reviewer describes the button greying out and coming back with no screen in between, on a child's Samsung, after an update dated 17 August. The Portuguese reviewer describes the same button in the same order: dark green, then light green, then nothing. Neither could have read the other.
Two Claims We Are Not Making
That Microsoft broke this in a specific release. 125 of the 367 were on 2607.1.1 and 58 were on the build before it. Reviews cannot tell you where a bug was introduced, only where people were standing when they hit it.
That the time zone change is the fix. Ten people mentioned it. Eight say it helped. That is a pattern worth trying, not a diagnosis, and one reviewer in this same corpus says resetting the time zone did nothing at all.
What This Does Not Show
Negative reviews are self-selected. Of the 4,000 reviews we pulled, 1,963 were 4 or 5 stars. The 34.5% figure is a share of complaints, not a share of users. The app's lifetime average is still 4.54.
We cannot verify a single outcome. We cannot confirm that any reviewer was signed out, that any button was dead, or that any time zone change did what they say it did.
This is Android only. The iOS listing holds 4.68 stars from 1,741,611 ratings on the same version number, and this article says nothing about how the app behaves there.
The window ends on 13 September 2026. September is 13 days, not a month, and its 26.1% is built on 69 substantial negatives.
