Subway App Gift Card Not Working: 140 Reviews (2026)
The Subway app will not apply a gift card unless the balance covers the whole order, so the last few dollars stay stuck. We read 2,029 substantial negative Google Play reviews: 140 are about gift cards, 20 name an amount, and two 2026 updates made it worse on dates the reviews can pin down.
If you have a Subway gift card with eight dollars left on it and a sandwich that costs eleven, the app will not let you use the card. Not for part of the order. Not with a credit card covering the rest. It will simply refuse the gift card and ask you to pay the whole total another way, and the eight dollars stays where it is.
App never allows you to use your credit card with the remainder of the gift card. Example: if u have $5 left on card, but your sandwich cost $9, it will NOT allow u to use the gift card because you don't have enough balance.
BEWARE!!! If you add your subway gift card to the app, you will never be able to use it all unless you get lucky and have a total for exact amount. I have had $1.76 on my card for 3 years.
That is not a bug report. It is the app working the way reviewers say it has worked for years, and it is the single most repeated money complaint in Subway's Google Play reviews. On top of it, two separate 2026 updates made the situation worse in ways the reviews let us date precisely.
We read the 4,050 newest Google Play reviews of the Subway app from the United States store, dated 21 March 2026 to 3 September 2026, a 166 day window. Of those, 3,635 are one to three stars, and 2,029 are substantial, meaning at least 120 characters of actual text. 149 of those 2,029 mention a gift card. We read all 149 by hand, set aside 9 that turned out to be about something else, and were left with 140 verified complaints, 6.9% of the substantial negative set. 110 of the 140 are one star, or 78.6%.
On Google Play the app holds 4.11 stars from 515,627 ratings, with 86,340 of those at one star and more than 10 million installs. The current build is 102.0.0, released 1 September 2026. The app carries no ads and declares no in-app purchases, which matters here: everything below is about money that already belongs to the customer. The iOS listing holds 4.81 from 1,205,600 ratings, which is the usual store gap and not evidence that the payment screen behaves differently.
What The 140 Reviews Actually Say
The claims overlap. A single review often makes two of them, so these numbers deliberately do not add up to 140.
| Claim | Reviews | Share of the 140 |
|---|---|---|
| The balance is below the order total, so the card cannot be applied at all | 48 | 34.3% |
| The gift card is not offered as a payment method, or the balance is missing from the app | 43 | 30.7% |
| Balances cannot be combined, transferred between cards, or topped up | 35 | 25.0% |
| Locked out of the app entirely with the balance still inside | 5 | 3.6% |
| Subway removed the balance | 2 | 1.4% |
| Explicitly says this used to work | 33 | 23.6% |
Two of these are ordinary product limits that a company is allowed to have. Two of them are things that reviewers say stopped working in 2026, and those we can date.
The Structural One: The App Will Not Split A Payment
This is the complaint that never goes away. The rule reviewers describe is simple and absolute. If the gift card balance does not cover the entire order, the app will not apply the gift card for the part it can cover.
garbage app. fix the payment method page. it won't let me use a gift card because it's not enough to cover the order. well, I want to use the gift card and put the remaining balance on credit, but it won't let me do that. very frustrating!
Still wont let me use split mayment methods. that means when i have $7 left on my gift card trying to buy a $10 sandwitch, it wont let me.pay the $3 extra. I have to either trash the $7 on the card and pay it all with a credit card, or "reload" my gift card which takes a seriously long time.
Very poor app design for easy payments. I added a gift card to the app then it won't let me use it for payment because it wouldn't cover the full amount.
One review captures the part that makes people angriest, which is that the app clearly knows the balance and even warns you that a second payment method will be needed, and then refuses to accept one.
this app knows about my gift card, knows the balance of it, tells me if theres a balance left over ill have to use an additional payment method, but then when I try to use it, it tells me I dont have enough balance on the gift card pick a different payment method and you cant select two payment methods.
We checked whether this is a regression by sorting the complaint against the app version each reviewer was running. It is not. Across nineteen builds spanning six months, the share of substantial negative reviews making this specific claim moves between roughly 1% and 10% with no direction to it: 3.4% on 30.20.2 in March, 4.0% on 101.2.0 in May, 4.8% on 101.5.0 in June, 3.8% on 101.7.0 in August. By calendar month it is 4.8% in March, 3.6% in April, 2.1% in May, 5.4% in June, 4.0% in July, 2.8% in August.
Flat is the finding. A bug produces a step. This produces a line. Reviewers are describing a design decision, not a defect, and the reviewer who has carried $1.76 on a card for three years is describing the same decision as the reviewer who wrote about it last month.
The Money: 20 Reviewers Name A Figure
Most of the 140 do not say how much is stranded. Twenty of them do. Read in order, the amounts are $0.17, $1, $1.75, $1.76, about $2 on each of two cards, $3, $5, $7, $8, over $20, $25, $30, about $40, $50, $50, over $50, over $60, $100, $160 and $200.
Those twenty figures add up to roughly $817, with a median of $22.50. That number is exactly what it looks like: the total named by twenty people in one review sample. It is a floor for those twenty accounts and nothing more. It is not an estimate of anything company wide, and any number that claimed to be would be invented.
thanks for making me buy 5$ reload just so I could use the gift card instead of an easy multi-pay function like other food apps now i got a card worth 0.17$ so thanks for stealing that from me
They have intentionally removed the "transfer balance" option, and made it so you can pay across multiple gift cards. The website is also conveniently never available for me to do this. I suppose the idea is to make my $5 remaining balance near unusable.
The shape that repeats is not the size. It is that the stranded amount is always the tail end of a card someone else bought as a present, which is the part of a gift card that a splittable checkout would clear in one order.
App is ok but, it needs a way to combine gift cards. I have 2 gift cards both spent down to $2ish, but I can't use that little bit on the card because the app wants you to pay the whole bill on q payment method.
The First Dated Regression: Early May 2026, The Gift Card Option Disappeared
In the first week of May 2026, Subway shipped a rebuilt app. The version numbers jump from the 30.21.x series to 101.1.x, and the first reviews running 101.1.7 appear on 7 May 2026.
On that build, reviewers stop describing a card they cannot fully spend and start describing a card that is not there at all.
| App version | First review seen | Substantial negatives | Gift card complaints | Share |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 30.20.2 | 21 Mar 2026 | 59 | 2 | 3.4% |
| 30.21.0 | 25 Mar 2026 | 153 | 11 | 7.2% |
| 30.21.1 | 10 Apr 2026 | 313 | 17 | 5.4% |
| 101.1.7 | 7 May 2026 | 59 | 16 | 27.1% |
| 101.1.10 | 11 May 2026 | 70 | 10 | 14.3% |
| 101.2.0 | 15 May 2026 | 124 | 5 | 4.0% |
| 101.2.1 | 21 May 2026 | 104 | 2 | 1.9% |
On 101.1.7 more than a quarter of every substantial negative review mentions a gift card problem, against a baseline of three to seven percent on the builds before it. The reviews from that week describe the same thing in the same words.
Ever since this latest update the gift card feature was removed. I specifically bought gift cards to use on it but can't use them. the website keeps saying access denied.
Accepted the new update and now all of my gift cards are gone and not accessible. I dont have the physical cards as they were added to my account. This is unacceptable.
the new app doesn't support the $200 in gift cards I have in it. they're just gone. only way to use them is the website which is broken.
This update seems to have removed the option to use gift cards as a payment method. I had over $20 balance before update. what the heck! I saw there was an update, so I updated. I wish I hadn't.
One reviewer had it in writing from Subway, which is the closest thing in this set to a company acknowledgement:
Just updated the app and my gift card I have been reloading money to use as a scan payment is gone. Just got an email from Subway. Gift card payments through the app won't be available until next week. Why push out an update that is not fully functional?
Two weeks later a reviewer describes the other half of the problem, which is that the balance did not necessarily come back when the feature did.
Update: The app has been updated to allow gift cards again, but my balance is gone. So this app stole over $50 in gift cards from me. Good work guys.
The LATEST update to this app deleted the ability to pay with gift cards...which effectively stole about $40 I had loaded into the app from a card from a friend.
By 101.2.1, in late May, the share is back down to 1.9%. The acute outage lasted roughly two weeks.
The Second Dated Regression: June 2026, Transfer And Combine Went Away
The workaround people had been using for the split payment problem was to consolidate. If you have $1.75 on one card and $25 on another, you move the small balance onto the big one and the stranded money stops being stranded. Reviewers say that option existed, and that an update took it out.
The complaint has a clean window. It is close to absent on every build before 101.4.3, and it is completely absent on every build after 101.5.1.
| App version | First review seen | Substantial negatives | Transfer or combine complaints | Share |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 101.3.0 | 28 May 2026 | 105 | 2 | 1.9% |
| 101.3.1 | 4 Jun 2026 | 94 | 2 | 2.1% |
| 101.4.3 | 11 Jun 2026 | 101 | 7 | 6.9% |
| 101.4.4 | 19 Jun 2026 | 43 | 2 | 4.7% |
| 101.5.0 | 26 Jun 2026 | 58 | 6 | 10.3% |
| 101.5.1 | 2 Jul 2026 | 55 | 4 | 7.3% |
| 101.6.0 | 10 Jul 2026 | 28 | 0 | 0% |
| 101.6.1 | 17 Jul 2026 | 42 | 0 | 0% |
| 101.7.0 | 24 Jul 2026 | 104 | 0 | 0% |
| 101.8.0 | 7 Aug 2026 | 76 | 0 | 0% |
The reviewers in that window are specific about what changed, and several of them had been using the feature long enough to describe it accurately.
The app works fine, but the latest update eliminated the ability to transfer gift card balances. That's a really disrespectful way to treat your customers.
The old app worked great, now the update app will not combine gift cards if you have $1.75 from a gift card want to combine it with a $25 gift card will not work. In the old app you could do it. But with the new updated app you can't do it.
BEWARE!!! They are deliberately ripping off customers! Previous versions allowed users to roll up trailing gift card balances into one usable card. They removed that feature so that we are FORCED to leave money hanging on each card that can not be accessed.
There used to be an option to transfer funds between gift cards. Now it doesn't exist.
One reviewer reports the most Kafkaesque version, where the support bot still describes a feature the app no longer has:
7/26 --- DESERVES ZERO STARS!!! Can no longer transfer gift card balance to another registered gift card on my account. AND "Sammy" (the online helper) says you can do this action ... which is weird because there is no transfer option showing onscreen.
We are not claiming the feature was removed. We are reporting that a specific complaint went from near zero to ten percent of all substantial negative reviews across four consecutive builds in June and July and then stopped, and that thirty three reviewers across the whole set say plainly that something they used to do no longer works. The complaints stopping is not proof it was restored. It is equally consistent with the people who cared having already left.
What Happened Next, And Why We Are Not Calling It Fixed
By August the gift card complaint has faded. On 101.8.0 it is 2.6% of substantial negatives, on 101.9.1 it is 2.9%, and on 101.9.2, the most recent build in our window, it is zero out of 28.
There is one review in the newer builds that reads like a partial fix, and it is worth quoting in full because it is the only one of its kind in the set. On 16 August 2026, running 101.8.0:
Glad you finally added the option of using two payment methods in order to use up a small gift card. Sadly, it doesn't work! Every time the payment fails and I'm required to make a payment in full using my credit card instead!
That is a single review. It is not a pattern and we are not presenting it as one. But it is the only evidence in 2,029 substantial negative reviews about what happened to split payments after June, and it says the option appeared and did not work.
The Ways Out That Reviewers Actually Found
None of these came from Subway. They came from people in the reviews describing what they ended up doing, and each of them costs the customer something.
Reload the card past the order total. Several reviewers describe buying more value to unlock the value they already had. One is blunt about the arithmetic:
You cannot combine gift card balances using the Subway app so they force you to go to the desktop website to do so. This is probably purposely done so that people leave gift cards with low dollar amounts unused or are compelled to reload the card balance to an amount above the price of purchase.
Spend it in a physical store instead of the app. This is the most commonly reported answer, and it works, but it removes the reason people loaded the card into the app.
the app will not let you pay with a gift card unless it's in full. if you have a partial gift card left and you want to use it up and then pay the rest with a different payment method, it won't allow that.
2 glitches 1. If you save a Subway gift card as a method of pmt, you cannot use it in the app. You have to go to the store and show it, completely defeating the purpose of ordering online and having it delivered or picked up.
Enter the card number and PIN manually rather than using the saved card. One reviewer found this on Reddit, not from support.
Being generous here. App always seems to glitch or freeze, my order disappears, etc. Now, it's been giving me a "invalid card number/pin" for TWO DAYS! Thanks to a Redditor, I discovered I could buy a Subway e-gift card and manually enter the number and pin to get it to work.
Use the website. This is the least reliable of the four. Several reviewers say the site worked when the app did not, and several say the opposite in the same weeks.
Two Ways To Lose The Balance Completely
Five reviewers describe being locked out of the app with the balance inside it. Two mechanisms show up. One is device compatibility, where an app update refuses to install and the old build refuses to open.
The currently installed app on phone requires an update to open now but when I attempt to update it I find out that my device is no longer compatible with the new version and now I can not use it at all. I have e-gift cards in my app wallet worth over $60 that I can not use anymore. Just lost all of my money.
I can't update the app. It says my device is no longer compatible and to contact the developer. I had a $50 digital gift card that I got for my birthday saved on the app that I will no longer be able to use
The other is a country lock, which mostly affects Canadian users whose account thinks they are somewhere else.
I have a $100 gift card on my account that is unusable because it says I'm in the US and can't change it to Canada, so I can't spend it. Basically scammed me out of $100.
I'm a Canadian user. Haven't gone to subway for awhile, went to go tonight, had to login. no biggie, it's been awhile. I finally get logged in and try to order, but get told I'm in a different country. I try to change my country and am unable to. I was able to order as a guest, but I had a gift card on my app I wanted to use.
Separately, two reviewers say Subway removed their balance outright. This is a small number and we are flagging it as such, but the mechanism is worth recording, and so is the ending: this reviewer eventually got the money back, after several emails, having never been told it was gone.
Be careful, subway may take your gift cards(all of them) and you would never know! I added couple subway gift cards and after 1 week they dissappear. Contacted customer support. They remove it because they thought it's fraud, but they NEVER informed me about it! And just took my $160 worth of gift cards! It took me several emails to restore it.
Support
Twelve of the 140 mention customer service, a chatbot, or having no way to reach a person. That is a smaller number than the tone of the reviews suggests, and it is worth saying why we are reporting twelve rather than a bigger figure. Our first pass counted 51, because the pattern we searched for included the letters "AI" and matched ordinary words like "said" and "again". Recounting against a stricter pattern gives twelve. The reviews that do mention support agree on what happens.
Ordering works okay, but I can't merge gift cards. The chat bot tells me to go to payment methods and transfer funds there, but there is no option to do that.
app directs you to the website to reload gift card. website now says you need to do it on the gift card and has no option to reload. AI chatbot option is awful. The app might look pretty but it is not functional.
Outside The United States The Corpus Is Thin, And That Is Itself A Finding
We ran the same search across 45 Google Play storefronts. After removing the reviews the United Kingdom store returns that are byte for byte the same records as the American ones, 122 substantial negative reviews remain, and 74 of them are French. Subway is a North American product on Google Play in a way that most brands we study are not, so there is no large foreign language layer here to compare against.
The French reviews are worth reading anyway, because they reproduce the American complaints without having read them. The split payment refusal appears in French, in a review from April:
FrenchApplication très lente, qui bogue souvent et qui ne permet pas de payer une partie de la commande par carte cadeau et une partie par visa. Multiples erreurs dans la même commande, 2 sub identiques et ils arrivent quand même à faire des erreurs.
So does the payment method that gets rejected after the app itself asks you to change it:
FrenchC'est bien plaisant les rabais qu'offre l'application mais pour celà faut être capable de commander ce que je n'arrive jamais à faire! ça me dit de changer de mode de paiment et quand je change de carte ça me dit que j'ai essayé trop de fois de changer de carte et que mon compte est bloqué!
And so does the checkout error that stops the order before payment starts:
FrenchAppli qui bogue constamment. Dès que j'arrive pour payer, ça me dit toujours "erreur du panier". Incapable de sélectionner les coupons, ça me dit que j'ai pas les bons articles (même si je les ai).
Most of the French reviewers are writing from Quebec, which also explains the country lock complaints in the American corpus: a Canadian account and an American storefront are two different things, and the app treats the mismatch as a reason to refuse a card rather than a reason to switch regions.
What We Could Not Confirm
We did not test any of this ourselves and we are not going to pretend we did. Everything above is what people wrote in public reviews, counted and dated.
We cannot confirm that a transfer feature ever existed, only that thirty three reviewers say something they used to do stopped working and that the complaint has a clean start and end date. We cannot confirm the current state of split payments, because our newest build has 28 substantial negative reviews and none of them mentions a gift card, which is too small a sample to call anything. We cannot say how much money is stranded in total, and the $817 figure covers twenty people. And the 140 is a floor, not a ceiling: a reviewer who writes "the payment screen is broken" without using the words "gift card" is not counted, and there are hundreds of those.
The one thing the reviews do settle is the direction of the mistake. Every failure mode in this set costs the customer the money and costs Subway nothing until the customer stops coming back, and 23.6% of them say they used to be able to do the thing they can no longer do.
Where To See The Reviews
You can read the current negative reviews yourself. We keep a running breakdown of the Subway Android app and the iOS listing, plus the trust check on whether the Subway app is legit and a list of alternatives to the Subway app built from the same review data.
If you are holding a balance you cannot spend, the two things reviewers in this set most often wish they had done sooner are taking the physical card into a store while the balance is still on it, and screenshotting the balance inside the app before accepting an update.
